How about a JDorama? My Girl (2009). Falls under several categories--Single Dad, Do I Have a Kid?, Caring Fathers.

Loved this one. Was distressed a bit during the first two eps but I was enthralled as the father came to understand what it meant to be a dad.

there's no plot summary? 😭😭
Based on a true love story shared on an online bulletin board, Fukuda Yu is a young man who fell in love with a girl that gave him half of her eraser in the second year of junior high school. The unrequited love continued for the next 13 years which was filled with laughter and tears.

I felt worried for what happened to Mitsuru at the end of this movie. After he stood on the edge of the school roof, he was seen dancing Kagura without a mask and he was alone. I don't know much about Kagura but I thought that it was always masked and in pairs, so made me wonder if he was alive. Can anyone enlighten me?

The story was rather weak and not very engaging, but the cinematography and the atmosphere quite satisfying.
I actually found the storytelling compelling but I think that this might be because I was aware of an undercurrent that was running through the story, and this was the repeated references to the author Dazai Osamu. Knowing Dazai's own real life story, it becomes impossible to ignore the comparisons between him and Yoshio, especially when Yoshio suggests couple's suicide to Konoko. Rather than being a "sweet romance" it becomes clear that Yoshio is not a good person who is thinking only of what he wants and not what Konoko needs as a person, and this is reflected in his grandson Inagaki/Toshio's nature of selfishness.

If you want to understand, read some of Dazai's biographical data and the descriptions of his books which are largely autobiographical (Wikipedia is quite good on this) and then watch the movie again. It becomes clear what the subtext of the movie is and why there is more being shown than is being said.

Years ago, I really liked the drama Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou, so when this movie came out I avoided watching it. Now that I have seen the movie, I'm glad I did. It is very layered and has a good story to tell, as well as being cinematically lovely.

So did Daisuke's grandmother have more than one child with Yoshio? How could both Daisuke and Inagaki be related?…
Daisuke's grandmother Konoko had one daughter. Yoshio was grandfather to Inagaki/Toshio with another woman. This seems to make Daisuke and Inagaki cousins since they share a grandfather.

When he was courting Konoko, Yoshio was not married, although she already was. His marriage status was clear because we saw a scene where his aunt brought him a matchmaking portrait and was very insistent that he must marry. There was later another scene where the two matchmaking families were meeting together and this indicates that the marriage plans were being completed.

Haven't watched many j dramas ...so I won't comment on that ...but the only reason I watched this one was because…
Quite possibly it's more the "number" of the year that matters and not the number of the p, and it is likely that the poster intends to be someone standing by the modern era by refusing to look back. The problem is that newer is not necessarily better.

.....editing my post because nothing I say will make the least difference.

She has freely admitted that her mind is closed to the issue, that she has no problem with being unwilling to learn about anything different, and that she will not change; thus there is no point in explaining to someone who refuses to hear. It's a shame, and she is the one who loses a chance to watch some truly excellent dramas.

By the way, black and white movies are amazing. Give them a chance.

Since you have already made up your mind before you watch, then you will not understand.

If you reject a show just because it is "old" you could be short-changing yourself from enjoying something really wonderful. Don't just believe because I say, find out for yourself by watching the 2003 version of Kimi wa Petto. It is a better drama than the 2017 re-make. The storyline is fuller and the characters are more realistic.

I watched the 2017 version simply because it had Shison and know him to be a fine actor but I was disappointed in his Momo, and I honestly disliked the actress who played Sumire--she just wasn't as believable as Koyuki in the role. Sometimes re-makes improve on the original; this one did not. Newer is not necessarily better.

When I watched the 2003 version it was Not because of MatsuJun because I didn't know who he was at the time so I was not influenced by fandom; I just thought the drama sounded interesting, and it really was. I re-watched the 2003 version after seeing the 2017 just to see if I was remembering right, and I was. MJ's Momo is amazing.

Although I admire Shison Jun's acting in many roles, I was disappointed by Kimi wa Petto 2017 for many reasons. The best actor for the role of Momo in the many versions of Kimi wa Petto is Matsumoto Jun who originated the role in 2003. MJ's Momo is the one I'd want to meet.

I'm really bad at notising the writers, which is kind of sad because they are often responsible for the rage...…
Writers are sometimes evil, especially when they lead us to hope for endings we don't get. Some people love the Hong Sisters but even thinking of the ending of A Korean Odyssey still makes me angry.

Yes, connections with Russia are part of the plot for this drama.

sh*t - kinda speechless - well a LOT of thoughts running around in my head right now but that end blindsides me…
Loved this drama (well, loved most of it). But I am feeling the same frustration. Really did NOT like the ending. Was expecting a sad one--this is not because I wanted it to be sad but because it was a finale that would make the most sense. What happened seemed very off-key; in fact, most of the final two episodes were somehow not right. Actually things started to go off for me several episodes ago when Hemingway lied to Emi. Then later he said that he "could not lie to her." Was sure he was gonna die rescuing her somehow, though. Worse, when he was asked who the Agent was he said, "Emi" right before he got shot and that was absolutely confounding.

At the beginning there was a sort of innocence about Hemingway but as the story continued, he became shadier--oddly, the shady-ness seemed to increase whenever his hair was cut. And then there he was at the end with hair very short (thinned-out even) looking actually kinda evil.

I just don't get it. And there's no point anyone trying to explain because I'm still not gonna get it.....unless maybe there is a season two where Hemingway somehow gets restored.

Although the film was considered something of a failure and although many today call it "cheesy" when the actors break the fourth wall to speak to the audience, I truly loved One Wonderful Sunday. It touched my heart and it broke my heart a bit, too. If you've seen One Wonderful Sunday, you'll understand what I mean when I say that I stood up and clapped and cheered and cried at the end of the film.

I'm very late answering but I wanted to say that, yes, it is Mao in the final scene after the song lyrics. When…
I've seen the movie a few times because I really love it, so I've thought about it a lot. Another thing that helps me believe that it is Mao at the end is remembering how she reacted in the book store when Kosuke read the English saying that a cat has nine lives. It was like Mao suddenly realized that she could come back to him in her next cat life.
