I personally didn't find Ae-sun to be insufferable and, honestly, I found her to be realistic for someone her…
think her attitude towards gawngsik at the beginning was my main issue and made me ponder on the pattern i have been noticing.

While those two other leads were not loud or disrespectful in the same way i still think they’re very much indicative of the larger issue at hand. i found them to be quite rude or were also mean to the male leads or others in general, again something i notice quite frequently as an expression of a ‘strong female lead’ in kdramas. i see it often in Shin Hye-sun characters for example. can be seen in hotel de luna, lovely runner, samdal ri to name a few.

The idea that a strong female lead needs to be cold, rude or other similar aforementioned personality traits feels slightly misogynistic and gives the idea to the viewer that possessing a strong will and attitude is also negative.

A woman can be strong willed, determined and loud in a way that isn’t negative or rude or perceived so by others. thats my issue

it definitely reads as rooted in misogyny derived from koreas conservatism

respectfully, who cares about that when you’ve accused me of saying i want women to be subservient when i’m quite literally critiquing koreas problematic portrayal of strong independent female leads.

if you can’t intelligently explain or discuss things, better to not throw around wild accusations like that.

I’m going to have to assume you haven’t read any of my other comments because to come to this conclusion, you have to be insanely dense when all ive done is speak out against koreas irritating portrayal of strong women.

Go back and read my other discussion points, dummy.

of course its not the case for every drama but in most dramas with a strong, independent female lead, they’re often displayed as loud and disrespectful in some capacity, that is something worth discussing.

I was in now way saying if a woman is loud, she’s disrespectful. i’m campaigning for the exact opposite to be portrayed in korea media. Au-sun was disrespectful in telling Gwang-sik, whom was giving her fish and stayed by her side through her mothers death and step families abuse, that she would never marry him and he was stupid for not knowing what nostalgia meant.

that was my issue, which again, plays into my point that often in k media a woman is written to be disrespectful and mean if she is independent.

It would be nice to see that trope leave shows ya know !

edit: woman can be loud, boisterous and headstrong without having to be rude and shouty ! i think thats important to show younger female watchers and the world alike !

Defending her husband who was mistreated by his boss and fighting back clearly shows how aesun respects and loves…
sure, they're absolutely different characters but that doesn’t have anything to do with the wider point i’m making.

Its so common in korean media that when a female lead is written to be independent and strong, that often manifests at some point in the story with her mistreating the lead, especially if he’s quieter.

A young woman can be strong, brash and independent without being rude and shouty.

Respectfully, i think you’re giving the show far too much credit and inferring a lot based on not a lot.

Au-sun is not a good written character thus far. Her character can still be headstrong and determined without being written to be distastefully loud and rude to her love interest. Again, i find thats a common trope within south korean dramas that headstrong and determined needs to be displayed with loud and rude tendencies.

Her motivations and desires are already justified and portrayed beautifully. if she was written better she wouldn’t have to be loud and rude to Gwang-sik (like she very much is, theres no way to justify that). she doesn’t have to be ‘restrained’ and ‘obedient’ to not be the opposite.

Regardless of how you view her character, i do still believe its an interesting observation of how south korea likes to write wilful, strong women.

Truly hoping Ae-Sun goes through some serious character development. Ive noted a lot of south korean dramas think a ‘strong female lead’ has to be loud, insufferable and disrespectful. Its beginning to get quite frustrating to watch how Ae-sun treats Gwang-sik.

But i get that she’s young now, so i’m willing to put up with her character in hopes she gets better lmao.

Does Sam-Dal get better and more likeable?? i’m on episode 3 and struggling bc Sam-dal is just so damn unlikable…
her monologue yelling at her friends talking about ‘if you were my real friends’ all the while she cut them all off when they went back to jeju, didn’t even meet her so called friends children…such a selfish character!

I truly, absolutely, wholeheartedly hate soo-hyuns so called friend/secretary like actively going behind her friends back to stop the one thing that makes her happy and being a classist b*tch in the process….i hate her so bad

i’m on episode 9 and its getting harder and harder to watch purely because of the female lead is ABSOLUTELY INSUFFERABLE sometimes like i really enjoy the moments where the shows not centred on her and jun, watching jun and soo-hyun is the only thing pushing me through

Not to be a naysayer because i loved this drama but i can't be the only one who, by second half of the drama hated ho rang and began to dislike ji ho.
They're weird victim mentality, woe is me dialogue and actions and constant pussy footing around their issues instead of adressing them grated on me so much, i longed for mr ma and soo ji bc they're so fun and interesting to watch.
Also, hate me all you want but jung so min is such a boring actress, she's pretty good but so wooden and i felt myself drifting off when she was on screen alot.
On Hello, My Twenties! Season 2 Oct 17, 2017
As always this drama really outdoes itself, it's amazing.

That being said,

I really honestly wish Hye Soo was available for filming as there's just something about the way Ji Woo portrays Eun Jae that makes her completely unlikeable to the point where her focus scenes made me genuinely angry, especially at her characters attitude towards gay people.

i dunno, i'm irked tho, kill bill sirens all around.
