After chp 47 or whatever chapter it was where he basically asked if he ever stood a chance, that's what I've assumed as well. That's also why I think lost you forever is the perfect title for this show because we get to see all the things/paths that each of them took which resulted in him losing her forever.

Because when she meet her man's trio firstly when she was still a man - it was a close timing for them/all to get equitable a chance than. And it would have been a perfect timing for her too to learn her true parenting line at that moment  somehow...To even take time to , while still in a man body, probe them all...

He would than have equitable chances to win her heart:): 

TBH, if CX confessed to XY right at the start, we wouldn't even have a story, since the other 2 guys would not have a chance. CX has always been number 1 in XY's heart, even at the end of the novel after she's with Jing.

I would call this pairing beautifully ill-fated, as YZ even said that CX had a chance at the very start, but circumstances make it that them being endgame would never have been a possibility, except in an alternative universe where their family members survived.

Let's look at another scenario: XY and CX as a couple, end up together while he is the powerful emporer. It couldn't be a pure, simple, and delightful love anymore. Here come the responsibilities that you have to fulfill as the Emporer and Empress. You could see it very well in " The Legend of Xiao Chuo" drama. Love would be secondary. You might still consider it a beautiful enhancement of love that strengthens their relationship. 

To me in LYF, the end message is to give XY the power to choose which one of these troubled love stories gives a push to shine. After the wedding with FL crushed she gave Jing the chance. It is very obvious that all the three lovers had the potential to be the one. Honestly, I would be delighted with any of them to be the one.
