If you don’t have power and influence, you are literally nothing
This is an interesting story, but not in a good way, but I’ll get to that.It takes place in the Qing Dynasty and revolves around our male lead Gu Pingyuan who goes to the capital to take part in the imperial exam but is tricked into thinking his mother is ill and he causes a scene and gets exiled for 10 years in the harshest of lands where he is surrounded by evildoers but uses his wit and intellect to stay alive. He finds love but has to separateand escapes the hell hole and is reunited with his family. He then goes into various different businesses and is constantly challenged by the establishment but manages to thwart their plans at every turn making several enemies.. though these people including his father, ms Su, various officials and royalty all plan his demise and death he always manages to find a way out. The story finishes with him going back to his wife and them living a peaceful life, even though he is declared officially dead..
The problem with this story is too many to list, but the point I will make is that it is supposed to be about Aspiration. The show uses Gu Pingyuan as a highly idealised aspirational figure. The issue I have with this is that it makes it very clear that the average Joe literally has no chance to succeed. The fact that only a person of Gu Pingyuan's extraordinary caliber can survive and effect change highlights just how flawed and brutal that society was.
They also try and show us this is about Nationalism/Patriotism: The core message emphasises that qualities like intelligence, resilience, and integrity, when dedicated to the good of the nation, lead to ultimate triumph and national salvation. This suggests that extraordinary individuals are needed to correct systemic injustice, and shows the average person is disposable.
But in my opinion, all this show does is reinforce Hierarchies. The status quo. Influence matters above all else, and the system is so brutal that typical hard work won't save you. My perspective views the show as subtly discouraging mass dissent and encouraging reliance on exceptional, virtuous leaders.
So while the show aims for a message of "virtue triumphs," the mechanics of how it gets there (requiring the ML to be essentially a genius superhero with incredible luck) inadvertently support the reasoning that the average person doesn't stand a chance.
It’s clearly Chinese state propaganda and this stems from this contrast between an individual's struggle and the state's message of strong, morally sound leadership being necessary to overcome challenges.
My final thought is I also hated the fact that every time somebody did something to the ML not only did he forgive them but he somehow found a way to reward them for their despicable actions by either becoming allies and cooperating with them in business or allowing their business to flourish successfully .
The whole thing is just stupid.

There is a good balance in the story that never loses steam despite the breadth of the story and the number of characters we get to know through these forty episodes. The story is slow and character focused even if the pacing is often quite sharp. Occasionally too sharp so that certain moments or predicaments are over too quickly or issues solved a little too easily. Especially in the first half.
However, the drama never really forgets itself; there isn’t too much go on within the story at the same time, and it never loses focus on the main narrative. Which means that the play always carries a certain emotional depth within itself no matter what happens.
Although it seems that some scenes have been shortened, possibly to prevent the drama from being too long, it doesn’t halt or hurt the story. And even if I would have liked a deeper explanation of some incidents or for some moments to linger a bit longer, the drama manages to deliver everything quite neatly, through some rugged landscapes and all the political maneuverings that await our characters, thanks to the good structure of the story.
Approximately every ten episodes, the drama shifts gears, introducing new people, plotlines and stakes to up the tension slightly. These changes in the story occur in a coordinated way, with the past actions changing the characters’ lives in some way and driving the changes forward within the narrative.
While certain plot points within this long story that lead us through the late and somewhat crumbling Qing Dynasty are not all equally exciting, each of them contributes to the story’s progression, deepens and develops the character, and the story flows rather effortlessly from one part of the story to another.
As I have mentioned before, Gu Pingyuan’s victories can at times feel too easy even though the story does a good job of making him deserved just so the story can move on. However, the drama manages to retain a certain down-to-earth composure and a certain sense of reality, and this helps with how well set up and tangible these characters seem, making them alive within the narrative and making it easy for the audience to connect with them. These characters grow and refuse to give up no matter what obstacles are placed in front of them, and it is marvelous to watch.
All friendships, rivalries, family ties, as well as romance are certainly given their moments and are portrayed with a lot of nuance and complexity that makes even secondary characters tangible and alive.
This story is never trying to be too epic, but rather a down to earth, tangible and complex journey of a man who rises from having no power to great wealth. It’s a deep and human story where resilience, the power of intellect, and the desire to do better for the people around you drive the story forward.
The core and heart of the story lies in the impeccable characterization and complex life of the main character. The drama is clever, funny, sometimes heartbreaking and even brutal at one point, and sometimes all at once. Keeping the viewer’s interest and a very steady narrative through forty episodes is no easy feat which Legend of the Magenta achieves retaliative ease.

A beautifully crafted drama where every character shines
I love the emotional push and pull between Gu Pingyuan and Yu’er, and I’m genuinely moved by the turbulent romance between General Li Cheng and Bai Yimei. Actually, every character leaves a deep impression, each with their own charm, helplessness, and struggles in a turbulent era. Watching them get swept along by the tides of history makes you wonder where ordinary people can go, and how they choose their path when fate offers no easy answers. This drama is truly a standout. In an era dominated by fast-paced short dramas, this series feels carefully polished and full of heart. The performances are strong across the board, the immersion is excellent, and the storyline keeps deepening with every episode.
It gave me a lot to reflect on, and I strongly recommend it. I hope you’ll come to love it as much as I do.
I watch it on Drama Apple's YouTube channel. so glad I find it there. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes!!!

Good drama but some obvious shortcomings
I came away from this show conflicted. On the one hand, the production values and the acting are fabulous. I felt immersed in the world of the later Qing dynasty, with all its quirks. The premise is interesting to me, a scholar exiled to a harsh realm, desperately trying to get back to his hometown so he can make an honest living as a tea farmer, but the corrupt Qing dynasty, some rabid rebels, and various greedy businessmen have other ideas. The show doesn't really fulfill its promise though. Numerous characters become plot devices more than anything else. For example, the mysterious noblewoman Su keeps threatening to have Gu Pingyuan killed, but for some unclear reasons she keeps helping him through some sticky situations. We never really get a resolution for her. The primary antagonist just... kinda... loses interest after his great dark secret is learned. The main character himself becomes... well, a merchant of some sort, I guess, but it's all pretty vague. The dramatic final showdown becomes a couple of secondary characters signing a piece of paper that... I don't know why that piece of paper was so important to them.
You get the picture, I hope. The immersion is entertaining, and there is some dramatic build-up, but the plot peters out at the end. I suppose that's a bit of a rule for late Qing dynasty shows, that you can't really have a clean ending, because the viewer understands everybody in the show is doomed. I am left with an interesting show, but I am not sure what the point was.
So let's give it an 8. The good parts were worth it to me. If you need a story with a compelling ending, then you probably won't be so kind.

Amazing!
What a gem this drama was. 40 episodes and no boredom is rare for me. If it's longer than 16 episodes my focus starts to wander. This is a magnificent drama from the wonderful cast choices to the intriguing storyline. The acting was superb which is why I was so engaged with this drama from episode 1.
I've never seen the ML before but man, can he act. I love the FL. I encourage you to watch it and give it a try

What's the Story???
Okay, there is a story. Stuff happened. I actually kept up with it when it aired. I'm now writing a review after...well, my third watch lol. There was just too much I kept wanting to hold onto and rewatch but then there was also not enough (or maybe too much?) that I also just disliked. Felt like it could have been more in depth but it really only touched surface on some events/characters. Felt like it was trying to be a little bit of every genre that it couldn't go into depth with one (well, it did actually lol...but). I mean, I enjoy it and will rewatch my favorite parts, but as a whole and to the ending, it just wasn't as satifying. Sucks because I actually enjoyed the cast and they actually had a good cast too (so much that I wanted ML to actually just be with the supporting FLs, yes plural - how much I like them and have seen some of their works). It was like a romance type vibe but also not lol, great acting, more of a different writing or story that I like the gradually it becomes for me. At the end of the day, I feel like the value just dimished. Good one time watch though. Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent Series to watch for authentic periodic dramas... satisfying to watch
Till now this series didn't disappoint me I am at 19th episode... every episode is meaningful and all the new characters are well narrated and well introduced and has excellent production value from costumes, the periodic sets and the makeup which are really authentic. The production values are very rich like the tea grinding and making set, which I think is true to how they used to make tea in ancient times. Every character is well cast and well acted and their performances are top notch like the character Wang Tiangui a crocked banker. I couldn't praise this series more and this comes from me who has watched more that 80 plus wuxia and Xianxia dramas. It is in par with Story of Yanxi palace and Story of Ming Lan to name a few which has female leads and nirvana in fire which are the best in the recent times. Frankly it should have been rated more that the recent Wuxia dramas in 2025. Must watch for fans who love to watch Chinese dramas. Was this review helpful to you?
