Stubborn female lead, pitiful male lead - an enjoyable rollercoaster
Despite my issues with the FL at some point, I had pretty much fun watching this. There's a big bunch of very likeable characters that make the watch really easy. Plus, the costumes and even more the settings are very, very pretty! It was nice that some seemingly insignificant side characters actually grow various facets as the story moves on and becomes interesting, i.e. the 18th prince of the FL's family. You start from " I don't care" to "ok, what's your deal? I'm intrigued!". That was well done. The more people you care for in a drama, the more interesting it gets, right?
I liked the FL a lot in the beginning. Her ways of trying to get around those "iconic scenes" and change the "script" were a fun watch. But the more the story developed and the more she learned about the actually not so "bad" ML, the more she became a nuisance, because she was unbelievable stubborn in her thinking of him being the source of her demise. Yes, she was wary of the never changing script, but her stubbornness lasted a bit too long imo. I quite hated her tunnel vision on that part. Even though later on when the issue was solved, they were quite sweet together, I stayed somewhat mad at her for never properly apologizing for her previous behaviour. I was even more pissed that the ML didn't mind and instead even accepted the blame in some way.
Same btw with the emperor. What an annoying guy! Also, kinda weird how fast he changed his attitude later on despite the years (!) he spent on hating.
I think the ML was the most pitiable one in this (I cared so much for him). The more you learn about him, the more you want to solve his problems and fix or cancel his relationships with troublesome acquaintances, so he wouldn't hurt more. Well done by the actor btw, performing that, making me worry so much. Adding the FL's hostile behaviour towards him, it just breaks your heart. Even more so, when you look at all the things he's doing over the time for her, "rebooting" his whole thinking and acting. At some point you understand why he falls in love with her, at some later point you don't understand why he continues loving her.
After the said big issue was finally cleared, the story's climax was most enjoyable, with well formed characters and magnificent scenes worth being placed in the "grand finale". The drama also ended the way it actually started. It felt like a roundabout finish and I liked that (even though you actually have to wait for an after-credit scene). As far as I noticed there were no loose ends either.
I found the transition from the "original script" with the villainous ML till the end, to a newer "more worthy script" where the change of events create another better version of him quite well done. Some things and some characters might have been predictable, others were unexpected - a good balance.
I probably still forgot some things to say, but well. This review is still again longer than I actually intended...

Old tropes with fresh touches. ?
Finally, this drama is aired after waiting for a year. And I am very satisfying. It beings laughes since the first episode. We can say that this drama is so meta as it used many tropes in the regular chinese drama, then boom the tropes got messy in the most hillarious ways. All the characters in this drama are super unique, not only the main characters. I can give the writer 10 for all the character. Sadly, the ending is quite confusing. Yet, this is still interesting and hillarious drama.

One of the best 2025 cdramas !
What a fun ride it was, with this drama! It has everything . The comedy being the best part of the drama, accompanied with the on point background music. I admit, it got bit annoying and frustrating around episodes 21 to 25. But it gets back on track after that. And gives us a solid ending. It wasn't a flawless drama, still one of the very enjoyable one. Li Yitong as Song Yimeng was such a perfect casting. She was brilliant specially in those initial episodes. Liu Yuning was so much better here acting wise. Loved to see him as Nan Heng. He portrayed Nan Heng's all shades so well. And all the cast were really good. Writing could have been better for some places but alright, it was Good !Was this review helpful to you?

Very well written ending …
This drama may looks like any other drama where the FL travels to epic story … but it is so well done , because they don’t take themselves seriously and the cherry of all is the ending , where you get a satisfactory happy ending which opens to more questions but you get the people watching satisfied … acting was good , the female lead and male lead are certainly good matches and have chemistry … I would love to watch all over again someday …Was this review helpful to you?
It's a funny historical comedy which is too long for its own good
I would have given it an 8.6 if that was the option.Right now, it isn't the option so my overall rating is 8.5.
The actors did a pretty good job for a romantic comedy, The villain slowly going completely crazy and making everyone hate him was quite a journey. I think his character was also very interesting because he wasn't introduced as a villain but later on portrayed as a villain because of his karma.
That's what I call a well written villain.
As for the ML, The actors was really good and I could see that he was truly hurt by the treatment of others as well having genuine love in his eyes. This is my first LYN drama and I am quite impressed by his acting.
The female lead was also funny and I enjoyed watching her. I did hate her a lot somewhere in the middle but she was able to get redemption. The scene where she covers the ML in the snow wasthe most emotional and beautiful scene of the drama.
The ending was a well written ending but the question about ML's existence puzzled people. It could have been made a bit more clear. I would love to see the couple in another drama in Modern setting.

Rage bait but it's actually worth it
The romance took forever to happen because the fl was reluctant to accept and act on her feelings, but it's understandable since she was afraid of dying by the ml's hands, as the script dictated would happen. I was starting to think he was the only one making an effort for the relationship, but then she stepped up saying that she also wanted to "walk in his direction." I really liked that. The fl is hilarious and very easy to relate to. At first, I was annoyed that she always assumed the worst of him, but if I were her I would have killed him myself lmao. Like let's be fr this man tried to kill her multiple times at the beginning and only failed because he was physically incapable. I feel like people ignore that just to complain that she was annoying and unreasonable.
The ml is very intelligent, adaptable, funny, and devoted to his friends and his lover. He is, by far, my favorite character from this drama.
The whole plot with the Night Walkers was also quite enjoyable to watch. LYN shines when it comes to playing roles where he's the leader and has a group of friends dedicated to following him.
The villain really made me develop my hater skills. I rolled my eyes every time he appeared on screen. Even so, it was cool to see his journey from hero to villain.
Also the switch up from the emperor was crazy. Idc if he tried to be a "good father" after it became clear his son did NOT kill that lady, he's still a stupid piece of shit.
This drama would get a high rating by my evaluation criteria anyway, but since it's LYN with his ponytail and pretty face, I give a 10.

Transmigration, Comedy, heart-wrenching, happy ending/cliff-hanger
This drama lived up to my expectations and you will be never disappointed!!! If you want transmigration, comedy, heart-wrenching and well written characters all throughout the episodes, then watch this drama!!!The drama uses cliches troupes and this drama delivers it so well, like you know its cliches but it's presentation is unique, you won't be bored!!!
Story - 9.5 The pacing of the story is consistent from the start to finish. It's comedy scenes from the start, heart-wrenching dialogue between characters in between the episodes, and the character development all throughout is well written. I like this fresh concept of transmigration, though the both worlds it implies — the script world and the real word in this drama, [spoiler] where the real world is not really the real world!, maybe just to bypass the censorship about transmigration c-dramas.
Acting/Cast - 9.5 The cast in this dramas from FL, ML and supporting roles delivers their scenes very well. Especially FL and ML, their chemistry is really compatible, their kissing scenes and subtle bickering with each other. The eye contact and pov acting is really fitting with background dialogue acting in every characters. They express their lines accurately whether it's comedy and emotional scenes.
Music - 10 OSTs is really good. Music effects every scenes are well fitted. Sound effects really enhanced and vibes the scenes so well.
Rewatch value - 9 Definitely a rewatch for me especially those comedy scenes cuz I want the comedy scenes more. Also, the intimate scenes and emotional scenes between FL and ML.
Overall - 9.5 I'm LYN fan and this drama makes me appreciate Liu Yuning's talent in acting and singing even more, the storyline and his character fits him so well(all actors did great, just little bias as LYN fan). This drama gives justice to what I expect. The pacing never wavers and stays entertaining till the end.

Such a good time : humor and action are in da place !
To appreciate this series, you need a sense of irony (deuxième degré in french)The script is fantastic. FL, ML and supporting actors are all superb and pro, and C-dramas are truly becoming amazing.
Li YiTong and Liu YuNing are excellent !
Their expressions perfectly complement the story.
The OST is well done, perfectly accompanying every moment.
The costumes and sets are impeccable and great.
In short, it's an extraordinary achievement, and rewatching it is even better, allowing you to savor all the subtleties of the story and the actors' expressions.
Bravo to everyone for this wonderful experience !

I finally finished this drama today! The entire story was truly amazing, with both the plot and the acting of all the cast outstanding. It was hard to get lost in the characters of Nan Heng, Song Yimeng, Song Yiting, Chu Guihong, Nan Rui, Shangguan He, and more. Many viewers were moved by Nan Heng and Song Yimeng's sadness, and were overcome with emotion by the intense anger they felt when they saw the Emperor and Chu Guihong constantly blaming and accusing Nan Heng. I think all the actors and actresses, along with the entire crew, did a fantastic job.
Not only that, but the drama's OST was also captivating.
Thank you, A Dream Within A Dream, for your incredible performance.

Power through - it's a must watch!
Not going to go into too much details but probably one of the best if not the best ending of C-Dramas in a good long while. Just beautifully done and wrapped up. Do not miss the end credit scene! Yes, it does get a bit draggy and annoying in the middle with FL constant hesitation and distrust of ML. Plus ML goes through a lot of heartache and pain but it makes it all the more worthwhile for viewers when he finally gets what he's fought so hard for. Also, some truly LOL scenes throughout the drama. This is not your typical historical romance C-Drama. Absolutely loved it! Last two episodes plus end credit scene totally redeemed the middle part of the drama. Was this review helpful to you?
Not Every Love Story Feels Like Love
I just finished A Dream Within a Dream, and I’ll say this first, it’s definitely a good watch. It kept me interested all the way through, and that’s not something I say lightly. The female lead really carried this drama for me. Her expressions, her timing, the banter, everything felt so natural and effortless. She made her character feel alive without trying too hard, and I genuinely enjoyed watching her in every scene.
It was also nice seeing Wang Cheng Si (Fu Gui) again after Prisoner of Beauty. That alone added a bit of emotional familiarity.
But my biggest issue was the romance.
It existed, yes, you could see it in the storyline and in certain moments. But I didn’t feel it deeply enough. I never fully believed that the female lead was in love with the male lead in that consuming, undeniable way. What I was missing was that emotional shift… that softness where she lets her guard down completely.
The male lead gave more emotionally, and because of that, the relationship felt slightly unbalanced. At times, her treatment of him felt distant, even when the story suggested otherwise. And that made it hard for me to fully invest in their love story.
So while the drama is enjoyable and well-acted, the romance didn’t hit the emotional depth I was hoping for.

This C-Drama Had Me Hooked & Stressed
This was actually my first time watching a C-drama live as it aired, what a ride! From the beginning, the characters and dialogue were hilarious without being cringe. Even during serious scenes, there were light moments that made everything feel balanced and not too heavy. But some episodes were tough to watch, not because they were bad, but because they were so intense and frustrating I wanted to scream. Still, that just shows how deep the story pulled me in!
The acting? Top tier. Liu Yu Ning (Nan Heng) was calm, confident, and humble all at once his scenes with Li Yi Tong (Song Yimeng) were full of yearning and emotion. I loved every bit. And Wang You Shuo(Chu Gui Hong)? That man played his role so well that I physically wretched every time he showed up on my screen. I did feel sorry for him at times but his blame game got out of hand, I hated him in the best way.If you’re thinking of watching it, you should definitely do.
