a beautiful blade, poorly forged

Spring of the Blade had been on my watchlist mainly for Zhou Ye and Xu Kai, so naturally, I had high hopes. Thankfully, their pairing delivered. Their chemistry is one of the drama’s greatest strengths—there is something wonderfully playful in the way Xie Qingyuan and Shen Run constantly test, tease, and outmanoeuvre one another. Zhou Ye also gave Xie Qingyuan a lovely sense of intelligence and strength; her character gradually unfolds into someone capable and decisive, and her past and motivations are given enough room to make her journey feel complete.

The revenge arc, which serves as the heart of the story, was also handled rather well. The secrets were revealed gradually, piece by piece, and I enjoyed watching the truth emerge beneath everything that had happened. My difficulty lies more in everything surrounding that central story. I have not read the novel, so I can only speak from the drama itself, but I often found myself wondering whether the story simply needed more time—or perhaps less of it. There are episodes filled with conversations and detours, yet some of the most important parts of the characters’ lives feel strangely absent. Shen Run is the clearest example. His family was massacred overnight after being accused of corruption and treason, leaving only him and his brother alive. From such a painful beginning, how did he eventually become a highly respected official, trusted and favoured by the new emperor? I wanted to understand that journey: how he survived, what shaped him, and what brought him to the person we meet in the story. Unfortunately, much of it remains only a shadow. I heard that some of Shen Run’s storyline may have been affected by production difficulties, and if so, I can only feel sorry that Xu Kai’s character was unable to receive the depth he deserved. The revenge may have reached its destination, but it could not entirely make up for the parts of Shen Run’s story we never had the chance to see.

The pacing becomes especially difficult in the latter half, when the story spends so much time around the Xie family that Shen Run sometimes feels almost like a supporting character in his own story. The final episodes were particularly frustrating, because our two leads received surprisingly little meaningful screen time. Even the political side of the story often feels distant: there is an emperor, there are ministers, accusations and impeachments, yet we rarely see the court itself or the confrontations that should give these events their weight. The Marquis’ death and sacrifice, for instance, are largely explained rather than experienced. I also had mixed feelings about Second Lady Xie’s ending. After everything she had done, I expected a more meaningful consequence. And Li Chongxin himself was such a quietly tragic character—betrayed by the people he trusted most, yet still gentle enough to want to help others. Perhaps that gentleness is also why he could never truly be the person Xie Qingyuan needed beside her.

Despite my reservations about the writing, I cannot deny that Spring of the Blade is a beautiful production. There are many lovely compositions, thoughtful camera angles, and moments where the directing captures the atmosphere beautifully, even if the focus occasionally felt somewhat misplaced. The soundtrack also complements the story well. I have heard that the production may have faced financial difficulties, and if that is true, perhaps it explains some of the limitations that become noticeable along the way. It is a little bittersweet to see such a promising production feel as though it had to make compromises.

In the end, I am grateful that I watched it for Zhou Ye and Xu Kai, because their chemistry was every bit as enjoyable as I had hoped. If you come for their quiet provocations, playful exchanges, and the pleasure of watching two clever people circle around one another, there is much to enjoy. The revenge story itself also keeps its promise and eventually brings its secrets to light. But for me, the drama leaves behind a lingering feeling of what could have been. The pieces were beautiful—the actors, the chemistry, the premise, the atmosphere—yet some of the most important pieces never quite found their place.

A soap opera-like drama

If you enjoy dramas that are dramatic for no reason, where everything is all over the place, with a smart vengeful female lead and a ruthless male lead, check this out!
Zhou Ye and Xu Kai was a pairing I did not know I needed but enjoyed so bad. They had great chemistry and their acting was on point. Especially Xu Kai who embodied being a cutthroat lord yet a loser in love perfectly, his expressions were so great. And the supporting cast did a good job too. Some characters were annoying like no other to the point you'll want to slap them, while some others were so brazenly evil, you'll become enraged whenever you see their faces, lol. Get ready to have your blood pressure rising because of one specific family nonsense. XD
There is a lot of plot holes, the storyline is not well structured unfortunately and we have a rushed ending but the drama remains enjoyable because somehow it keeps you hooked. Secrets and crazy plot twists unravel in a way no one could have guess, it makes the show more thrilling, hehehe. The revenge is quite satisfying, no one is let off the hook. ^^
Overall, it's an averagely good watch, mainly because the actors play well despite the so-so production.

Great story, but it was butchered by the production team.

Spring of the Blade had a well-written story with so much potential, but the production was terrible. Cutting the episodes hurt the pacing, leaving parts of the story feeling rushed and disconnected. It became hard to watch at times because moments that needed room to build were barely given a chance to land.

What disappointed me most was how much those cuts took away from the audience’s experience. The reveals and emotional moments could have delivered a real “wow” factor, but the editing weakened their impact. I enjoyed the story, which makes it even more frustrating, it deserved a production that could do it justice. I really feel bad for the leads, Xu Kai and Zhou Ye. Their performances deserved better, and it’s frustrating to see the production and episode cuts take away from the impact of their work.

Weak in almost every aspect

This project had nice opportunities and didn't use any of them; it started promising but lost its way in the middle and ended in an absurdly weak note.

I could say that the failure is the main couple's fault and call it a day, but surprisingly, they weren't the culprits. Although I'm yet to be blown away by any of Xu Kai's work, his portrait was one of the highlights here: crazy eyes, questionable actions, and a lot of lust for the FL. He and Zhou Ye had a lot of chemistry, and with a better script, they could've challenged other good couples we had this year.

Zhou Ye is the main character here, but she can't do much beyond the first episodes; she delivers naivety in a sweet way, and it's surprising how cunning she can be, but after a while the revenge doesn't land well enough, and it feels like QingYuan is beating a dead horse until the last episode.

There are some buzzy scenes, and they can fool you into thinking this will go somewhere; it doesn't. The FL run laps around 'her family' with an accidental mistake here and there for all 30 episodes, but the ending is very "what the hell, sure" for both the revenge and the romance, so it's double meh.

In the end, there are lots of other shows with the same premise and better execution.

Storyline, acting, cinematography

I have mixed feelings about this drama, the storyline has a lot of potential, especially with the revenge plot, family conflicts and secrets

I like that the fl has her own goals and isn’t simply there for the romance. She was determined to find out the truth about her mother’s death, which is so much better than her just running behind ml with no other goal

Xu Kai as Shen Run is definitely the highlight for me tho

He was intelligent, calculating and difficult to figure out. You can tell that there’s more to his character than who he was shown as

Their dynamic is probably one of the biggest reasons I’d recommend this show

The chemistry between the leads is insane. The banter, the tension and the fact that the relationship doesn’t randomly pop out of nowhere

They have their own motives, and they’re trying to figure each other out while also working towards their individual goals was really good to watch

However, I do think the romantic development can feel uneven and I wish some moments had been given more time to develop cuz it felt hurried or cut out at some points, tho I understand it’s directed by a suspense eye

My biggest issue is the writing and pacing. There are parts of the plot that are genuinely intriguing, but sometimes the story gets caught up in family politics and side plots that is so unnecesary

Some character decisions could also have been explained better, because there are moments when I want to know WHY did they do this but nope, we apparently just move on

Visually, I enjoy the historical setting, costumes and overall aesthetic. I love love love how they’ve tried putting their outfits together/ color coordinating them

I would have preferred a tighter storyline with more focus on the characters’ motivations than just random drama

Do I like it? Yes, but would I call it a very good drama? Probably not

(also can we talk ab how shen run is always camping at fls house??????)

The Men Were Fighting Wars, the Women Were Escaping Fate, and Me? Lost in Their Dialogues.. lol

Have you ever finished a drama feeling satisfied with the ending, yet wondered why the journey didn't affect you as much as you expected? That's how I feel about Spring of the Blade.

The drama has romance, political intrigue, family conflicts, and memorable characters, but something about the overall storytelling kept me from becoming fully emotionally invested. I appreciated what it offered, even if I wished it had left a deeper impression.

Shen Run and Qingyuan were among the highlights for me. What I admired about Shen Run was how he translated his love into action. When their future was at stake, he acted decisively, coordinating the arrangements needed to secure their relationship in an incredibly short time. His determination and resourcefulness made his love convincing. He wasn't simply waiting for things to work out; he was actively fighting for the future they wanted.

Xu Kai's fighting scenes were another standout. His movements have a raw, explosive quality that makes each strike feel heavy and impactful. The action doesn't rely solely on elegant poses; there's a sense of momentum and physical force behind his movements. It's a distinctive quality that made the fight scenes particularly enjoyable to watch.

My main reservation, however, is the dialogue. Many conversations rely on hidden meanings, indirect remarks, and implications that the characters seem to understand immediately. I sometimes found myself trying to decipher what was actually being said rather than immersing myself in the scene. While this subtlety can enrich political intrigue, it occasionally made the storytelling feel more demanding than engaging. Translation and cultural context may also have contributed to the difficulty.

This affected my emotional connection with the story. I could recognize the significance of certain events without necessarily feeling their full impact. I wanted more room for the characters' inner struggles and emotional consequences to develop, rather than having to infer so much from their circumstances.

Li Congxin was particularly interesting to me. Beyond his heartbreak, I appreciated how his experiences forced him to confront his responsibilities as a son, a commander, and a husband. He had to understand his father's sacrifices and recognize what was at stake if he failed to fulfill his own duties. To me, his growth was not simply about letting go of an unattainable love, but about accepting reality and becoming more conscious of the people who depended on him.

I also found the ending satisfying because the sisters were finally able to lead their own lives, free from many of the family restrictions that shaped the previous generation. Their different paths reinforced one of the drama's most meaningful ideas: the next generation doesn't have to repeat the lives of those who came before them.

Overall, Spring of the Blade has qualities worth appreciating, particularly its romance, action scenes, and themes of love, sacrifice, responsibility, and freedom. However, its dialogue-heavy storytelling and the emotional distance I sometimes felt prevented it from becoming a truly moving experience for me.

SHOULD YOU WATCH IT?
If you enjoy historical romance, political intrigue, subtle exchanges, and forceful action scenes, give it a try. If you prefer straightforward dialogue and consistently deep emotional engagement, you may find it less satisfying.

I finished the drama appreciating where the characters ended up, even though I wished the story had made me feel more along the way. Sometimes, a drama gives you enough to understand its characters, but not quite enough to make you feel their story.

Rizz, ruthlessness & Xu Kai. I’m seated.

Being a Xu Kai fan, I’m honestly just pleased to watch him run with this level of rizz and ruthlessness. 😂

The plot has kept me hooked too. I want to know who did what, what happens next, and where this is all going. And yes, the chemistry is there.

Having watched Xu Kai in AMA, Wonderland of Love and As Beautiful As You, I’ve always felt his eyes and subtle expressions are what make him such a good actor. Eight Hundred proved his acting mettle, and with this one, I’m getting to see his range. Comedic, romantic, grey, ruthless… the man clearly has a lot more in his bones than just looking pretty on screen.

Does the show have issues? Obviously. But I find it entertaining, and that’s enough for me to stay invested.

The realism complaints also make me laugh a little. We’ve watched commoners rise through impossible social hierarchies, servants enter nobility, and people fall in love across rigid class structures, but apparently this is where we draw the realism line. 😭

The editing can be rough, sure, but I didn’t find it so bizarre that I couldn’t enjoy the show. I’ve seen plenty of questionable productions get a pass because the leads are pretty or the pairing is popular. So I’m not suddenly getting a PhD in editing over this one. 😂

People can complain all they want. But not every drama has to be either a masterpiece or garbage, and not every actor needs to be compared to prove someone else is “better.”

I’m just here watching Xu Kai serve rizz, menace and range. Let me enjoy my show in peace. 😭

Good watch

Despite the popular actors, in fact I dont care much for popular actors as long as the storyline is original and can keep me in suspense.

Estelle Chen from "Love like the Galaxy" should have been part of the 'main leads' as she is intrinsically linked to the FL. I really love the tension between Estelle's and Zhou's as this really brings out their brilliant acting skills.
Im just disappointed that these girls didnt get swords 🤭
Instead, Zhou is used as a knife in someones hand.

I love the ML and FL obvious suspicion of each other and their flirting and even their subtle care (which viewers cant really tell) for each other.

Episode 1: "Don't tell me you've forgotten me already?"
The script writer is good at playing with my mind with this line from the ML
I am still confused whether he is talking about their past (childhood sweetheart) or present meeting.
Did he recognise her?

In Episode 4 is another maze of enigma for me.
I found his extreme anger at the nanny for beating her, him protecting her, and his possessiveness puzzling too. Is he protecting his childhood sweetheart or a stranger he only presently had interactions with?

So, as a viewer, I love this "tickle your mind" storyline. It keeps me looking forward to another episode.

One of the Most Satisfying Historical C-Dramas of 2026! ?️✨

Spring of Blade has been my most anticipated drama since filming first got announced and wow, it completely delivered! Zhou Ye and Xu Kai were so professional and played their roles to perfection. Their chemistry as two super smart, fearless leads chasing justice for their families was so satisfying and I loved how well their chemistry translated all the way from their childhood scenes to the present.

The wedding crashing scene where he steals her away was completely incredible! 💥 Zhou Ye as Qing Yuan was literally amazing she made her character so smart, brave, and gorgeous, and every single detail of her Hanfu and makeup was breathtaking ✨ Xu Kai brought so much charisma to his shameless, fearless character and I really respected how the second male lead was written too I was so proud that he didn't turn into an obsessive green-eyed villain like in other shows.

Honestly, the whole cast killed it and all the actors were so professional. With the gorgeous Han Tang aesthetic and stunning locations this is a total 10/10 💯 If you love a good revenge drama, you HAVE to watch this! 🍿

He’s Handsome. She’s Angry. Plot Is Missing

I really wanted to like Spring of Blade, but unfortunately this was another disappointment in another 2026 edition of disappointing C drama’s.

And honestly, I don’t understand why this drama has such high reviews. Maybe I watched a completely different drama from everyone else. 😂

First of all, yes the male lead is handsome. Very handsome. Unfortunately, being handsome is not a substitute for having an actual character arc. He felt like he was there to look good while the story happened around him.

And then there’s Zhou Ye as the FL. I keep wanting to find a drama of hers that finally works for me, but once again, I found myself frustrated.

The revenge story was weak on both sides.

This drama had all the ingredients for something intense: betrayal, revenge, family conflict, secrets and plenty of reasons for these characters to hate each other. But somehow the revenge never had the impact it should have.

Instead, we got plot holes. Lots of plot holes.

All that revenge, and nobody thought to check the plot holes. 😂

The wedding, for example, was ridiculous. The way she came into that family was crazy, and I was sitting there thinking, Are we seriously doing this?

And the father? I don’t even know where to start. His whole part of the story had me questioning what the writers were thinking.

Then there was the sister drama, which just kept adding to the chaos without giving me the emotional payoff I was expecting.

And let’s talk about the grandmother explaining everything at the end.

Lazy. Lazy writing.

Instead of properly developing the characters, motivations and family history throughout the drama, we’re basically handed explanations at the end and expected to accept them.

That isn’t satisfying storytelling. That’s the writers trying to clean up the mess they created.

And then there was the tone.

This drama was supposed to be serious. Dark. Emotional. Revenge-driven.

But honestly? I found it comical. 😂

Not because it was trying to be funny, but because so many of the situations and writing choices became ridiculous that I couldn’t take the drama as seriously as it wanted me to. The frustrating thing is that I could see the potential. There was a good revenge story buried somewhere in here. The characters had enough history and motivation to make it compelling. But the execution just wasn’t there.

He’s handsome. She’s angry. Everyone wants revenge. All that revenge, and nobody thought to check the plot holes.

And honestly, I still don’t understand the high reviews.

Disappointing.

this show loses ir marbles and the actress cannot act to save her life

This show done losing it's mind bec what even is happening atp. The show started BRILLIANTLY and the buildup was good and XU kai is amazing!!! but what is the FLs problem??? can she not act??? she is genuinely the rzn the drama starts falling apart- she doesn't cry, even when she is in love- she has that same stoic face as she's had from ep. 1 like GIVE US SOME EXPRESSION???? Even when people treat her well, she is cold and condescending almost and I LOVEEEE how she expects the ML to drop everything and come save her bec her plans are genuinely so silly that I'm suprised at how she is alive. If she was the villan and the drama was, let's say, shot from the MLs POV and if he didn't help her, she would've died in the hands of nanny rong only bec she has the survival imstict of a POTATO OK??? Xu kai has to carry thus drama so much bec he atleast acts and every scene of his goes in just saving/protecting the FL while she stands there like a brick wall. Instead of understanding her grandma in the last aired ep (who objectively is a POS), she spends all her time chastising everyone around her and using EVERYONE who loves her bec she is entitled to it just bec her mom died? babe the 5th concubines daughter is shown as a villan and she isn't even doin half the bullshit you are?? how she dealt with the marquis son was miserable and almost made me wish they killed her character off just bec of how toxic she was. She is a child who wants a particular toy called revenge and if in the pursuit of it she destroyes life, she doesn't care bec girlboss pr wtv but isn't that EXACLY what the villans did?
overall, dropping it bec of how BAD THE FLs actions and ACTIMG is. Xu kai,i love you and you save this drama but pls choose better omes next time
