it was a bit too short :(
The general concept is one that's really intriguing, but the run time per episode was just too short to really develop a nice plot with more facets to it. The characters lacked personality and really only existed to serve the plot. There wasn't much development in terms of getting to know the characters so they appeared very flat and boring. The first five episodes I had wondered if they forgot to put the comedy tag because the whole scenario and lack of explanation as well as the characters' demeanors with each other had me laughing my ass off. The last couple of episodes I did feel moved when Yudam remembered what happened in the past (loved the historical garb! they were so pretty <3) and then watched the love of his life die before his eyes again by the same person. But, other than that, there weren't very many high points to the show. Like others, I'm hopeful that there will be another season so that maybe they can be fleshed out a bit more, but I highly doubt there will be. It seems like that kind of show that's supposed to be left open-ended.Was this review helpful to you?
Sweet.. but too short
I don't really have anything to add from other reviews. The main characters all did a good job with what they had to work with. What I really don't understand is the view that wtchrs want these short shows. There is so much they could have done with this, but they turned it into just a sweet, short story with only a little emotion. Nothing is explained, kisses are sweet, but there is no passion, too many blank looks and a lack of a really solid storyline.
Maybe it's true that many manga's do not make the best stories for series, or whoever is making them into series isn't really concerned with what the viewers want, or maybe they just don't have the budget, who knows.
I am not the only one who longs for more bl's.... but they need to be as high a quality as other dramas. And this one is not.
I hope things pick up for 2023 or I may have to give up on bl forever.

A High-Potential Fantasy Romance Undermined by Format and Execution
“The Director Who Buys Me Dinner” delivers an intriguing premise: a young employee, Dongbaek, finds himself entangled in a centuries-old curse with his enigmatic CEO, Min Yu Dam. Adapted from the webtoon by Toesa and illustrated by Yang Eun Ji, the series had all the ingredients for a standout South Korean BL drama—fantasy, romance, and mystery. Unfortunately, it falls short of its potential due to its constrained format and underdeveloped storytelling. The short episode runtime—a staple of Korean BL dramas—proved to be a significant disadvantage here. With only 10 episodes, each averaging 16 minutes (minus credits and recaps), the series simply didn’t have enough time to delve deeply into its characters or unravel its fantasy elements. The result is a story that feels rushed and undercooked, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.
The fantasy premise is ambitious and unique, hinting at a love story spanning centuries. However, key elements of the curse remain unexplored: How did the curse originate? Why is it a curse at all? What happened during the centuries between the first Dongbaek and the present one? The lack of explanations makes the narrative feel incomplete and frustrating.
Character development also suffers. Dongbaek, the protagonist, often feels like a passive participant in his own story, reacting rather than engaging. Min Yu Dam, despite his tragic backstory, lacks the emotional depth and desperation one might expect from someone burdened with immortality. Denis, introduced as a potential wildcard, ends up feeling like a plot device with unclear motivations.
The series’ title suggests a recurring motif of dinners between Dongbaek and Yu Dam, but this stops after the first couple of episodes, which feels like a missed opportunity to build their relationship. Similarly, the chemistry between the leads is inconsistent, with their romantic moments often feeling restrained and lacking the passion needed to sell their connection.
That said, there are bright spots. The cinematography is polished, with several well-composed shots that enhance the story’s atmosphere. The music complements key moments, although it occasionally compensates for the lack of emotional resonance in the performances. The ending, while divisive, stands out as one of the show’s better-executed elements, offering a bittersweet conclusion that feels thematically fitting.
Ultimately, The Director Who Buys Me Dinner is a classic case of a great concept let down by its execution. The short format robbed the story of its depth, leaving viewers with unresolved questions and untapped potential. While the production team’s effort is evident, the series needed more time and resources to fully explore its ambitious narrative.
For fans of BL dramas, it’s worth a watch for the unique premise and some enjoyable moments. However, it serves as a reminder that certain stories require more room to breathe, and perhaps this one deserved a format that could do its fantasy romance justice.

Had the Potential
A short review...I felt like the story had the potential to it. I can't help but find similarities between the plot of this and the Century of Love, wherein both are waiting for their loved one.
The story had the potential to be expounded more and be used to explain and converse more on what is happening to the characters. Since it was only an 10 episodes BL Series with maximum 14 minutes each episode, I felt like the story was rushed and the story was being cut out of the important details of it.
The actor who portrayed Dongbaek simply carried this series. I felt like Yudam and Dennis did not expressed their emotions as much as Dongbaek. But still, they served the characters well and I'm somewhat satisfied with it.
The ending is bad, with the sudden reverse of story, and being back on the day 1. I am okay with open endings, but I want more from this series.

Good - in the right mood
Here are some cons and pros:Cons:
-The acting is mediocre. Not the worst, though.
-It's way too short for it's story. We don't even know what happened to Denis! Why is he the way he is?
The story wanted an action but it didn't have the time for it.
-The characters are kinda dry.
Pros:
+The ending broke me, in a good way. (But it ended way too soon.)
+On the other hand, when it comes to fluffy love story it's really good - perfect example of "short and sweet" - 10 episodes with like 12 minutes of action.
Overall: good drama, there must be a mood for it.

Had potential
I read the manhwa, and I like some of the changes they made, even the flip at the end but the series left out some critical details that some of the character's actions did not make sense. They never explain Denis' purpose or why he kept saying the Director always abandons people, etc. I get why they did not show the moments from the other lives they lived, but even a montage could have helped explain Denis' behavior. It had a lot of potential, but ultimately it left me scratching my head. I would still recommend it as a series to watch, but if you have a lot on your list, I'd say it is not one to make a priority. Was this review helpful to you?

Great Story - Just too Short
I love supernatural stories and this one was very interesting. I was hooked from the first episode. Both lead actors did a great job convincing me of the story. The death scenes were so well done and had me crying both times. Denis was also amazing. He played the part perfectly.I only wish it could have been longer. 10 episodes are okay but 10 minutes each (minus opening and closing)? Really? That is shorter than a typical movie.
You really had to fill in the details of the story but at the end I had it figured out. I just wanted to see it acted out. Plus, I would have liked to have seen more of why Denis was such a mess. I felt bad for him.
I enjoyed this. I have less tissues now. Watch it. Just know that it is short.

A very bizarre BL
After the first couple of episode I kept asking myself two things, what on earth is going on here? & why am I continuing to watch it? But in all honesty, I had to keep watching to see how this would all make sense.Thankfully I stuck with it, because everything started to come together during episode 7. It was along time coming.
The story line was a bit confusing at times, but the two main actors Jeong Woo and Young Woon blended well with it. You Sung's character was the real creepy player in this story. He did a good job at making him look & act disturbing on screen.
The very last two minutes made for the best ending and put a complete circle on the series. It's what made me bump up my scoring on this drama. Had the question not been asked by Dong Baek to Yu Dam at the very end, this would have been a total waste of time.
Happy Ending for sure.

Cute filler drama, but feels incomplete - Mild spoilers ahead
So far it’s a pretty plain story. The plot had potential, but the story evolves in a a way that feels slow and at the same time not doesn’t feel like we get enough content and background.
The preview for episode 7 looks promising tho, so maybe it gets better. I’ll update after finishing the series.
So far, I’d still recommend it as a lighthearted watch to pass the time or as filler in between dramas.
Edit: Completed the drama, and it does get more interesting after episode 7, but also ends too suddenly without explaining some of the plot points. Like, why does Dennis hate the Yudam so much? We can only make assumptions, such as, the mercenary that killed Dongbaek in a previous life looks like him. Also, in this present life, he seemed to have been in love with Yudam some years ago, but felt used; and now he fell for Dongbaek and feels like Yudam is using him too. Anyways, we’re just left reading between the lines with any tangible answers.
It was a cute quick watch, a nice filler drama. But not one I’d write home about.

Short but adorable story
It's not really like I expected it to be, but I like this series more like this. I was expecting this to be a reunion after reincarnation story but it's wayyy beter. I think the creators went really creative. I love how certain emotions are shown more than other and the way they build this story up to the ending is so good to.This series definitely deserved episodes from 1 hour long but it's fine the way it is now. The ending, the tears are all over my pillow now. This series was sooo good. One thing I kinda missed was the backstory but in the end it was about the present, not the past exactly.

While it's not the best Korean BL out there, it's also not the worst
Another series has been completed. And while it wasn't what I was expecting, I can say that I liked it to a degree. It started off drawing in my attention, getting a little muddled in the middle and, personally to me, ended on an okay note.Could it have been better? Most definitely. But I must say, the ending isn't really predictable (a HEA) and I guess that's why I like it.
Pros (with some spoilers):
♡ The acting of the MC was good in all of the episodes as they were able to carry me on an emotional journey.
♡ Learning about the past lives of Min Yu Dam and Seol Dong Baek gave us an understanding on why the director was doing what he was doing.
♡ The ending also went a different direction that I thought it would as now Seol Dong Baek is the one who knows about the past life when he didn't previously. And now it is him who willingly wants to date the director and not leaving it up to destiny.
Cons (with spoilers):
♡ Character development or in this case the lack of it
♡ What was the purpose of Dennis character? Cause he had some serious issues that needed to be resolved and he needed professionally help for those issues.
♡ And what does Dennis mean tha Min Yu Dam uses people? Was...was he and Dennis an item previously? Or he felt that Min Yu Dam used him professionally and was now getting ready to replace him with a new act?
♡ In the early part of the series, something possessed Seol Dong Baek. What the heck was it, because that wasn't explained properly.
At the end, I give this series a 7.5. It had potential. It just was ot able to met it.

Great storyline but fell short of execution
I was sold on the synopsis of the story, loved the main leads and how their story grew, but i felt robbed on the last episode as it felt rushed leaving me with an unexplained open ending, also i didn't understand Denise's character as it was not explained as to how he's entangled with the director and his mental capacity(his character felt forced on Seol). Before I forget, also why did the director stop buying dinner as per the title of the story and the whole premise of it.All in all i hope there will be a season 2 as more needs to be explained and explored. Was this review helpful to you?
