Abandoned by his mother as a child, Fujishima Haru, a mentally challenged man, works as a baker at Sakurai Bakery alongside the owner, Sakurai Kyoko, and Tashiro Miki, another mentally challenged girl who is like a sister to him. After work, they attend a night class for mentally challenged adults, taught by Toya Erina, who is both their teacher and friend. When Erina’s old friend Kobayashi Rumiko presents a research project to increase intelligence in the mentally challenged, Erina hesitates but eventually agrees, moved by Haru’s desire to become smarter to win back his mother. After successful surgery, Haru’s intelligence grows, but he struggles with the emotional and social challenges that come with his newfound awareness. This is the older version of Flowers for Algernon. Yusuke got rave reviews for his acting in this one and you will understand why. The drama is a serious one and has many stories within stories including a bittersweet love story, child abandonment, and living with a mental disability. This was not something I wished to watch, however, after one episode I was hooked. The characters are so lovable, well, some of them. You are instantly drawn into the story when you see there is a reversal of fortune: mentally disabled Haru is getting an operation to make him intelligent. The consequences lead to many new circumstances and insights for Haru. While life is full of pathos for those touched by Haru, it makes for a unique and uplifting story.
