This dram probably the first tragic drama I've eve watched. I have never ever loved and hated a drama at the same time before. Watching GMP made me realise how emotionally unstable I am haha.
The drama really gave me a glimpse of riding on roller coaster and lots of plot twists which is make sense for dramas. Even though the drama had tons of angst, painful moments and loopholes, it was still one of my favourite historical cdrama.

STORY
Despite the beautiful costumes and statisfied visual, the story is typical like other cdramas, I think it is similar to The Rise of Phoenixes with the inconsistency in characters. Normally there are outright heroes, villains, and anti-heroes in a show. The plot follows your basic, this made the drama a lot more watchable because I wasn't constantly frustrated and think a lot with the characters and story. What I frustated the most is their "love story" which made me wonder and questioning a lot of things yet imagining my own ending. In order to seek justice that happened 20 years ago, Li ChengYin betrayed betrayed the trust of the woman he loves, how did he expect her to forgive him while he spends a lifetime full of regret and loneliness.
I think it really took so much time to regain their memories, I mean the progress is really slow. Li ChengYin did regain his memories on two last episodes which is really frustated and sucks to watch. I have been waiting their regaining their memories on E20-30 so we could see the development of each characters.
There is two biggest problem in this drama is First, when Gu Jian pretending to be Gu Xiao Wu which was very nightmare for me and I lost my interest to watch every episodes that his in and second, their love story has ended into tragic one.

CAST
- Li ChengYin
This bloody jerk! I like the way he looks at Xiao Feng and his love towards her. The first 10th episodes most likely my favourite part. I felt the villain side of Li ChengYin over his "Love" and it was really intersting for me since not many dramas chose to betray their love ones. I found myself liking the drama more and more as I fell into the trap of forgiving him, or even pitying him.
- Xiao Feng
Afterall, she is just very beautiful princess who seeking attention at the same time all her want to pity her injustice towards her clans. She is very outright to show her feeling
- Gu Jian
He is better died. All he thinks his lifes with Xiao Feng which is only on his imagination. I was really upset at the writer because he is still alive until 40 episodes.

OVERALL
TBH, I really love the OTP a lot. I like how the actor potrayed Li ChengYin perfectly even though there is so much overacted. If you like fast food, you could try to watch this one. This is the best fast food when you craving for tragic drama. This drama is full of angst and painful in order to sacrified for the country and clan, you had to betray your beloved lady.. From the beginning they never meant to live a happy life. He broke her heart and he made her cry, well reality is not all about a happy ending..

One of a kind drama, especially for a historical c-drama

I don't know what to say...Goodbye, my princess is my favorite c-drama in terms of being a historical drama. The actors' chemistry is amazing, the main characters are strong and independent, the storyline from the original novel is so well executed, and their costumes are extremely beautiful and unique. Even though there isn't a happy ending (more of a bittersweet love story), I think it was the right decision considering he hurt her so much. BUT I love the extra scenes the director came up with at the end, when they are reincarnated in modern-day, living their lives together. Some people may hate it because of how messed up the main character is but... I sorta like it, it portrays how political matters affected one's life and what normally happened back in the day.. besides all the cute romance scenes of course.

OST: The BEST idk what to say lol, the sad songs will make you cry because you will remember all the sad scenes and yet the happy songs will make your heart sink, remembering all the good times they shared together.

BTW: I just want to warn you that this is the kind of drama that will leave you feeling all kinds of things when you finished it. It took me a whole 2 weeks to recover lol. I even dedicated an MV to them on my youtube channel if y'all are interested "Xiao Feng Li & Cheng Yin (Goodbye My Princess 东宫 MV) {Love Catastrophe}" channel name "Emma Lee" :)

HOWEVER: I don't think I would want to rewatch it, it's a long drama and I think it's one that I will rewatch scenes... not the entire drama.

Sad, heartbreaking but beautiful drama

Omg this is in my top 5 chinese dramas for sure! At first I was reluctant to give this a try, but i am glad i watched it. First of all, the cast are amazing. Their acting is 10/10 especially the main male lead. It's amazing how he immediately transforms between his different personalities. Also, I love how the main female lead was able to portray her emotions really well. It evoked my emotions so much just from watching her every time something heartbreaking happened. I think that this drama was also written very well and it is one of the most heartbreaking chinese historical drama ever; the way that the main male lead treated the female lead... I cried so much watching this. I was sucked into it from start to finish and omg I have to say that the clothes are so beautiful in this drama too!
The OST's are also really beautiful and it is really melancholic.
Overall I would highly, highly recommend this drama and I would put it in my top 5.

Loved this story!

This was such a classic story. The main leads were so good looking. The story was so intense. I wish it didn’t end the way it did. I truly wished he ended up with her. I watched it over and over like a million times. The characters were so well casted. If it hadn’t end the way it did, there could have been a season two just as crazy and twisted. I feel so bad for the other girl. She truly did love him. Overall, i would recommend for everyone. It’s gonna forever be a favorite of mines.

I will drink or swim in that forgetfulness river if i want to just so i could watch this again.

Best xianxia drama for me!

Bro this is the best drama in 2019 and in xianxia genre overall. I've enjoyed every bit of this drama and if you are looking for a sign to watch it, but be ready and prepare some tissue paper because you are gonna shed a lot of tears, especially when it's about to end.

First of all, I didn't really think of watching this because I don't like tearjerking dramas but I ran out of dramas to watch and I will bore to death if I don't watch dramas, so I tried watching the first few episodes and I got hooked and so here I am writing a review on how much I loved it.

The acting was good between the leads, (not to mention they all are visuals so that's also a reason I watched this lol) especially the one who plays li chengyin, he looks like he's truly in love with her and he conveys his emotions so well using his eyes. I love their chemistry and would love to see them again in another drama.

I hated how the prince was so cold towards her and will literally kill everyone that gets in the way of them and he literally killed her family just for the sake of power, I know he wouldn't and can't do that to xiaofeng but imagine if he loses his feeling, he was once infatuated with sese but he disrespected her right after they got married...he was a huge redflag but he was hot sooooo and also both male lead and second lead doesn't deserve xiaofeng lol at one point they both used her i just wanted her to yk live and be happy by herself or besides adu and her friends at the brothel but she had to do it. Someone told me to watch the directors cut so I will watch it and hopefully i get to see and understand where chengyin is coming from.

The story was well written, I loved how my emotions were a rollercoaster while watching this, I would definitely rewatch this again in the future if I want to shed tears again lmao

The music makes me want to cry everytime I listen to it. I loved the theme song and I listen to it every now and then lol I will forever miss this drama and would watch it again. This drama is so underrated it's sad Y'ALL BETTER WATCH IT.

Drink from the fountain of forgetfulness, to experience this drama again.

This remarkable drama captured my heart and mind and made me feel like a true witness to each characters happiness and pain. The characters were well developed, the production was amazing, the OSTs are crafted to make you long for the sweet happiness that comes with belonging to a "home" that all of the characters are searching for. There are multiple moments, happy and sad, where the scene is so captivating, I found myself tunnel visioned into the characters emotions and experience, as if I was there with them.
The actors, Pang Xiao Ran and Cheng Xi Xui completely transformed into Xiao Feng and Gu Xiao Wu (Li Chenying) and had me believing that these two characters are real human beings with complex personalities and lives. The characters are shown as young and pure of heart. That purity is never completely lost, eventhough we see Li Chenying make detrimental decisions that causes death, destruction and pain at the expense of Xiao Feng. He has remorse for her, but at the same time, because he does not understand the loving world outside of the treacherous imperial family, he cannot control who he was molded to become and continues to make selfish self depracating decisions, forcing his one chance at happiness to move further and further away from him.
On the other hand Xiao Feng, who is easily accepted into the imperial family, wants nothing to do with the imprisonment that comes along with the riches of being a part of the imperial family. She only wants to find a place in the world, that can be home. As much as she loves Li Chingyin, he will never be able to give that to her. Had he truly been Gu Xiaowu, they would've enjoyed true happiness, building a home and living for each other instead of for their states.
Any future remakes of this drama will be hard pressed for comparable success, as all of the pieces for this version of Goodbye My Princess, which includes all of the side characters and their experiences, so don't fast forward anything, worked to make this the most epic historical tragedy that I've ever seen.

unforgettable lovestory for lovers of angst

I am actually listening to the ost, love catastrophe, as I write this review. Even after finishing this drama, the story continues to linger with me. This is the power of the original book and also the scriptwriting, acting, pacing, and original soundtrack.

Now, this drama isn't for anyone who cannot handle angst that will make you want to pull your hair a little bit at the character's actions, lol. Yet still, in my opinion, I cannot imagine my life without it now. It is just such a powerful story that I have to keep thinking about it and how everything ended. Trust me, this drama will stick with you if you let it.

I think one of my favorite aspects of this drama is the pacing of tragedy. You see, there are dramas I have tried that have similar plots (The wolf is an example) but the pacing was too fast. Basically, we are introduced to them and get to know them before it all goes to hell first, seeing all the happy memories play out slowly and learning the motives.

The acting was amazing and I always think of how it was so hard for Chen Xingxu to break character that he continued crying during one of the powerful scenes & Peng Xiaoran had to comfort him, so heartbreaking. Anyway, I can't imagine anyone else in their characters and this is a testament to their acting.

The ost is one of my favorites ever and at first, I'd tear up every time I heard it again, LMAO.

**spoilers now**

Whilst the ending is for a lot of people, a reason they may not watch, I can understand why. I was even spoiled the ending before I watched and I still cried for like a day after. But it made sense. It was not a non-sensical ending or rushed, it fits with what happened and her suicide was absolutely preventable if ML had chosen love over power in the first place, which made it all the more heart-wrenching. You could feel his denial and regret in his old age. He and many other events caused her to lose everything and he foolishly believed he could still be with her after when she proved this was not the case.

Overall, I think I'll remember this story forever.

This is my first historical C-Drama I’ve ever watched, and now that I’m finished with it, I can’t seem to find any dramas like this one where it has a great storyline, cast, acting and soundtrack. I was skeptical at first due to it being a tragedy, and being a historical C-drama as I’ve never been interested in historical dramas. And I’m pleased to say that I’m glad I did watch this drama.

Eps. 1-12 are the best as we’re being introduced into the characters and the relationship between Xiao Feng and Gu Xiao Wu/Li Chengyin is blossoming. The firefly scene, following up with the wolf and wedding scenes where one of my favorite moments of the whole drama. The drama began to drag after they both lose their memories and I began to skip parts that involved political issues however, watching the two leads fall in love all over again kept me going.

The chemistry and acting in this drama just BLEW me out of this universe. Although the two leads are newbie actors, they did an amazing job of portraying their characters. It was a constant rollercoaster of sadness, betrayal, denial (at least for me), and more. There were times where I’d watch Peng Xiaoran’s crying scenes, and it made me feel so uncomfortable and sad to just watch her cry and be so devastated but not be able to do anything about her situation. Chen Xingxu’s crying scene at the very end was just so amazing, he literally deserves an award for it. After shooting that scene, the whole crew and Peng Xiaoran had to snap him out of character because he was just so heartbroken. There were also times where he acted so well as LCY, where it was SCARY to see him pull off this psycho that could be so obsessive over XF, and even kill to be able to control her.

The soundtrack was amazing, as I still listen to it on repeat. The Fox song has such an amazing story that goes right along with this drama.
The only problems that I really had with the drama was that LCY seemed to take his ‘acting’ of dislike towards XF too far at times. I did not like Sese, and although I love Peng Xiaoran’s acting of XF, they made her character look too foolish at times. I don’t understand why XF has to use her life as a way to prevent war, but it’s a tragedy.

Overall, this drama is worth the 10 stars. There aren’t too much sweet moments/scenes after they fall in love the first time, but they do have their moments here and there as they fall in love again the second time around. It’s a drama that definitely leaves you lingering and wanting more despite the tragic ending.

东宫 - Good Bye, My Princess

A well written drama and well performed by all the actors and actresses, especially the main characters, but also the others have made this drama a complete success.
The director and the screenwriters should be proud for having be able to create such story, in fact the story is so realistic and beautiful. The dialogues are refined and everything is done with passion, love and dedication. The watchers cannot make any expectations about what will happen.
The composer has written instrumental musics and songs that are the best that i ever heard. It seems that they have done this romatic drama series beginning from the songs.

I don't know why it ended the way it did but it did. I like how the writers were not afraid to write that death scene into the drama. To me this drama is on par with Moon Embracing the Sun and 10 Miles of Peach Blossoms. I cried like a baby . I just love this drama. I now have something I can rewatch instead of Moon Embracing the Sun or Peach Blossom. The loyalty shown to the Emperors and Kings, the family connections were amazing. For the life of me I do not understand now one man can pretend to have a stroke all those years and sit in court all day long.

“Reasons for dropping this”

Dropped it at episode 32, yea the ML is bad for betraying her trust, but I don’t blame him one bit for killing the grandfather and his lawless warriors, and after they went to the ML kingdom the writing went downhill and repetitive 🤮
1. the FL character became irritating for the amount of trouble she cause at every scene she’s in.
2. the ML disgusts me because he was fine with throwing his childhood lover harms way to protect the irresponsible FL.
3. The Master is worse because he’s judging the ML when he caused the same damage
The FL sneak out almost every night to drink it’s quite crazy for a teenage girl, Master casually going into a married woman’s room at night is disturbing, it’s supposed to be a emotional wreck, but after episode 9 I became annoyed by almost all the FL decisions, she Lowkey killed more people killed with her foolishness
