the best slice of life ever

my favourite show of all time. i cannot stress this enough. there has never been another show made exactly for me and i am so glad i found this
it is the perfect slice of life slash school romance slash coming of age story and it would be my comfort show if i valued it any less than i do but it's so good and i respect it too much to Water it down by watching it constantly
i have zero bad comments about this. it was incredibly funny, and has some brilliant romance. i was originally team jung hwan (because. he's like me) but after getting to know taek they're perfect together (and i love park bo gum now).
and in general i hate timeskips but a single timeskip for the last 4 episodes is the best one i have seen yet. those episodes were really heartwarming and the finale was heartbreaking. it's still in my head a year later. the ost was perfect and still gives me goosebumps.

? Reply 1988 — A Slice of Life That Feels Like Home

Reply 1988 isn’t just a K-drama — it’s an experience. What makes it stand out isn’t flashy plot twists or fantasy elements, but its extraordinary celebration of the ordinary: family dinners, neighborhood chatter, heartfelt hangouts, and the slow, imperfect journey of growing up together.
There’s no rush here. No grand villains. No dramatic miracles. Just ordinary people living ordinary lives and somehow, that becomes the most extraordinary thing. Reply 1988 is more than a show — it’s like opening a time capsule of life’s sweetest, messiest moments. It doesn’t rely on dramatic twists or clichés; instead it finds emotion in simple, truthful human connection. For many fans, it’s not just good — it’s one of the greatest dramas ever made. friendships feel real, the families feel familiar, and the silences say more than words ever could.
This drama understands something very rare:
that love is often quiet, that parents sacrifice without applause, that youth slips away before we even realize it’s happening. Every meal shared, every argument, every late-night walk feels like a memory you didn’t know you had.
By the end, you’re not crying because something sad happened —
you’re crying because it ended. Because you grew up with them. Because you’re grieving a time that never truly comes back.
Reply 1988 doesn’t chase your heart.
It sits beside it — gently, patiently — until you realize it has already become a part of you.
⭐️ 10/10
A masterpiece. A home. A lifetime.

A timeless masterpiece about family, neighborhood warmth, and everyday life. Set in a close-knit community, the drama perfectly portrays parents’ sacrifices, childhood friendships, and the bittersweet moments of growing up. Every character feels real and lovable, making you laugh, cry, and feel nostalgic at the same time. More than the romance, it’s the sense of home, family, and human connection that makes Reply 1988 unforgettable. A truly perfect and heartwarming ending.

Loved each and every character! This is what life should be about.

In most of the drama, Kim Joo Hyuk's portryal of Choi Taek (The future 'How I met your mother' version) doesn't seem like the Choi Taek we have seen through the ages. At least not until the final few episodes. The future Choi Taek seems more like Kim Jung Hwan, more like they might have swapped bodies.

Episode 9 gives us pretty straightforward clue that the future husband is Choi Taek but his personality seems so different that it must have kept viewers back then on their toes. (Thankfully, I knew the identity before going in) Since she said 30 years, I understand the changes but it still seems like a complete personality transplant to me.

This is my first Park Bo Gum drama and his smile is so damn adorable and goofy. Reminds me of Jung Hae In's adorableness from One Spring Night. (I saw the latter first,)

Talk about Jung Hae In and there he is in episode 13. What a great surprise.

Episode 15, that's when Chou Taek finds our that Jung hwan likes Deok Sun. I did feel a little frustration for the lack of romantic development at the point but then I liked how things turned out as well. I adored the way they loved and respected each other, especially Choi Taek and Jung Hwan.

I wanted to see more of Taek and Deok Sun's dating era, but it was cut short.

Although the drama was great and I will come back for seconds, I do feel that they could have done a better potrayal of the future Choi Taek, because other than a gimmick that keeps people on their toes it didn't make sense. Because in the final few episode he seemed more like Choi Taek. Instead of showing such drastic change in personlity, they could have been a bit subtle about it.

Delightful, heartwarming, beautiful, and never dull.

This drama took me back in time - mix tapes. rubiks cubes, going crazy for stars, reading trashy teenage smut... I could go on and on. The same teenage experience, just on the other side of the world from me. Even the fashion was recognizable. The storytelling device of having their older selves being interviewed gave the feeling that everything in the past was simply reminiscing about their journey into adulthood, which gave it a pleasant feeling,. Just for the nostalgia alone this is easily worth 10 stars, but it is so much more than just that.

The thing that struck me the most about this drama was the sense of community. This is not the first time I have found this in a Korean drama, but every time it moves me a lot, and every time it is presented in a different way. Here in this alley there were clearly people better off than others, but at no time was this division made into a wedge to drive people apart - everyone shared. Food, house chores, watching children, gossip, laughter, tears, troubles - this is a list that could go on and on. The adults shared a bond, and so did the kids. The flashback scenes of them all as very small children growing up together made it easy to see why they were all so close. In this drama the community was essentially one big family - emphasized by the fact that they called for all the neighbors to jump into the family photo.

The acting was superb. The young people were all so well-performed that it was a particularly immersive show - they truly seemed like kids just living their daily lives. They were not all perfect students or perfectly behaved, but they were all good to one another and to the people around them. The adults were played nicely also, all with humanizing quirks and well-developed personalities.

The music was nice; presumably comprised of Korean songs well-suited to the late eighties to mid-nineties. In general it did not pull me in as much as other aspects of the show did since it wasn't the popular music of my youth, but it was all quite enjoyable anyway.

Definitely a show worth watching - despite the long episodes I kept not wanting to stop because the story is so compelling.

Best kdrama for me!

One of the best kdrama i ever watched. Sadly, i'm 10 years late to this drama. I thought that this drama will be boring but i'm wrong. The casts fits the role perfectly. I don't know how to move on to this drama and to all the casts. Special mention to Sunwoo and Bora! I love them so much. It's their 10th year anniversary on november and i'm hoping and praying for season 2. Sorry for my bad english.

An excellent portrayal of love, family, and friendship from a small fragment of the past

Masterfully depicted journey back in time, this drama successfully evoked feelings of nostalgia and deep emotions of joy mixed with sorrow within me, especially when one becomes aware of the passage of time and the realization that everything that once was can no longer be reclaimed. Yet, in the end, only love remains.

Story: 10.0
Through the portrayal of the lives of several families, encompassing their struggles, challenges, moments of bliss, failures, successes, first loves, and heartaches, the narrative seamlessly transports us to the year 1988, during the Olympic Games in Korea. It grants us a glimpse and a sense of the prevailing atmosphere of that era. A captivating narrative unfolds, beautiful story of love, family, friendship, and the transformative journey to adulthood.

Actors: 10.0
The cast delivered an outstanding performance, effectively transmuting emotions from the television screen to captivate the audience in a truly remarkable manner.

Music: 9.0
Even though it's fitting into the general atmosphere that prevails throughout the series, I give it 9.0

Re-watch: 10.0
The profound impact this series can leave on the viewer suggests that it has great potential for repeated viewings, making it a timeless show to revisit in the future.

I wholeheartedly recommend this show.

A love poem to youth

I absolutely loved this entire show, from the story to the actors, every single bit was perfect. I loved how all the relationships were portrayed, especially the parents, I feel like not alot of slice of life dramas focus on the parents youth, so this was a breath of fresh air. I loved how the children's lives progressed as they grew up from teens to adults, and how their relationships were with their parents and eachother. "When life gives you tangerines" is very similar to this in the impact it has on youth and life.

Nostalgic to the Very End

Not even being Korean, I am able to sympathize with the nostalgia of Reply 1988. The story is a sweet reminder of a slower time when you lived for hanging out with the neighborhood kids. I loved how I was able to learn about some pop culture and world events in Korea through this story as well. The acting was wonderful and really believable. I was truly invested by episode 3. I highly recommend this slice of life drama to anyone who needs a walk down memory lane - the nostalgia truly does cross cultural borders.

All time favorite!

I haven't watched anything so beautifully written. Reply 1988 is a mix of laughter and tears, joy and misery, happiness and sadness. It's a pretty representation of how bittersweet life is. This kdrama is an example that not every story needs a villain and how every character can be well written.
I haven't watched anything this refreshing for ages.

“Reply 1988” isn’t just a drama — it’s a love letter to youth, family, and the ordinary moments that shape our lives. It doesn’t rely on flashy twists or exaggerated emotions. Instead, it finds beauty in the small things: shared meals, quiet streets, laughter echoing through a neighborhood, and the comfort of people who truly know you.

Set in late-1980s Seoul, the show beautifully recreates an era before smartphones and social media — when human connection was real, messy, and irreplaceable. Every character feels like someone you’ve known forever. The parents are just as memorable as the kids, each written with warmth, flaws, and depth. Their stories intertwine seamlessly, reminding us that life is built not on grand events but on everyday kindness and love.

The cast is phenomenal. Hyeri brings genuine emotion and humor as Deok-sun, while Ryu Jun-yeol and Park Bo-gum deliver unforgettable performances filled with quiet longing and friendship. The chemistry among the five friends is so natural that it feels unscripted.

What truly sets “Reply 1988” apart is how it balances laughter and tears. It makes you smile one minute and cry the next — not because it manipulates your feelings, but because it reflects real life.

By the final episode, you don’t just finish a show — you say goodbye to a family you’ve grown to love. “Reply 1988” is comforting, sincere, and timeless. A masterpiece that reminds us to treasure the people and moments that make life worth living.
