Happy 3rd anniversary, everyone!
3 years since the drama first brought in a new wave of fans and introduced one of the most memorable characters ever to the world. 2 years since the curtains fell though the novel and its characters live on in our hearts. And almost 3 years since I first posted in this thread, asking if anyone had a comparison between the original and revised versions. How time has flown!
Nice to see you here liddi!

It is amazing how I still find myself seeing echoes of Xiang Liu or Xiao Yao in different dramas. Has anyone watched 雀骨 Key to the Phoenix Heart, which has unexpectedly ranked as one of my favourites for many reasons. Xiao Wuyi reminds me a lot of Xiang Liu in terms of how he always put himself front and center in any battle, fiercely protecting everything and everyone he loves - his provision for Xie Jiayu, knowing that he goes to certain death. Even the lines that were used to describe him echoed Xiang Liu so much - giving his all for everyone else and leaving nothing for himself, wanting her to live well after his death.
It was on my radar, but I hadn't decided whether to watch it or not. I'll have to add it to my PTW list ^^
liddi:
Incidentally, it appears Xiang Liu's thread (Xiang Liu's Luxury Lounge) in LYF S2 page no longer exists? As such, the novel to LYF to A Lifetime Love mapping is also gone. Come to think of it, is it my imagination or we can only see 6 discussion threads for each drama page? Does it mean the remaining discussion threads have been deleted? Argh... all the ramblings!
I went and saved a personal copy of the story of Boyazi and Zhong Ziqi post that Kokuto helped me find in this discussion thread so I could refer back to it more easily and still have a copy even if this thread were to be deleted, out of an abundance of caution. But it really would be a shame to lose hundreds of pages of discussion if that were to happen.
Also a shame to lose any of the smaller discussion threads. I think that thread was the one where Elise originally shared the comment that inspired my YaoLiu fic and where the initial premise was fleshed out a bit. Bit sad that that discussion can't be accessed anymore.

Do let me know how you find it if you do watch!

I went to check in S2. Yes the thread is gone. 😭The rest can still be found if u click on the Discussion button at the top of the page.

It's actually really strange why that particular thread was deleted since I can see other older threads (dating back Feb 2024) still available. I am hoping that it is just archived and can be restored... but I'm not really holding my breath at this stage. I have saved excerpts of discussions in the threads over the years for ease of reference (it's so hard to search the threads!), but it would be great if they all remain accessible. Fingers crossed all other threads remain intact. My concern is deletion or archival of threads that have been inactive for too long.

I can't believe it's been another year. I'm trying to get back to my annotation thread, but I have definitely bitten off more than I thought. There is SO much. Of course, I may be reading alot more than I should into it. lol
Kokuto:
For example, I realized that when XY first stumbled on beggar Jing at the river, she was trying to bag a bird that flew into the brush he was lying in. But on the rewatch, I realized there were TWO birds, and they looked like white herons / egrets. When she throws the rock, they fly off. But in the book (Koala's translation), it doesn't happen quite that way, but she's watching swans at the river. So, now I'm trying to find out the birds symbolize in Chinese folklore ... and thinking about finding the Chinese text to see if they were swans or herons or something else.
It's a sickness. LOL
Yes, it could be. Let me check. When you're having these "symptoms," are they sometimes accompanied by inexplicable alternating bouts of elation and melancholy? I've heard these symptoms are hard to control and quite long-lasting, if not permanent. So far, research is inconclusive about any effective treatment for this condition. I believe the official diagnosis is called LYF Fever, found in recent years to infect many unsuspecting people mysteriously during the summer, often starting in July. :-)
Lol, I know exactly what you mean. When we discussed the Ruomu tree in the first episode the last time, I started to review the novel again to see if I missed anything and quickly got swept up into a dozen other distractions. Of course, that led me to various other topics and comparing this and that, back and forth between manuscripts. Yeah, I suspect many of us share in the same habit. I see you've made even more impressive progress on your thread. Can't wait to see the next episode based on the fascinating nuggets you've already shared.

@AH @liddi ,It's not lost at all. Just select the top menu and click on Discussion, and all the threads will show up.
Yes, most of the threads are still there. However, there is one in the S2 page that is missing - What the Shell Bar Xiang Liu's Luxury Lounge.
Maybe Nath deleted the thread? But the Xiang Liu/TJC focused one on Season 1 board is still there, I would think she would delete them both if that was the case. I'll check with her.

Nath discovered that if you deactivate your account, it deletes any thread you started. =_=
I've no idea who that was a good feature for a forum. But she reactivated her account and it re-appeared. If her other thread is here, I don't think she deactivated again.

LOL! Those are the exact symptoms!
Yes, that's what takes so much time. Distractions, as you realize how things repeat, or ask why this was added or subtracted from the novel. And then trying to organize and synthesize it. Asking a lot of my poor brain. ;p
Good to see you Snowcup, too!

I have been working through the 2013 vs 2019 comparisons since last year... but had to take a breather due to real life demands. Interestingly enough, Xiang Liu's lines have mostly remained intact between the two versions... which to me, implies that Tong Hua's vision of him never wavered from the one she grieved for after seeing snow on a sunny day back in 2012:
I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who has LYF Fever. lol
Are there really that many changes between the two versions? Besides the names, of course. I'll have to keep an eye open for any changes for XL's lines between the drama and the book. I've noticed already there were changes for YaoJing -- small, but some significant.
Love that passage! You know how much XL still lives with Tong Hua, given the nods to him in Filter. I'm wondering if she'll sneak in a reference or two in Against the Current? Though that is based off a book.

I haven't watched that. I've heard mixed reviews, but your recommendation will put it on my long list of TBW. Even Avenue X had nice things to say about it, but she liked the older actors in it, too. People are already making comparisons between XL and Tan Jian Ci's newest role, the general Xie Qi Shan. It's going to be a long impatient wait for that drama to air.
liddi:
But to be fair, if LYF had ended in any other way, it would not have seared our hearts so much, even after so many years.
I think this is true. If it had been a 'happy ending,' we probably could have let go.

THANK YOU! I had copied the link to the invaluable chart you provided, but of course, it doesn't work now.
Happy third annyversary, everyone!
https://www.dogbook.cc/2221.html if anyone is interested, bere is a link to download the 2019's version of the novel. You can't read it online, so you can't use google translator, but there are other ways. I'd go for the EPUB, the PDF is a scanned version, so copy paste won't work.
@kokuto
The translation from the chinese text
"Life Is But a Fleeting Dream
That day was exactly the same as the thousands of days before it.
After a few roosters crowed, the sound of people’s voices gradually began to fill Qingshui Town. Early in the morning, Lao Mu from Huichun Hall went to buy mutton from Gao, the butcher who had risen early to slaughter a sheep. The two young apprentices busied themselves in front of the shop, preparing to open for business once the sky was fully bright.
The physician Wen Xiaoliu held a bowl of mutton soup in one hand and a piece of flatbread in the other, squatting on the threshold of the back courtyard as he ate noisily.
Beyond the blue stone steps lay two and a half mu of sloping land planted with medicinal herbs. Following the stone path in the middle downward was a narrow river. At that moment, the morning sun had just risen. Mist hovered above the river’s surface, golden light glittered across the water, wildflowers bloomed brilliantly along both banks, and water birds rose and fell gracefully. The scene was truly picturesque.
As Xiaoliu watched, he thought to himself that the swans were rather plump. Catching two of them and roasting them would probably make a delicious meal.
After finishing the bowl of hot soup, he placed the dirty bowl into the wooden bucket beside the threshold. There was already a stack of dirty bowls inside. Xiaoliu carried the bucket out of the courtyard and went to the river to wash them.
Lying in the bushes by the river was a dark, shadowy shape. He could not tell what kind of bird it was. Wen Xiaoliu put down the bucket, casually picked up a stone, and threw it over. The stone struck the black shape, yet the shadow did not flap its wings and fly away.
Wen Xiaoliu froze.
Since when did I become so accurate that I never miss?
He walked a few steps closer and leaned forward to look. It was not a bird at all—it was a person."

Interesting comparing this to Koala's translation. Thanks, again!

Probably the same brain-trust that gave us a forum without a search function :-). Nath hasn't deactivated her account, but she confirmed that she deleted the Xiang Liu thread in the Season 2 forum. She's leaving the season 1 thread alone, at least for now.
