Hidden Love: A Drama of Contradictions

The Chinese drama Hidden Love attempts to weave a narrative of romance and self-discovery but often gets tangled in its own contradictions. At its core, it tells the story of Sang Zhi and her evolving relationship with Duan Jia Xu, her brother’s friend. While the show has its moments of brilliance, it is overshadowed by its uneven character dynamics and questionable romantic framing.

One of the highlights of Hidden Love lies in its portrayal of Sang Zhi when she’s allowed to exist outside of her romantic entanglement. Scenes featuring her at work or interacting with her university friends showcase a capable and well-rounded young woman. These moments provide a glimpse into her potential as a character—confident, relatable, and grounded. Zhao Lu Si’s acting amplifies these moments with remarkable versatility. She has a unique ability to seamlessly navigate between emotions, shifting from joy to despair within a single scene. Her performance in emotional moments, particularly those involving her heartbreak, stands out as some of the drama’s most impactful.

Victor Ma’s portrayal of Sang Zhi’s brother, Sang Yan, is another strong point. The sibling relationship feels authentic, capturing the blend of rivalry and deep care that defines many sibling bonds. Sang Yan’s role as both a protector and someone Sang Zhi can be vulnerable with adds depth to their dynamic. The airport scene, where Sang Zhi breaks down in his arms after a painful heartbreak, is a testament to the emotional strength of their bond and remains one of the drama’s most memorable moments. It’s rare to see a sibling relationship portrayed with such nuance, and Victor Ma’s performance anchors these moments with sincerity. The drama’s soundtrack also deserves praise, with its catchy and well-placed OSTs enhancing many key scenes.

However, the strengths of Hidden Love are often undermined by its central romantic storyline. Chen Zheyuan’s portrayal of Duan Jia Xu as the male lead is underwhelming, lacking the charisma or depth needed to carry his character. Jia Xu himself is difficult to relate to—overly controlling, possessive, and prone to jealousy. These traits make him less of a romantic ideal and more of a cautionary figure. His dynamic with Sang Zhi is particularly troubling, as he continues to treat her like a younger sister even after they begin dating. This lingering brother-sister dynamic casts an uncomfortable shadow over their romance, making it hard to invest in their relationship.

The five-year age gap between the leads is not inherently problematic, but Jia Xu’s behavior exacerbates the discomfort. Having known Sang Zhi since her childhood, his inability to shift his perception of her from a child to a partner feels unsettling. It’s as if the drama is trying to force a romance without addressing the fundamental mismatch in their dynamic. This issue is compounded by Sang Zhi’s characterization around Jia Xu. While she’s shown to be articulate and mature in other settings, her behavior around Jia Xu regresses into exaggerated cutesiness and awkward stuttering. It’s a disservice to Zhao Lu Si’s talent, reducing her character to a caricature when she’s capable of so much more.

The romantic scenes between the leads suffer as a result. Instead of chemistry, there’s a persistent sense of dissonance, as if the characters are trapped in roles they can’t escape. Sang Zhi’s infantilized behavior and Jia Xu’s condescending attitude make it hard to root for them as a couple. The narrative’s failure to transition their dynamic from a brother-sister relationship to an equitable partnership leaves the romance feeling forced and unconvincing.

Ultimately, Hidden Love struggles to find its footing. Its strengths in sibling dynamics, emotional performances, and music are overshadowed by a central romance that fails to resonate. For viewers who can overlook the uncomfortable framing of the leads’ relationship, there’s a baseline romance story here. However, for those who can’t get past the persistent brother-sister dynamic and lack of authentic chemistry in the main couple, the drama’s flaws become impossible to ignore.

Hidden Love leaves much to be desired, despite its occasional moments of brilliance. The inability to convincingly shift the leads’ dynamic and the wasted potential of its talented cast weigh heavily on the drama.

A 5.5/10 feels apt for a show that sparks moments of promise but ultimately fails to deliver on its central premise.

For those who are still wondering or hesitating to watch this drama, just give it a try! It has a good storyline (nothing very stressful), lots of heartwarming scenes, nice visuals (Zhao Lu Si's clothes here are pretty and looks good on her!), beautiful soundtrack (Forever Star is especially written for this drama), superb acting (even the micro-expressions of the leads are spot-on), perfect chemistry between the main leads and even the supporting cast (sibling chemistry between Zhao Lu Si and Victor Ma, which we often don't get from dramas), and I don't know what else to say to convince you, the rankings don't lie! I will definitely miss waiting for new episodes to come. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Hidden Love! ❤️

The chemistry between the leads was beyond doubt amazing .I loved their natural and unforced Interactions, I love the comfort I got from their relationship I love how their relationship was far from toxic but health and admirable 🤍

The osts were beautiful and reflected the story and the Cinematography was to die for.

Overall this was a nice ride..I roller coaster of many emotions and I must say I'll miss this drama so much.

We probably all have at least one sweet crush when we were young. Some materialized into a relationship, some might just be that one crush that you wish likes you back. Hidden Love is about that one sweet crush when you were little. Watching this show sort of brings back memories to when you were a little girl and has that butterfly in your stomach feeling every time this person is near, but he may not know you exist of have the same feeling as you. I was smiling and blushing at the same time at some of the scenes. This is one "feel good" drama that I really enjoyed. It has no major conflict, it's just a simple and sweet romance drama. I thought Zhao Lusi suited this role and played it well. She can be a spoiled brat and sweet at the same time. If you like fluffy romance that makes your heart flutters, you should definitely watch this drama.

Such a good watch. Topic: brothers best friend

Boy was I concerned when I started this drama and the FL looked like a baby while the ML was a full ass grown man.
After watching it I have to say they solved this age gap pretty well.
The ML is a green flag and I fell in love with him BUT the FL was just perfect not only is Zhao Lusi breathtakingly beautiful I also really enjoyed her acting. They really casted a good match.
Not to mention the big brother who was just perfect.
This drama contains the usual long and painful bild up before their first touch but plays it out really well.
I hope you enjoy watching this drama because I sure did.

Favorite Drama of all time

Forever grateful to whatever stars aligned to make me watch Hidden Love. It was the first CDrama I have watched, and I am yet to find another cdrama that can keep me as bewitched by the drama and even the bts. Although the story itself is nothing extraordinary, and there are no real plot-twists etc, the viewer is kept hooked by the sheer chemistry of Chen Zheyuan and Zhao Lusi. Both of them were so beautiful and bewitching, there was no need for anything else. They could have been reading out the recipe to boil potatoes, and we would have been just as hooked. The OST was also chef's kiss. Forever star has become one of those unskippable songs.

No tengo palabras para describir lo que este drama me hizo sentir!
Estoy impresionada, ver como cada vez hay más hombres escritos por mujeres, nunca te decepciona!
Esta historia te llega al corazón, te identificas con el personaje femenino, es dulce y simpática pero no al punto de ser molesta. Y del personaje masculino no puedo decir más que: Él es el estandar, green flag andante, llevava mucho tiempo sin ver un personaje que realmente te haga pensar: ¿porqué no hay más hombres así en el mundo real? (se imaginan, sería todo un sueño), este tipo de romance te hace elevar tus expectativas!
Pensé que iba a ser aburrido ya que no hay muchos giros en la trama, pero ver el proceso de enamoramiento de ambos fue muy agradable, nada forzado, es muy llevadero, te hace querer saber que va a pasar y les deseas lo mejor a cada uno. Simplemente encantador!
Y los personajes secundarios 10/10.

Well-written, light and heartwarming drama

Tbh, I seldom watch Chinese dramas, let alone write reviews, but I think this drama deserves my review. It is a very well-written, light and heartwarming drama about a young girl who had a crush (or "puppy love" as they called it) on her brother's best friend when she was a teenager, which develops into genuine and unconditional love for him when she enters university and becomes an adult.

I love the storyline, it's simple, light, and heartwarming, without any major villains -- the only so-called "villains" would be the ML's ex-creditor who kept on harassing him, and her friend who happened to be the FL's superior in the company where she's interned, and some schoolgirl bullies who bullied the FL's friend when they were still at school.

The rest are all positive characters with heartwarming relationships and their respective chemistries. I love the brother-sister relationship between FL and her brother, as well as between FL and her brother's friend with whom she is secretly having feelings. Love how they act as protective elder brothers to protect their mei mei from bullies. Love the bickering between the elder brother and the younger sister. Their acting is awesome and feels natural.

I also love the buddy friendship between the ML and the FL's elder brother, as well as the friendship between the FL and her three roommates at the university. I also love the FL's parents, both the mom and dad are portrayed as ideal parents who eventually are very supportive of their daughter.

Everything is being portrayed warmly. I believe this is partly due to the amazing acting performance of the actors, not only the main actors but the supporting actors as well. Their acting is awesome and feels natural. The main lead actress, Zhao Lusi, stands out for being able to portray the main FL character from her teenage years until she graduates from university. She is very pretty, cute and adorable. I also love the acting of the SML Victor Ma, who portrays the FL's elder brother. His bickering and interaction with her little sister (both the young and the adult version of the sister) is very heartwarming to watch - thanks to his superior acting skills.

Another thing, the younger FL character is depicted to be 14 years old (8th grade), but the young actress portraying the character (Zhang Xi Wei) seems to be younger, around 11-12 years old, I think? Her acting is awesome for a child actress her age, it's always a delight watching her on screen in the earlier episodes. I predict she will become an amazing great actress when she grows up.

It's a highly recommended drama everyone should watch.

This had just the right amount of everything (young love, sad and tragic past for ML, true love, belief in the goodness of the other person, having that person realize that they're worth it..... overcomes all obstacles making a person whole again, giving purpose, dedication and happiness). Actors did an amazing job portraying their respective characters. Loved the Male and Female lead (the chemistry and the way they interacted with each other felt like a real love story) and along with all supporting characters.

Overall 10 rating as I can't give any critique. Rewatch value 10.

ep 4 she says tht she is in love with him ..7 she finds out that he is dating some1 so she goes to Yihe as excuse to meet her online dating guy and sees tht duan jiaxu is with a girl and she is unhappy abt it and cries thinking tht she is his gf..n how he broke her promise tht he will tell her when he is dating some1…9 she find out tht he is unwell so she hurries to his office n while waiting 4 taxi he accidently kisses her on the forehead..and takes him to the hosp..10 she takes care of him in the hosp n all..n she takes revenge or splashes back the water to the obsessive gurl (was too cool) they have a moment..11 he thinks of her not in sister way and is worried for her..12 whn he found tht she is drunk at a bar he comes together…tht state she blurts out that she likes some1 and tht he is nice to her n every1 basically she describes him without saying the name and thn he asks her while she is sleeping in car tht if he can "is it ok if i become like him.."..omg..my
