Unfiltered Rant: A Mess of Missed Potential
Oh God. SPRING OF THE BLADE, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU???If you’ve been watching C-dramas long enough, you probably already know both leads. And yes, I’m a big Xu Kai fan, so how could I not be excited for this? I mean, Yan Rui is HOT. The smugness, the arrogance, that “I can do whatever I want and somehow get away with it” attitude, and plus those deep brown eyes... honestly, he was the eye candy carrying me through this dark drama. And despite all that, what I thought was going to be a great drama turned into a massive disappointment. I genuinely thought this was going to be one of those dark, revenge-driven dramas that completely pulled me in. Instead, the further I got into it, the more everything started falling apart. You can absolutely blame my expectations for this one because the premise had so much potential.
For starters, why was this drama filmed in such ridiculously dark lighting? The lighting is gloomy almost throughout the entire drama. I understand wanting a dark and mysterious atmosphere, but you don't need to make every scene look like it’s happening at midnight. Then there’s the Xie family, who are rotten to the core. They're rotten to the core, but the drama never gives enough convincing motivation behind their actions. Watching everything they did was enough to raise my blood pressure because they were basically awful just for the sake of being awful.
And my biggest rant has to be the whole plot twist surrounding Madam Xie, the father’s identity, and the Xie family secret. The drama tries to turn her regret over the past into this huge emotional revelation, especially when she claims that she’s trying to atone for her sins by protecting Xie Qing Yuan, something she failed to do for her own daughter. BUT HELLO??? You were also the woman who stood by and supported the father’s decision to send the female lead, a physically vulnerable woman, into the middle of a riot filled with rebels, all in the name of protecting the Xie family. You watched your own family mistreat your only blood relative, for fuck’s sake! And now we’re supposed to accept this sudden wave of guilt and redemption? The whole thing completely contradicts her previous actions.
And then we get to the biggest problem: the plot itself. The plot completely loses the plot.
The premise was genuinely interesting at the beginning, but somewhere around the middle, the story started losing direction. By the final stretch, it felt like the writers were rushing to tie together ten different storylines at once. There were so many plot holes and convenient decisions that I eventually stopped trying to make sense of them. Xie Qing Yuan's storyline actually made sense to me. I understood her motivations and why she was willing to go after the Xie family the way she did. Yan Rui, however? What exactly are we doing here? 😭
One of the most ridiculous things to me was how Yan Rui could just walk into the female lead's internal family meetings whenever he wanted, and somehow nobody could do anything about it simply because he was an official. Aren't family affairs supposed to be private? The fact that everyone just seemed to accept his presence made no sense to me. This man supposedly came back to uncover the truth about his family and take down corruption, yet so much of his storyline revolved around showing up whenever the female lead was in trouble. And honestly, I started questioning whether his constant intervention was even helping her. Everyone could clearly see that he was backing her, so wouldn't that just make her position even more vulnerable?
If the writer intended Yan Rui's constant rescuing and unwavering support for Xie Qing Yuan to come across as romantic simp behavior, then they completely missed the mark. His actions actually made the whole “Xie Qing Yuan is my blade” premise feel pointless. Xie Qing Yuan was introduced as a smart and cunning woman who knew how to navigate the dangerous dynamics within her own family. Yet Yan Rui kept stepping in whenever she was in trouble, even to the point of openly backing her during family matters where his presence made little sense. At some point, it stopped feeling like romantic devotion and started undermining the female lead's own capabilities. That disconnect really bothered me because it weakened both characters. Xie Qing Yuan became less capable than she was initially portrayed, while Yan Rui's motivations became increasingly muddled.
And Zhou Ye... God damn it. 😭 I was actually looking forward to seeing her in a darker revenge role, but I could constantly feel that she was acting. Her expressions often felt stiff and awkward, especially during scenes that were supposed to carry a lot of emotional weight. Whether her character was devastated, furious, or calculating, I struggled to feel the emotion behind her performance or connect with her character. Honestly, I don't know what went wrong here. The cast was promising, the premise was promising, and the potential was definitely there. But the writing, editing, character motivations, and rushed plot completely lost me. Xu Kai face was doing a lot of heavy lifting, because without him I don't know if I would've finished this.

Meeting in troubled times, staying together for a lifetime ♥️
Well well… how do I even start with this drama?Spring of the Blade started SO beautifully. In fact, the earlier part of this drama had some of the best tension and intensity I’ve seen in a C-drama in a long time. The staring. The manipulation. The flirting. The constant feeling that neither of them was ever saying exactly what they were thinking. I was SAT.
The first half was, honestly, perfection. It had everything I wanted — romance, one-sided love, revenge, political tension, manipulation, angst, a fast-paced storyline, and that delicious feeling of two people who clearly have feelings for each other but are constantly fighting against them.
And one thing I absolutely LOVED about Shen Run/Yan Rui was the contrast in his character. This man is COLD. Ruthless. Absolutely merciless when it comes to everyone else. He can look at someone like they are nothing and make the most calculated decision without blinking.
But Qing Yuan?
OH, SHE GETS THE PREMIUM VERSION. 😂
For everyone else: “You are expendable.”
For Qing Yuan: “My favourite damsel is in danger? SAY NO MORE.”
The way this man would constantly be ready to save her, protect her, step in whenever she was in danger — while still pretending to be this cold, calculating man — PLEASE.
He could be the most terrifying person in the room, but the moment Qing Yuan was involved, suddenly that ruthless exterior developed a very obvious soft spot. And I LOVED that about him. It wasn't that he suddenly became soft as a character; **he was soft specifically for HER.** That contrast made their relationship even more addictive.
And THAT chemistry???
The way they manipulate each other, test each other, provoke each other, stare at each other like they are simultaneously trying to kill each other and kiss each other… HELLO??? The tension between them carried so much of this drama.
There was always this sense that they were both playing a dangerous game, except neither of them was completely in control anymore because feelings had entered the equation.
I especially loved that their feelings never made them abandon their original goals. Qing Yuan, in particular, was absolutely unwavering in her determination to avenge her mother. She loved Shen Run, yes, but her revenge remained her priority. Even when it meant potentially losing the man she loved, she never simply threw away her resolution for romance. That is the kind of female lead I appreciate.
And Shen Run was no different in his own way. Their feelings complicated everything, but neither of them simply abandoned their principles because they fell in love.
And the love that could never properly be spoken between them??? PAIN
The restraint. The glances. The things left unsaid. The constant push and pull. Honestly, that was the romance for me.
BUT THEN…
Somewhere along the way, the drama started becoming a little draggy.
The whole revenge plot and its connection to the Xie family started feeling increasingly stretched out. And what frustrates me most is that there were SO many things I actually wanted to see instead.
WHERE was Shen Run’s BACKGROUND?!
I wanted to see how he became the Emperor’s most trusted confidant. I wanted to see his rise. I wanted to understand his journey, his political manoeuvring, his relationship with the Emperor, the wars, the court politics, the impeachments, the things that made him the man everyone feared and trusted.
Instead, we were basically told about many of these incredibly important events through dialogue.
You want me to IMAGINE IT???
NO. SHOW ME.
You have Xu Kai standing there looking like that, and you’re going to tell me about his legendary political career through exposition instead of actually giving us scenes of him doing it?!
And ironically, the drama actually did take its time explaining the history and reasons behind everything, and I appreciate that. By the end, there weren't really any major loose ends left hanging. We understood why things happened, who was behind what, and how the different pieces of the story connected.
BUT THAT ALSO CREATED ANOTHER PROBLEM.
Because while the drama was busy tying up every single plot thread, it basically cut off Shen Run and Qing Yuan’s romance.
EXCUSE ME???
You spent all this time giving me their tension, their longing, their emotional push and pull, their sacrifices, their almost-confessions — and then once they finally get through everything…
CUT.
WHERE IS THEIR MARRIED LIFE?!
What happened to them after the fire?!
I don't need another 20 episodes. I don't even need a huge epilogue. GIVE ME A GLIMPSE.
Show me Shen Run and Qing Yuan actually living together. Show me what they are like after finally surviving everything. Show me Qing Yuan being happy. Show me Shen Run finally getting to be openly soft with his favourite woman without having to pretend he's cold and emotionless. Give me domestic scenes. Give me their banter. Give me him annoying her. Give me her teasing him. Give me them waking up beside each other knowing that, for once, nobody is trying to kill them.
I WANT TO SEE THEIR HAPPY LIFE!!!
After everything these two went through, I needed that emotional reward.
The drama gave us the conclusion to the plot, but I wanted the conclusion to their love story too.
And that is probably one of my biggest frustrations with the latter half. It wasn't that the story had loose ends — **it actually did a pretty good job of tying them up.** It was that it spent so much time explaining the history and resolving the revenge that the relationship which made me emotionally invested in the story was suddenly pushed aside.
The same goes for the war/rebellion storyline.
I genuinely thought we were building towards something HUGE, and then… that was it?
So Shen Run and Chunzi basically arrive and fight what feels like "ten men" in a supposedly massive conflict between the nobles and citizens of Hengtang. 😭
THE WAR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HUGE???
And the Emperor… I swear he probably only had to film for one day. 😂 He was basically standing on a balcony, watching everything happen and issuing decrees. THAT’S IT?!
And then the punishment?!
Poison wine.
That’s it?!
WHERE WAS THE COURTROOM CHAOS?!
WHERE WAS THE PUBLIC REVELATION?!
WHERE WAS THE IMPEACHMENT?!
WHERE WAS EVERYONE LOSING THEIR MINDS AFTER THE TRUTH CAME OUT?!
I wanted the entire court to explode.
Instead, so much of it was implied or conveniently resolved off-screen, and I was sitting there like: "Wait… THAT’S how we’re ending this?”
Even though the drama spent so much time setting up Hu Xing as the mastermind behind the conflicts, the eventual rebel/war storyline felt surprisingly anti-climactic. The setup promised something much bigger than the payoff we actually received.
And yet, despite all of that…
QING YUAN AND SHEN RUN
I simply cannot let them go.
Their chemistry, their manipulation of each other, their tension, their intensity, their complicated feelings — THAT was the heart of the drama for me.
And I loved Qing Yuan’s consistency. Earlier in the drama, she basically made it clear that children should not bear the sins of their parents, and I actually appreciated that the story followed through with this by allowing the Xie children to eventually have their own happy endings.
BUT…
QING RU.
Girl.
I’m sorry, but you should have suffered a LITTLE MORE. 😭
She should not have been forgiven and accepted that quickly by Chunzi. MY POOR CHUNZI. After everything she did, I needed some proper retribution before we started handing out happy endings.
That said, I do appreciate the message behind Qing Yuan’s earlier words: a child should not be punished simply for the sins of their parents. It was actually quite satisfying to see that principle reflected in the ending, even if I personally wanted Qing Ru to sweat a little longer. 😂
And then we have…
XU KAI.
I came here for Zhou Ye.
I LEFT OBSESSED WITH XU KAI.
I genuinely never expected this because, all this while, I didn’t particularly care for most of the characters I’d seen him play.
But Shen Run/Yan Rui???
HE EMBODIED HIM.
The aura.
The restraint.
The micro-expressions.
The way he barely has to move his face to make a scene feel intense.
THE EYES???
Those AMBER eyes???
And then that DAMN DEEP VOICE.
I’m on my KNEES.
That voice alone had me replaying episodes 3, 14, 19 and 24 over and over again. Not even necessarily for the plot.
Just to LOOK AT HIM.
Just to HEAR HIM TALK.
At some point I wasn’t even watching the drama anymore. I was conducting a personal study on Shen Run’s voice and facial expressions. 😭
And the crazy thing is, Xu Kai doesn't even have that much screen time compared with what I expected, but every single time he appears, he CARRIES the scene.
The aura???
The eyes???
The micro-expressions???
The controlled emotions???
LEGENDARY.
He made Shen Run/Yan Rui feel powerful without constantly having to tell us that he was powerful. And honestly, I think that restraint made his scenes with Qing Yuan even more addictive.
And I have to mention Xie Shu, because although I wanted to strangle him every time he appeared on screen, that is actually a compliment to Fu Dalong.
He was so convincing as a villain that I genuinely HATED seeing him. 😂 The fact that he could make me feel that much irritation every time he appeared is a testament to how well Fu Dalong played him.
Overall, Spring of the Blade is one of those dramas where I can clearly see the flaws, especially in the latter half, but I still had an absolute blast watching it.
The first half gave me EVERYTHING. The tension, the manipulation, the romance, the revenge, the political intrigue, the forbidden feelings — it was addictive.
The latter half could have been much stronger if the drama had actually shown us the things it kept telling us about, especially Shen Run’s rise, his political history, the court conflicts and the war. I wanted to SEE those moments, not have them explained to me after the fact.
And the final conflict deserved a much bigger payoff. I wanted chaos. I wanted court upheaval. I wanted revelations. I wanted everyone to find out EVERYTHING and collectively lose their minds. 😂
And after all of that, I wanted one final thing:
QING YUAN AND SHEN RUN BEING HAPPY.
Not just surviving. Not just getting their revenge. Not just closing the case.
HAPPY. TOGETHER.
Give me their marriage life. Give me their domestic moments. Give me a glimpse of the life they fought so hard to have.
But despite all those complaints…
Qing Yuan and Shen Run’s chemistry alone was enough to keep me seated.
The tension between them, the love they could never openly express, the constant manipulation, the unwavering revenge, the emotional restraint — I ate it all up.
And then Xu Kai came along and personally attacked me with those eyes and that voice.
So yes, despite its flaws…
9/10 for me
Would I change things? Absolutely.
Would I complain about the pacing, the war, the court politics and the ending? Also absolutely.
Would I still rewatch Shen Run staring at Qing Yuan while speaking in that deep voice?
Unfortunately, yes. Repeatedly.
Spring of the Blade may not have given me the payoff I wanted in every aspect, but it gave me Qing Yuan × Shen Run, and apparently that was enough to ruin my standards for everyone else. 😭

The (Secret of the Xie Family).
The drama was undoubtedly a good watch and the unravelling of the secret was so thrilling and exciting that you will get hooked on the screen, the writer did a good job presenting the secrets layer by layer making it almost impossible to predict it before handWow! the amount of screen time Xie Yu the FL father got is crazy, almost surpassing both of the two leads..
But well deserved, this actor is such a superb villain character in his vicious role
I enjoyed every seconds of his scene..
Uncomfortable truth... He later became my main exciting and focused character in this whole series, without him the whole story plot would have been boring and I might have given up a long time ago.
He made the whole plot, the whole secret thrilling and exciting to watch
Such an epic performance, his smile, his smirk, his voice, his laughter, he's angry face and every single micro expression on his face carries it's own meaning and understanding.. And it changes mood by mood.
Crazy vicious man, he have long stopped reasoning like a normal person, He uses His wooden fan as Emotional control, His menace behaviour as his dignity.. I call him the last villain standing.. but don't be surprised you won't even hate him that much.
Don't wanna talk about the Lead because I'm not impressed by their story anyway... Though they had their peak performances in some episodes and fell short on some episodes, I'm just not interested in ML storytelling the moment he shifted from grudge to his father's new order, though is still part of taking revenge but I'm not that exited about it... I'm not a fan of over Righteous feeding especially when it was too extreme without a convincing just.
To be exact, I love the tyrant but not tyranny Yan Rui, I also love the early personalities of Sheng rui but loses interest with his later big righteous cause...
Same goes to FL but seems otherwise, I love all her revenge journey except the part where she agrees to marry the marquees heir, I love her determination and acting performance.
With all being said, all the cast did a fantastic job presenting their role, looking forward to their new projects and wish them all the best.

Don't have high expectations
This drama is definitely a good time pass, but honestly, I don’t think it’s something worth investing yourself too deeply in.The story felt very average to me. There were moments where I expected to feel more emotionally connected to the characters or the situation, but it never really got there. I didn’t find many genuinely heartfelt scenes, and even the redemption arc, which could have been one of the strongest parts of the story, felt quite underwhelming.
As for the FL, I know she is a good actress, but her acting felt strangely inconsistent in this drama. There were scenes where she was really good and completely believable, but then in other scenes her expressions and emotions felt disconnected from what was happening. It made it difficult for me to stay emotionally invested in her character.
Xu Kai was enjoyable to watch, as always, but even he couldn’t completely make up for the weaknesses in the writing.
Overall, I’d say SOTB is something you can watch when you want an easy drama to pass the time, but I wouldn’t go into it expecting a story with great emotional depth, memorable romance, or a particularly satisfying redemption arc. It’s watchable, but for me, it’s definitely not one I’ll be thinking about after it ends.

Just okay, With Some MakJang Twists
*These are just my thoughts and opinions; we don't have to agree*The story revolves around a girl (Qing Yuan) who made plans to take revenge on the people who framed her mother and also killed her mother.
Along the way, she meets Shen Run, a man who has lived for revenge, along with his brother; they are both the sole survivors of the Shen family massacre after their family was wrongfully accused. We follow them as they seek revenge, find romance/love, and confront the truth of the past.
Likes
The leads' interaction and banter in the first half were really good- that alone kept me watching. Their chemistry was great; I could feel the tension between them from their stares and banter. The kiss in episode 23 was a result of the yearning, angst, and passion they developed over the 22 episodes of Spring of Blade.
I enjoyed the chaos, conflicts, and fights in the Xie family, and the mystery surrounding who framed her mother kept me intrigued, but I guessed the culprit at some points.
Dislikes
Towards the end, the drama became silly; in your case, you might actually enjoy it. In my opinion, they were running a MAKJANG plot with the woman lovingly raising the daughter of the woman she killed; after 19 years, the daughter learns the truth and poisons her fake mother with something mild, and the fake mother knows her daughter now knows the truth and is currently poisoning her; she then takes in something more harmful than what her daughter used to poison her, she dies, and her daughter sobs for her and calls her mom. Haha, everything going on was absurd.
Let's not even get into the secret birth swap and the truth being brought to light 19 years later.
The child actor who portrayed the lead- their acting wasn't strong to me, but I believe it's the directing; I didn't empathize with the younglings who lost their entire family overnight, and they were smiling and laughing the next morning, talking about revenge when their family had just died last night.
In my opinion, Zhou Ye acting was lacking, and at times it came across as really strong. In the scene where she acted like she was possessed, I literally cringed. It felt as though she was practicing for the scene before executing it.
The ending felt rushed to me, and I thought some scenes got skipped/glossed over; the flashbacks took a lot of screen time. The leads were rarely shown individually in the last episode, talking more as a couple. The FL's revenge arc felt subdued in comparison to her counterparts(The Glory, The Double), and she contradicts her character as someone who came for revenge; instead, she acts like a damsel in distress who would have been dead if the ML didn't always show up.
Hu Xing and the evil acts he planned to commit were resolved easily; he was beaten too easily, and his ending was also mild, given the power and influence he had in Heng Tang.
I was really disheartened when Li Cong Xin was tricked into marrying the woman he never wanted to marry; I'm glad that, in the end, they were on healthy terms, and Qing Ru seems to have matured a lot after her marriage.
Final Thoughts
The drama ended on a happy note; everyone was living a peaceful, calm, and quiet life, including the leads. Xie Shu got a satisfying ending; he seemed to be delusional at his last moments, but he got what he deserved. He was really evil and deserved the worst death.
The emperor didn't seem like one to me; it was like there wasn't enough budget for the palace and attire, or their wasn't enough officials to stand before the emperor. We just see the emperor in a particular spot, either sitting down and meditating or standing and talking like an emperor. Anyway, if I were told that he is an emperor, I wouldn't believe it.
This is a one-time watch, and I mostly enjoyed it for the leads and some parts of the plot. The manner in which the relationship developed between characters who like each other was unconvincing; they hardly have any real interaction, and yet they fall deeply in love.
Anyway, that's it.
Thanks for reading🩷.

Wasted Potential
Spring of the blade is an great example of a wasted potential drama. They really castes such a great cast only to waste their talents. The director took on such an great project only for it to be ruined.Production failed, the scenes had no sequence and the visible lip sync..???
Where did the relationship of the main leads go???
I read on twitter that the production didn't have the budget so most of the ML's scenes were not filmed. This entire drama was shot in the xie residence and it's also why we didn't see much promotional content of Zhou Ye and Xu Kai because the production didn't have the budget and the producer went bankrupt and it's also why the leads had to dub themselves or else Xu Kai or Zhou Ye don't dub themselves often. The entire story went downhill and the last 6 episodes ruined the entire storyline.
Genuinely only the visuals and acting of the actors are saving this drama. I have never written such a bad review for any drama before nor has my ranking been this slow but this drama genuinely disappointed me. I waited for this drama since last year after watching legend of the female general and falling into your smile. So I was really expecting more from this drama.

A revenge story carried by chemistry and strategy
This series combines revenge, political intrigue, and romance through the story of Qingyuan, a woman who returns to the Xie clan determined to uncover the truth behind the tragedies that destroyed her family. Alongside her is Yan Rui, a powerful and influential figure who has his own reasons for targeting the corruption hidden within the clan. What makes their dynamic interesting is that their relationship is built on history. They knew each other as children and share a connection that comes from surviving difficult circumstances together. Years later, they reunite under very different identities, but with a common goal of exposing the truth and bringing down those responsible.
Qingyuan enters the Xie clan to reclaim her place and pursue her own revenge, while Yan Rui needs someone inside the family to help him investigate their crimes. Their partnership begins as a strategic alliance, with both of them using each other to achieve their goals. However, the more time they spend together, the more their relationship evolves beyond simple convenience.
The romance is definitely one of the strongest elements of the series. Yan Rui, especially, makes his feelings very obvious early on, and watching their playful interactions and constant back-and-forth is one of the highlights. They challenge each other, tease each other, and have a natural chemistry that makes their scenes enjoyable to watch. Their relationship feels like a mix of reluctant trust, rivalry, attraction, and mutual respect.
I also enjoyed that Qingyuan is not simply a character being protected by the male lead. She has her own motivations, intelligence, and determination, and it works because both of them bring something valuable to the table.
The dialogue flows well, and the story moves at a very fast pace. There are inconsistencies and plot holes in the story who aren’t properly wrapped. It doesn’t stop the story in general, and I do think it is because it went from 40 to 30 episodes, but some things were worth tying up. At times, the speed can make certain developments feel rushed, and the acting quality can feel barely decent depending on the scene. However, the chemistry between the leads helps carry the series and keeps the emotional aspects engaging.
Overall, this is an entertaining watch if you enjoy revenge stories with romance at the center. The combination of political schemes, personal vendettas, and a couple who genuinely enjoys playing off each other makes it a fun series to follow. Be sure to know that there’s plenty of frustration to go around with most characters.

ML and Supporting Cast Shine !While everything else tries to drag it down!
First of all i am a fan of the FL actress so i was really looking forward for this drama. This pairing felt really interesting as the ML actor is really known for his expressions but i was really worried they would do him dirty with a weirdly styled wig * the dreaded side swept bangs* but fortunately for us they got the wig so right this time, his visual and acting is such a delightful surprise that i would tell you to give it a chance just based on that lol. Sadly the FL's acting left much to be desired. It just felt like she was struggling to show the complex personality of the protagonist. It could also be a direction issue. The supporting cast really pulled it through and made the viewing enjoyable. On to the story now, it started with this eerie vibe with the look of the drama but the story always struggled catching up to it. I am not saying the story is not engaging but just saying its not engaging enough and might I say a little bit rushed. Maybe its the editing too cause the parts of the story are not let to just sit there and are rushed. So for people who like fast paced stories will definately enjoy this one. I really like the type of story telling where they let the viewer decipher the story as it moves but in this one the subtle hints were just messy and while watching , it always felt like being dropped in the middle of the story. I just wished there were more subtle acting and visual cues. Cause the acting from everyone could have pulled it off as even the supporting cast was phenomenal. One such example is SL falling for the FL, yes we can argue it was love at first sight but thats stretching it cause there were no aha this is love at first sight moment! Much of the drama misses this type of visual cues or even if the cue is present then the audience are not given enough time to process it as it is rushed.
The drama is based on historical fictional setting so it is liberal with the traditional etiquettes but since it is still a historical drama the frequent use of modern etiquettes feels zarring and pulls you out of the story when you notice something. Like multiple times the ML just grabs FL infront of her entire family and it just doesnt have the impact the the production is going for instead it just breaks the immersion for audiences of a historical period drama watchers. Its not a requirement to strictly follow the social etiquettes, interpersonal boundaries as many historical dramas do take liberties but in this drama the traditional ones are replaced by modern ones maybe thats why many scenes feel off.
Okay now the part that i really could have done without, what is going on with the constant weird BGM it is getting on my nerve cause its making the scene goofy. The actors are doing good, story is going fine the scene is really beautifully shot and then you hear this grating BGM. Could be just a me problem too and it didnt make me stop watching the show but seriously could have done without it. With the vibe that the acting, directing and even story is going for, the scene could have just dialogues with silence to build tension.
I recommend this show for the ML's and supporting character's acting, and it is beautifully shot also the story doesnot drag(which honestly is not good for this production). But other than that I wont be going out of my way to recommend it or rewatch it. The frustrating part is the story had so much potential and it is such a visually appealing show.

A Revenge Story That Could Have Been So Much Better
I started this drama mainly for Zhou Ye and Xu Kai, and the opening gave me high hopes. It had a dark, intriguing atmosphere, an interesting revenge setup, and characters whose motivations made me curious. Unfortunately, while the beginning was strong, the story gradually lost some of its momentum.Xu Kai was easily my biggest reason for sticking with it. Shen Run was my favourite character, and I enjoyed watching his patience, intelligence, and determination. Xu Kai also did a great job showing the contrast between Yan Rui and Shen Run. His performance and chemistry with Zhou Ye were among the drama's strongest points.
Qingyuan had a promising introduction. She was intelligent, capable, and determined, and I initially looked forward to seeing her carry out her revenge. However, as the story progressed, her decisions became increasingly driven by revenge, sometimes at the expense of the intelligence and caution she had shown earlier. Her repeated reliance on Shen Run to get out of difficult situations also made her feel less capable than the character we first met. I especially struggled with her decision to marry Li Congxin as part of her plan. I wanted more reflection on the choices she made and the impact they had on Shen Run.
The romance had genuine chemistry, and I enjoyed the early tension between the leads. Their enemy phase, with all the teasing and testing, was particularly fun, and I wouldn't have minded if it had lasted longer. The slow burn eventually paid off, but I still wanted more emotional development. These two had a shared past, years of separation, and so much history to work through, yet much of it was presented as information rather than something we really got to experience. I also wish the story had given them more opportunities to work together as partners instead of constantly separating their storylines.
The revenge plot was probably my biggest disappointment. The grain fraud investigation was a strong starting point, with enough mystery and political intrigue to keep me invested. But as the story moved forward, the Xie family began to dominate the narrative, while Shen Run's own story and revenge seemed to take a back seat. There was so much potential in his background and the years he spent away, and I wanted the drama to explore those parts more deeply. The political storyline also felt somewhat distant, with court matters often explained rather than brought to life through compelling scenes.
The supporting characters had potential too, but several of them were underused. The maid and other characters who could have supported Qingyuan's plans often faded into the background. I also never felt that the Xie family had the same presence or authority as the powerful family matriarchs in other historical dramas. Some of the conflicts became exaggerated, and their eventual resolutions didn't always feel as satisfying as they could have been.
On the production side, I liked the costumes and the dark historical atmosphere, especially in the early episodes. However, some settings and visual choices started to feel repetitive, and the editing and background music occasionally distracted me.
Overall, Spring of the Blade had an intriguing premise, a strong opening, and a central couple with good chemistry, but its execution didn't quite live up to its potential. I would have liked more focus on Shen Run's story, a more emotionally developed reunion, and a revenge plot that allowed both leads to contribute meaningfully. I'd put it around 7 to 7.5, with Xu Kai being the main reason I enjoyed it as much as I did. I don't think it was a bad drama, just one that could have been so much better.

Started with a Sizzling Couple, ended with a bunch of Pitiful Parents."
Subjective Gut Rating: 8.25I wouldn’t say “Spring of the Blade” is my most anticipated drama, because I don’t anticipate much. LOL But Xu Kai and Zhou Ye are two of my favorite Chinese actors and I believe in their acting (probably more than most). Although I am somewhat unexcited about yet ANOTHER revenge story, I am happy to check this out as it’s only 30 episodes. This episode count might end up being a curse afterall.
What I Like:
1. Xu Kai/Yan Rui/Shen Rui - As I said, he’s one of my favorites since his “Arsenal Military Academy” days and playing the role of Yan Rui shows how much Xu Kai has matured as an actor. His big eyes show so much emotion even without saying a word. And if he is saying something, his eyes add volume and weight to what he’s about to say. Yan Rui could be cold and ruthless, pettily jealous but sweet, calm and imposing, and a little controlling and possessive. Xu Kai portrays this so well.
2. Zhou Ye/Xie Qing Yuen/Chen Yun Ya - A change of scenery for her as this is probably one of her more mature and quieter roles. She’s always deep in her thoughts, controlled without reacting to unkind words, but always has a smart comeback when needed. I don’t think Zhou Ye has quite mastered those subtle facial expressions yet, as compared to Xu Kai, but I do like her portrayal as this stubborn, revengeful daughter.
3. Chemistry - The leads chemistry is sizzling, especially in the first half of the drama. Their back-and-forth comebacks and trying to outsmart each other is another way of flirting. Who knew Xu Kai could flirt with such a serious face, without actually flirting? There isn’t a lot of skinship (except for one somewhat long makeout scene) but it still shows how electric their interactions are. Unfortunately, they didn’t really have much to show towards the end of the drama.
4. Acting + Supporting Cast - The acting in general is solid. The younger generation of siblings performed well. But the veterans are the ones who truly shine. The older generation really makes you hate, pity, or want to root for them. Oh, and I get to see Bai Shu play an angry commoner instead of yet another Prince or Emperor. It’s always lovely to see him.
5. Action scenes - There aren’t many, but the ones we do have are well choreographed and hard-hitting. Xu Kai was great in these scenes. We got blood splatter on the faces, dirty faces and messy hair, while trying to slash with a sword. It’s refreshing to see blood splattering instead of blood spitting. LOL
6. Family plot twist - I was surprised about the real reason for the murder of FL’s mother. I definitely didn’t see it coming. So, in a way, it was a pleasant surprise how all the secrets unfolded in the last 5 episodes. But the execution of these episodes go into the category of “What I don’t Like”.
7. Pacing (first two-thirds of drama) - I was engaged for most of the drama. There’s enough going on between the leads and each of the Xie family members. I was not bored and had high hopes that I would end up giving this drama a higher score than 8.0. Then, the last 5 episodes happened.
8. Production - The production quality seems high. The costumes, hair accessories and sets look glamorous and well-made. I am especially pleased that the actors are using their own voices even if there’s no live recording (more about this below).
What I have Mixed Feelings and Dislike;
1. Last 5 episodes - This is the big elephant in the room and the reason why my rating got dragged down. The leads disappear during the 5 episodes. The parents were just spitting out all the secrets and letting us know what really happened 9 years ago. But the execution is not good. There are monologues and monologues for each of them. Xu Kai was barely there. Zhou Ye was there, but rarely had anything to say. I wonder if this is due to the editing and cutting down the drama to 30 episodes only. The pacing is totally off. Maybe if there are a few more episodes to the drama, they can do a better job mixing in the secrets revelation with other events to not feel like they dumped every single plot twist on us in slowly spewed out words by the parent generation. It became a pity party and we are supposed to feel bad for them? And the big bad villain became a cartoonish character. Some of these deaths don’t make sense, or they cut out scenes that’s why they don’t make sense. It’s disappointing that the drama couldn’t stick its landing.
2. ML’s real plan - That was a disappointing and uninteresting revelation of his real plan. The revenge plot might be better. But politics and reforms without an interesting setup becomes disjointed and boring. I’d rather see Xu Kai kill more people and be covered in blood.
3. Love Square - The 2ML is a boring character. He was introduced as this charismatic man on a horse with archery skills to be the love of all women’s lives. He then resorted to being a love sick puppy who won’t take No for an answer. Luckily, he’s not annoying and is quite harmless. But the 2nd Sister really needs someone to knock some sense into her. She’s the annoying one.
4. Sound editing - As much as I love the actors using their own voice, the sound editing and mixing are off. Xu Kai’s voice seems so much quieter than the veterans. It could be because he’s not experienced enough to dub himself and to enunciate better. Sometimes music is played so loud that I can’t hear the lines. Luckily, they don’t plan the same song over and over again.
Despite a disappointing end, I did have a great time for most of the drama. I get to see my favorite actors performing well wearing fancy costumes and looking dashing. The pacing was good for the most part and the acting is solid. Even though I don’t like the execution of the last 5 episodes, I do like the surprising revelation of all the secrets. I do think it’s worth checking out “Spring of the Blade”.

What makes the story even more interesting is that both of them are incredibly clever. They understand each other so well, and their chemistry is amazing, yet the truth about their past is still hidden from them. Watching their journey is emotional, heartbreaking, and romantic all at the same time.
And Xu Kai… absolutely brilliant! 👏 His acting is outstanding, especially in the emotional scenes. He really knows how to express feelings through his eyes and expressions.
I’m genuinely loving this drama. It has mystery, emotions, sadness, romance, and a beautiful story that keeps you wanting to watch the next episode. ❤️
Definitely a drama you should give a try! ✨
