Like the title said, you just need some perseverance to finish this and perhaps you might find that the series is not that bad after all. Lol. Frankly, it gives almost, if not one of the best endings so far in the history of costume dramas. Lol. Apart from giving us a child by the end of it, the ending was so lovey dovey and satisfying to watch. Love it!

The plot. Well. It was quite a fresh theme, usually we just see the lead being transmigrate into the story and off they go taking the place of the character and there is that. However, in this, the element of transmigration is kept on being main focus in the plot until the end. It needs quite a while for me to enjoy it, especially since the FL seems to be quite focus on it and hard-headedly rejecting the ML because of it and it kills us as viewers and some might drop this halfway due to the frustration. Lol. But looking at it from the FL’s view, of course she would be quite hardheaded, i mean, the ML quite literally breaks her heart, used her, stab her in the back and screw her sister before making her a human swine (second time watching this being used after scum villain system lol), so it was quite understandable for her to refuse Nang Heng at first. But the plot also brings a lot of laugh as well. So many funny things happened and it was basically a comedy drama. Haha. However, the plot for CGH almost had me coughing blood in rage i swear to god that character irks me so much with no redemption until the end. I also would like to string the emperor’s feet to a torture device at first (he was basically the most unjust ruler and father so far in the history of emperor father) but at least he changed lol. Some plots was half baked like the plot of NH looking for Qianyu’s Army method for sword welding and i always find the plot having 2 different army in the capital doesnt make much sense, especially if the emperor’s army is not that established it seems

Nang Heng was Nang Heng, and of course LYN did splendid in his role as authoritative loving prince (and oh my, he was good at being those) who is secretly a puppy in disguise when in love. Lol. I did watch LYT before but it was in Glory of the Special Force, and her role there was not quite much, so basically this is my first drama of hers as FL, and tbh, she was almost a carbon copy of Bailu in my eyes, cant believe they look so much alike! Her acting is fine, she did well in comedy and crying scenes (even though Song Yimeng almost always cried while scolding NH during the sad scenes. Lol. Like Song Yiting and Shangguan He’s characters, it was refreshing not to have an annoying second FL, instead we got a smart and supportive one.

OST was of course chef kissed, especially the one of LYN’s. Totally keeping the vibe of the scenes each time. The costumes were all an eye candy, be it for the main leads or for the supporting casts, seems like they have a high budget for it. I especially like the costumes for Nang Heng, super luxurious and godlooking

This drama is uniquely beautiful.

I love this drama
Cast and acting are so good. It is heartwarming, funny, heartbreaking and thrilling at the same time. FL makes me so mad at first but eventually her character is relatable as a modern person. Nan Heng, the ML, is such a good actor and he portrays the emotions really well. All supporting actors also did an exceptional work! The ost is sp sweet and i love the warm it gives at the end. I feel sad for General Chu because he deserves to be loved too but our choices definitely shapes our future so his ending is understandable. Kodus to all the staff behind this successful film. Wish to see more of the characters' story in the modern world.

P.s. to be loved by someone like Nan Heng is so precious. Everyone deserves that unconditional love.

Best drama this year so far!!

Love this drama so much. So funny, it's like a breath of fresh air from same old themes. Love both leads as well. Some of you may dislike the FL, but girl, her actions are justified. She's just trying to protect herself and her family from events that are bound to happen as portrayed in the original script.

As for both actors, a job well done. Of course, THE Liu Yuning, what else can I say and Li Yitong! She pulled Song Yimengs character so well. Comedy is also for her haha

Right now, I can't move on from this drama haha Even LYN said on his livestream that he cant move on from ADWAD and it ruined it for him. This drama set the bar so high that when he read other scripts, he just cant help himself to compare. So yup, this drama is highly recommended!!!

Defying the Narrative with the Absolute Cheat Code: Ultimate Flow | When FLs logic has left the chat

Honestly, I don't know where or how to start my review of this drama. I’m torn on what to write. I get the logic behind the plots and the necessity of the conflicts, but they still frustrate me. No matter how hard I try to understand their reasoning, it still continues to annoy me. One thing I have realized is that it is truly tough to remain objective and impartial at all times—even when the reasons seem justifiable—because not all problems can be categorized as simply right or wrong. Sometimes, both sides have a point, and it comes down to us as viewers to choose which one we are going to support. All I want to say is, this show gave me such an intense viewer's dilemma that I was unable to decide how to ultimately feel about it.

The storyline was great! The first 10 episodes are effortlessly hilarious. While the script may seem like the usual metafiction trope at first, the more I watched, the more I realized how different it is from other dramas in the same genre. ​It features an innovative style of writing that I personally haven’t seen before. The writing made me laugh my ass off because of how absurd the scenes and sequences are, while simultaneously making me realize there are still many areas within the metafiction theme left to explore. This drama successfully ventured into those areas in a ridiculously comical, fresh, and new way.

The most questionable part of this story—and what I consider the ultimate plot hole—is the entire Li Shiliu trope. It started in Episode 6 and dragged on until Episode 23. While I understood the initial purpose of this plot point, I cannot fathom how they had the nerve to extend it for 18 episodes. I would have accepted it if it had lasted a maximum of 10 episodes, but 18? Who are they kidding? The Female Lead is supposed to be a modern-day person—someone who is typically portrayed as observant and sharp. So I can’t understand how the writers expected us to believe she was fooled by a mere mask that only covered part of the Male Lead's face. It is impossible to accept that she failed to recognize him through his eyes and voice alone, especially considering how many times he wasn't even wearing his oversized dark hat. I remember questioning the writers by Episode 9 and becoming genuinely annoyed by Episode 15 when the FL still hadn't realized who Li Shiliu truly was. It's one thing that this "can't recognize a half-masked man" trope even existed in this genre in the first place, but prolonging it that much was another. It really was an unbelievable stretch.

By Episodes 23-32, I was introduced to the most complex situation I have ever been in while drama watching. It was a mixture of frustration toward the FL for taking a significant amount of time to recognize Li Shiliu's true identity, and annoyance over her reaction after finding out the truth. I was conflicted about how to process this part, as I have already painted the FL as not discerning enough for not realizing who Li Shiliu was much earlier in the show. At the same time, I am torn because I also want to acknowledge and validate her feelings of betrayal and disbelief—that she was fooled—but I can't entirely do so because it's mainly her lack of discernment that caused it.

I understand that Li Shiliu was created because, without him, the FL (Song Yimeng) would not develop affection for and break her prejudice against the ML (Nan Heng). However, I just can’t help the urge to blame her; she wouldn't have been fooled if only she wasn't so complacent and had been more observant of the people and situations around her in the first place. She should have been doubtful and skeptical of the changes when Li Shiliu, who was non-existent in the original script, suddenly appeared. Instead, she just treated it lightly until it backfired on her.

The thing here is she's been overly self-trusting and confident that she knew everything; so when she finally learned the truth, I find it hard to validate her feelings no matter how hard I want to. I tried, but I simply wasn't able to empathize with her anger—gaslighting and painting the ML as bad for lying—because it wasn't the ML (Nan Heng/Li Shiliu) fault that her expectations wasn't met and the original script wasn't entirely followed.

On the contrary, I find it outrageous that she's mad and resents the ML for hiding his identity from her when she's been acting smart all this time, yet it took her 18 episodes to blow his disguise. I understand that her know-it-all attitude may seem reasonable because she knows the whole story's plot, but everything still boils down to the root cause of this issue, which is her inability to identify the similarities between Li Shiliu and Nan Heng. Like gurl! I want nothing of this self-inflicted drama of yours. lol

I have a lot more to say on this, but I'll summarize by saying: the fact that she's from the modern world yet fails to immediately notice the similarities between Liu Shiliu and Nan Heng is a massive flaw. I’m struggling to digest this. It drags the story down and, in my opinion, represents the biggest plothole in the series. It likely goes unnoticed by viewers who are just caught up in the romance or the visuals, but I simply can't ignore it. For a modern character to be that unobservant feels completely unrealistic.

Finally, down to the climax and ending. I was low-key very proud of Song Yimeng for overcoming that long emotional and dramatic slump. God knows how much of a relief it was when she finally came back to her senses—after spending almost 10 episodes pondering over everything—to fight back and counter the evil plan against them. I must say that I still love her being all cheerful, mischievous, and clever in comparison to her depress state.

One thing I am extremely satisfied with regarding this show is how they deal with the antagonist through the use of the greatest plot device—unlimited flow. Seeing them plan things out after a scene reset, failing, then coming back again and again stronger and more equipped was satisfying. It was an ending that was fitting for this story's crazy plot. Everything aside, I just want to state here how I find the scene between Song Xiaoyu and Nan Feng (the modern-day male and female leads) at the end utterly questionable, but I will let it pass for the sake of not ruining my mood for the show.

P.S. I don’t know whether to laugh or not, given how blatantly they hit us with the reason the show is called 'A Dream within a Dream' at the very end. Haha!

Story - 9.0, I actually loved it and was amazed by their take and how they navigated the metafiction trope. It honestly would have been perfect if they hadn't fumbled and ruined it with the 'modern-day FL can't recognize a half-masked ML' agenda, and the FL lashing out after finding out the truth—which happened because of her own incompetence and poor discernment. Aside from those points, everything else worked for me. I even loved the antagonist's (Chu Guihong) characterization. I usually hate the 'kind 2nd male lead turned villain' trope, but they set him up brilliantly.

Acting - 10, I’ve been thinking about the performances of the leads and the supporting cast, and I honestly can't find a "bad apple" among them. Perhaps it’s because the show has such a light, fun, and comedic vibe that I wasn't bothered by the acting at all. Since I went in expecting funny and ridiculous performances, I treated it more like an entertaining comedic skit than a heavy drama that needs to be nitpicked. All in all, the cast executed their roles in perfect alignment with their characterization and the show's energy. Additionally, while I’ve watched Li Yitong before, this is the first time I’ve fully appreciated her beauty. Her look—modern casual pants, a sleeveless crop top, a loose button-down long sleeves shirt, and messy hair—was an incredible combo. She looked gorgeous and truly stunning.

Music - 10, A job well done to the music team of this show! I love each song and gosh! I was squealing with excitement when they randomly used the 'A Journey to Love' OSTs. I was literally on the floor laughing out of mere shock and joy! I feel like they used it as an homage and also to make things fun, as some of the scenes have a similar vibe to AJTL. And come on, Liu Yuning is here! Totally love it!

Rewatch Value - 8.0, I’m giving it this rating because, although I enjoyed the drama, it frustrated me by challenging logic and narrative coherence. I don't appreciate how the writers sacrificed the FLs characterization just to make the plot work. It was a truly unwise and poorly executed move.

Overall - 9.0, I know I voiced some discontentment earlier. The logic behind the FL was questionable, sure, but the scenes were well-executed and kept the plot moving. It was an enjoyable watch, even if the lack of coherence hurt the female lead’s characterization once you look closely. On the other hand, I have to praise those smooth, impeccable transitions—the editing team nailed them.

Best OST award goes to ...

This looked like so much fun when it was airing, and I finally watched it too now! What I loved the most were probably the female lead’s dresses and overall styling – it was IMMACULATE. Tens across the board. Her clothes and hair were always intricate, detailed, and so stunning, wow. Another thing I loved was the soundtrack. The instrumentals really turned so many scenes into highlights, I love listening to it (as I am right now as I am typing this 🤭🤭). The show was also genuinely very funny and I think that Li Yi Tong delivered her devastating scenes perfectly – as did Liu Yu Ning!

The only thing is that I wasn’t as emotionally attached to the plot, so even though I was empathizing with the male lead (because everyone treated him so unjustly!), I did not really cry with him. However, this was a GREAT performance from Liu Yu Ning, he has the subtle eye acting down and does yearning just so well… 🥹🤭 (though I AM biased when it comes to him lol).

There were some things in the show that were handled badly though (or not at all). The emperor switching up on Nan Heng and making him Crown Prince was… weird. All of a sudden, his behavior was civil, basically loving, while his previous hatred towards the male lead was so irrational (like, why is he blaming a NINE-year-old boy for the death of his beloved empress? Makes no sense). The second thing that left a really bad taste in my mouth is Song Yi Ting sexually harassing Li Shi Liu/Nan Heng and staging a scene that suggests they were intimate in order to decide her marriage herself. This is wrong for obvious reasons as she drugged Nan Heng, undressed him and then herself… and this was NEVER mentioned ever again? She never apologized to him?! She actually wanted Shan Guan He (due to his cosplay as Li Shi Liu), but this doesn’t make this whole situation less rapey! And since they never cleared this whole thing up, her mother ended up being so rude towards Nan Heng after he got married to Song Yi Meng! That lady fully on thought he was a rapist?? And the show didn’t think to clear this up? So weird.

Overall, this show was fun and visually pleasing! The OST is stunning and honestly one of the most intricate and best soundtracks of the year for me! The characters could be quite irritating at times (yes, you, Song Yi Meng! AND especially Chu Gui Hong), and the whole Li Shi Liu/Nan Heng mystery took some time for SYM to finally uncover, and THEN it took time for her to finally be with Nan Heng (like damn, the patience Nan Heng and I had to exert…). But, you know, at least we get a double happy ending, so it’s okay, I guess!

Excellent in everyway

This is the first time I've given a full 10 for a drama . I am relatively new to cdrama and not writing in support of any idol I am

Get through the first 3episodes, take it as a comedy,and it will get serious. Just relax and laugh with it

It shows that if you have been brainwashed and firmly stuck to a preconceived idea, you will be blind to all possibility and reasoning

The plot is really twisted and unpredictable. It'takes a genius scriptwriter to put it altogether and even able to put in lots of comedic twists while showing the essence of love, brotherhood and Wuxya honor

The actors are absolutely excellent especially the FL. The comedic timing,the various level of deliberate "fake coyness"and "acting within acting"is spot on. The ML too is excellent in delivery even behind a mask, using only his eyes and posture for different demeanour

The director and editing is excellent to weave various scene together without any draggy moments. Every episode is self explanatory and exciting

If you take it as a comedy and allow for some tongue in cheek moments , you will forgive some comedic moments, just take it for a laugh, don't take it too seriously and you will enjoy it but I can guarantee you the story and the plot is deadly serious and deep

I highly recommend this drama. Those bad commentators have not grasped the deeper aspect of the story and only understood very superficially

When Comedy Turns into Coercion and Harm is Framed as Love

The trailer for A Dream Within a Dream promised a blend of sharp humor, intrigue, and fantasy flair — and with Liu Yuning in the lead, expectations were high. His past dramas have delivered both quality and emotional depth, so I settled in anticipating another hit. The first few episodes didn’t disappoint: hilarious scenes, chaotic disguises, clever banter, and a witty female lead.
I was hooked.

But somewhere along the way, the tone began to shift — and not in a good way.

The show leaned heavily into gas-lighting, coercion, and guilt-tripping, especially from ML towards the FL.
His desperation, shaped by childhood abandonment and unhealed wounds, was real—but the way the story romanticized it was not. His fear of losing the one person who’d shown him kindness quickly turned into obsessive control.
Emotional pressure, confessions laced with guilt, and a sense of entitlement to love were packaged as passion.
FL Song Yimeng, was systematically stripped of her agency, gaslit and coerced by the ML and this was framed as romance.

A big part of the early charm came from the dynamic between the FL and the ML’s masked identity. But over time, what started as intrigue slowly blurred into manipulation. The show leaned into that ambiguity without fully addressing its emotional cost, which made the unfolding relationship feel increasingly uneasy.

This show is known for parodying common tropes, and the background music clearly signals the humor. But unfortunately, the emotional abuse patterns weren’t framed as parody — they weren’t treated like a trope. Instead, the abusive ML was suddenly reframed mid-drama as a lovable, wounded hero. That’s where the cognitive dissonance hit hard. Framing harm as love just doesn’t sit right.

One of the few bright spots was the second couple. Shangguan He and Song Yiting were charming, grounded, and refreshingly different. Their relationship brought humor and warmth. A welcome contrast to the heavy-handed emotional entanglements elsewhere.

There were moments of brilliance, like the rare glimpses into 2ML Chu Guihong’s inner world—his grief, his loyalty, his silence.

And the drama had something to say about loneliness, power, and the hunger to be understood. But those threads were buried under a love story that mistook trauma bonding for destiny.

Visually, the drama remained polished throughout. The cinematography was consistently striking. Even as the emotional arc felt off, the visual storytelling stayed sharp and atmospheric.

The OST matched the tone shifts — comedy, lyrical, haunting.

If they’d just owned it as a ‘FL falls for the villain’ trope, it honestly could’ve been a 10/10 for me.

I've watched 32 out of 40 episodes.

The first five minutes of this drama had me gasping for breathe. The stabbing triangle scene had me laughing so hard I ended up on the floor. The rest of the drama was charming and fun but that first scene totally eclipsed the whole show. I basically never recovered—it's easily the funniest and most memorable scene from this drama.

The plot was plotting but the relationships and character progression needed a lot more, especially with the female lead Song Yimeng. I understood why Yimeng didn't trust Nanheng, especially after he tried to kill her so many times, but that plot trope dragged on for way too long. It hindered Yimeng's character development and as the main character, it dragged the whole story down. There were times she was unbearable. I wish she had been smarter or stronger or just more easily likeable.

Liu Yining's Nanheng was great in contrast. His character growth in romantic ventures and with comedy were really working for me. The rest of the characters were all generally likeable and served the plot well.

I think this really would have been a 10/10 banger if the writers had focused more on Yimeng's development.
