As far as I know, you can sort dramas by rating on douban, but I don't think sorting by popularity is available. Also, they don't offer API anymore, so data scraping is extremely hard to do automatically. I manually did it at the end, which took me a significantly long time and I'm pretty confident this is the most accurate one I can get. As for the bell curve, I didn't have a graphic to back it up, but I think it makes sense.

The qualification criteria are somewhat strict because too many dramas would make it to this list if I lower the requirements. For now, I'll probably stick to the current criteria. hope you understand it :)

I'm glad you like this list! I'll update it regularly as long as I have time. I'm still trying to make the rankings more accurate and figure out how to handle the seasonal dramas, though. Seasonal C-dramas can be hella confusing sometimes :) Regarding the subtitles, that is indeed unfortunate. I guess unless some passionate individuals with fluent English and Chinese volunteer to translate those older dramas, you'll have to wait for streaming platforms like Netflix to buy the rights someday.
