In the original drama, there is not a happy ending, but the production team did make an edit for an alternate ending, the scriptwriter provided another alternate ending script and there's an audio verison of yet another alternate ending (in total, 3 alternate endings with happy ends for the show specifically; the audio drama and the novels also have happy endings) but specifically what is filmed does not have a happy ending.

Personally, I felt like episode 5, 6 and 7 had a lot of really good set up for the overarching plot and had a lot more interesting content than the first four - I felt like the plot ramp up is kinda subtle since they put down so many plot threads at the beginning (and everything gets addressed!). By episode 6, you'll have most of the main cast introduced, as well. The plot overall should pick up a lot more before or by episode 8 or so!

Hello! It also took me like 4~5 episodes to really get into the show. I think, at first, the plot feels really simplistic, but the overall plot is actually quite intricate, and watching the characters grow and change along the way is absolutely fantastic.
If you're enjoying the setting, I think it's worth it to stick to watching it for a little longer, since I truly feel that story is quite good. After around 6ish episodes, I got pretty attached, and my enjoyment of the show has only continued since then! I haven't actually finished yet but I'm really enjoying it so far!! ^^
