K-Drama Extremely slow and boring!
I haven't read the original novel, so I don't know if it's the original story or the poor adaptation, but the characters in the plot are extremely disorganized and poorly developed, and this is despite of some very good acting performances. It seems that the entire revenge theme is to explore the power struggles and interpersonal dynamics within the family structure and the social and court hierarchy but the show falls short to deliver this concept. The pace is excruciatingly slow and devoid of any excitement, and the suspenseful music is not enough to remedy the lack of any life and vigor. The main protagonist's ( Xie Qing Yuan) deadpan face, extra soft voice and servile acts soon become annoying and boring. Her character shifts from a very insightful strategist one day to a naively emotional teenager wanting revenge at any cost, even by marrying an immature and single-minded lovestruck fool with no real power, the next! The emotional connection between the main characters is not palpable or believable. I like Zhou Ye and enjoyed her performance in The legend of the female general and looked forward to this drama mostly because of her but unfortunately, this underperforming and utterly disappointing drama managed to wipe out all those good impressions.Was this review helpful to you?
The two leads both give strong performances within the bounds of the script they have to work with but because the story lacks a strong enough structure their characters often feel a bit hollow. Acting from much of the rest of the cast feels cartoonish and unrealistic. Many over act and most emotional scenes lack conviction or believable emotion. From the beginning the drama moves you constantly from dramatic scene to dramatic scene with no small filler moments to allow you to feel connected to the characters, the setting, or the story. It relies heavily on the viewers suspension of belief to keep the story moving.
The female lead is strong, calculative, and calm which makes each of her takedowns for the cartoonish villains feel satisfying but her background has been given little attention and leaves many questions. What happened to her after her mother's death? How has she been able to become so formidable? Did someone help teach her everything because if she was living as a beggar or commoner where did she find the resources to learn about the law or etiquette for a noble house? The male lead is similar. If his family was annihilated when he was a child and he was on the run, how did he end up with his real identity being close to the monarch? He was a young child when everything happened. For the sake of the story and where it began I can overlook the lack of background information but then she enters the Xie household and things make less sense.
Why is everyone always in the hall seated and talking? Most major scenes seem to take place in that hall with just them talking around each other in obtuse ways. In fact, my biggest gripe with this drama is the sheer amount of standing around and talking that is done. Even in scenes that should carry emotional weight such as anger or fear the actors are reduced to having to act from a seat and show no passion or conviction. The way the supporting cast women behave is clearly over the top or suspicious and no one questions anything? The dialogue within the drama does not help with believing this is a family of such high corruption that has been able to get away with it for so long. Any normal person would have singled them out much earlier. Even if the commoners can't fight against the rich and powerful there would have been many other rich families trying to knock this family down just so they could have more power and they would have been very easily toppled with the mentality of the entire household. Extras in this drama are all reduced to just bodies standing around either as voyeurs or bystanders.
There is also instances that don't make sense between the leads. Where he dresses her wounds or she lays beside him in clear view of a lot of other people but no one says anything about the normal boundaries between men and women, especially unmarried ones from powerful houses? The father and brother have been in the Northern Frontier maintaining the border but have no skills or ability to protect their home from bandits and instead send a little girl to search for help? Are there no guards or servants in this huge house? To me the most interesting character is Young Lord Li as the second male lead. His instant interest in her was not portrayed/introduced well but his character and performance are enjoyable to watch and I'll be almost sad to see him get heart broken.
Overall I think that if you have enjoyed many of the recent dramas such as The Glory, Blossoms of Power, Generation to Generation, and Ashes to Crown then I think you will find this drama enjoyable. They focus on beautiful casts and stories that move quickly from one big moment to the next. What they all lack is a certain level of believability to them because they don't take time to build their characters or settings and instead focus on constantly shocking the audience rather than creating stories that will stay with you. I don't find myself emotionally invested because the narrative never gave me time to feel that way.

Interesting Drama
I really love this series, and honestly, I don’t really mind what other reviews say. 😄 It’s a revenge drama, so I went into it expecting the revenge storyline to continue until the very end. That’s what the story is about, and I think it makes sense for the drama to stay true to its theme.Sometimes, a sad, bittersweet, or even frustrating ending/last few episodes can fit the story better and make it more memorable.
Of course, everyone has their own preferences when it comes to dramas. What works for one person might not work for another, and that’s completely okay. For me, though, I enjoyed the series and the way the story unfolded. ❤️

Thank you for releasig this 2026 masterpiece - Xu Kai rocks!!
Brilliant piece of work. Clearly for intelligent audience.Its a mystery and like any good mystery its not all going to be revealed in episode one.
The story unfolds in layers gripping the viewer in the moment and evolving chemistry between the 2 leads.
Another absolute gem of a performance by Xu Kai.
He has always been a brilliant actor but of late, his performances are way above par and clearly outmatched.
The character Shen Run is explosive hot. And Kia plays him brilliantly- all hot and handsome and in control all at the same time - and by jove that's an addictive package.
This one is seriously the kind you’ll rewatch a dozen times.
For all those misinformed comments on how the tragedy and the past is not clear - it’s from the perspective two kids!
They are remembering the traumatic tragedy from their past from a child’s perspective. It’s disjointed and confusing and wrapped in pain and suffering of confused traumatised children as to them it makes no sense.
That’s why they need answers and they need revenge.
Because the tragic events seems pointless.
Rich or poor losing your parent and your entire family for no apparent reason can leave a very heavy burden.
The plot is revealed in bits and pieces. As they come to terms with the reality of what happened and they slowly discover the truth. - ----
MYy quick assessment - qingyuan’s mother was banished from her home under false accusations. She had a child, and was not dead jsut bansihed so always a risk to the entire plot and agency of a false accusation.
Shen run’s father is investigating either the xie family for curruption or quingyuan’s mother’s accusations or both.
He has to leave for further investigation and feels his eldest son is vulnerable and may be targeted so he leaves him with quingyuan’s mother for safekeeping till he returns, as no one would think of looking for his child in a poor single mother’s home.
But forces are at a play to both suppress the investigation on the xie family and to silence qinguan’s mother - two or one factions attack the two families, kills Qingyuan's mum and wipes out ShenRun’s entire clan.
As later revealed - qingyuan’s father killed her mother but blamed it on her getting attacked for harbouring rebels.
Harbouring rebels again points to Shen Run's family being targeted. His father had information or was investigating something related to either of both Xie family or the eldest wife's family Hu - supposedly very close to the emperor.
The curruption in xie family is materminded by a bigger entity - very likely the Hu family of the eldest of First Madam.
Qingyuan's father rose from the ranks - very likely beauce of his marriage to the Hu family daughter, whose father is the kingpin - the marter strategist, running the grain hoarding and blackmarketing scam across the country and qingyuan's father is part of that network by marriage. It seems Hu is the PM?
It is also possible that its the first madam that killed the fifth madam to get rid of both the fifth madam and qingyuan’s mother. Both of who she considered as her competitions.
Point to note - Their chemistry is explosive from the word go. Kai is beyond brilliant. I swear I’ll be watching reruns of just these few episodes everytime each new one is released.
And oh! - - - hold your breath for episodes 4 and 12 and 14 the guy simply burns the screen to smouldering ashes.

Keeping Up with the Xie Family
Someone on TikTok said that Lord Yan walking into the Xie family’s house looked like he was watching his own reality show unfold in real time, like At Home with the Kardashians.A family can be complicated, full of drama and conflicts, with members who can't stand each other because, after all, you don't get to choose the family you're born into, you just end up stuck with them. But the Xie family? Every single member must have done something really terrible in a past life to be born into that family. You probably wouldn't have been bored if you were a servant there; every day brought a new dram and I could understand the male lead every time he couldn't resist watching yet another one unfold. I absolutely loved the moments when he walked into the family's ceremonial hall and watched everything that was happening with the exact same satisfaction as us. It must have been really fun for the actors to film some of those scenes.
I wouldn't recommend choosing this drama if you're looking for an extraordinary romance story. Even though romance is present throughout the story and many of the conflicts stem from the characters' one-sided or mutual love stories, it isn't the central part of the plot and you won't see more than a handful of truly romantic scenes. But sometimes less is more.
This drama is, first and foremost, about betrayal, about the schemes people devise in their pursuit of power. A single action from the past can ripple into dozens of consequences in the future that you could never have foreseen.
It is a story about friendship, alliances, revenge and, ultimately, forgiveness. I liked the female lead’s perspective that “children are not responsible for their parents’ actions” and the way she was simply looking for answers and rightful revenge, while she approached her relationships with her brothers and sisters without any ill intentions. Qingyuan perfectly reflects the behavior of her siblings, and I really enjoyed the relationships between her and her older sister, as well as with her brothers, especially Zhenglun. Zhengjun also had some really good character development.
Almost every character had a story of their own. Even Marquis Li’s heir, although he was very persistent and sometimes annoying (and honestly, if he lived in modern times, the female lead would definitely have told him to back off), was a good character with sincere intentions. There were many characters I really liked. Even the antagonists had very well-developed stories. And all the supporting and guest actors acted VERY WELL.
I really enjoyed watching the relationship between the female lead and the male lead, from their initial bickering to the way they gradually started helping each other, began to appreciate and respect each other more, while still pursuing their own plans at the same time. I was also genuinely interested in the story of their parents.
The characters were quite realistic, with each of them having their own strengths and weaknesses. I noticed that some people complained about the female lead, but I found her to be a believable character. She's intelligent and analytical, but she doesn't have any martial arts skills and that proves to be her weakness A LOT. She started out knowing very little about her case, only what she had seen when she was just a child, but gradually discovered a lot of things with the help of other people (or by analysing the people she interacted with). She made mistakes and learned from them. She also had her doubts about what she did.
Last but not least, there were many plot twists towards the end that I didn't see coming. Even though the last few episodes felt a little rushed and somewhat boring to me, the secrets were revealed at a fast pace and I was very surprised. I didn't notice any loose ends in the story. Everything was wrapped up by the end.
I do have to say, though, that I would have preferred to see more scenes showing what happened behind the scenes and how certain events contributed to the characters' plans. Sometimes, instead of actually showing us what happened, we were simply told about it, or we would reach a certain point and have to figure out for ourselves what steps had taken place without actually seeing them. I couldn't really explain this without giving spoilers, but it was something that irritated me.
Also, lol, the cinematography was beautiful, but there were quite a few scenes that felt repetitive, especially when they kept showing the characters' reactions over and over again, like those Bollywood movie memes where something dramatic happens and you get a close-up of everyone's shocked expression.

Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda!
The story is good. Wasn't expecting the reveal. The usual revenge/avenge and clear my famiy name. A little slow burn romance between the leads which developed fast and delivered fairly well and then, boom, no more romance. The usual first wife and concubines draman and scheming, etc.Actors were good. Always enjoy Xu Kai and ZY's performances (though I must say ZY's best performances, in my opinion, were in Legend of Female General and Return from the Brink). XZX was stellar as ChunZhi! I almost want to say he was my fave!
The problem with this series, in my unprofessional opinion, was the editing and directing. This coulda been an awesome production, but it fell short. It's just all over the place like a wild roller coaster ride! I did enjoy it for the most part (ignoring the bumps along the ride).
Nonetheless, I recommend it, if you can watch with very open mind and ignore the glitches and cut and paste feel of the editing! 😁 I gave it a 5 rewatch value cause I think it can be rewatched in binge mode, like 10 episodes at a time, and the ride might feel less bumpy 🤣

So Much Potential, But… ?
I was REALLY invested from the beginning up to episode 24. The storyline had me hooked, the writing kept me curious, the dialogue was interesting, and there were so many little details that made me feel like I was playing a puzzle game 😂 Every episode had me thinking : Okay… what is REALLY going on?But if there’s one thing I have to give this drama, it’s Xu Kai and Fu Dalong.
These two literally carry the drama for me. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Whenever Shen Run or Xie Shu appears, the whole energy changes. Their characters are so unpredictable and layered. You never really know what they’re going to do next, what they’re hiding, or what happened in their past that made them become like this.
Shen Run is so tactical. He calculates every step, and even when he gets emotional, he’s still thinking and knows exactly what he’s doing. And OMG… his entrances! 😂🔥 I swear, this man has some of the BEST entrances I’ve ever seen in a drama. Every time he walks into a scene, he makes it feel like an event.
And Fu Dalong as Xie Shu — this man was on another level. His facial expressions, his little side smile, his eyes, the way he moves his head, even the way he holds his fan… everything feels intentional. He can look almost harmless or even a little foolish, but you can still feel that he’s calculating everything. That quiet, cunning energy is SO good.
Guest actor?! THIS MAN?! 😭😂🔥
Because Fu Dalong's Xie Shu isn't just some character who appears for a few scenes. He has a huge impact on the story, and every time he appears, the whole atmosphere changes.
Sir, you practically carried half the plot. 😂🔥
So honestly, these two are the reason I stayed so invested in the later episodes. 😂
And I have to give the drama credit for something else:
Best funeral. 😭
Best proposal. 😂❤️
Best wedding. 🔥
Best comeback. 👀🔥
Best rescue. 😭🔥
And the rescue especially! It wasn’t just the fact that Shen Run came to save her. It was the way he did it. The timing, the entrance, the confidence, and the fact that he already seemed to have calculated everything before he even showed up. 😂 You’re watching the scene thinking, “How is he going to get her out of this?” and then he appears and completely changes the situation.
That’s exactly what I love about Shen Run : even when he’s emotional, he’s still thinking several steps ahead.
This drama really knows how to make an entrance, a comeback, a rescue, or a big emotional moment feel like an EVENT.
As for Zhou Ye, unfortunately I couldn't really connect with her acting in this drama. I know she’s a good actress, so I don’t know if it’s the writing, the way the character was directed, or the character itself, but especially when it comes to the emotional scenes, I often felt like I was watching the emotion rather than actually feeling it.
The fake death of Shen Run was probably the biggest example for me. I know it was part of their plan, but they still had to SELL IT HARD enough to make everyone believe it. Even knowing it was fake, I expected Qingyuan to show more shock and grief. Her walk, her gaze, her whole reaction… I just couldn’t feel the pain. 😭
But unfortunately, after episode 25, I started feeling the pacing change. It became slower and sometimes boring, while at the same time some important details felt rushed or missing.
And then the final 5 episodes made that feeling even stronger for me.
I was expecting all the pieces we had been collecting since the beginning to finally come together — the past, the Xie family, Qingyuan’s mother, the Emperor, the relationship between the Emperor and her father, Shen Run’s father, and who was actually pulling the strings behind everything.
Some answers came, but I still felt like we were missing parts of the circle. There were so many things that had been built up for so long, and I wanted more explanation and more connection between them instead of feeling like some things were just quickly wrapped up.
And that’s what frustrated me the most. The drama made me spend so many episodes trying to solve the puzzle, so I wanted the final episodes to give me that “OMG, THAT’S WHY!” feeling.
Instead, sometimes I was like… “Wait, that’s it? 😭 What about this part?”
The final episodes also felt more focused on moving the story toward the ending instead of giving some of the characters and relationships the time they deserved. After everything that happened, I wanted more emotional payoff, especially for the characters we had been following for so long.
So it’s not that I suddenly think the whole drama became bad. I just feel like the last part didn't match the level of curiosity and tension the drama created in the first 24 episodes.
That’s why I keep saying:
It’s a good drama, but it could’ve been GREAT.
It had the story.
It had the characters.
It had the actors.
It had the mystery.
It had some AMAZING moments.
But the execution in the last part made me feel like there were still pieces of the puzzle missing. 😭

*Spring of the Blade* had a lot of potential. The story had strong ingredients: a childhood bond, a long-awaited reunion, revenge, political intrigue, and a male lead who is genuinely intelligent and capable. Unfortunately, I felt that the script did not make the best use of those ingredients, especially in the second half.
**Shen Run (the male lead) was easily my favorite part of the drama.** I would give him around 9/10 as a character. He is smart, observant, and usually thinks several steps ahead. He understands people and political situations very well, and I often enjoyed watching him figure out what was really happening behind the scenes. His aura as the male lead also worked very well for me.
I would even put Shen Run on roughly the same level as **Xiao Huaiyong from *Blossoms of Power***. They are both the type of male leads who feel genuinely competent rather than simply being described by the script as “smart.”
My biggest problem was **Xie Qingyuan, the female lead**. I don't think she is a badly written character from the beginning. In fact, she initially appears intelligent, capable, and determined. However, as the story progresses, her stubbornness and obsession with revenge begin to override the intelligence that the story initially established.
The biggest example is her decision to marry Li Congxin in order to use his family's power for revenge, despite already having feelings for Shen Run. I could understand the strategic motivation, but emotionally and logically, this decision was very difficult for me to accept. It created a lot of unnecessary drama and forced Shen Run to clean up the consequences of choices that he had already warned her about.
Another problem was that the drama did not give Qingyuan enough emotional reflection afterward. **I really wanted to see her feel regret or guilt for the things her choices caused, especially toward Shen Run.** She was shown to love him, but I rarely felt that the drama actually showed *how deeply* she loved him.
For example, once she learned that Yan Rui was actually Shen Run, I expected the story to explore the emotional impact of that revelation much more. The drama had already established that she had been waiting for Shen Run for years. That could have been developed into something incredibly romantic: realizing that the person she had been waiting for all those years had actually returned to her.
Even the jade that Shen Run gave her could have been used much more effectively. After learning its importance, Qingyuan could have reflected on how Shen Run had risked his life protecting her and finally apologized for making him suffer because of her choices. A simple scene of her sincerely saying “I'm sorry” could have added a lot of depth to their relationship.
I also wish the drama had included a scene after their marriage where Shen Run asked her something like:
**“After everything I have done, do you regret marrying me?”**
I would have loved to see Qingyuan's reaction before she answered. That kind of emotional scene would have meant much more to me than simply adding more kissing scenes. The drama had the foundation for a very touching love story, but it often chose plot progression over emotional development.
**The romance was therefore a mixed experience for me.** I believed that Shen Run and Qingyuan loved each other, but I did not always *feel* Qingyuan's love as strongly as I felt Shen Run's love for her. For a couple whose relationship was built around childhood memories, separation, waiting, and reunion, I think the emotional side of their relationship deserved much more attention.
Li Congxin was another issue for me. I understand why the character exists, but I felt that the script pushed his romantic pursuit too far. Compared with Zhao Xiao from *Rebirth for You*, who could also be annoying at times, Li Congxin felt much less natural to me. Zhao Xiao still had manners, boundaries, and common sense in how he expressed his feelings. Li Congxin often felt as if the script was repeatedly telling the audience, “Look how much he loves her,” rather than letting his feelings develop naturally through his behavior.
The **second half also became increasingly scattered**. From around the later episodes, the story divided its attention between Shen Run's political/revenge storyline and Qingyuan's investigation into her family and mother's past. Shen Run remained important, but I felt that the male and female leads should have been working together much more. The drama had a much stronger potential as a husband-and-wife team solving the problems together.
This is especially frustrating because the drama had such a strong male lead. I wanted to see Shen Run and Qingyuan use their abilities together rather than having the narrative separate them for long stretches.
Overall, I don't think *Spring of the Blade* was a bad drama. **It was a drama with good ingredients that were not always assembled into the strongest possible story.** The early and middle parts worked fairly well for me, and Shen Run was an excellent character. But the later pacing, the unnecessary second-lead drama, Qingyuan's questionable revenge decisions, and the lack of emotional reflection from her prevented the drama from reaching its full potential.
**My final ratings:**
* Male Lead — **9/10**
* Female Lead — **5/10**
* Main Couple Romance — **6/10**
* Overall Plot — **6/10**
* Li Congxin — **3/10**
* Overall Drama — **7.5/10**
There was a much better drama hiding inside *Spring of the Blade*. I just wish the script had trusted its strongest ingredients more—especially the childhood bond and the relationship between Shen Run and Qingyuan.

The production is the showpiece. The costumes are rich, the mood is dark and moody, the camera work is lovely, and the soundtrack fits every scene without stealing it. The acting is just as strong. Xu Kai as Shen Run is the reason half the internet is still awake at night, all cold control and sharp patience, then suddenly a man undone by love. Zhou Ye matches him as Qingyuan, and the two of them circling each other in that enemy phase, teasing, testing and out-maneuvering one another, is the best fun in the whole show. Their chemistry carries the drama when the script cannot.
The Xie family deserves its own mention. They are so deliciously terrible that even Shen Run walks into their hall like he bought a ticket to a live show, and you will want to throw a shoe at the screen. The supporting actors played them well enough to make you truly angry, which is a compliment.
Now the honest part. The story was ok, as you said, and the strategies could have been much smarter. Qingyuan starts out sharp and calm, then revenge swallows her good sense, and she keeps needing Shen Run to pull her out of trouble. Her choice to marry Li Congxin for his family power, while already caring for Shen Run, is the plan that made many viewers sigh loudly. Shen Run is brilliant, but his own past is mostly left in shadow. How does a boy from a wiped out family end up standing beside the emperor? The drama shrugs and moves on. Much of the big court politics is explained to us instead of shown, so it feels far away.
The chemistry between the male and female lead is real. You can feel the spark when they share a scene, and the early push and pull between them is the best part of the show. That is why the romance disappointed me so much. With chemistry like that, I wanted warmth, and what I got felt cold and calculating. They felt more like two clever partners in a plan than two hearts who waited for each other. The longing was there on paper, but I never truly felt it on screen. The sparks were lit and the fire never caught. The story was ok, and my biggest wish is that both leads had been smarter. For a revenge drama built on schemes, the strategies and plot twists needed sharper thinking from both of them. I wanted to be amazed by a clever move, and too often I was just waiting for the next reveal to arrive. Brilliant minds should win by brilliance, not by convenience.
Then came the ending, which felt rushed. After so much struggle, I wanted to see the main couple at peace, even for one short epilogue, and the drama never gave me that. I finished the last episode satisfied but still hungry.
My honest word is this: it is not a bad drama at all. It is beautiful, well acted and gripping enough to finish, but it is a love story that forgot to let us feel the love. Then there is the ending. After years of waiting, separation and slow burn, the reunion pays off, but the final episodes rush through everything and skip the couple epilogue you wanted. It is like cooking a feast for thirty days and serving dessert in thirty seconds.
