Definitely A must watch

I watched this drama mainly because of the male lead, Ryan Cheng, but I ended up loving everything about it! The female lead was charming, and all the supporting actors delivered great performances. The production quality, visuals, and costumes were amazing. The story was engaging, emotional, and well-paced from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

Sizzling chemistry

This drama is about the talented painter Shi Qi who is blackmailed into marrying general Xiao Han Sheng by pretending to be the Prime Minister’s daughter, Shen Qin. Shi Qi wears ShenQin’s face due to magic and when she meets Han Sheng she realizes he is a familiar face from her past, only now he doesn’t recognize her.

The director of this drama seems to have a strong connection to water and the drips of rain runs like a theme throughout the drama. The cinematography is great leading to a suggestive aesthetic that builds tension. Many normally cliché ingredients are reinvented, fireflies and stars in a dark night has never felt to fresh before. It’s just there, creating an atmosphere whiteout forcing it upon the viewer.

The story is intertwined with throw backs into the two main leads past and that often makes me wanna fast forward but not in this drama. Here the past draws me in and I always want to know more and see more. The drama is full of tension and it is well balanced with softer moments that is complemented by nice music. There are also a few comical episodes in this drama and it works well since it often include a child and that makes the comedy feels natural.
I find no unnecessary scenes and every event brings the story forward.

The actor who plays Han Sheng, Ryan Cheng, has the unique ability to appear soft with a fierce face which creates great depth to his character. I find him very talented and can’t wait to see him get a lead role in a major drama. His facial expressions are very captivating. He is the dreamy devoted man we all want in our life. We get some amazing scenes between him and Ke Ying, who plays Shi Qin. Scenes that are some of the best I have seen when it comes to chemistry. It’s hot! It would be enough even without the skin ship, their faces conveyes plenty. That’s how good these scenes are.

This drama is in every way as good as many full length major dramas and I am looking forward to see what this director will come up with next.

This is my first review her on MDL and it is my second time watching this drama, that’s why I know the rewatch value is great.

goosebumps

I never really liked dramas that involve face swapping but i made an exception for this cause the thumbnail, casts and everything attracted me and i'm glad i did. Cause when i tell you i gasped I GASPED it was so good??? Like the chemistry between the leads were over the roof and the twist got me shocked never would i have thought that that would happen.

I was so sad for the second couple but when you see them back as "doppelgangers" and having a relationship that they deserved got me so happy everyone got the ending that they deserved.

And i also love the fact that there was no toxicity at all in the main leads relationship they never jumped to conclusions and the male lead was so understanding like i enjoyed every second of them.

so overall if you're wondering whether to watch this or not go for it i beg this mini drama does not disappoint. These mini dramas are getting better than those long ones i swear.

The Drama you will want to have 40 eps!

Story Wise: It's too short for me that I wanted more, I wanted to have this an extension, and expansion of character's POVs and dialogues, more casts, more sense of depth in the case and to the face swapping of the 3 characters, like IT IS MINDBLOWING that I want it to have more than just 18 eps😭😔💜

Cast Wise: I can't believe CL here, the versatility he really has since he started is really consistent, the quality of his acting here is the quality of his acting in his latest projects with that consistency, you'll really feel he love his job and knows how to ACT. Same with Ying Ke, watched her several projects made me realize she really can do the charcter she portrays very well!!!! Both of them have an aura that can bear the role of Pro and Antagonistic Characters, they really delivered this pairing😭🎀💅

The Mini-Drama That Had No Right Being This Good

I’m genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed My Familiar Stranger. Going in, I had very low expectations because it’s a short drama, and a lot of mini-dramas tend to feel low-budget or rushed. You can often tell when corners have been cut in the production, but that really wasn’t the case here.

What surprised me most is that this easily could have worked as a full-length drama. The story has enough potential, the cast is strong enough, and the chemistry is definitely there. Maybe part of the reason it works so well is because it’s so direct and fast-paced. It jumps right into the story, there’s no dragging, and you never really have time to get bored. At around four hours total, it’s an incredibly easy binge-watch.

Does the story always make sense? Not really. But honestly, I didn’t care. It was entertaining enough that I was willing to overlook the logic gaps. It actually reminded me a lot of In Blossom, but in some ways I think this was executed better. Everything moves quickly, the atmosphere is engaging, and the show never loses momentum.

The cast was absolutely spot-on. I do have to mention Cheng Lei because I’m admittedly biased—I love that man. While I think this is probably one of the weaker performances compared to what he’s capable of now, it was still very good. Looking back, you can clearly see how much he has grown as an actor over the years. His recent projects showcase a much more refined performance, but even here he was charismatic and easy to watch.

The female lead also did a solid job. I’ve seen her before, and while nothing about the performance completely blew me away, she delivered what the role needed. What really carried the drama, though, was the chemistry between the leads. I was not expecting it to hit as hard as it did, but they worked incredibly well together. The romantic tension, the steamy moments, and their overall dynamic were some of the strongest parts of the show.

Even the supporting characters were enjoyable. The drama isn’t trying to tell a deeply complex story, nor is it particularly political or heavy. It’s simply an entertaining watch that knows exactly what it wants to be. Unlike many mini-dramas that can feel cheap or disposable, this one actually feels like there was real effort put into it. The production quality is surprisingly decent, the costumes are lovely, and overall everything looks polished.

My biggest complaint is honestly that it’s so short. I kept wishing there were more episodes because the drama had the potential to become something much bigger. With a longer runtime, I think it could have been a genuinely great full-length series.

The ending is probably the one area that didn’t fully land for me. It wasn’t bad, but I do think it could have offered a stronger sense of closure. Still, that wasn’t enough to significantly affect my enjoyment.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend My Familiar Stranger. It’s a quick, entertaining binge with great chemistry, some steamy moments, a solid storyline, and absolutely no filler. If you’re looking for something light, engaging, and easy to finish in a single day, this is a perfect choice. It’s basically four hours of pure dopamine.

Slow start for me

This must be one of Ryan Cheng's earlier dramas. He looks a lot younger. I am having a hard time getting into the story. Perhaps it's because I just finished my first ever Ryan Cheng drama, "Legend of a Female General" where he just seems more convincing as a general. It could also be because this is a short drama. It works in modern settings as I have seen a few. Not sure if it works as well in historical.settings. Anyway, I will continue watching the drama just to finish it because it's not too long.

Well written Storyline

“A Familiar Stranger was one of those rare short Chinese dramas that managed to feel intense, emotional, and beautifully cinematic despite its shorter runtime. The story immediately pulls you in with its themes of identity, betrayal, revenge, and unexpected love. Even with limited episodes, the drama never felt empty because every scene carried emotion and purpose.

What made the drama stand out most was the atmosphere. The lighting, music, costumes, and camera work gave it a dreamlike and almost haunting beauty. Many scenes felt more like watching a movie than a short drama. The emotional tension between the leads was especially strong, filled with longing, suspicion, tenderness, and pain.

The female lead’s situation was heartbreaking because she was forced to live under another identity while carrying fear and loneliness inside. Yet she remained intelligent and emotionally strong instead of helpless. The male lead also surprised me because beneath his cold and calculating exterior, there was genuine care and emotional depth. Their relationship slowly shifting from distrust to love was one of the best parts of the story.

Another thing I appreciated was that the drama did not waste time with unnecessary side plots. The pacing stayed focused and emotional, making every episode meaningful. The chemistry between the leads carried the story beautifully, especially in the quieter scenes where emotions were shown more through expressions and silence than words.

Overall, A Familiar Stranger is a hidden gem among Chinese short dramas. It is visually stunning, emotionally intense, and filled with romance, sorrow, and mystery. For anyone who enjoys historical dramas with darker emotional undertones and strong chemistry between the leads, this drama is definitely worth watching.”

Satisfying short drama

Got time to spare? Try these short drama. As someone not into romance, this is good.

These actresses weren't known to me but they portrayed their roles very very well! I was able to feel the difference in vibe even after the face swap. (This is hard to nail. I've watch a couple of personality change dramas and I can say this is so far the best.)
Amazing for those 2 NEW actresses. Actors were good too like the general and prince. I dunno but the general gives me Ren JiaLun vibe and at some angles, I see their similarities.

Nice costume and production quality. Obviously not draggy. More appreciation for new actresses and actors.

Coppia carina e affiatata, trama deludente

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A well developed short drama, good plot and a decent cast. I usually don't identify much with C Dramas because I think the episodes are too long and that usually tires me, I also confess that the drmas too short don't fill my eyes, but I had a sweet surprise when watching this drama, the story is engaging and keeps you interested from start to finish.

The characters have chemistry, and they played their roles nicely. The general and his wife's love was very beautiful, I liked it a lot because here we don't have time for those bad guys and unnecessary nitpicking. The protagonists are smart and know what they want and how to protect themselves.

Finally, I recommend this drama to you.
