Political Intrigue and Romance—Perfectly Executed
This is one of my favorite watches. It balances political intrigue and conspiracies, revenge, fantasy, romance, and transmigration. The narrative is succinct and well-paced, engaging and poetic. The drama is executed well, the wardrobe and settings or props are beautiful. I don't have anything negative to say about this drama. I enjoyed every minute this was on-screen.Was this review helpful to you?
Great Cast, Uneven Script & Missed Narrative Potential
This had a lot going for it. The cast was stellar, and their acting was on point. There were many intense and gripping sequences, the fight scenes were dynamite, the second leads were exciting, and the overall narrative was interesting and engaging. However, the script didn’t land for me, and I think this might simply be better suited for a different audience. With the script we got, I struggled with several elements. The character shifts felt a bit abrupt to me—characters introduced as strong and intelligent seemed to devolve too quickly. Strength became weakness, clarity turned into erratic behavior, and loyal personalities veered into exaggerated deceit—all without enough development or transition for me to think those changes were justified. I also had trouble connecting with the motivations behind many character choices. They didn't make sense to me, which made it hard to stay immersed or believe that those decisions aligned with who the characters were. Some conflicts had great build-up, but I felt the climaxes were often followed by weak resolutions or surprisingly easy defeats. Given how much intelligence and planning the villains demonstrated, I expected more complex or difficult take-downs—each one felt too easy to me. There were also a number of filler scenes that dragged the pacing for me, and I found much of the romantic dialogue for the female lead predictable and formulaic—almost like scripted speeches.
This really could have been my cup of tea with a different script, but unfortunately, this is the one I got.

Strong Performances and Psychological Depth: My Top-Shelf Watch of 2025
This received a mixed response from audiences. But for me, it’s a top-shelf watch and my favorite of 2025 so far—I can definitely see myself rewatching it. I loved everything about it from start to finish: the intro, the outro (which I watched every time for its graphics and music), and the entire soundtrack. The overall and individual performances were strong, and the use of different camera angles gave it the feel of a costume avant-garde production. Every detail—from the set design to the dramatic overtures—elevated the narrative and dialogue. Why I loved it:
Each episode was packed with riveting plots and subplots. Even when the people behind the conflicts were obvious, the delivery was so emotionally impactful that the predictability didn’t matter. I especially appreciated the psychological complexity, character dynamics, and growth. It was easy to sympathize with their struggles and become fully invested in their outcomes.
While I’ve heard differing opinions, I thought Chen Duling delivered an impactful performance as a strong lead. The supporting cast also brought such weight to their roles that the lines between main and supporting characters blurred—this series wouldn’t have been the same without every single one of them. I also appreciated the social commentary on women’s issues. Even when certain scenarios felt stilted or unrealistic, the intent and emotional resonance still came through.

Mysterious and Absurd Cases of the Tang Dynasty

Eerie and Spooky: A Hidden Gem Among Tang Mysteries
I absolutely loved this. Guan Yue has starred in several Tang mystery series, and I would consider this one among the top two in his collection and one among all Tang mysteries. Many people enjoyed Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty starring Yang Xuwen and Yang Zhigang, but unfortunately, while I thought it started strong, it dipped into ordinary by the middle. I didn't find anything particularly creepy or strange about the remaining narratives, and I was so disappointed that I didn’t continue on to watch the next two seasons. For me, this drama by far outperforms and outmatches Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, which is why I bring it up as a comparison. I also think this series—along with his other Tang mysteries—proves that a shorter format can be more than enough; short form doesn’t mean the content will feel lacking or incomplete.
I found this drama highly engrossing and impactful. The production never felt low-budget. The short stories didn’t feel dry or repetitive, and the delivery was eerie and haunting throughout. I was invested every second and never felt a dip in pacing or storytelling.
Since I don’t see many people posting about it (apologies if it’s just my algorithm), I have to say this could be a true hidden gem for those who enjoy spooky tales built around an investigative framework. The story follows a trio working together to solve complicated and seemingly supernatural cases: a forensic specialist, a behavioral or scene analyst, and an on-the-ground investigator. I loved their dynamic and how each role brought a distinct expertise to every case they handled.

A Familiar Story Told Exceptionally
I enjoyed this. While there were a few ridiculous stage moves and props, I felt the script and narrative were strong, so it didn't matter. I even read part of the manhua because I that connected with the onscreen performance. I enjoyed the roles, believing the performers played them well and seamlessly. The character dynamics worked so well for me that I was rooting for the leads the entire time. When one of them burned their rivals, I even cheered. The basic storyline isn’t new—it’s about love and betrayal, revenge, and hidden identities. However, the way the leads delivered their stories made the narrative engaging and impactful.

A Storybook Romance That Knows the Script
Normally, I wouldn’t be into something like this. It’s a heavy romance, and they lay it on thick. But several nuances made it work for me. This isn’t meant to represent real-life love or realistic scenery—it’s a storybook version of romance, told through fictional characters who feel stilted because they’re written in that way on purpose. And by following a scripted novel that we see the lead getting pulled into preserves that “author” vibe. It makes it clear that the cheesy delivery is intentional, not because the directors thought that’s what viewers wanted (at least, that was my interpretation—and why the romance felt digestible to me). And whenever the romantic script became a bit too much, it would balance itself out with comedy or a lingering sense of sadness.I do have a few disclaimers, though. I skipped through the second lead’s arc because it felt a bit sleepy to me, even though I know what happens with them. I also really like Wang Yuwen, so I’m more inclined to give her performances a chance. Overall, though, this was a great watch for me. I connected with most of the characters, loved the soundtrack (even if there were only a few songs on repeat), and I really enjoyed the narrative. It had nice angles and a few compelling twists that gave the story depth. The color palette was beautiful, and I loved being transported back to the ’90s. Now I want to watch more circa-1995 dramas!

A Hauntingly Beautiful Story of Love and Sacrifice
This drama examines what it is to be human and the inner workings of emotions and existence. It is ethereal, with foreboding and tense tones that beautifully capture love, the aching need for companionship, and self-sacrifice. It is well-executed and the cast performance matches its caliber. I recommend this to all Guo Jingming fans and to anyone wanting to watch something short and with feeling. Was this review helpful to you?
A Visually Stunning Epic of Love, Power, and Resilience
I absolutely loved this drama — it ticks all the boxes for me. The cinematography, especially the aerial views was stunning and consistently drew me deeper into the story. I was completely enamored with the costume designs, which beautifully reflected the distinctions between different classes and professions. I also appreciated how each character had real depth. It wasn’t easy to hate or dismiss the antagonists, and the protagonists never bored me by being overly self-righteous or domineering. The heroes were flawed but grounded when it truly mattered, while the villains felt like tortured reflections of what the heroes could have become, had they made different choices. And I lived for the romance between the leads. Contrary to some opinions, I found it to be richly woven into the main narrative. From the start, their bond was built through flirty gestures and meaningful actions that conveyed mutual interest, growing respect, emotional intimacy, deep friendship, equal partnership, and ultimately, a soulmate connection and lasting love. I’m the kind of viewer who prefers to see love rather than just hear about it, and I adored how their relationship was portrayed through action and emotion. It made every shared scene between them something to look forward to.Beyond that, the drama offers thoughtful social commentary on class and gender bias, centering its narrative around the hardships faced by low-income individuals, while also juxtaposing these struggles with those of the nobility to explore the lives of women across all hierarchies. It’s a story of survival and resilience — of family, friendship, and community — and I loved watching each character grow as they laid down roots and created a support network they could rely on. Woven between all these thematic elements, there’s palace intrigue — and if you know me, you know I need my fair share of conspiracies and royals vying for power! Overall, this was a huge win for me, and I can absolutely see myself watching it again.

Stellar Performances & Dynamic Storytelling
This was truly a wonderful watch for me. The performances were consistently strong. Both the leads and the supporting cast delivered a full range of difficult emotions and scenes, making it hard to distinguish between major and minor roles. And I found the entire narrative and the performances incredibly dynamic, with a variety of filming techniques that elevated how the story translated onscreen. That’s largely what made this drama work so well.Notably, its gripping storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat and fully immersed. The color palette was equally compelling, shaping the overall experience and how deeply I connected to the scenes. And the cinematography complemented the narrative, with a stepwise progression to the truth that follows a non-linear structure, moving back and forth in time in a way that kept the story from ever feeling sluggish.n
Overall, I found this drama haunting and frustrating in the best way, stirring a wide range of emotions as I watched. I often found myself sympathizing with characters who were, at different times, both villains and victims. By the end, it felt like I had experienced an epic journey, despite the drama being only 18 episodes long.

It Grew on Me … But Not Enough
I’m sorry, folks, but this just wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m also watching the donghua and reading the novel, both of which I’m really engaged in. However, I struggled with this micro-drama and dropped it last year. After giving it another go this time around, I noticed it grew on me the longer I watched.I think the basic storyline is interesting, and some of the details were funny or ridiculous—even unique to transmigration or “sucked-into-a-book” narratives. The ending reveal was also nicely executed and would have been gripping, putting the whole drama on its head, had I not already been spoiled. Unfortunately, though, the overall delivery and the silly banter just didn’t land for me.

Missed the Mark on Me
I’m a huge Yan Zixian fan. I’ve watched 19 of his dramas (and dropped three of them). But I’m sorry, folks—this just wasn’t my cup of tea. The beginning was fun despite its rough edges, but then it devolved into a low-budget disappointment. The banter was funny, and I liked all the characters, especially the main leads and the emperor. There were unique nuances to the premise that made me laugh and kept me engaged. But overall, the drama felt flat. Sometimes an underwhelming production can be elevated by a strong script or a powerful storyline—if one is lacking, the other can make up for it. Unfortunately, neither was delivered here. Was this review helpful to you?
A Visually Rich, Art-Forward Watch
I watched this without subtitles and still greatly enjoyed it, which speaks to how visually expressive and thoughtfully crafted it is. The storytelling relies less on heavy dialogue and more on mood, atmosphere, and visual composition. Emotion is conveyed through framing, pacing, and the deliberate use of color, allowing the audience to feel the narrative even without understanding every word. That said, it may not be for everyone. This is best suited for the eclectic viewer—someone who appreciates aesthetics as much as plot, who enjoys artistic or unconventional narratives, and who notices the intentional use of specific color palettes to signal tone, character dynamics, or emotional shifts. It’s the kind of experience where patience is rewarded, and the beauty lies as much in how the story is told as in the story itself.

Great Setup, Gradual Decline
This is another drama that started off great but became incompatible for me around the middle. I loved the beginning—the character growth and the buildup to the conflicts were strong—but some of those conflicts didn’t follow through enough for me. The storyline gradually diluted the female lead’s strength, shifting focus to family dynamics and romance. I started skipping through it around episode +23 and finished it through highlights. The ending makes a nice recovery with an interesting twist, but I personally struggled to stay engaged long enough to get there without skipping. That said, I really did enjoy the supporting cast. Was this review helpful to you?
Original and Engaging, but Uneven Acting
I enjoyed this drama, though I wouldn’t call it the strongest production overall. Some performances felt stilted or overly dramatic at times, and certain moments of dialogue fell flat or came across as amateur. That said, the storyline and subplots are genuinely engaging, and the pacing keeps things moving without dragging. What really stands out is the originality of the narrative—there are some surprising twists, especially toward the end, and I wasn’t disappointed by the reveal. The only downside is that the ending sets up the possibility of a second season, but as of now, there’s been no news confirming a sequel.

A Hidden Gem, Worth the Watch
I really loved this one. I think it’s a nice little gem for an early Luo Yunxi watch. I’m not very familiar with the KO series, but this is a spin-off, and I had so much fun with it. Though not every scene was a win—I skipped through a bit of the beginning dialogue—I was engaged with pretty much the rest of the series.I found myself laughing through the first half, which relied heavily on comedic and offbeat delivery. I also loved the supporting cast, who did a great job elevating the humor. I thought the overall dynamics between the characters worked so well that I ended up loving many of their roles. Near the halfway mark, some of the groundwork woven into the humorous moments began to take over, and the narrative segued into a more serious turn. This shift carried through the second half of the drama and
