It's like a warm hug in drama form

I didn't realize this was a mini-series when I first started it, but once I realized I was a bit skeptical that with only ten twenty-two or so minute episodes, I wouldn't be able to grow that much of an attachment to the characters and stories. Most ten-episode J-Dramas are three times that length after all. Fortunately, that wasn't the case.

I loved every episode of this show, and Himari and Shin's relationship was actually so freaking adorable that I don't even know how to express how much I loved them. I don't know quite how to describe it, but I think this show feels like a warm hug. I wasn't expecting such a comforting drama, but that's what I found. And honestly, I'm not sure it can be classified as a drama, because there isn't much drama in it. Even with the lack of dramatic conflict, I was never bored, the story didn't need petty villains, absurd plot twists, or shockbait to be good, and I loved that.

Himari and Shin were the highlight of the show of course. I loved seeing the steady progression of their relationship from two people married for convenience, to a couple that really love and care for each other. There aren't any second leads to drive them apart or miscommunication to drive us insane, just two loveable weirdo's falling for each other. And once they really are together, they have a shockingly healthy relationship, which isn't always common in dramaland. Himari having to learn to care not only about others, but also for herself, and Shin reinforcing that was an absolute delight to watch.

And while I loved them as a couple, both of their individual characters were interesting in their own rights too. I was glad that Shin wasn't the stoic emotionless male lead, and that Himari wasn't your typical naive female lead, it was a breath of fresh air.
There are a few side characters too, which aid to the plot when necessary, but didn't have much story on their own, I didn't mind that though, it gave us more time with the leads.

Though I think that the short length of the drama overall worked, there were a couple of plot points I think could have been fleshed out a little better if we had been given one or two more episodes. And that's pretty much my only real gripe with the whole thing.

Marry Me! was such a simple drama overall, and was an incredibly comforting watch. I had a stupid smile on my face for pretty much the whole show, which by the way, I finished in like one sitting. I'll probably be back for a rewatch too.

Love Solves Most Ills

This drama introduced me to the concept of NEET: individuals who are not in education, employment, or training. In Japan, this comprises people aged 15-34 who are not employed, not engaged in housework, not enrolled in school or work-related training, and not seeking work. In the drama, a young girl, abandoned by her parents, had taken care of her ailing grandparents and dropped out of school. She was a homebound person through poverty, depression, and lack of emotional support after her grandparents' deaths.

Fictionally, in the drama, the Japanese government started a program to marry NEETs to government employees in order to help them, promote childbirth to alleviate Japan's troublesome declining rates, and help society. This is how the ML, a government employee, ended up married to the FL, a NEET. Their relationship was on paper, but, as often happens in dramaland and in real life, close proximity brings feelings, and life becomes complicated.

The drama was a quiet, sweet affair, and I was pleased to learn something from it.

Heartfelt drama about marriage of convenience

Marry Me! is a warm Jdrama about marriage of convenience.

What I like
1) I watched many Jdrama about marriage of convenience. Expected fluff but I cried in episodes 3 & 4.
2) Rinka Kumada portrayed Himari's sweetness & naivety very well. Himari is childlike because she lacked opportunity to socialise with people her age. However she is not dumb and does not want to be treated with kid gloves.
3) I like that supporting characters play role in enriching Himari's life.
4) I like the male lead Shin. He was empathetic towards Himari. The actor Toshiki Seto resembles D.O & Lee Dong Wook.
5) Slow burn romance - I like how the relationship progressed from strangers who married for convenience, to confidant and true life partners. When Himari told Shin that she was to become dependable so Shin can rely to her more, wow I was touched by the growth of her character.

What I dislike
1) I dislike that the boss prioritise the experimentation more than male lead's welfare. He and Himari should be able to withdraw from the research without being threatened.

Favourite scene
When Himari had a heartfelt conversation with her in laws during their first visit to her house. I cried a lot!

This is so clean for a marriage drama.

Marry Me is a slice of life drama. If you expect over the top romance, this is not for you. It handles realities of; not only marriage but some aspects of life too. Pretty much universal yet heartwarming. The relationship built was indeed pure and a bit formal. But it works for the couple. It was the shape of the couple. I recalled the similar phrase used in Shanai Marriage Honey.

I like every character. No hassle, no overbearing in laws and exes or overdone developments. It is like watching a polite community trying to help each other.

The chemistry was almost robotic due to the screenplay I think. The dynamic was different from Shanai Marriage. Marry Me centres more on the personal developments in accepting yourselves and others rather than romantic relationship between the mains.

I have no issue because it is still a light drama that is safe to be watched on the big screen with your parents.

Short and sweet

A short, beautiful and meaningful story of two selfless people coming together in marriage, and changing each other’s life completely. This drama has the prettiest FL I’ve ever come across in any Japanese drama, I loved watching her and would be searching for more shows of hers. The premise was a federal law being tested on a couple who need to get married, even though they don’t know each other. We see heartwarming relationships, neighbourhood affection, office politics and a sweet romance, all bundles in 10 short episodes.

Twisted female lead! You'll feel like she is a different person lol

I accidentally found this drama, wanted to drop it at the beginning cause of the 'old set' and coloring. But ended up watching it cause the story gets built up in a good way! Yeah, you know just like another j-drama its always doesn't make sense in the beginning but its actually pretty good so far. They ended up in a contract marriage, but i must say THE FEMALE LEAD IS SO CUTE! you'll gonna feel like she is a two different person, when she is sad and not. But, this drama definitely gonna make you smile like an idiot sometimes. Although she is afraid to meet new people, but she's a very warm person especially if he's around. They didn't push it too much too, so the flow is not rushed. If you wanted a warm feeling of story revolves around family and marriage, this is a good one. Both the female and male lead's visual are beautiful!

Sweet story

This was a sweet story about two lonely people becoming family to one another. The actors were good, but maybe it was where I was emotionally when I watched it, but the "passivity" (for lack of a better word) kept me from enjoying it more fully. The extremely quiet FL with her hair in her face, head down, shoulders slumped, that bothered me here. That said, once they got to know each other more, both actors were beautiful to watch.

I especially enjoyed the last episode. Their new family, that included blood relations as well as friends that they'd acquired along the way. It was a lovely ending.

This is a good show to watch if you are in the mood for no angst and a slow, easy story progression.

Fofo

Marry Me!

(Seishun Cinderella/ Brother Trap)
