Psychological Warfare Wrapped in Crime Fiction’s Finest Silk
This drama came at me like a slow-burn crime thriller with its finger on a psychological trigger—and despite walking in blind, it pulled me in with surgical precision. I hadn’t read The Silent Reading, skipped the 2023 release, dodged fan theories like landmines. Just me, the short MDL synopsis, and Zhang Xin Cheng’s face staring back like it knew my brain was about to be turned into a moral Rubik’s Cube. I expected moody vibes, vague plotlines, maybe a queer-coded bromance dusted with plausible deniability. Instead, I got the kind of storytelling that grips your chest and whispers, “You’re not getting out of this sane.”The first three cases weren’t exactly diabolical. I pegged the culprits early on—suspiciously easy—but that didn’t kill the tension. In fact, it sharpened it. The show wasn’t playing for shock value; it was slow-dripping psychological decay. Each case framed guilt less as an act and more as a symptom—of trauma, of pressure, of a broken system. Watching Pei Su move through each unraveling was like peeling back the skin of human behavior layer by raw, bloody layer. He didn’t solve crimes; he dissected them. And when cases four and five hit? My ego got taken out back and got shot. Since episode 8 or 9, I was convinced Pei Su’s mentor—the one hiding behind the shadows—was the Janitor. The signs were textbook. But the story zagged instead of zigged, and it was glorious. That rare moment when a drama outsmarts you without cheating? Chef’s kiss.
Zhang Xin Cheng doesn’t just play Pei Su—he IS Pei Su. The man radiates control, damage, and repressed anguish so tightly wound you’re afraid blinking might break him. His performance doesn’t ask for sympathy—it commands understanding. And Fu Xin Bo’s Wei Zhao is the perfect foil: calm, grounded, quietly loyal. Their dynamic walks the tightrope between emotional intimacy and unresolved tension, but the show doesn’t queerbait—it lets their bond simmer in the ambiguity of shared pain. What blossoms isn’t romance, but a kind of moral codependency forged in fire. And the result is compelling as hell.
But even masterpieces have cracks. Let’s talk loopholes—because this drama expects a lot from your suspension of disbelief. Pei Su, initially not part of the official task force, strolls in and out of crime scenes like he’s got diplomatic immunity. The rest of the team breaks protocol like it’s a group hobby—no reprimands, just moody lighting and ominous music. And the bomb scene? Peak absurdity. A live explosive, no bomb squad, just Wei Zhao casually defusing death while everyone else stands around like they're waiting for fireworks. Add to that the team’s baffling tendency to abandon suspicion the moment someone looks mildly pitiful, and the cracks start to widen. Oh, and remember that burning question Wei Zhao asked Pei Su? Yeah. Never answered. Just... ignored. Narrative silence where catharsis should have been.
Then came the ending—the soft dismount after a track paved with tragedy cues. Everything about the finale screamed sacrifice: the tone, the symbolism, the emotional escalation. The show wanted you to believe Pei Su wouldn’t make it. And honestly, that would’ve been the narratively consistent choice. Not because I crave death, but because the story had earned it. But instead of catharsis, we got a hesitant pivot into safe territory. A finale that blinked when it should’ve stared us down. That kind of emotional bait-and-switch doesn’t just miss the mark—it undermines the entire arc. I didn’t need blood. I needed resolution that meant something.
And yet, somehow—it’s still perfect. Not in the flawless, pristine sense. Perfect in the way only something raw, jagged, and emotionally loaded can be. Justice in the Dark doesn’t hand out answers. It weaponizes them. It challenges your empathy, your judgment, your belief in redemption. It lingers in your chest like a moral hangover. No, the logic isn’t always airtight. Yes, the climax fumbled the ball. But the ambition? The performances? The sheer emotional weight? Unmatched. It didn’t just sneak into my top 10—it carved its place there with blood, guilt, and a very quiet, very devastating scream. If you can stomach the mess, the brilliance is undeniable.

A Masterpiece Of Acting and Emotions
Now that this show is airing again, I've finally give it a try and I'm shocked that this didn't get as much attention back when it first aired because this is easily one of the top tier bl (or bromance because of censorship) I've seen till date. For me, this had the same effect as The Untamed, that is, I'm forced to read the novel because I just can't have enough.Plot: the plot is taken from Priest's Silent Reading/Modu but there have been some changes (some plot points, names for some reason, era which the story is set in, etc). If you're not read the books, you'll enjoy the plot. We have investigations, solving crimes and understanding human psychology, all of which is handled quite well in my opinion.
Acting: this here is the highlight of the show. Even though its censored, the actors are so good you can tell how much love is between Pei Su Lou Weizhao. Zhang Xicheng has went above and beyond when portraying Pei Su and now that I'm reading the book, I've realized that he has given full justice to the character. Really, I have nothing but praise for all actors.
Music: fits the atmosphere perfectly, and even elevates a lot of scenes. Its not the kind that I'm listening to it outside of the series but still something I loved.
Production: quite good, though the use of CG at certain places is weird but its short enough that you can easily miss. Overall the ambience is amazing, the flow of story is easy to follow and every scene blends seamlessly into another.
I can't recommend this series enough, its been a while since I've been this invested in a series (since mdz actually). Give it a try, even though its censored. Sure there aren't kiss scenes, but you can see the romance and tension between them.

best series ever
Strong story, great lighting, great soundtrack, great acting, beautiful costume design! This series is complete and I'm just sad that no one is doing anything to save this series! This series has international fans and we like to see all the episodes of this series! The chemistry between two male actors is more than all the chemistry between men and women in romantic series! It has very interesting crime stories to tell... I really need to watch this series in its entirety and even review it several timesWas this review helpful to you?

Almost perfect
I loved it, but not for the reasons I expected. It's a very good well written drama, I think the source material have to be a magnificent piece of art to have an adaptation like this.
Acting, story, chemistry, everything was great I just needed a few things for it to be the perfect drama.
I know it's adapted from a BL novel and this is a completely censored adaptation which is the main reason why I felt it needed some romance in it to make it more enjoyable, and I seriously don't care about it being a BL or normal romance it just lacked this touch.
The second reason I needed romance was we get too deep with the characters, we dissect their personality to layers and put each one under a magnifying glass and know more and more about them, Yet, we didn't address their emotions and feelings for eachother.
Another thing that slightly confused me having too many characters, with more than one case -very old and new cases - I get confused then slightly bored and lost, but the thing that kept me going was the two leads and how they interact and try to solve crimes together.
So it lacks a bit of order and some romance to tie things up beautifully but other than that it's a very enjoyable crime drama ~

Some of the BEST time of my life was spent watching these two cuties spar verbally
This review is more or less entirely influenced by the fact that I love Self- sacrificial, Sassy, Hot people and Pei Su hits the mark like an olympic archer. All actors were perfectly casted, emotions were depicted so clearly it felt like i had stuffed onions in my eyes. I may be a sad , cry baby but some scenes were truly gut wrenching. I even stopped to cry and appreciate the acting at some points.
I've seen and loved Steven Zhang and his works in the past but this one TOPS.
literally GOATED!!

What I thought of the series: I started watching this series when it was released. I was hooked right away and thought 8 episodes were too few and hoped there would be a season 2. I didn't know they had canceled the series. So when I saw that there had been so many new episodes, I was surprised. It has taken me a while to watch all the episodes and I still like the series very much. So I'm glad I continued watching the series. You can find more of my reviews on Instagram. :D See my homepage about my Instagram account. Some of my reviews are under five hundred words so I can't post them here. (*^▽^)/★*☆♪(*^-゜)vThanks!

This is the most wonderful TV drama that I have ever watched.
This drama was created by the director, producers, actors and other staff members with their full dedication. The story really attracts me. The acting of each actor is excellent. The OST is very pleasant to listen to.
Although it was not broadcasted in the Chinese mainland, it is still worth watching. It is truly wonderful and the storyline is very exciting.

Interesting but lacking big time
Sadly was highly disappointed at the lack of chemistry and bromance. The mystery part is great, but the lack of screen time with the two of them is horrible. So disappointed but then again not surprised since its bromance and not BL the way it should be like the book. I have two say I have seen better bromance, don't know how anyone gave this 10 stars its a lie. The storyline can be interesting at times, but it does drag on for to long, the banter is fun and the cast of actors look spot on, but the lack of true bromance chemistry is horrible. The down part is this is suppose to be a BL like the book did amazing, but to take of the BL was horrible. The bromance is even more bare with little chemistry with the actors time together. The cases are fun for each episode, the music is lovely, but as for holding a candle to the book its horrible. Its just another sherlock type of story nothing even much on bromance it was more like friends which is boring. Very disappointed. Was this review helpful to you?
Not for me but might be great for others
There's nothing excessively bad about the series but eight episodes in, and it's still quite bland for me personally. This sort of reminds me of CSI Miami where everything is overly exaggerated and everyone is too cool for the show. This type of show may have worked better a decade ago before an overabundance of true crime shows surfaced.-- The crimes beneath the overarching main conspiracy crime are somewhat decent but they also spoon-feed you the clues from the overacting, music, etc.
-- The few actions scenes so far were done well on its own but it doesn't fit the characters. The two mains are supposed to be a standard seasoned cop and a wealthy kid but their fighting skills are apparently on the level of 007.
-- The main MLs also really don't have much chemistry with one another and their relationship feels forced and awkward (even when you don't take into account how they met when one was just a kid).
Overall, it's one of those shows that I wouldn't have a problem with continuing but there's really nothing intriguing enough. My taste in crime series also lean heavy toward more realism. I think if they actually made this more futuristic/sci-fi (almost nothing is " sci-fi-esque" per the description other than the existence of apaths) and significantly picked up the pacing, it would have been a much easier watch.

WHERE IT BEGAN IS WHERE IT ENDS
Despite the debate about whether it's boy romance, brotherly-hood, or cutscene problem (no offence), this series has really a good plot, enough to make you curious and wait for the next episode or even waiting until 2 whole years (2023-2025) and reading the novel back and forth. Based on synopsys, this series focuses on Luo Wenzhou, a captain of the special investigation department of Xinzhou city, solving cases that come continuously with the assistance of Pei Su, an eccentric President Pei Group who somehow manages to be involved in each and every single one of them.Like what is say in The novel synopsis - novel priest (Mo Du), sources this series - which tells you about human nature and struggles, about life and trauma and how sometimes if you whisper help, someone would walk through fire to pull you out of the abyss, this series portrays most accurately what the novel can't show like racing cars, fighting scene, bombing car or building, and actor expression when explaining his trauma (PS), experience and other emotions. Even though so many scenes don't make sense because of cutting or censorship (which is why I don't know the reason) you can fill it with reading the novel, and you will feel complete (if you have time and are too curious about the story).
This show is about finding justice and fair trial and that desperation can either bring the best or the worst out of people. The cases from three generations were being dug out to be resolved which is related to criminals with DNA defects -zero empathy-. As the principle SID -Justice will never lose its glory in darkness- and the credibility of the investigation office can be restored, thanks to team 6 members. There are 3 parties involved here. the first one is SID which join force with PS, the second is the organizations that selters many wanted criminals, PS father is one of the former member (money bank) of this organizations and he call this group is ‘his sword’ to smoothened his business path and the last is the reciter/cleaner/janitor with hatred and resentment left because of their love on are murdered or violated by those group, the latest episode shows that PS father join this force, betrayed the organizations.
All of the actor can pull out the characters in the book really well, such as how mischievous, righteous and clever LWZ as captain of special investigation dept, and how complicated character PS has because of how he raised, how environmental change his character and how he struggles with the past and his DNA. Even the actor who acts as a criminal can make me feel like a creep.
Even until now, I like to rewatch this series, and hoping the official subtitles team will broadcast this series cause it's a pity if people who like to watch the thriller-adrenalin induction-suspense scene and physiology theory with all modern setting for police (tool to access investigation, compared to other suspense criminal c-drama) and setting place that is complement with story, to not watch this series. Or maybe BL fans who like some storyline like this will like it. The relationship dynamic between leads is great, they uncover secrets and overcome trauma through solving cases together.
If this series can be as famous as TU to worldwide that means whatever they (cast and team) went through will pay off. So, don't be discouraged when you read bad comments about this series (for you who like this kind of genre and not mind for BL/bromance contents, because in my opinion, for this kind of series, need strong character and it seems to suit well if both lead are male, sometimes female characters will be revealing to much emotions, and personally make me kinda bored and annoyed), So, go watch this, and make sure to give your score to each episode.
In a nutshell, this series is 10/10 for me.
