Why do people who don't like Xu Kai past dramas always start out by telling us that they love Xu Kai?

I don't understand why people want perfect endings where everyone can live happily ever after. After you watch the drama, you forget. The less perfect endings are more interesting and memorable like in this drama, someone died that I did not expect and because it was one of my favorite characters in the drama, I will always remember that person in this drama because the death seemed so unfair.

Why do people think they know better than Xu Kai what roles he should or should not take on? Xu Kai only turned 29 and still has a lot of years to make more dramas. Chinese people tend to look at least 5 yrs. younger than their real age, and then you add the makeup, they can have long careers.

Ratings are subjective. There are no criteria. You can rate a drama down for any reason you feel like it. Some dramas instantly draw you in but then after a while you lose interest because it's the same old thing throughout (40 episodes!), and some dramas are hard to tell by just watching a trailer or a few episodes because the story may be complicated and doesn't' come together until you watched the whole thing, and then you may need to rewatch some of it, if you're still interested in the plot, esp. when censorship causes editing mishaps. MDL tends to have a lot of Xu Kai haters. I'm not sure if they all flock to Viki too, but the ratings tend to be higher on Viki, it's 9.1 on Viki. For MDL, comparatively speaking, I feel this drama deserves 8.0 to 8.2. The flawed characters are interesting, and one can learn a lot of life lessons from them. I especially remember how the ml was trying to decide if he should go down that path knowing it would lead to nothing, and the response from his Master was interesting. There are lot of profound things said that I want to quote from this drama. I enjoy the fighting scenes which feels realistic (more fun to watch than bad CGI that most dramas put out). I know how hard Xu Kai worked on his spear techniques so I wanted to see him perform it, even though he feels he should have done better, of course being biased, I thought he was great. These actors are not professional and only train on the job for couple of months, then they don't pick it up again. Xu Kai said the director told him, other actors can use special effects except him, he has to do it all himself and only if the move require a professional then they have someone else do it, but then in the end, all his efforts, the postproduction sure edited out so much that some fans don't recognize that it's him doing it.
I feel there is pretty good chemistry overall among the cast, but the finest chemistry and most interesting relationship was between the ml and his Master.

the father seems like a really nice guy. He lets his wife have her way. The mother doesn't have the same last name. I know they are speaking Mandarin but the way the parents speak just seems so Cantonese-like, esp. the mother, or maybe I'm getting mixed up with Taiwanese. I haven't watched any modern Chinese family dramas like this, so this will be interesting for me.

Every drama has viewers hating on a character. I wonder if it will be the mother in this drama.

BTW, in my opinion, XK is not a "traffic actor", just an actor. He doesn't do regular variety shows, not a singer, dancer, rapper, etc. or any other "traffic" activities. His fans know him from his acting roles only. Relatively speaking, he's not even popular in China. His fan base is more international.

She is someone who could be a hit in an American movie because when I watch her modern dramas, I don't think of her as a Chinese girl, like I would when watching other Chinese dramas. She just comes across like any other girl. For me, she stands out from her peers, and she's only 25. She has a really bright career ahead. She really carries this entire drama by herself at such a young age against a man who is 18 yrs older than her and been acting long time.

This drama has a good director. Dylan Wang age, height, figure, personality, looks, demeanor would make a good fit for this kind of role. AvenueX only thinks in terms of technical competence but sometimes, an actor gets a role that just fits them naturally and it can work. Of course, the actor still has to have the brilliance of interpreting the role and creating the character that has chemistry with the cast and connects with the audience, but sometimes when it works, it just works and no one knows until it happens. That's why casting is so important.
