Title Lady Daddy
It's honestly very progressive for a Korean film made in 2009(!). It's definitely dated but in some ways, it's more thoughtfully rendered than some depictions of trans women in Western media from recent years. Overall, a sweet and heartwarming, if somewhat silly film. Also increased my attraction to Kim Ji Suk by 20%.

The plot description is pretty misleading. As far as I know, their characters are friends who support each other,…
lol, there's no mention of romance in the original article, i think the mdl writer misunderstood. though i suppose it does deal with romance, just not between the two main characters. and it is very much a queer novel... the character's sexual orientation is very central to the story so there's no way that they could just make it straight lol.

As a side note, I am appalled at how celebrities who are addicts get fired and have their faces removed from any…
Oh my god, save me from self-righteous Americans... Like, as if America is a utopia of tolerance for addicts... As someone that works with patients that are being treated for addication/substance use disorder, I can tell you that even in America, patients face stigma in all corners of life. There are plenty of Americans (including some goddamn health professionals tbh) that still treat addiction like it is a moral failure. As an aside, the U.S. has been slower than much of the Western world in adopting many proven life-saving harm-reduction measures and continues to see a staggering number of people every year dying due to overdose.

Anyway, here's a little history for you, babe: modern Korean drug policy was modelled after American laws following pressure from U.S. forces occupying Korea to enact a stricter policy in the 70s. So you can blame Nixon and U.S. neo-colonialism, for how unforgiving "the Asians" are.

Like obviously, Korea has its problems, but it's incredibly annoying to see outsiders complaining about it when their lives will never be affected. Save the sanctimonious lecture, and just stop at conveying your sympathy and sadness.

Yoona and Junho are beautiful and charming despite the little they're given to work with. I can imagine a bunch of executives going, 'Hey, if we cast Im Yoona and Lee Junho in a romcom right now, people will watch the hell out of that!' and then rustled up a script that does the bare minimum and decided that was all they needed. And honestly, it's frustrating because they're right, people probably would watch Im Yoona and Lee Junho sitting together and staring at the wall in dead silence! But they could have made something really magical if they put in a little more creativity.

Man, what is the point of making speculations like this? It just comes off as ugly and backwards. They're both adults in their 30s and are more than capable of making decisions for themselves. And what does her being older than him have to do with anything? 4 years isn't even a big age gap. My mom is 5 years older than my dad and they've been happily married for over 25 years. Instead of wasting your time like this, maybe you should try staying quiet if you have nothing nice to say.

started this just to kill time but it's turned out to be quite fun. i like the breezy vibes and the whole enemies to friends to lovers thing feels very natural and easy here. yoo inna is lovely as she always is, but yoon hyun min is also better suited to romcoms that i originally expected? they're both charming, i guesss, is my point. i highly recommend it if you want something pleasant to watch casually :)

Is NIW a bad actor or did he just have bad luck? I mean, just because his previous dramas flopped (did they?)…
It's really just certain people making those kinds of criticisms, I hope you don't take them to heart too much, I'm sure PMY doesn't care. Some people will just say ageist and sexist things (and not just knetizens btw, I've seen it everywhere). And anyway, why should she turn down a project that she wants to do because of dumb opinions like that? People said so many horrible things about Jeon Do Yeon when she was cast in Crash Course in Romance... about how she was too old to be in romcoms, her wrinkles, etc... and it ended up one of the most successful cable dramas ever, so!

And for the record, I thought PMY & Song Kang had great chemistry in FL&W, like the show had its issues but it wasn't about that. Besides, PMY acts with a lot of younger actors... NIW, SK, and SKJ are all around the same age, I guess KKP too. I mean I also think SK has a younger image in general (he's played a lot of student type characters) but that was part of their dynamic in FL&W. Whether NIW was miscast or not, it's hard to say, I'm not sure how faithful the adaptation will be. But he's a capable actor and PMY brings out the best in her costars imo. So I don't feel particularly worried yet. I hope you're not too stressed about it, trust PMY! :)

This kind of article should be stopped, why highlighting age is an important thing to reason the drama success?…
FYI It's a translated article (see source hyperlinked at the bottom of the article), and from a quick perusal, it seems fairly faithfully translated.

Anyway, I don't think the thrust of the article is that the drama is only successful because of Uhm Jung Hwa's age, and I don't think it's belittling her talent.

The reality is that older female actors see their opportunities shrink precipitously as they get older, particularly in film. I think an article highlighting the fact that older female actors still have a lot of star power is a good thing. In fact, I think studio execs should take note. Post SKY Castle and World of the Married, I feel like I've seen more dramas with older women as the main characters, but even like five years ago, it was hard to see. And it's a shame, because there is so much talent out there.

Somewhat relatedly, I recently saw an interview with Jeon Do Yeon. She talked about how when she was cast in Crash Course in Romance, people said she was too old to be the female lead in a romcom. Well, she proved them all dead wrong. The numbers speak for themselves.

I'm curious as to why they're using the title of a famous Chinese movie that is an entirely different story 🤔
i suppose the movie's more famous now but the english title is a literal translation of a four-character idiom (chengyu/sajaseong-eo) basically meaning don't underestimate people.
