The Imperial Astronomer, Kuai Duo, was investigating an unusual activity in his dig when he and his assistant were attacked. When the Marquis returned to the Capital, Kuai Duo's party were not among them. The Princess of Dongxia caused the Marquis's second son's carriage to topple over. Zhinu and Gousheng rescued him, only to tie him up for questioning. Zhinu's mother eventually discovered him and returned him to his family. That night, Kuai Duo returned to his family home and urged them all to pack up so they could leave that very night, but it was too late. (Source: Italophilia at kisskh)

A start of a gripping tale

It was so heartbreaking to watch Zang Hai's whole family and close friends die at the hands of the ruthless Duke Ping Jin.
I'm happy to see Michelle Chen again in a historical drama, although it's a guest role. I've liked her since the 'The Romance of Condor Heroes' and 'The Legend of Qin' era. The child actors and actresses did very well despite their tender ages, too.

Perfect prolog of the year

The execution of the plot is very perfect. Except for Xiao Zhan who does not appear in the first episode, every character is portrayed very well. The camera angles and plot dynamics are very fitting, the background music fits beautifully. Truly a good combination of actors and an extraordinary production crew. It's like watching a full movie in just one episode.

Immediately gripping and intriguing

The direction of this show is truly incredible. The first episode, despite having a young boy as the lead, works amazingly.I do dislike all the stories that begin with narration and exposition, but at least it's short in this one.The way the story begins is quite riveting and lays a great foundation for the character dynamics. We learn quickly the type of person Kuin Dao is from the way he protects his subordinate and takes the lead. The prosthetics did give me pause and, well, they're not at all the best. I did wonder where the budget was going to go with such obvious prosthetics. Thankfully, the ghost warriors are a snippet of the episode and we don't have to be thrown off by their makeup all the time.Otherwise, this episode packed a punch, broke my heart, made me gasp, cry and connect with the characters, even the ones with such small roles as the boy who takes his friend's place. Oh! Pure and agonizing heartbreak. We understand how ruthless the opposition is and can understand, even empathize with the revenge plot.

Legendary Xiao Zhan 🔥

A flawless opening. From the haunting atmosphere to the first sword unsheathed, Episode 1 sets the tone for something epic. Xiao Zhan’s entrance is magnetic — silent, intense, and full of mystery. The pacing is tight, the cinematography cinematic, and every line feels loaded with deeper meaning. You can feel that this isn't just a revenge story — it’s the beginning of a legend.

A journey starts with tragedy

This drama starts out with a bang... Now that I am over a third of the episodes I can say, up to now this is the most gruesome so far, but it's necessary to understand where ZangHai Is coming from. Also, the child actors are wonderful.

The adventure that began with Zang Hai's pain

The first episode started off very excitingly. I think the story is good and if Xiao Zhan is acting in the drama, I'm sure I'll watch something great. I was very sad when Zang Hai watched his family's destruction in front of his eyes. The last scene ended in suspense

Five Stars

Amazing start for a series. It manages to immediately get you attached to every character jut to latest be destroyed by the tragedy that befalls them. It's so rare to find stories written so well they make you get attached to the mc's lost family from ep 1. I could not stop crying throughout the entire time it was happening. Gotta give props to the cast too. Amazing selection of actors. From the children to the adults they all were fantastic. The resemblance to the older actors is also no joke lmao. The casting director truly wasn't playing...

What an Intense 1st Episode

Episode 1 of Legend of Zanghai Zhuan opens with a haunting and emotionally charged introduction to the world that Zanghai will eventually inherit—a world of legacy, bloodshed, and ancient secrets. The episode focuses on Zanghai's parents and early childhood, setting the stage for the larger conflict unfolding. The tone is immediately dark and foreboding, as the narrative plunges viewers into the grandeur and vulnerability of the Zanghai family. The cinematography is stunning—moody lighting, symbolic imagery, and sweeping shots of ancestral grounds evoke a sense of both mysticism and impending doom. The massacre of the Zanghai family is portrayed with powerful emotional weight, not through excessive gore, but through careful pacing, facial expressions, and chilling silence. The actors portraying Zanghai’s parents (Wallace Chung and Michelle Chen) deliver heartfelt performances, especially during their final moments, capturing the desperation of protecting their lineage. The musical score heightens this emotional intensity, pairing eerie silence with mournful melodies that underscore the gravity of loss. The pacing is swift but meaningful, each scene driving the story forward while teasing viewers with layers of history and unanswered questions. Episode 1 is both cinematic and emotionally gripping, drawing viewers into a tragic legacy and preparing them for the emergence of the grown Zanghai in the episodes to come.

Five Stars

The start of Zanghai's revenge. Wait for Zang Hai to grow up and kill all the enemies. There are many suspicious points waiting for the audience to find answers in the next episodes.

Massacre

It starts with showing workers in a mine. Dongxia has been conquered and Great Yong has built Fengshan Altar to declare victory across the land. Under ground the man in charge said they had dug far enough and the men could stop. He was called by a report that something was wrong in the mine. He investigated to find that all the men were knocked out by something. He saw a tunnel leading further and went to investigate. The structure looked like it was upside down and had what appeared to be a jade carving inside. He and another were attacked by the undead. He was reaching for the carving when it cut to a different scene. A young boy is waiting for his father to get home with the royal procession. He found the princess instead and got whipped for his nosiness. He received a sword shaped welt across his back. There was another boy in the procession that was dumped out of carriage in an accident. The boy and two friends hid the boy and beat him trying to get information. When the two older boys left the one seeking his father shared some treats his mother made. The sister discovered the captured boy and told mom. All the boys were then punished. Her son wasn’t happy because all the tunnels he had built to impress his father had to be sealed. There was gossip that all the men in the mine perished when the alter collapsed. The boy denied this because he knew how good a builder his father was. Later that night his father showed up and was trying to get all of family out of the city. He would not explain why and was stopped by guards who started killing people. The leader was accusing the dad of taking something that didn’t belong to him. The mom had son and daughter hide. The boy took his sister to the barn and hid her while he returned to his tunnels getting rid of the seals he had just put in. The soldiers ended up killing them all but the boy. His close friend pretended to be him so the attackers thought they had killed both his children. He watched as his family was slaughtered. His father at the end said they would never find what they were looking for. With his last breath he told his son to live. They staged a robbery and then set everything on fire. The leader finds something in the dad’s pocket and keeps it. The boy had passed out from the smoke but was found by someone who knew to look for him. The mystery man takes the child and exits. A very eventful first episode.

Impression after first 4 episodes:

"Stay Alive." These two words are about to throw us into an epic revenge plot, and I am sooo seated. Also, imma need that revenge to hurt, like super hurt to the point even their ancestors' goat would get theirs, cuz what the hell was that angsty sad fest of a first episode?

Listen, you need to watch this, cuz in only five episodes, the main character went from being a young master, to an orphan, to a disciple, to mastering geomancy, to a feng shui master, to a scholar and to assistance supervisor of the imperial astronomical bureau. At one point he was even a dream interpreter, dude said the ghost of the dowager came to him on his afternoon nap. LOL. Oh, and he also dabbled in kidnapping as a kid, though he fed his prisoner sweets so that don't really count. Like the man is an overachiever to the point, he even said yes to the job/honor of being buried with a dead queen. I can't wait to see just how far he'd rise on the ladder of power on his way for revenge.

Zang Hai is smart and cunning, and I so love that in a character. Fam, dude was like, when I get bored while patiently waiting for my revenge, I count the bricks in this compound, the roof tiles, and the dead bodies of my father's household. Fam, that Marquis is about to rue the day he was born and I am so seated. Fool just invited him to work for him, can't wait for Zhan Hai to destroy him from the inside, it's gonna be sweet.

First off, was I the only one who in ep1 was going, 'dude, don't touch the green glowing box thingy,' but what does Zang Hai's father do? Immediately touches it and gets his whole household slaughtered like cattle. My mouth was opened when his little sister hit the ground. I was so sad until I saw Xiao Zhan's back in episode 2. Though, what the hell was that glowing green box thing? Who were those people in that underground place? Zombies? Like some experiment gone wrong? Ancient magic? Why does that plastic spoon Marquis want it? Why did Zang Hai's father watched his entire household die for it? Ahhh, I can't wait to find out.

Also, I would have immediately died in that tomb in episode 3. Zang Hai was out there going 'Speaking some fancy poems riddles and going move southwest to the fourth tile.' Where? Whomst? I can't even tell my left from my right on a good day, dafug am I to know where northeast is?'

First impression after first 4 episodes:
Plot wise, this is amazing. I love revenge plots and this is shaping out to be amazing. Zang Hai isn't martially strong so he'd have to rely on his smarts and that always makes for an interesting story. I felt his pain in the first two episodes when he lost everything and had to rely on strangers to give him the revenge he wanted and to seek justice for his entire family. Acting wise, everyone is doing great, and as always Xiao Zhan brings his A game to every project. The pacing is also good, and I like how we got to his him grow from a child to an adult.

Characters:
So far, I like those I'm suppose to, and hate those I am supposed to, so everyone is doing a good job. The main character Zang Hai is super clever which I love. Dude is fast with his thinking, good at playing dumb so the enemy undermines him. Like he's out there playing chess while everyone else play checkers, but they all think he's some bumpkin carpenter who he thinks he's smart enough for them. Though, this dude said he'd stay away from matters of the heart, only to immediately give his only seven silvers to a beauty who immediately betrayed him and almost got him killed. Dude, if you let love ruin this revenge for us, imma sue. Like, it's on sight!

His two masters are also great, teaching him all he needs and keeping him on his toes. Personally, I don't trust anyone on this show except Zang Hai ,cuz who is that dude who showed up in the mask? Where is he wearing it? What's he hiding? Who really are his two masters? Can anyone be trusted? That palace seemed like the most dangerous place on the planet cuz everyone seems to be wanting something, and people lives don't really matter to them. The power balance here feels so dangerous, so both my fingers and toes are crossed. Zang Hai better not die before he get's his revenge, or imma set fire to the ocean.

What I am looking forward to:
- Zang Hai making more clever decisions/ outsmarting everyone around him.
- Finding out what the hell that box his father took from the underground tomb was.
- Who is that benefactor in the mask?
- Lowkey here for the romance bit too ^^
- How high is Zang Hai gonna rise to power?
- That Marquis dying painfully on a Tuesday
- Palace schemings
- Sweet sweet revenge.

All-in-all, amazing first four episodes, I can't wait to see how everything turns out. I am seated to see how cunning everyone is gonna get in the next 36 episodes, and how bloody it's all gonna turn out.

The production of this drama is very detailed…

The production of this drama is very detailed oriented, grand and expensive. It is heartbreaking to see the family of Zang Hai being murdered in episode 1. Zang Hai is the only one survive and was saved by one of his father's friend ( mysterious man with a mask). I wanted to see how Zang Hai will revenge the death of his family.

Brutal, magnificent start of a drama!

!SPOILER ALERT!
The first episode hits hard right from the start, serving up a masterclass in emotional storytelling and cinematic flair. Let’s just say, if you’re not bawling your eyes out by the end of this ep, you might want to check your pulse . The plot dives straight into the tragic backstory of Zang Hai (aka Zhinu), a young boy who witnesses the brutal massacre of his family, an event that’s as heart-wrenching as it is gripping. 😭 The writers don’t hold back, making you care deeply about his parents and sister and clansmen before tearing them away, which is both cruel and genius storytelling.
Production-wise, this episode was a feast for the eyes. The moody lighting and hauntingly beautiful sets give it that epic historical drama vibe, but with a dark, almost mystical edge. The massacre scene was chillingly effective. It uses silence mix with facial expressions, and a haunting OST to punch you in the feels. The music score is chef’s kiss, eerie silences melt into mournful melodies that perfectly underscore the tragedy.
A huge shoutout to the child actors, who absolutely nailed their roles. The young Zhinu’s raw portrayal of grief and defiance had me glued to the screen, and the chemistry with his family made their loss hit even harder. Plus, the episode throws in some intriguing supernatural elements (connected with some lore of the novel The Lost Tomb) that tease a larger, darker conspiracy lurking beneath the revenge plot.
The episode sets the foundation for Zang Hai's vengeful rise with precision. If this premiere is any indication, we’re in for a wild ride of political intrigue, jaw-dropping twists, and intense, emotional charged performances.
In short: Ep 1 was a knockout. Bring your tissues on, brace for heartbreak, and prepare to be hooked. Absolute banger! 🔥

A Great Start!

I have to say, it drew me in from the very beginning of the episode! I was so satisfied after finishing the first episode! I originally started the drama for Xiao Zhan. But the beginning is such that I am now watching the drama like crazy!

Revenge is Needed

This episode started off great - especially the slight supernatural element to have you interested. I have my own thoughts of what that ghost army might be about - PingJing might want the artifact because it can control the dead so he could have an army to overthrow the emperor (just a guess though). The massacre of Zang Hai's family and friends was completely cruel - especially the deaths of the children. I can completely understand why he wants revenge. I hope Zang Hai slowly tortures him and takes everything from him - one by one.

effective opening

simple and clear, exactly an opening a revenge plot needs. The tragedy is clearly and vividly showcased, the usual Cdrama troupe of showcasing a lot of the cast in ep1 itself still exists, still since a lot of them wont seen again it cleared up the load :P

Poor my little zhinu

I can't with this ep😭😭 So sad for my little Zhinu for witnessing how his whole family got killed in one night yet he can't do anything. Zhinu meimei😭 poor baby. And i feel so bad for the little boy who admit that he's the real son (Zhinu). So they will not come and find the real zhinu. That's was a good idea during that moment yet he have to pay such a big price (his life). Such a good family 😭😭I going to hate that arrogant little princess or whatever. The little actor act as zhinu was so good.I wish i can see more scene about zhinu parents.
