Li Si, ah Li Si...
Li Si, ah Li Si, you've just joined Li Lianghua and Bai Tou in the list of sneaky, exasperating, heart-breaking geniuses I want to alternately strangle and protect!Just completed watching Shadow Punisher. I'm happy to say that the momentum of the beginning carried through till the end for a satisfying if bittersweet ending.
This drama had so many things that appealed to me - a wonderful team of heroes, each with their unique strengths; genuine friendship and teamwork; interesting cases and great pacing.
I especially loved the fact that while the stakes kept on rising, building up the tension, it was done in a genuinely logical and organic way. there was no 'suffering for the sake of suffering'.
The tragedies (and there were so many, all heartbreaking) all had their due causes and effects and never felt cheap or gratuitous. the final (bittersweet) ending was both logical and earned.
Most importantly, the drama allows you to truly feel the relentlessly cold-blooded and calculative nature of statecraft and espionage, the tragedy of war and the grim realities of conquest that simmer and fester over decades without diluting it with a last minute 'happy ending' montage. Kudos to the director and writers.
On a lighter note, I've become a fan of Luo Yun Xi. And the Li Si-Meng Rui bromance. I'm probably going to end up watching Whispers of Fate for these two.
