The plot is deep and satisfying
About myself:I am a Gen-X growing up watching many HK dramas. Currently more than 10 years in hiatus watching c-drama because of workload and reducing interest in dramas. This is the 4th c-drama I watched after regaining some interest and time. The drama I watched recently is Shine on Me (8.5), My Genius Girlfriend (8.0), Love for You (8.5) and Spring of the Blade (9.0)
My review:
This c-drama is very interesting as it possesses deep plots in it's story-telling which, kept me guessing what happened in the past and got me catching up on episodes release everyday (I seldom catch up on dramas as I ages, for some reason. So, bravo. I really think this is a good one). The hot and cold romance between the ML and the FL is also very nicely performed by both of them. I think Xu Kai and Zhou Ye performance is truly amazing in the drama. Xu Kai facial expression is excellent as an arrogant bastard, yet, kind-hearted and loving on the inside and Zhou Ye is really good at playing 'ice-cold' ancient costume character. The are plenty of memorable scenes in the drama. The music is very good too.
Why I rated it at only 9.0 is because:
1. Lack of action scenes. There are a few action scenes but I think it will get me thrilled a little bit more if there are more actions scenes since, I am used to HK movies in the 90s.
2. The CGI on the last episode is too fake.
3. As the matriarch of Xie family and when living as the Palace Commander, in the ending, but can live a simple life doesn't really make sense. Though, I understand the screenwriter is trying to give the drama a happy ending. If I am to rewrite the ending, I think, I would put the ML and FL separated for awhile because of work, e.g. FL working as Matriarch and ML busy with implementing the new policy, but gives an ending where they are reunited when they bump into each other again during work and spent a night together on the beach with firework and love as shown in the movie.
4. The scene on the last episode where both the ML and FL walking away gives me a kind of weird feeling. I mean I couldn't catch the feeling at all. Is it a vengeful feeling? Is it a letting go feeling? Is that a happy or sad feeling? Is that a satisfaction feeling? I just couldn't get the feeling they are trying to express although I understand the ending.
5. The scene where the rebellion takes place against the 2 generals got too little people 😂. It doesn't look grand. The mid-section of the story where the ML saves the FL got more people. Maybe it's time to use some AI to make the fight looks big 😂.
6. So far, for all these 4 c-drama that I have watched, I find that their endings are considered quite 'weak' or not very satisfying. In short, although it's happy ending but the ending failed to touch my heart. But these 4 c-dramas are 'very strong' in their mid-story.
7. The background music is too loud in the last 4 episodes. I can barely hear the voice of the actresses and actors.
Conclusion:
I think, It's a very notable 'ancient costume' c-drama for 2026. I am surprised the heat index is not that high. I think China should start to find a way to implement cross-platform rather than making exclusives (I never like the idea of exclusives like Sony Playstation or Xbox or iQiyi or Youku or WeTV. At the end of the day, it's just about reaching more customers and how to share profits and costs. Make it watchable from any platform. Then the heat index will be more comparable. It will also help us customers who wanted to watch some drama but doesn't have subscription on 1 or 2 particular platform).

SPRING OF THE BLADE — TWO SHARP MINDS, ONE DANGEROUS GAME ⚔️❤️
What makes Spring of the Blade so enjoyable for me isn’t just the romance or the revenge—it’s watching two incredibly intelligent people enter the same dangerous game and realize that they may have finally met their match. The story begins with wounds from the past. Xie Qingyuan (Zhou Ye) returns to the Xie family determined to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death, while Shen Run (Xu Kai) has grown into a powerful, calculating man navigating corruption, family conflicts, and court politics.
And then their paths cross again.
What I absolutely LOVE is that neither of them is naive. They observe. They calculate. They hide things. They test people. And most importantly, they think.
Finally, a drama where intelligence doesn’t belong only to the male lead! 👏
Shen Run is clever, strategic, and sometimes frighteningly difficult to read. Xu Kai gives him that perfect mixture of control, danger, and hidden emotion. You’re constantly wondering how much he already knows and what his next move will be.
But Xie Qingyuan is never standing behind him waiting to be saved.
She is playing the game too.
And honestly, Zhou Ye is wonderful here. ❤️🔥
Her Xie Qingyuan is one of those female characters whose strength doesn’t need to be announced every five minutes. She has survived loss, hardship and a world where people constantly underestimate her, yet she remains sharp, resilient and emotionally alive.
She can be vulnerable without being weak.
She can love without losing her judgment.
She can accept help without surrendering her independence.
That balance is what I love about her.
And this is exactly why the romance works so well for me.
Shen Run isn’t attracted to a helpless woman he needs to rescue. He sees her courage and intelligence. Xie Qingyuan, in return, doesn’t simply fall for a powerful man—she watches him, questions him, challenges him, and gradually decides whether he deserves her trust.
Their relationship feels like two chess players slowly putting down their defenses. ♟️❤️
Sometimes they cooperate, sometimes they hide their cards, sometimes one understands what the other is planning without needing an explanation. There’s romance, but underneath it there is something I enjoy even more: respect between two capable people.
And the supporting cast deserves credit too. The Xie household is filled with characters carrying their own ambitions, secrets, and motives, which makes the family conflict feel like an actual web rather than background decoration for the leads. The acting across the ensemble gives those schemes, betrayals and shifting loyalties real weight.
That’s another thing I appreciate about this drama: the leads are smart, but the world around them isn’t stupid just to make them look brilliant.
For me, though, Xie Qingyuan is the heart of the story.
Zhou Ye portrays her strength beautifully—not as someone who never breaks, but as someone who can be hurt, fall, gather herself, and stand again.
And beside her is Shen Run: equally intelligent, equally complicated, and perhaps one of the few people capable of truly keeping up with her.
Blade and scabbard.
Two survivors.
Two sharp minds.
And two people who become stronger together without either one having to become smaller. ⚔️❤️
That is exactly the kind of power couple I love watching.

Blades that made Spring possible
I expected a regular revenge drama.Instead, "Spring of the Blade" turned out to be a story about "weeding out the remnants of an old, corrupt order and making way for something new"—wrapped in a character-driven suspense drama that gradually unfolds like a game of cards: some cards revealed, most hidden, every character holding their own hand, hiding their motives and bluffing about what they really know.
The basic plot is familiar enough: an honest official is schemed against by corrupt officials, his clan is exterminated; a woman is killed in the name of family honour; and the escaped children grow up carrying the consequences and seeking revenge.
Sounds familiar?!!What really sets this drama apart is the storytelling.
The drama constantly gives you just enough information to form a theory, while leaving enough unsaid to make you question it. Cryptic conversations, hidden motives, characters who rarely reveal everything they know, seemingly insignificant details that turn out to matter...almost every episode gave me something to chew on.
And what I particularly appreciated was that the mystery wasn't mysterious just for the sake of being mysterious. Everything eventually had an explanation. The major secrets were revealed, the loose ends were tied up, and the revelations remained logically consistent with the world the drama had built.
That made the rewatch especially satisfying. I watched all episodes and then went back and rewatched them. 😂 Knowing what I knew, so many earlier conversations and little details took on a different meaning.
The characters are another major strength. They are complex, layered, well-written and rarely as straightforward as they first appear.
Xie Shu is a particularly memorable villain—not because he looks or behaves like a stereotypical villain, but because he can appear perfectly reasonable while manipulating the people around him. The writing and the performance work beautifully together, especially through the subtle expressions and microexpressions. This is the kind of villain you can actually imagine encountering in real life.
The performances overall were powerful, with everyone bringing something to their complicated roles.
And then there is Xu Kai...a dream come true on screen.❤️🔥
The man had surprisingly little screen time and still managed to rule every scene he appeared in. ❤️🔥😍 Shen Run was such a complex character, often carrying several emotions at the same time, and Xu Kai portrayed all those layers beautifully. His expressions, microexpressions, the way his eyes conveyed what he couldn't say, his voice, the tonal shifts, his body language and sheer screen presence...and that voice ❤️🔥❤️🔥 just added another layer to it all. Everything came together so naturally that you could actually feel what was going on beneath the surface.
He somehow made every appearance impossible to look away from❤️🔥
FL, on the other hand, is where I felt the biggest disconnect. QY is actually a very well-written and genuinely complex character. I could understand her motivations, her guarded nature, her grief, her anger and the contradictions in her choices. But I didn't always feel all those layers coming through in Zhou Ye's performance as convincingly as I would have liked. In a drama where so many actors carried their complicated characters so strongly, ZY's inability to portray the role became particularly noticeable.
My other major criticism is the Shen family storyline. There are essentially two cases unfolding alongside each other, and while Xie Shu's side is fleshed out considerably, Shen Run's family history feels much thinner. I wanted more of that story—the relationship between his father and Xie Shu, what actually happened back then, and the events that shaped Shen Run himself.
The OST and BGM were another quiet strength. They were appropriate to the scenes and several pieces stayed memorable, amd many times carrying hidden subtexts.
And visually, this drama absolutely knew how to make an impact. Some episodes delivered grand, powerful sequences; others gave us pure shock value; and then there were the quieter moments where one cryptic line or tiny detail had me reaching for my imaginary detective board again😂 .
Honestly, almost every episode had something memorable—whether it was the visuals, the performances, the clues or the dialogue.
So yes, the basic revenge framework may sound familiar.
But "Spring of the Blade" is much more than its premise.
It is suspenseful without being incoherent, complicated without becoming incomprehensible, and romantic without making the characters' entire existence revolve around romance.
Romance for the heart❤️🔥
Mystery for the brain🔥
Schemes for the detective in me😂
"Spring of the Blade" gave me the whole package. It is a great example of how a seemingly familiar plot can be elevated through coherent storytelling, complex and well-written characters, and powerful performances.

was seated until it was ragebait...
updated review:I follow the main actors, that's why I was excited for this!
but what an awkward first episode! the story seemed very flat at first...
what did not help our FL is the weak initial vengeance trope... episode 1 starts the story at a random time: why her plan starts now? what does she know? why does she hate everyone so bad but has no clue what happened?
Eventually our FL grows in her role, by now (ep8) she is great, but i'm still not sure on her character: she is smart, weary, vengeful... but is she reckless? will the story always magically put her ahead of everyone and we dont know how? Good character depiction is also a production effort: can we see enough of her planning especially when things go wrong instead of plot armour? we don't get enough transparency in what is actually going on in the FL perspective, so for the viewer her actions just look random. sometimes she panics, sometimes she drops the best ruse... ?!
WHO IS SHE BEYOND HER REVENGE PLAN?
also i can say the same thing for ML!!
script is very revenge- plot intense, it looks like characters have nothing else to do so we don't have a lot to build around the revenge.
i usually like melodrama but the story twists much like ragebait.
beautiful cinematography and visuals...the aesthetic and world building is very nice but it still lacking richness ! i don't know yet if this drama will be memorable!
The ost is very dramatic and beautiful!
I'm following along for now, the story doesn't seem very complex: i am curious enough about the main couple to keep watching!
update: i am dropping it... this show has 2 GREAT episodes, and the rest was yoyo for me.

Spring of the Blade

[Update setelah nonton 27 eps]jujur kok makin ga jelas sih :( pusing dikit sm editannya😭🙏🏻 pdhl ep 14/15 udh oke banget.... :(
Pengambilan gambar cakep2, tapi entah kenapa kayak terlalu gelap?
