I wasn't expecting the romance to be so BIG

I did not think I would get SLS in this type of drama. I didn't go into this thinking it was a romance drama.
I watched this drama for the mystery and the thriller, especially all the psychological aspects of the storyline, which were amazing btw. The last thing I expected was to get heartbroken on behalf of the SML. I didn't read the synopsis or anything for this drama, I just went straight in, but with these types of storylines I have never found romance to be one of the bigger aspects of the drama until now.

I had such bad SLS for Jiang Cheng 😭. He was the best written character in the entire drama. I've watched a few other dramas staring Qin Jun Jie and I've always found him playing characters that seem like the SL but ends up being the ML, this is the first time seeing him actually be the SL and I hated it.

Jiang Cheng went undercover to find his best friends killer (his long term girlfriend and fiance at the time's brother). He was raised by Zhou Jin's family, he even calls her parents "mum" and "dad" as they were his parents long before they got together. He did everything he could to find out who killed essentially his brother, it took him a lot longer than he expected and he had to live a miserable and lonely life those 5 years just to get a lead on his case. I don't blame the FL for moving on after 5 years, if she waited just a little bit longer than everything would have been perfect for them. But, literally the year she married the ML (not out of love in her part, but more like an arranged marriage), she finds out Jiang Cheng is an undercover agent, that he never cheated in her and that he did everything to find her brother's killer. I genuinely don't hate Zhou Jin for moving on from Jiang Cheng, their break up was HORRIBLE. He set it up to seem like he was a heartless cheater in possession of drugs. She still waited for him for 5 years, despite thinking that he was trash she couldn't move on from, to the point that it kind of made me angry that she still held any feelings for a cheater. That is why despite how sad it is that they didn't end up together, I get it.

Jiang Hansheng was great, a good love interest and his storyline with the villain was good. The villain was obsessed with Hansheng in the sense that the guy literally wanted to torture Hansheng to death. Habsheng was really good at annoying the villain in order to destroy the villain, whilst Jiang Cheng was good at getting close to the villain and destroying them from the inside out. Both MLs had a very different way of going about their mission and it was very interesting to see how these two characters with essentially the same goal go about it.

In the romance aspect, Jiang Cheng storyline was a LOT better and made more sense. The Jiang Hansheng had a huge crush on the FL even though he hardly knew her and interacted with her only twice as a child. His immediate love for the FL was weird AF (if this was any other drama people would call it a toxic obsession), he hardly knew her and was chasing after her for years and literally stalking her (he admitted this). Jiang Cheng and the FL had a better storyline, their love for each other made sense, they knew each other their entire lives, from best friends to lovers. Jiang Cheng as a character made sense, everything he did and why he did was realistic considering his background with the FLs family, but the MLs obsession made no sense. Zhou Jin and Hansheng together were really good, they were never toxic or anything. I am not saying they were a bad match, it's just their story starts off weird but at the end they are really good together and Hansheng was genuinely a huge green flag for her. He knew what he was getting into when he married Zhou Jin, he knew she was still not over Jiang Cheng at the start and that she did not marry him out of love.

A nice watch

I finally ended up watching it because of the confession scene which I though happened way later but it turned out to be the very first ep. A pleasant surprise might I add. But I was also worried because if a couple gets together this early on and it's 28 eps, for cdramas (iykyk), that means lotssss of unnecessary misunderstandings and drama. But this wasn't it. And it's also not a romance-focused drama, as you'll already see from the synopsis. Sorry for the long review ahead.

First of all, it's a very realistic watch. As a psych graduate, the way they portray and explain emotions and human behavior is, while jargon heavy at some point, I understand the use because this is supposed to be somewhat a psychological type drama and it's nice to see. Some people might not agree with some things and the way main leads were acting at times but in my opinion, very realistic instead of just following the cliché predictable path of some idk blind heroic act trope or misunderstanding trope or whatever. All the characters have their own reasons for the way they act, good or bad or ambiguous (at least as someone who watched it from the pov of psych). And no, I don't think the FL was annoying in anyway. She was acting the way all humans would react, as you and I would react to situations she was in. There was a little bit of good cop/ bad cop and moral high ground stuff as it would in all police dramas, but it's necessary so I won't say much on it.

Secondly, the acting. I don't think anyone's acting was bad in this per se. They all did a good job. But I really have to applaud the portrayal of emotionally tortured Jiang Hansheng (ML) and Qi Yan. JHS's non reactive demeanor that become cold and stoic to shock and traumatic in literal seconds was well done. And then Qi Yan, don't get me even started. In all the scenes he appeared, he managed to disgust me and intrigued me by the way he portrayed his traumatized and twisted self so well. Jiang Cheng also did very well in the ways he showed the mind struggle of being inbetween 2 polar worlds. FL did okay, not much to say because her character isn't supposed to be as complex as the other main leads and is rather straightforward. She acted well in portraying moments of dilemma.

In conclusion, I didn't focus on any of the cons because I was preoccupied with the pros, And like another comment said, if you're looking for romance heavy, push and pull situations, this is not for you. But if you give this a chance, like me without having preconceived notions, you might find yourself surprisingly enjoying it. Overall, I liked it so much I finished this in 2 days. And this kinda pulled me out of the cdrama slump I was in with all these copy paste romance dramas these days.

Also Jing Boran was effing HOT. K thx bye.

No Expectations, Ended Up Obsessed

Did I start this show with high expectations? No. Did I end up loving it? Yes.

I went into it after only seeing a few edits of the main couple and a lot of hate toward the actress. But what stood out to me immediately was their chemistry, so I started it without expectations—and I absolutely loved it. Honestly, I wish I could erase my memory just to watch it again. It’s one of those very exciting, thrilling shows that is incredibly bingeable.

For me, the highlight of the drama was definitely the main couple. Their chemistry was amazing—easily the brightest and strongest aspect of the show. I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions about their relationship, but I personally loved it. I was expecting a lot of drawn-out misunderstandings, especially because of her ex, but I’m so glad that didn’t happen. The conflicts were handled and resolved properly without unnecessary dragging.

Regarding the female lead, I know she received a lot of hate, but I genuinely understood her character and didn’t hate her at all. She was driven by revenge, but she was also someone who had lost her brother and her first love, which deeply shaped her actions. I loved that by the end, she was decisive about what she wanted. Even when her heart wavered, she never betrayed her husband, and that was something I really appreciated.

I also liked that her feelings toward her ex weren’t just romantic. He was family too—he was adopted by her father, so she grew up seeing him as a brother. That complexity made her inner conflict more understandable. Once the truth came out, she had no reason to hate him. If she hadn’t been married, she might have ended up with him, but she was married, and she felt safe with her husband. That’s why I didn’t hate her scenes with her ex. At the end of the day, she chose her husband, never betrayed him, and was honest with Hanshang.

I loved how her relationship with Hanshang developed. She gave him—and herself—a chance to love, even though she didn’t love him at first. She still tried, even before everything fully unfolded. Their scenes together had so much intensity and “fire.” I especially loved how he was the one chasing her at first, pushing her to love him, and then the roles reversed, and she became the one saying, “Let me love you.” That shift was amazing to watch. Even the divorce moment—I didn’t hate it, because it allowed us to see her run after him.

Jing Boran’s portrayal of romance was incredible. The way he looks at her, the way he melts into her presence—it genuinely felt like he was breathing her in. His acting is a big reason why the couple worked so well. His obsession, protectiveness, and dedication were portrayed beautifully. I loved all the small details—him always running to her, protecting her, the little moments like when she takes off his glasses.

The female lead’s acting was also very good. Especially in emotional and heavy scenes, like crying scenes, she delivered really well. She portrayed someone broken, torn, and exhausted by everything, and I think she did that in a very convincing way.

Jing Boran, though, was on another level. His portrayal of someone dealing with PTSD and anxiety was incredible. I especially appreciate how he plays “cold” characters—he never feels distant from the audience. Instead, he fully becomes the character. I also loved his interactions with the psychopath; the way he played those scenes was so engaging.

As for the ex, I didn’t hate him or his presence in the story. I actually felt really bad for him. He sacrificed so much, probably the most out of everyone, and when he returned, he had lost everything. It was sad, but I appreciated that by the end, there was no bad blood between them. The actors did a great job portraying this dynamic.

The entire cast was strong. Everyone delivered exactly what they were supposed to. I also think Qi Yan deserves special recognition—his portrayal of the psychopath was incredible. It was extremely believable, especially in the serial killer aspects. His dynamic with Hanshang was one of the highlights in terms of tension and acting.

Plot-wise, even without the romance, the show was gripping from the start. I personally love stories involving serial killers, thrillers, and psychological elements, so this really worked for me. It kept me curious, wanting to understand the characters and their dynamics. It was easy to follow, which is important for this kind of story.

My main complaint would be the ending for the villain—I wanted it to be harsher. It felt a bit unsatisfactory. I wanted him to suffer more, maybe face deeper consequences or even confront his past in a more impactful way.

However, I did like that the female lead was able to see what Hansheng went through at the end. It made sense for her to fully understand him moving forward and be there for him, just as he had always been there for her.

I also never really saw the male lead as “obsessive” in a negative way—I saw him more as protective and possessive, which made sense given their past and how she had always protected him.

Some honorable mentions go to Professor and Chief Tan—their scenes added a sense of family and lightness that balanced the heavier aspects of the show.

Of course, others might notice flaws, but for me, the couple’s chemistry carried everything. Their acting was incredible, and the story itself was engaging. It also reminded me a bit of Flower of Evil.

Another small complaint: the ending credits showed deleted scenes, and I couldn’t find them anywhere. That was frustrating because I would have loved to watch them.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama. It’s fast-paced, gripping, and has amazing chemistry. It exceeded my expectations, especially since I didn’t see many people talking about it. It’s definitely one of my favorite dramas of 2026 so far. Lately, a lot of shows feel repetitive or more focused on visuals than well-written romance, but this one stood out to me.

I would definitely recommend it—especially if you go into it understanding the female lead’s character instead of judging her too quickly.

From casting to acting to story line everything is perfect. I was bored watching cdrama these days cause it was always about fairytale romance. The chemistry and tension between the lead is so much that butterflies in my stomach didn't even stopped for a second. The acting done my them was so good that I got so obsessed and finished watching the drama in 3 days. Even though I have my exams😭😭. Nothing more to say just one thing- A MUST WATCH CDRAMA!! Surprisingly good crime drama, with a PERFECT villain wow

I'll keep it short.

I started this after seeing Jing Boran as the ML, and I've missed his acting. The first few episodes, I thought the story was mid but there seemed to be a lot of potential for the main couple. A few more episodes in, I realized the romance aspect is far from being the main genre of the drama. I'll be honest, I was considering dropping it. But the villain's story really drew me in. He is so perfect as the antagonist-- you can't help but hate his guts but also really admire the portrayal of the character. I was truly blown away by how perfectly he embodied a psychotic character. As the plot thickened, I found myself more invested in the story overall rather than just the main couple's relationship. JBR was also amazing of course, and has amazing chemistry with everyone, though I would like to see him in a more romance-centered drama.

Overall, I think this was a great blend of crime and romance. I'd say 70-30 respectively. Each episode gives more details and every now and then there was a reveal of things that happened. The back and forth flashbacks were a bit too common and hard to keep track of, and my hopeless romantic side wishes they showed more scenes of just the leads, but for a crime drama it was one of the better ones.

moving forward in the shadow of the past and making peace with it

I finished this drama a while ago and currently watching some parts to edit as a bookmark for myself. Overall the drama is good, I thought the C-Drama industry hadn't reached this level of film production (apparently I just didn't know hahaha). But this drama is a peak. However, I was a bit disturbed by their married life at first. It makes sense that the female lead can't move on from her ex, but her decision to accept the male lead's proposal was very hasty.

I always feel sorry and guilty for what Jiang Cheng went through, I think he is the one who suffered the most. I hope he can live happily after what he has been through. I hope to see the punishment that Qi Yan gets for all the evil crimes he committed, but in this show it is not revealed, I think.

Good Script, terrible relationship.

The investigative storyline is excellent, and the characters have great depth—the acting is truly emotionally compelling. However, the way the relationship between the male and female leads is written is baffling. The male lead's stubborn attachment makes absolutely no sense; logically, no one would willingly wallow in the pain of seeing their wife fall for someone else—especially while still living together. Is he a sadist? It really ruins the viewing experience. If you wanted to write a melodramatic soap opera, they should have just done that instead of spoiling what could have been a great drama.

"I just finished the last episode with a knot in my chest. The ex-boyfriend didn't want her back – he wanted her respect. And when he finally got it, he had to leave again. The husband is good, present, he loves her. But the chemistry, the history, the tension… all of that belonged to the past. And the worst part: the series forced the main couple after the revelation, like it was trying to convince us she made the right choice. But deep down, we know: the real story was his. Series balances romance and story very well

The show was well-paced and realistic in terms of its story telling. The romance and chemistry between the leads was on point! The slowly growing romance between the leads as they understand each other more was not realistic and despite the intensity of the main story (the serial killer), there was enough screen time for the couple for us to watch their relationship deepen!

Also, the show did well in keeping me hooked onto the story and I liked the little twist towards the end, which constantly kept things fresh and exciting.

Unexpectedly wholesome also because it stood out to me how the leads take the time to really understand each other, rather than be quick to blame/ find fault.

10/10 would recommend! One of the few shows I have watched where there was true balance in the series - allowing viewers the opportunity to see different relationships and storylines develop and play out fully, without it feeling too short or rushed.

Combination of serial murders and drug related crime
Jiang hangseng is really nice character play well by JBR, thig guy really can act. He made me feel so sorry for all the things he had to suffer and I glad he has a chance to get the happiness with zhou jin.
One scene that really made me cried when his teacher said how the murdered ruin his best student🥹🥹

Until the end I keep guessing who is the mole in the police, never though their own friends.

Zhou Jin is really rational and she know how to control herself. Even though it quite distracted when she wary with Jiang cheng but she still know who her priority

For jiang cheng, he also good and his story quite heartbreaking. He is good man and never forced zhou Jin

In overall this drama is good one and especially with Jiang hangseng encounter with the qiyan. Really like the physiological tension between them.
