A Steel Forest of Secrets and Regrets
I went into this expecting a straightforward crime thriller.What I got instead was emotionally repressed people, unresolved feelings, regret wrapped in layered timelines… and somehow, a romance that slowly sneaked up on me.
A missing police gun resurfaces. An old case starts breathing again. Three people tied to the same past find themselves pulled back into something none of them ever fully left behind.
At first, it feels like a classic investigation drama: interconnected cases, shifting timelines, clues slowly falling into place. But the deeper it goes, the clearer it becomes that this story is less interested in solving the mystery than in what that truth does to the people carrying it.
That emotional side ended up being what carried the drama for me.
The structure constantly moves between past and present, slowly connecting cases and relationships without rushing its reveals. Early on, the tension works really well. There is a real sense that everything matters, even before you fully understand why.
That said, the thriller side definitely softens in the second half. The timeline occasionally tangles itself more than necessary, and there are moments where the story feels like it could push harder. Instead of intensifying, it becomes more reflective. Whether that works for you will probably depend on what you came for.
If you want a high-stakes, razor-sharp crime thriller, this may feel too restrained.
If you can appreciate a quieter, character-driven drama hiding inside a crime story, there is a lot more here.
Jing Boran’s Jiang Han Sheng slowly became the emotional center for me. He is emotionally restrained to the point of almost feeling unreadable at first, but never empty. Jing Boran plays him through pauses, restraint, and the constant feeling that something heavier sits underneath what is being said. Early on, his colder, more manipulative tendencies can make him difficult to warm to, but the drama eventually gives him enough emotional depth to earn that redemption.
Wenjing Cai brings warmth and quiet emotional restraint to Zhou Jin, even if the writing occasionally leaves the character feeling more functional than fully explored. It feels like one of those performances where the actress had more to give than the script allowed.
And Qin Junjie’s Jiang Cheng genuinely surprised me. What could have easily become a forgettable “ex-lover” role instead lingers underneath almost every emotional beat of the story. Even in quieter moments, his presence subtly reshapes how you understand both the past and the present.
The romance also won me over far more than I expected.
It never pushes itself aggressively to the front. Instead, it builds through shared history, restraint, small gestures, and all the things left unsaid. Jiang Han Sheng and Zhou Jin are not built on dramatic declarations. Their connection works because it feels lived-in.
And Jiang Cheng’s presence adds emotional weight without turning things into a frustrating rivalry. The drama understands that some feelings do not disappear cleanly, and sometimes timing matters just as much as love itself.
The ending stays true to the tone the drama builds from the beginning: bittersweet, emotionally consistent, and more interested in quiet closure than easy comfort.
I’d rate this an 8/10. It is not the sharpest crime thriller, and viewers looking purely for suspense may find it too soft. But as a character-driven story about regret, damaged people, lingering feelings, and emotional restraint, it worked surprisingly well for me.
Also, Jing Boran as an emotionally repressed crime profiler earned this drama an extra half point on charisma alone.

A must watch!
This drama is definitely one of the best among those of its genre! I will start off by applauding how everything about it is consistent enough for one to be hooked on watching it from beginning till end. Despite being more saturated on the mystery and thriller side, there’s just the right amount of romance to give it a perfect balance without making it overwhelming or underwhelming.If you are wondering whether to watch it or not, here’s your sign to go for it! It really is that good. They really did justice to the drama through the casting, acting and storyline. If you are looking for a drama with a lot of fluffy romantic scenes this definitely isn’t the one🫠 It is more inclined towards the investigative, police department, crime scenes and suspense side.
A noteworthy point is how we are dealing with strong leads. Each of them had a background story which was heartbreaking and somewhat traumatic but the drama didn’t dwell much on that to sink the bigger picture rather, it was a stepping stone to allow the bigger picture to shine. Throughout the story you can clearly see how we are dealing with clever people, yes misunderstandings arose but they were quickly resolved, decisions were made rationally without clouded judgement.
The plot twists in this drama are bound to keep you glued to the screen as some unexpected and thrilling moments arise. A psychological tag should be added on the list because most parts of the story showed how it’s rooted in the psychological aspects of one’s life. The main highlight of the drama is how major events in the drama were drawn towards or due to psychological issues. Be it the villain’s tendencies, the male lead’s personality post traumatic events and even some side characters’ habit were greatly psychologically rooted.
There’s no single actor or actress l can pinpoint who failed to bring their respective character to life. What’s most impressive is how the whole cast portrayed their roles so precisely that one can actually be tagged along in the emotions they conveyed. Umm l hated to be one to say this but this drama’s main villain has to be the sassiest one l have seen so far! Zhao Xun absolutely nailed the double villain role without a doubt keeping us intrigued on what was in store for us next. I do not intend to spoil too much for you but the villain was brought to life in a top tier manner! Words cannot fully describe how Jing Bo Ran carried his role through all the rollercoaster emotional moments his character had to endure. Jiang Cheng’s story still left me with so many questions and emotions racing through my mind because it really progressed in an unexpected manner. The female lead took the script and said, “Hold my beer!” It’s impressive when a great and admirable fictional character is brought to life in a spectacular manner.
One thing that may make one skeptical about watching the drama is the relationship dynamics among the leads. At some point l too was frustrated on how the love story was going to unfold 😫 However, l like that as the story progressed and the truth unfolded everything became clearer. Be it the misunderstandings or confusion, it’s all justified and understandable😂. We were not left second guessing who’s who or what the female lead really wanted. It’s also refreshing to watch how the female lead was a decisive woman who did not have the tendency to lead someone on aimlessly. Out of all the relationships in this drama, Jiang Han Sheng and professor Wan had the most wholesome one! He really played a father figure to him throughout the drama in a really admirable manner.
Though romance is not an overly explored subject in the drama, l liked the relationship between Han Sheng and Jin, it wasn’t a sugar coated one. They didn’t take their marriage lightly regardless of how it started. Though it wasn’t puppy love, it’s the subtle details and acts they did between them which made their love story progression tear jerking. Initially, it was irritating how sometimes the male lead seemed to have low self esteem drawn from his and the female lead’s past experiences but l admire how they showed us both leads’ character development throughout the show. It’s plausible how by the end of the show we could clearly see how they had matured and grown through their past experiences blooming emotionally individually and as a couple. I like how the three leads dealt with their relationship maturely, putting what was important first before anything else!
Lastly, the ending was a cherry on top! “Among all the sunsets, secrets and regrets, l am glad l have you!”

A nice watch
I finally ended up watching it because of the confession scene which I though happened way later but it turned out to be the very first ep. A pleasant surprise might I add. But I was also worried because if a couple gets together this early on and it's 28 eps, for cdramas (iykyk), that means lotssss of unnecessary misunderstandings and drama. But this wasn't it. And it's also not a romance-focused drama, as you'll already see from the synopsis. Sorry for the long review ahead.First of all, it's a very realistic watch. As a psych graduate, the way they portray and explain emotions and human behavior is, while jargon heavy at some point, I understand the use because this is supposed to be somewhat a psychological type drama and it's nice to see. Some people might not agree with some things and the way main leads were acting at times but in my opinion, very realistic instead of just following the cliché predictable path of some idk blind heroic act trope or misunderstanding trope or whatever. All the characters have their own reasons for the way they act, good or bad or ambiguous (at least as someone who watched it from the pov of psych). And no, I don't think the FL was annoying in anyway. She was acting the way all humans would react, as you and I would react to situations she was in. There was a little bit of good cop/ bad cop and moral high ground stuff as it would in all police dramas, but it's necessary so I won't say much on it.
Secondly, the acting. I don't think anyone's acting was bad in this per se. They all did a good job. But I really have to applaud the portrayal of emotionally tortured Jiang Hansheng (ML) and Qi Yan. JHS's non reactive demeanor that become cold and stoic to shock and traumatic in literal seconds was well done. And then Qi Yan, don't get me even started. In all the scenes he appeared, he managed to disgust me and intrigued me by the way he portrayed his traumatized and twisted self so well. Jiang Cheng also did very well in the ways he showed the mind struggle of being inbetween 2 polar worlds. FL did okay, not much to say because her character isn't supposed to be as complex as the other main leads and is rather straightforward. She acted well in portraying moments of dilemma.
In conclusion, I didn't focus on any of the cons because I was preoccupied with the pros, And like another comment said, if you're looking for romance heavy, push and pull situations, this is not for you. But if you give this a chance, like me without having preconceived notions, you might find yourself surprisingly enjoying it. Overall, I liked it so much I finished this in 2 days. And this kinda pulled me out of the cdrama slump I was in with all these copy paste romance dramas these days.
Also Jing Boran was effing HOT. K thx bye.

A MUST WATCH!! CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE LEADS IS FIRE!!
I loved it so much I finished this in 2 days. And this kinda pulled me out of the cdrama slump I was in with all these copy paste romance dramas these days.One of the best cdrama I have ever seen. From casting to acting to story line everything is perfect. I was bored watching cdrama these days cause it was always about fairytale romance. The chemistry and tension between the lead is so much that butterflies in my stomach didn't even stopped for a second. The acting done my them was so good that I got so obsessed and finished watching the drama in 3 days. Even though I have my exams😭😭. Nothing more to say just one thing- A MUST WATCH CDRAMA!! Surprisingly good crime drama, with a PERFECT villain wow
I'll keep it short.I started this after seeing Jing Boran as the ML, and I've missed his acting. The first few episodes, I thought the story was mid but there seemed to be a lot of potential for the main couple. A few more episodes in, I realized the romance aspect is far from being the main genre of the drama. I'll be honest, I was considering dropping it. But the villain's story really drew me in. He is so perfect as the antagonist-- you can't help but hate his guts but also really admire the portrayal of the character. I was truly blown away by how perfectly he embodied a psychotic character. As the plot thickened, I found myself more invested in the story overall rather than just the main couple's relationship. JBR was also amazing of course, and has amazing chemistry with everyone, though I would like to see him in a more romance-centered drama.
Overall, I think this was a great blend of crime and romance. I'd say 70-30 respectively. Each episode gives more details and every now and then there was a reveal of things that happened. The back and forth flashbacks were a bit too common and hard to keep track of, and my hopeless romantic side wishes they showed more scenes of just the leads, but for a crime drama it was one of the better ones.

moving forward in the shadow of the past and making peace with it
I finished this drama a while ago and currently watching some parts to edit as a bookmark for myself. Overall the drama is good, I thought the C-Drama industry hadn't reached this level of film production (apparently I just didn't know hahaha). But this drama is a peak. However, I was a bit disturbed by their married life at first. It makes sense that the female lead can't move on from her ex, but her decision to accept the male lead's proposal was very hasty.I always feel sorry and guilty for what Jiang Cheng went through, I think he is the one who suffered the most. I hope he can live happily after what he has been through. I hope to see the punishment that Qi Yan gets for all the evil crimes he committed, but in this show it is not revealed, I think.

The Invisible Protagonist
"I just finished the last episode with a knot in my chest. The ex-boyfriend didn't want her back – he wanted her respect. And when he finally got it, he had to leave again. The husband is good, present, he loves her. But the chemistry, the history, the tension… all of that belonged to the past. And the worst part: the series forced the main couple after the revelation, like it was trying to convince us she made the right choice. But deep down, we know: the real story was his. Series balances romance and story very well
The show was well-paced and realistic in terms of its story telling. The romance and chemistry between the leads was on point! The slowly growing romance between the leads as they understand each other more was not realistic and despite the intensity of the main story (the serial killer), there was enough screen time for the couple for us to watch their relationship deepen!Also, the show did well in keeping me hooked onto the story and I liked the little twist towards the end, which constantly kept things fresh and exciting.
Unexpectedly wholesome also because it stood out to me how the leads take the time to really understand each other, rather than be quick to blame/ find fault.
10/10 would recommend! One of the few shows I have watched where there was true balance in the series - allowing viewers the opportunity to see different relationships and storylines develop and play out fully, without it feeling too short or rushed.

Good Script, terrible relationship.
The investigative storyline is excellent, and the characters have great depth—the acting is truly emotionally compelling. However, the way the relationship between the male and female leads is written is baffling. The male lead's stubborn attachment makes absolutely no sense; logically, no one would willingly wallow in the pain of seeing their wife fall for someone else—especially while still living together. Is he a sadist? It really ruins the viewing experience. If you wanted to write a melodramatic soap opera, they should have just done that instead of spoiling what could have been a great drama.Such a non sence

Excellent Psychological Thriller
This is an excellent psychological thriller. Everything about this series is so intriguing. If you can get past the violence of the first 4 episodes, the intrigue is amazing that I just continued watching. All the characters play such a great role and trying to figure out the true story behind the scenes is what makes this series interesting.Was this review helpful to you?
A Mediocre Soap Opera featuring Cops
1. Pacing is too slow2. Way too much makeup on both leads, sheesh! (The finally eased up 2/3rds of the way thru!)
3. Mediocre production values across the board. Direction, lighting, sets, costumes -- everything was subpar.)
4. MDL rating way too high
5. Female lead (Elvira) is a weak actress for such a complex role, seems lifeless too often -- and her performance drags down the more than capable ML. And she's ridiculously small and thin for the role. Yes, we see that high heeled boots with lifts.
6. The story has some nice twists, although most are predictable. The plot is the strength of this show, and it gets better as it goes. It's the only thing that got me to the finish line
7. Qin Jun Jie fans should watch this series because he steals the show. I suspect it was really his story all along.
8. This isn't a quality crime drama with MEH soap opera moments. This is actually a quality soap opera with MEH crime drama elements. So sometimes you'll see scenes that make no cop sense but instead romantic sense. If that makes you nervous, don't watch this series.
9. Joker fans will enjoy the villain, but more and more I see queer looking actors exploited as villains. Hmm.
10. The title annoyed me as a bad fit.
Overall I'd tell anyone to pass on this series.
