Maybe it's the best I've ever seen

When I started watching this drama, I didn't expect to be so surprised. The plot is basic and I thought it wouldn't have much depth. I realized it would be the opposite when each episode was 1h30 (LOL). however, even with long episodes, the plot, development and characters manage to sustain themselves. Furthermore, the subplots developed are thought-provoking, and in many moments I found myself tearing up with secondary characters (something that was very well used in this drama). another factor is that I cried even more with the main couple. In addition to the two protagonists having undeniable chemistry, seeing them hurt each other (especially the male character) was something that affected me in undeniable ways. I was on the third episode and I thought DAMN, I'M OBSESSED. result? I marathoned in three days. I agree that some of the solutions at the end were hasty, but damn it I loved it

Started so well, but then the story got lost...

I loved it so much in the beginning, but then it became a makjang. There were too many cliches and unnecessary plot points that didn't help the story forward. We were promised a second chance romance, but the romance lacked depth when we could have had such an emotional journey by the two great actors playing the main couple.

Also, as a doctor... the medical aspect of the story is ridiculous.

Still, I loved the characters and the transformation of the family. I cried and laughed a lot. This drama will stay dear to my heart, but that just infuriates me more because I feel ROBBED.

Love it

One of the kdramas that I actually enjoyed and finished watching. This one I enjoyed from 1st episode till the end. Love Kim Soo Hyun…best actor!! Enjoyable storyline, meaningful, funny and touching. Great job by the entire casts, lead actress, etc. Worth watching. Can’t wait for next project by Kim Soo Hyun. Will rewatch this drama.

It takes this show entirely too long to get good.

It takes this show entirely too long to become enjoyable. The beginning was so boring that I repeatedly fell asleep while watching this show to the point that I had to drop it. But...it's my uncle's favorite Kdrama so I had to give it another chance for his sake, he was really excited, okay?! Even though I didn't like the execution of this, from the start I thought the concept for this show was interesting.
It flips the cold rich CEO who falls for the cute poor girl trope on its head by making the rich ceo a woman and the cute pauper a man, and then it challenges the Cinderella's happily ever after by showing the miserable marriage these two have. Then you get a black widower set up and the show is on the go. Except the first 9 episodes were genuinely cheesy and intolerable. I suffered through though(for the sake of my uncle *sigh*) and eventually, things got good. Now, I still think the show was kind of lame. It's full of tropes, dumb plot twists and so predictable that I constantly could predict the next event before it happened. But it was enjoyable and you slowly get invested. I personally liked how no-nonsense the Female Lead is. She does not let miscommunications fester. She doesn't do the lame "lying to spare them" thing that Kdramas love to pull. She rejects coldheartedly and exposes the villains like it's her favorite pastime. And while I dislike the actor, the male lead's character is basically flawless. He really does everything competently and with a good heart. So you want to root for the characters. Especially when the stakes become higher.
The acting in this show was not particularly good. It's the time of exaggerated acting you expect to see in the romcom genre which I think this show falls into. It gets a bit cringe at time but it doesn't really matter.
I did not pay attention to the music and I find the production a bit too polished. It's like a candy cane world!
Overall, I would say this show was set to be hated by me but I ended up enjoying the second half of it (with a generous dose of scrolling through the Heated Rivalry tag on Tumblr whilst watching because I have my limits, okay?!) I don't think it was bad but it isn't as good as everyone made it sound but it's watchable and you won't be mad at your wasted time by the end. Probably. That said, I'm not interested in this types of shows anymore so it was a bit of a drag for me for the most part with moments where it got interesting.

failed to meet my expectations

dropped because there was ZERO substance and the female lead was just so unlikeable and unrelatable. so much potential that was unrealized in the premise of the show; to depict two people struggling with their marriage in a society that frowns upon divorce could've been incredibly powerful had it been executed properly. such a shame as i adore kim soo hyun, and have been meaning to enjoy a kim ji won drama.

A Disguised Soap Opera... Not a Good Watching Experience but a Good Learning One

NOTE: This commentary/review will probably be slightly edited once I've finished watching this series. But not by much.

This drama screams "money" and is pretty easy on the eye for sure but the amount of business talk fillers and characters we don't give a sh** about is ridiculous.

We're in for the romance between the leads yet we get mostly family feuds, business talk and political backstabbing in spades. The drama also features quite a lot of filler scenes and these overly long episodes (on average 1h 30 mn... literally a movie per episode) doesn't help.

I've got too admit, I also struggled a lot to get past the ML's controversy. I usually manage to overlook these sort of things once immersed in the story but since this is basically a disguised makjang that proved to be difficult.

Every time I see him acting in love with the main actress, I see the image of a grown ass man grooming a kid 12 years his junior when she was a minor for his sick tendencies so the act of him being in love with an adult woman is just not convincing. Not because he doesn't act well... But because sadly, as much as I don't want to condemn a whole drama for one sick individual, that individual has a main role, so that's not that easy.
This being said... after a couple of episodes, I've managed to reduced my overflowing disgust to a mildly annoying background noise... I think that's the best I can do now with this actor.

Apart from that, fortunately for me, I went with absolutely NO expectations and I'm only watching this for language learning purposes i.e with Korean subs and a heavy use of Naver's dictionary.

I wasn't planning on learning so many technical Korean (and English for that matter) words about actions, shares, private equity, hedge funds and whatnot. Not the most "fun words" to learn but still more entertaining than reading business news.

Honestly I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone. It's overly long for no reason. It's lots of money and no substance. And the way I see it, I'm watching some soap à la Dallas and not the romance I initially signed up for.

HOWEVER if you're learning Korean like me and want to learn some vocab... That's actually a good choice. There's lots of complicated sentences about business and the judiciary system with long and formal sentences...

The English subs, last I checked, usually under-translate or make up sentences in the worst case scenario... lots of idioms are lost in translation so you won't be tempted to check your understanding with the English translations (or other language you're more familiar with) because any sentence you might have trouble with, you can be sure they didn't bother to properly translate them.

They keep the core meaning but remove all the idioms or imagery that make some dialogues a blast ( and I have to give credits where it's due, lots of fillers, but the dialogues are really well written). Netflix is known for their poor translations when Korean is concerned.

Basically they always give precedence to making the sentence as palatable to the wider public at the cost of accuracy and cultural nuance. Which is why, when a series is available on both Netflix and Viki, I always recommend people to be a bit more patient and go for Viki translations made by fans who are truly serious about conveying cultural subtleties in their subs.

Netflix is Translation Fast Food. Viki is Translation Gourmet's.

Also since the drama is not that great but also not that bad, you can take as much time as you want watching it without feeling the "urge to cheat" and finish the rest in English.

Anyway that was my long 2 cents.
I really don't understand this high ratings.... but again, that's not the first time this happened so...

Good solid comedy

Ever since Glory, I stopped watching K drama ... I feel it's getting too graphical and having needless violence, gearing towards abusive relationships. I saw Castaway Diva ... again it was more skewed towards abusive relationships, which took over the drama and made it unwatchable for me.

So I am looking for comedy without the trendy abusive stories. This one seems to have the good acting, the story line, and all the funny jokes. I like it so far after 2 eps. The audience is being surprised with unexpected events. The jokes are not physical jokes so the writers are doing a terrific job here using irony to make me laugh.

Of course, the story is going to be predictable with happy ending because it's a comedy. But the writing makes it entertaining and not too stressful to watch.

Intense Drama with Sharp Insights

Queen of Tears was an emotional rollercoaster that thoroughly captivated me from start to finish. Kim Soo-hyun, starring as the male lead (ML), delivers yet another stellar performance, consistently proving why he's one of the top actors in the industry. His ability to convey deep emotions and bring his character to life is nothing short of remarkable, making every scene he's in a highlight.

The drama itself keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with each episode, thanks to a series of unexpected plot twists that expertly showcase the disparities between different social classes. The attention to detail is impeccable, and the epilogues at the end of each episode add a satisfying depth to the overall storytelling. This drama excels in blending intense drama with critical social commentary, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate intricate narratives and powerful performances.

Queen of Tears fill the audience eyes with tears let it be sad ones or joyful ones

I don't usually write reviews for any drama or movies but this drama really pushed me to write one. I have no words to describe how beautiful this drama is, from the cast to the directors and the writer everyone of them did a fabulous job in doing their roles to make this drama a wonderful masterpiece. The writer once again showed us that she is the queen of writers because one of the main reason i started watching this drama was because of her. Ans the stellar performance by each and every cast member was just so realistic especially Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won portrayed their emotions very well and not to forget the villain Park Sung Hoon the audience really hated his character because of how well he acted to be do that role. The story was a rollercoaster of emotions for all the audience watching it and it is the drama to make everyone who watches it shed tears.

A tale of love and loss

Korean drama watchers love romance, love which burns as it builds. As the trailer dropped, the drama lovers knew what had been packed for them.

Baek Hyun Woo meets Hong Hae In under complex surroundings. What follows is love, angst, and a profound misunderstanding that engulfs them both with time. The story revolves around the protagonists. Their love meets a rough patch as a tragedy strikes. Caught in a roller coaster of emotions, they find each other drifting away caught in a whirlwind of misunderstanding.

Kim Soo Hyun as Hyun Woo is beautiful. You will love his effervescent slipping into the skin of the sweet little husband. The man who is infamous for sticking with rich heiress has got a beautiful score this time. Ji Won as Hae In shines like a moon in the story. Her dialogue delivery, strides, and hair flipping reminds me of Rachel from The Heirs. The girl surely knows how to build the aura. The chemistry between leads is palpable and smooth. Mixing vulnerability and resilience in equal proportions elevates the whole story to a new level.

The story has been creating buzz for a while. This is because of the way they explore the intricacies of human emotions. Even in his venture, It's Okay to be Not Okay, Soo Hyun talked about depression and multiple perspectives. In this story, the director uses family and complexities to weave a web of emotions as the characters develop. This is life, right?

The cinematographer did a brilliant job... Capturing the poignant dichotomy existing between leads evades through the change of tone. Throughout the series, the ensemble cast gives a stellar performance. Each actor whispers life through the skin of the characters. Glorified sung Hoon is back being icy cold sociopath lover doing extremely good in his job. The arc of characters this man is playing is clearly creating a storm. Alas! He is still not getting the girl again.

With Har In and Hyun Woo palpitating and gallivanting in their gallon, it is difficult to assume how love is going to make it. But the poignant exploration characters are making is surely leaving a never-ending mark.

AMAZING, EMOTIONAL

This was an absolute delight to watch. Congratulations to the writer, what a great storyline. As expected, Kim Soo Hyun was phenomenal in his performance. I now have become a fan of Kim Ji Won, she was outstanding in her role. I was really happy to see Kwak Dong Yeon in this drama. He is a great actor and very handsome. The drama was funny, emotional, and brought tears to my eyes. I could feel the emotions of the drama thru the exceptional performance of the actors. Thank you, Kim Soo Hyun and all of the other actors for the hard work put into this work. The real fans are very appreciative. This is definitely a drama that will be watched & rewatched for years to come.
