The novel had a happy ending, they got married But there's an epilogue with sad ending... They had two children (daughter and son) but because he suffered from PTSD, he died after 10 years of their marriage and Ran Ran died while saving a child from a bullet (5 years after his death) Actually the ending is both sad (as they both died) and happy (they got married and also had children), but it's realistic cause his PTSD was really severe and can't be cured, he was able to live for these 10 years because of Ran Ran, the pain and the sufferings, he endured it all just because his Ran Ran... So it depends on u, if u think it's happy it's happy and if u think it's sad it's sad....
