i am HOOKED, they got me!
watching this as a big fan of Zhou Ye and been waiting forever drama of Xu Kai...and right from the go, these two have been anything but FASCINATING, i am so enjoying this and i have definetly missed this type of dark aesthetic dramas...their chemistry is soooo amazing, i literally scream over the gestures and the glances, even tho it is not yet romance yet they look at each other....the plot is good so far, it is high paced from the start, no wasting time, and the two leads are extremely smart cunning individuals..
One scene i was absolutely captivated by was towards the end of ep 2, After Yan and Qingyuan fell into the river. The way they came back to Xie house...THE POWER WALK from both was Hot.......the exchanged glances, and the camera captured every subtle change in their expressions had me OBSESSED...The tension in that scene was INSANE----the LOOKS alone were saying EVERYTHING.
Another scene was when Qingyuan was getting beaten up by that IDIOTIC servant, and like badly beating up, and then that servant wanted to inject her with something, but THANK GODNESS to Yan Rui for coming at the right time, before she could do anything, he showed up and taught that ANT a lesson, immediately he got there, he gave a one DIRTY SLAP, omg, the rejoice that I yelled, i was beyond grateful and he picked Qingyuan up and rested her on his shoulders and ordered his assistant to also badly beat up the maid, real BADLY as well....i was so SATISFIED..it is as if he was literally conveying the viewers' feelings and emotions, prolly one of my favourite cdrama scene....

Strong storyline from beginning to end
Ive seen alot revenge storys this one the best ones usually its just the fl who wants but this time both leads. Whoever decided to pair xu kai and zhou ye together deserves high praise. Both actors strong but feed off of each and their chemisty was everything. The storyline we knew the father of xie family but damn his back story was shocker betraying his love and killing his best for power. The concubines and wife jealous is proof a man should have only one wife. I did end with second ml syndrome my hurt broke for li cong xin hopefully in the future xi zhen xu and zhou ye can do another drama together maybe a modern one its def chemisty there. The second sister is just like her mom married to someone who never will truly love and his second choice. Seeing bai shu and zhou ye back together in another drama to. The ending was powerful as shen rui and xie Qing got their revenge walking out the xie family as it catchs on fire. I was sad the eldest brother oFrom the xie family died though that hurt a bit. I highly recommend this drama it starts off slow but gets better every episode you wont who the true villians are til the end.

Well another one for 2026..
Wow. That storyline was a roller-coaster ride! Every time im about to hate someone the back story made me rethink about hating them lol omg that was crazy. Kudos to the writers! Well there was one character i hated from beginning to end.. her father. The actor played that role so well that you just wanted to reach into the screen and choke him lol beautifully done for the audience. The characters on this show were all so engaging.. you really get caught up in their back stories. I loved this role for Xu Kai.. i loved how he was such a red flag.. i wasnt used to seeing him in this kind of role.. i need more of this side of Xu Kai.. it was so bad ass! Im not a big fan of the FL but i liked this character for the most part for her.. it was consistent. She didnt start off being strong and weakened in the end like i noticed on her other dramas. She stayed herself the whole time. Which i liked. The storyline kept you on your toes making you think you figured out and then the writers throw curve balls and the plot twists AGAIN! If you are into these types of storylines complicated but pulls you in then this drama is for you.. highly recommend and would truly rewatch to see if there were easter eggs i missed 💜Was this review helpful to you?
Once you start the first episode, you’ll be hooked and compelled to watch the entire series.
Xu Kai and Zhou Ye were brilliant.
I highly recommend watching it...

A lot of twists...
It was good at first and then it just got boring. There's so many twists and turns that normally should make a show good but in this case after a while it just didn't land how it should've. It got tiring. After it started getting tiring I kept waiting for it to get good again and ultimately gave up watching this show. I don't see any enjoyment in continuing watching this.I was hooked in the first episode. Loved it by the second episode. It seemed to be an enemies to lovers kinda thing. Yan Rui was shown as this cruel man who killed a beggar. She doesn't like him at first and I couldn't wait for them to get to know each other and fall in love...
Honestly the amount of scandals this family has is absurd. In another historical drama, just one of these would make the whole family ashamed, some falling ill from anger or shame. It would have consequences. Emotional consequences as well as plot consequences. But? It all gets solved pretty quickly and is just a way for the story to reveal something and move onto the next thing. Yunya JUST GOT AWAY WITH IT. Why hadn't they married her off quickly?! Oh right. The mascot thing.
This is tagged "Married Life" and so I was expecting for one of the scandals to lead to that pretty quickly... NOPE.
And the "sisterly" dynamic was more tell than show. She was barely there. And the grandma, how is she making a living? Does she have savings? Isn't she poor?
ROMANCE --- where was it? Okay, ML saves FL a bunch. ML gets interested in her as a person who calculates. (Oh yeah, she's apparently a good schemer but by the 24th episode I'd almost forgotten that fact. Anyway...) FL only starts trusting him a bit. Starts thinking that ML reminds her of a childhood friend. Okay. WHERE is the romance? To me it really does seem one sided and then suddenly they are both in love. I didn't FEEL it.
Honestly? This is pretty forgettable. I'm struggling to remember some of the episodes. I don't feel anything for the villains -- not hatred or fear, just nothing. I don't care about them at all. And I think that was the first sign that I fell out of love with this show.
I first binged this and caught up around the episode 17 mark. I LOVED it then and eagerly waited for the next episode. But then a few episodes later, I accidently put this on hold. There was no urge to just immediately watch the latest episodes. I've been trying to watch this but I can't anymore. I ended up watching a whole drama and dropping another one in the meantime. I got to 6 minutes into episode 25 so, 24 full episodes of this. I should have dropped it sooner.
Acting: They did their best. I think it's poor writing. The sets and everything are fantastic. But the rest is just meh. Good at first but quickly fizzled out.
It had potential, though.

Fall of the Corrupt
Edit* I just finished this series and the final 5 episodes were horrible. I had to force myself to finish this series - it is way below the standards set by recent series and it does zero justice to this cast. The editing was horrible, the story just disintegrates and by the end I was just fast forwarding to finish it. I had zero attachment left for our leads. If you are on the fence, just jump over it and find something else to watch.This series was highly anticipated due to the amazing lead actors and supporting cast. I am not impressed and find this series wanting on a few different levels. The characters are one dimensional, almost all of them only have one thing driving them. There are no character arcs and we are 75% into the show. Well there was one tiny arc with one of the concubines but that is about it. The plot devices do not work here. Whether it is the writing for the screenplay, direction or editing etc it is choppy and disjointed. There is no suspense because the reveal comes a few minutes after the plot device is presented. We have scheming and relentless betrayal but there is nothing to offset that. Thus the entire show is off balance. The intrigue is about the only thing going. Who is the FL really? What was the truth. Compared to other series this one is lacking. It is still enjoyable but is a linear watch and shouldn't be compared to the leads other works. I enjoyed LOTFG and WOL much more that this and it is a shame because the leads are fabulous! The supporting cast is great too but the lack of dimension and the lack of counter balance makes it boring to watch. Even when our FL uses her wits, she is outwitted a second later. Also, in a way it is good that the FL is portrayed as only cerebral in her strategies and totally useless when it comes to physical defense. When she is being attacked, or targeted physically, she has zero defense and is completely reliant on other characters, ML, to save her. This is realistic in one way and also not in that if you are a cerebral fighter, then you will likely go down with a fight. But she just stands there. This may be a direction and timing problem. The tropes are highly used elsewhere so there is nothing original. I think this is the reason for the other low reviews. On its own it is okay but compared to other productions it is far below my expectations.

REVENGE
This is the first period drama of Xu Kai that I’m watching, and honestly, I’m already a big fan of his from his modern dramas. His characters are always powerful and influential, and this one is no different.The male lead is powerful, influential, and seemingly stone-hearted—the kind of person everyone fears and bows before. He carries this strong presence that makes it impossible not to pay attention whenever he’s on screen.The female lead is clever, calculative, and smart. You could almost call this a revenge drama for both the leads, as they each have their own reasons for wanting revenge.
I really enjoyed watching them help each other and work together to plan against their enemies. Their partnership was one of the things I liked most about the drama. That being said, I did find the female lead a little irritating at times because her revenge became so important to her that she sometimes came across as selfish. There were moments when it felt like she cared about her revenge more than anything else.
The storyline, though, is really good and definitely keeps you hooked. The costumes are beautiful, and the drama does a great job of keeping things interesting. There are twists and turns in almost every episode, so it never feels too slow or dragged out.
Overall, if you enjoy revenge stories with clever leads, scheming, and plenty of twists, this one is definitely worth giving a try.

Spring can't be this lacklustre
Okay, I have never given a series more than 5 episodes to see if it's for me or not; and I've given this 10. I can't anymore after having fast-forwarded too much.1. The good:
+ Art direction and set design are gorgeous and serene. I wonder if they filmed on location instead of in a studio. Some zoom-out and group shots are like paintings;
+ A very pretty cast. I didn't plan to watch this at all but was lured in by how good-looking these actors are, most noticeably the FL and second ML;
+ Filters are off;
+ Costumes are pretty nice.
2. The bad:
- The story and dialogues are bland, sluggish and inconvenient;
- The acting is... as "exciting" as the story. The expressions and delivery are wooden and sleep-inducing. Maybe the cast acted the best they could with what they were given. Maybe they are a terrible match made for one another;
- I can't even see any redeemable quality for the supporting cast. Usually, Chinese idol dramas are stacked with formidable veterans anchoring the acting department. It unfortunately didn't happen here... Such a shame.
- The make up and costumes of the two leads: I think(?) Xu Kai is a good-looking dude. But he looks really bad here. The Li and Pei young masters definitely look better than him. Same with Zhou Ye. She is someone I consider hit-you-in-the-face pretty and she is the prettiest here. But they make her look sloppy, especially the chin area and when her side profile is exposed. These shouldn't be the cases at all.
3. The terrible:
- The voice-acting or voice-over is dead, even more dead than any barely emotion expressed physically. For the first time, I understand the importance of voice dubbing in Chinese dramas. For the n-th time, I am convinced: There are barely a handful of commercial Chinese actors, trained or not, that can act with their voices.
- There's no chemistry among any of the cast;
- There's not even a drop of intrigue.
This set-up of how supposedly FL is a strong character and ML is a good official doubling as a corrupted, greedy one (and how the male characters adorn their hair with a helter-skelter of questionable ornaments) reminds me of "Flourished Peony". So, I watch some bits that I like again for some soothing.
I think both Xu Kai and Zhou Ye need to up their games, in both acting and choosing projects that fit their skill sets. They have been in the industry for quite a while now.
Conclusion: Pretty privilege is real. But I don't stick around for appearance alone. (Nevertheless, I lament the beautiful art direction and set design.)

ML and FL have fiery chemistry
From the get go you felt their chemistry. They are so drawn to each other. Especially him. He is smitten from the word go. And when he laid his eyes on her face to face, he is into her.She is more cautious. She has her agenda, her revenge she wants to enact and she doesn’t want anything to get in the way. So due to this, they have decided to fully trust each other but when they do need help, they do go to each other.
The storyline is gripping. We still figuring who the real bad guys are but there are plenty others to hate on.
Zhou Ye is doing such a great job enacting this intelligent, meticulous, and educated FL. She is not sweet, pampered, quiet and docile. And Xu Kai also has his agenda and isn’t afraid to make his presence known and using his authority to get his agenda forward. He is totally smitten with FL, and has a sixth sense to help her always.
Loving these two together. The chemistry between the leads are the highlight while the supporting casts are also doing their job well.

Zhou Ye and Xu Kai have more chemistry than the entire periodic table!
Initially, when this drama was announced and they cast Zhou Ye and Xu Kai as the leads, I knew right away I had to watch it. So, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to read the novel, and I’ll admit, I was a bit hesitant. The novel is a bit "slow-paced" with very little focus on romance, but later on, I learned the screenwriters would be making some changes, which put my mind at ease.
Shen Run was the character who surprised me the most. Xu Kai played him masterfully, and I must admit I was charmed by his seductive yet realistic personality, which is not the least bit off-putting. As for the female lead, Qing Yuan, she is just like in the novel: a young woman seeking revenge for her late mother, yet able to hide her true intentions, executing her vengeance without any remorse. Something very realistic about Qing Yuan is the fact that she cries out of anger. In some of her dialogues with the Nanny, a single tear would roll down her face, and I felt that brought a much more realistic touch to her character.
The cinematography and sets are perfect. The supporting characters are remarkable and deliver a very solid performance.
There are still many episodes ahead, but so far, this drama has completely won me over.

How far can good acting and hot actors justify how much enjoyment you get out of a subpar show?
I went into this with fairly high expectations, slogged through the first four episodes and then finally hit a point where I actually started to enjoy the makjang level logic that was fueling this fast and furious plotline.Some of the strong points,
♣︎ Xu Kai and Zhou Ye have excellent chemistry. They are definitely not the problem here. In fact, even the antaongists, including the limp bizkit Qingru did an A++ job of their character portrayals. Even Xie Shi was such a good actor. That unhinged laugh of his was just *chefs kiss*. Such good insanity.
♣︎ Beautiful costumes, wow I can't believe they were working on a shoestring budget because none of the characters dressed like they were hurting for funding.
♣︎ Absolutely beautiful cinematography, all things considered. I mean some shots kind of go slack, but over all, framing and composition of scenes were very thoughtful and artistic.
Now the dumpster fire,
♣︎ Plot. I mean, I guess it had the outlines of a plot. That is all that can be really said about it.
♣︎ Editing/Pacing/Continuity was SO janky. At some parts I could see how they were trying to withhold information for the sake of suspense, but it was really just a chaotic mishmash of beautiful shots and intensely dramatic music. A lot of critical things happened off screen. Shoddy plot writing and haphazard editing joined hands to create the perfect maelstrom of HoG maneuvers in which a lot of imperial edicts were passed around and then immediately discarded or like... blown away to the wayside. They literally Deus Ex Machina'ed their way out of EVERY major conflict. I thought Shen Run's fake out was justified by a coroner they bought off, but turns out that no he ACTUALLY asked Feng En to stab him in the chest... close to the heart but not quite! Like bruh, that's still a f**king major wound. How long would that take him out for? Six months? How did he go back to being so perky in like the next scene?
♣︎ Qingru's happy end. Why was she even a consideration at the end. She was mean, manipulative, petty and stupid. There was literally no character arc for her, but she got logistically, a better end than QY and SR because she still lives in that nice house, wearing those fancy ass clothes with the title of a Marchioness and now with a husband whom she literally cheated into marrying her. Did she even apologize to him? No, because that would mean making her work for her redemption arc. So stupid.
That extra three-four minutes could have gone into building out a post-intrigues life for Qingyuan and Shen Run who would have literally had to rebuild a life as like.. random plebes. How did that go for them?
Anyway, this show is good for... testin endurance. How far can good acting and hot actors justify how much enjoyment you get out of a subpar show? Well, now you can watch this drama and find out.

Excellent Final Reveal
While some had problems with this I did not .First of all the final and unique unforseen twists. Second , some of the individual acting scenes were excellent
One in particular from ( Miao Pu ) Xie Shu's 1st wife , but there are many. Watch out for them.
Yes , I accept some outcomes were a little slow to be resolved but the big secret was worth the wait.
The story is good as is the acting . The music score was decent . A relatively short drama . I'd definitely say it's worth the watch .
