Oshin was no longer the same girl…

“She never thought of herself, and she lived for her family. That's how a woman lives...For her family.The Old Madame words rang true to Oshin now.Oshin wanted more out of life...More than her mother or her grandmother.Oshin didn't want to find comfort in death.Oshin felt both pity and anger at what had happened to her grandmother.- I'll work hard, and I'll make a lot of money.- I don't want to be like Grandma... I don't want to have nothing when I die... I'll never be a sharecropper!Oshin was headed back to Sakata...But Oshin was no longer the same girl...She was growing up...”These words were like speaking to me. I was basically having the same thought when my grandma (my mom’s mother) passed away a few years ago. Although she didn’t die out of poverty, her family also used to be poor and she worked so hard her whole life to support her family, her late husband and children. She’d sacrificed a lot when she was alive. Everyone praised her life for her great sacrifices while I pitied her and got mad inside. This asadora was made in the 80s, but I’m sad that these words are still a fact in a lot of places today, including mine. A lot of people here still think a woman’s life depends on her husband, and after she gets married, her life will be completely different, and she will be the one who sacrifices a lot and still get criticized for not being a good wife material enough.Oshin was growing up so early, with this mindset, but I think that’s the spirit that she should have! And I’m glad that a lot of women in today’s world also have a better mindset. I was thinking of When Life Gives You Tangerines when I watched this episode today.
