NOT Eternal Love

One earlier reviewer put it best. This is not a love drama, it is a revenge drama. Think of Eternal Love but starting off on the grasslands and then moving on to the palace. It had the potential to be Eternal Love but it doesn't even come close. Even though I'm not a fan of xianxia, something about the pacing of this show and the growth of its characters just don't reach the level of Eternal Love. The pacing too is not as good as it doesn't explore many different locations and sub-stories.

In terms of political intrigues, there was nothing mysterious about trying to identify the real big bad or clever about the schemes. It was just evil plotting and childish too. Neither the level of court politics nor concubine politics comes anywhere close dramas such as Yanxi Palace, Empresses in the Palace, or Scarlett Heart.

In addition, the characters are not as loveable. I didn't start off liking the leads in Eternal Love but I grew to as I felt they developed and matured. I can't really say the same for this show. Except for the Princess who grew as a person, the rest of the characters didn't.

Overall, watch it if you have withdrawal symptoms from military and political dramas otherwise give it a miss and watch the Long Ballad instead. It also starts off in the grasslands and moves to court (well, sort of) but has far more destinations and sub-stories that keep the pace quick and engaging.

Basically I avoid drama that has sad ending. But this one is different. I've already developed a big interest to this drama since they announced the airing date and release the posters. The lead actor and actress are very young and fresh, and they are really beautiful pairs. And when the audience were questioning about the ending, it made me more curious with this drama. And my curiosity was answered satisfyingly.

Story: From the title of this drama, you already can guess that this is a sad romance drama. However, the sadness they brought was not cheesy. The story was so touching that I can't stop bursting into tears in almost episode. Not only the romance, but also the relation between family and friendship. And the palace intrigue was also another plus point to this drama. I always like palace politics which is smart but not exaggerating. Last but not least, I can't hate the main male character even he was a real jerk. Wondering why?

Acting: China really has lots of new potential young actors. And beside their good looking face, they also good in act. This drama was one of the drama which has good castings. At first I thought the lead actor acting was a little bit stiff, but in his acting continue to grow and in the end, it really bloom. The lead actress was very beautiful and she really has princess aura in her character. Not Cinderella type, but strong princess who can stand by herself.

Music: The OST are very amazing. I love it and it match every romantic and tear jerking scenes in this drama.

Rewatch value: I would not suggest to rewatch it specially if you feel like very hard to move on from this drama (as I do). But after a while, I do watch it again because I miss the main couple. (and you can watch this drama side story about the main couple in modern life era on youtube)

Overall: I recommend this drama if somehow you like to watch melodrama. Like I said before, this is sad drama, but for no reason, it is also one of satisfying drama for me.

I just finished this drama ... I wrote a little of my review of this drama ...

In terms of the story, honestly ... this drama is only good at the beginning of the story and starts boring after turning to the eastern palace (tong gong) with a simple story with 50 episodes as if it has been stretched out with problems of memory ... confusing costumes between Japan and China made me judge badly the unclear costume order for this drama ...

In terms of acting, there are only a few who might have pretty good acting skills like main casts maybe...

In terms of music, maybe nothing special for me ...

Overall I gave a rating of 5 for this drama ...

Is it really considered a love story?!

I have to say that I did not complete this show and don't know if I ever will.
I feel really torn about this show. It is my second time trying to watch it. The first time I spoiled myself with the ending. Since the comments said the show had a tragic ending, at the time I only wanted to watch shows with a good ending so I decided to drop it. When I decided to go back to the show, fully knowing how it would end, I was prepared and ok with it. But watching the episodes and seeing how the ML abuse the FL, I can't take it.
The first line of the show's description literally says: ''A love story revolves around the 9th Princess of Western Liang as she journeys to the Central Plains to fulfill a marriage alliance with the Crown Prince.'' How are you going to call this a love story and have him abuse her every episode to "protect" her. Plus I've read that he actually rapes her. I'm sorry but I really can't do with any of that, and that she still falls in love with him despite all that he does to her.
Also, so many of the choices the other characters take really doesn't make sense and are more frustrating than enjoyable.
Sucks because I did quite like the plot about both of them losing their memories and the setting of the show.

Tired of weak baby doll leads. Would like to see a young lady that has a mind and figures out early how to play Go. Luv the costumes but these little spoiled brats r getting boring especially if they can solve the riddle in front of them. In this story there is yet to be a wise woman to help her play the game! ????????

This is still worth watching but I am looking for the warfare to begin. Xxxxxxxxxcxxccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc ccccccccccccccccccxxxxxcccccccccccccccccccccccccccvcvvvvvvvvv

Heartbreaking Story

This drama been in watch list for some time, but as chinese drama usually come with many episodes, I just need time to prepare, because I don't like being disturbed when watching. From the first episode really capture my heart, beautiful scenery also the story somehow promising. Yet I find myself deeply intach with this drama for few days, apart from clichè scenes, the rest are good although there're a lot of politic conflict story more than the love relation story. Slowly I just mesmerized with the actor and actress acting, they're so good to potrait the emotion especially couple last episodes, thats just heart breaking, I cry a lot and can't move on from this drama, no wonder this was recommended drama back on 2019. Not missing the ost too, only 3 songs but deep meaning and complete this drama. Maybe I'll rewatch it again for the director's cut, dunno when but will.

Excellent Heartbreaking Drama

I just watched this goodbye my princess drama (2019) in 2024. This is very late.
Because I mostly watched happy ending romance drama and crime thriller drama series.
The story, plots, acting are excellent.
The story is itself strong, solid and deep!!
I still can’t move on from this drama.
Both main lead actor and actress are really deep and excellent in acting.
I prefer actor’s acting skills. He can show detail acting with eyes , control facial expressions, changing his acting within seconds when plot of drama was needed.
This is really really heartbreaking, heart wrenching, heartfelt.
Although actor character is red flag, he has own reason to do those cruel things.
I feel sorry for both actor and actress characters.
💔💔💔😭😭😭😭
Best Heartbreaking Drama

My Roman Empire.

Li Chengyin and Xiaofeng’s love story was doomed since the beginning. Every happy moment was followed by slaughter and despair. They kept falling in love with each other despite everything till hating themselves. Their story is truly the most painful.

Both actors did great in their roles, especially the FL: i felt every emotion she wanted to convey. It must have been so difficult for them to shoot some scenes and they truly did great.

It’s the most angsty drama I’ve ever watched because there was no salvation for their love story. It’s powerful because it moves you and it’ll keep lingering in your mind for days.. They made it impossible to forget.

No Message, No Maturity: A Drama Disguised as Tragedy, Saying Nothing

This drama left me feeling completely detached from the characters and their story. I couldn’t connect with them at all. From the very beginning, the female lead struck me as immature, self-centered, continually ran from duty, and her chracter never truly develops. It’s not that her suffering isn’t real — it’s that the way it’s portrayed lacks emotional weight and nuance.

After episode 14, the show felt like an entirely different drama. Once they jumped into the river of forgetfulness, the pacing changed dramatically — what followed was courtroom intrigue and constant bickering. I fast-forwarded entire episodes. I was tempted to drop the show altogether, but my curiosity kept me watching — just barely. Despite skipping scenes, I still wanted to see how things would play out, which is perhaps the only reason I finished it.

But in terms of emotional payoff or storytelling depth, I felt like the drama went nowhere. The romance was underdeveloped from the start and clearly doomed. There was never space for love to grow or deepen — I honestly don’t even know if there was a real love story to tell here. Why would the male lead fall in love with someone he believes belongs to the tribe that murdered his brother?

The male lead himself showed a kind of weakness — not in the vulnerable, human sense, but in the way his emotions and motivations never seem firmly grounded. At times, he came across as very smart and scheming and next moment childish.

Overall, the drama didn’t seem to know what it wanted to say, except that people scheme, go to war, and destroy one another in the name of loyalty or revenge. But there was nothing truly educative about it. No emotional wisdom. No real moral reflection.

Yes, the scenery was lovely, and the theme song (Love Catastrophe) was absolutely beautiful — I listened to it on repeat. But aside from that, there’s very little I found redeeming here. I would call it a complete waste of time. It left me cold.
I couldn’t care less whether the main leads ended up together or not. They felt like complete strangers, and honestly, it was good that they were separated forever — something always felt off about them being together anyway.

I wouldn’t recommend it to someone looking for depth, development, or genuine romantic tension.

This drama could have been tragic and meaningful, but instead, it was ultimately empty.
