This is the combines action, intrigue, and a sprinkle of romance. This series has taken my world by storm, and it’s not just because of its captivating storyline—Dylan Wang’s performance as the lead is nothing short of mesmerizing! From the moment he graces the screen, Dylan Wang captures your attention with his charismatic presence. He has this incredible ability to embody Xu Qian, bringing a depth and authenticity that makes you feel every emotion he portrays. Whether he’s battling foes or sharing tender moments with his co-stars, you can’t help but be drawn into his world.
Dylan’s character is a complex one, filled with layers that unfold beautifully throughout the series. Watching him evolve from a young warrior to a seasoned protector is a journey that keeps you glued to your seat. His expressive eyes convey a thousand words, and you can see the passion he pours into every scene.
One of the standout moments for me was when his character faced a moral dilemma. The way Dylan portrayed the internal struggle was so relatable and raw that it left me in awe. You could feel the weight of his decisions, and it made me reflect on how our choices shape us. It’s moments like these that showcase his incredible acting chops and make him a standout star in the industry.
But it’s not all seriousness! Dylan also has a playful side that shines through in the lighter moments of the series. What a Ride!
Zero Expectations, Pleasant SurpriseI went into this drama with absolutely no expectations, and I have to say, it was such a fun and unexpected surprise! The comedy? *So good*. I laughed so much I lost track of time. The comedic timing, the way the story was set up, and all the twists along the way kept me thoroughly entertained.
A Plot That Keeps You Guessing
The story is definitely one of its strong points. It’s intricate, engaging, and full of clever twists. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the drama would throw in another curveball to keep things interesting. The pacing worked really well too—there was a great balance between the humor, emotional depth, and suspense. It kept me engaged from start to finish without ever feeling too slow or overwhelming.
Comedy Meets Heart
This drama is the perfect mix of laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt emotions. It knows exactly when to hit you with humor and when to slow down for the more meaningful, emotional scenes. Underneath all the comedy, there are important messages about staying true to yourself and not being fooled by appearances. It’s surprisingly touching in ways I didn’t expect.
Xu Qi An: Chaotic and Lovable
Xu Qi An, the main character, is just such a joy to watch. He’s chaotic, hilarious, and so easy to root for. Dylan did such a fantastic job bringing him to life—I could feel the sincerity and genuineness in his performance. I’m not usually a big fan of Dylan, but he really nailed it here. Xu Qi An’s journey had me laughing, crying, and cheering him on at every turn.
The Family Dynamic = Chaos and Love
Xu Qi An’s family? Absolute chaos, and I mean that in the best way possible. Every single member is a total weirdo, but their love and support for each other shine through all the drama. Their over-the-top antics brought so much charm and warmth to the story.
Supporting Cast Done Right
The supporting cast is fantastic—every character has their own quirks and personality, and they all bring something unique to the table. Xu Qi An’s bond with Wei Yuan was so wholesome and one of my favorite parts of the drama. And let’s not forget Yang Yan—always ready to fight for Xu Qi An, no matter the odds. Watching all the guardians gradually come together to support our boy was incredibly satisfying and heartwarming.
The Imperial Family: A Refreshing Twist
The emperor? Pretty despicable, as expected. But here’s the twist: the royal siblings actually *like* each other! No scheming(ok, there is but not against each other though), no betrayal, just genuine sibling love. It’s a small detail, but it was so refreshing to see in a palace setting.
Romance: Minimal but Cute
Since this isn’t a romance-focused drama, the romance wasn’t a huge deal, and honestly, it didn’t leave a lasting impression on me. That said, it was still cute and endearing in its own way. The ML’s love interest had her sweet moments, and their dynamic added a lighthearted touch to the story without overshadowing the main plot.
Themes of Loyalty and Unity
One of the things I really appreciated was how loyalty and camaraderie were portrayed. Even when Xu Qi An clashed with other characters, when it came down to the right thing, they stood by him. Seeing everyone plead for his life and fight alongside him was so moving—it made the group dynamics even more impactful.
Final Thoughts
I didn't actually plan on watching this drama, but it’s definitely one I’m glad I checked out. It’s funny, heartfelt, and packed with great characters and an engaging story. If you’re looking for something that’ll make you laugh but also hit you in the feels, this is definitely worth checking out. And who knows? Maybe we’ll get an awesome second season to dive back into this world!

This needs to have season 2
The first few episodes were a bore, but fortunately the story started picking up it's phase on the succeeding episodes. There were a lot of hilarious scenes and they made me howl with laughter. Dylan is really improving in his acting, I'd have to give him that, even with comedy. Tian Xi Wei is ok for me, but I wish the scriptwriter didn't overdo her playfulness. I liked the guardian yamen peeps, they provided much of the story's meat, specially Gold Gong Yang Yan. He's my fave, and kinda like your campus crush who excelled in everything but surprisingly loyal. The Realm sect, kudos as well to these guys , as they pretty much provided Xu Qi An all the help they can give. The emotional rollercoaster on the last few episodes caught me off-guard, and it was touching at some degree. Though I felt robbed when the final battle with Emperor Jing Yuan was cut short and he had to be erased in everyone's memories. Gawd I hated it. The county governor's story arc was the most heartbreaking of all. When he was killed in prison, all hell broke loose. Xu Qi An was unstoppable, he had to avenge the poor old man. Even the guardians were ready to defend him to death. The way the imperial guards turned their backs and let Ning Yan beat the shit out of the two villains in league with the emperor. How the judiciary minister deliberately pretended to close the gate with the other court officials and listened in content while the two was beaten outside. It was damn satisfying.
Biggest plot twist, mystery man was Xu Qi An's dad. The friggin' 2nd rank sorcerer who made everyone forget Ning Yan. And the bureau supervisor who could be the real villain in the story. Cliff-hanger hinting on a season 2, I just hope they keep the original cast.

Theee bestttt!
I have watched many K-dramas, C-dramas, and J-dramas, but I am particularly a fan of Chinese costume dramas. This one really made me cry! Dylan Wang is an exceptional actor; I don't think there is another performer who can move me emotionally like he does—his performance is truly on another level. The storyline of the drama is perfect, and the cast is outstanding. I have no complaints at all. Anyone can watch it without hesitation. Was this review helpful to you?
“But you can't fool the heavens”
A corporate slave is transmigrated to a world inside the book and becomes a detective, making allies and adversaries at every turn.Strengths
• Compelling storyline with strong audience engagement.
• Outstanding performances, especially impressed by Dylan Wang.
• High-quality action choreography and a memorable soundtrack.
• Unique protagonist who succeeds through personality and wit rather than just physical strength; sticks to his principles even in the most unfavorable situations.
• Strong opening and conclusion with potential for a second season.
Weakness
• Pacing issues in the middle sections.
• The comedy at times might come off too forced.
Overall, a very good watch. Recommended if you like watching a drama with anime-style hero narratives.

Awesome till the end!
This went so HARD!!!!! From beginning to end, the story, the actors, the action...it all gave 300%. I laughed, I cried, I sat in wonder at such a well-crafted drama. It's not a drama where you have to "think" to ponder the character's emotions, because you can feel them immediately. The portrayals are so raw, you will have this visceral reaction to the good, the bad, and the evil in this drama. And hats off to Dylan Wang for his great acting in making Qi'an a character we all understood and all wanted to win by keeping him relatable and utterly human, yet heroic in the face of adversity...in a story that gave him superhuman, ultimate, level-up powers. He wasn't perfect, he was just decent and kind, and that kept us wanting him to win through each battle. It was lovely to not watch people be mistreated for 40 episodes with no recourse or hope until the very end. It was lovely to see intelligent, strong women and soft, protected women in the same show characterized appropriately. They weren't just props and we got to watch them all either be active participants or learn and grow. It was lovely to see how camaraderie and family could not only be built, but made stronger. Liu Yi Jun...was a powerhouse. I could go on forever because truthfully, this entire cast embodied the characters they played so well. I could write a dissertation on all the good things in this drama, and not because it was deep, philosophical, or thought provoking, but simply because it was a great story with amazing actors, and I had a great time watching it. I have already started re-watching it! This is a 10 out of 10 and a banging way to start off the new year! Was this review helpful to you?

An amazing show is all I can summarise this as.
This was such a cohesive plotline with an actually interesting storyline. The entire show was embellished with priceless comedy, but what really spun me for a loop was how serious it got in the final quarter. It wasn't done abruptly, but it was rather that the innocence of the show got more.... well... less innocent.Stuff got serious, and real problems like deaths of innocent lives occurred. This forced Xu Qi' An to take a more serious role.
What was really intriguing to me was the continuity of the use of a poem that got him a place with the Guardians; "You're paid as a court official. You live off the people's resources. You can easily oppress the common people, but you can't fool the heavens". The gravity that this had within the show became more and more apparent, the more that matters unfolded. It also reflects the sad truth of real life tbh.
All in all, great scriptwriting, great acting and a great OST.

I strongly believe like this was created to appeal to me specifically.
First thing I have to say, where is the sequel?! I need season two now!If I had to describe this show in one word it would be fun. If you love funny, emotional, gay, character-driven fantasy…. I highly recommend checking this out.
The beginning of this show is fascinating, and there are some laugh-out-loud moments. There are some elements of this series which are borderline reality, and that is really the fantasy that I love best. ОК. This wasn't necessarily unique, and yet it's so imaginative.
The main plot treads some well-known ground, but I find that’s really where the main positive element comes in, sometimes stories don’t need to utterly surprise us to be worth. There is a lot of creativity on display in the smaller details - the music, the costumes, the magic, the problems that need to be solved and the ways it allows the characters to interact.
I found it well-written and fleshed out. It doesn't have an overabundance of explanation and details, but nor does it have a big of plotholes.
The pacing is a bit too slow. For example, romance is incredibly slow burn, and I would have liked it to have progressed a little further by the end.
Overall I speak gush about this series all day but just know it is was utterly funny, charming and delightful from beginning to end.

Every aspect of this show is good
I finished it today and I won’t ever get tired of praising this show. The story is entertaining, the pace never lacks and it’s even fast at moments. the actors are well cast and everyone shines (even minor roles) and Wang Hedi proves to everyone doubting that he can not only carry a drama but that he’s SO GOOD at it. Adventure, Fantasy, lovable characters, an intriguing storyline, humor and comedy. this show has everything and something for everyone. Gladly watch more seasons/movies -and wish for them to be made, as the IP has 5 books worth of story-Was this review helpful to you?
