I think her relationship with them is great! I mean that scene in episode 18.. and when Haixia is almost going to do something unacceptable because of the medicine her voice is what stops him. She's the anchor of their entire lives. Despite everything, the world could burn down and they would feel stable if they have their shifu beside them. But I agree that maybe she could be fleshed out more, though I don't see her being strong as flaw, honestly. It's more like, she is how someone from the Zhang family should be. She cares - a lot - it's just that she's also rational, focused, and operating on the Zhang family logic. She has been alive for so long and has seen a lot. So it's only natural that she's more on the withdrawn side but her strength is kind of, less "see how strong she is!" and more "the narrative does not allow her the grace of sadness. she is strong because she must keep pushing forward; there is no other way to survive this." I feel like it also is parallel to the main series in some way; Wu Xie, around Tibetan Sea Flower and Sha Hai, doesn't get to pause or process. The strength is just the fact that those people must continue on, because life and the person they are demands it. This is especially true for a Zhang family member. The timelines are very different! As you noted, this one takes place in the Republican Era while the main series is around 2000s (the start of it). This more or less has nothing central regarding the main trio because Wu Xie and Fatty are not even born yet lmao 😭 I was surprised to see Xiaoge appear honestly. But generally speaking, I'd recommend you enjoy Haixia, Hailou and Haiqi more rather than pinning your hopes on the main series connection. Especially considering Southern Archives is a side story.

I loved the first few episodes 😭 they're so funny like YES a chicken attacks a car, a guy thinks he'll be a live sacrifice for a ritual, and a fan assuredly tells his idol that "ghosts can't be real because this is a lawful society!!" law will exorcise ur ghosts. and a celebrity gets arrested accused of stealing TEA LEAVES. the ending is just fine though.

You can watch it on YouTube! Just make sure you search "i want to go to your year 2026" instead of game for peace. It's like when Fangs of Fortune gets translated into "the story of mystics". The subbing sometimes misses some stuff but overall it's pretty good.

Nah. Please don't compare Bai Youning to Mu Qing. Bai Youning at the very least had a consistent character, motives and solid identity. Mu Qing is just a prop with extra steps.
