Missed the Mark on Me
I’m a huge Yan Zixian fan. I’ve watched 19 of his dramas (and dropped three of them). But I’m sorry, folks—this just wasn’t my cup of tea. The beginning was fun despite its rough edges, but then it devolved into a low-budget disappointment. The banter was funny, and I liked all the characters, especially the main leads and the emperor. There were unique nuances to the premise that made me laugh and kept me engaged. But overall, the drama felt flat. Sometimes an underwhelming production can be elevated by a strong script or a powerful storyline—if one is lacking, the other can make up for it. Not Perfect—But Perfect for Me
This drama isn’t perfect, but it was perfect for me. A big reason is that Luo Yunxi plays the lead role. His performances are always strong, elegant, and beautiful to watch. I love how he transforms in costume dramas—I think his transitions are seamless, even in lower-rated series. His background as a ballet dancer gives him an air of sophistication, and his footwork is impeccable—he could be blindfolded and still not make a mistake. His role is a major reason I enjoyed this drama.I’m not sure how others would feel if they don’t appreciate Luo Yunxi’s skill set. The narrative itself is engaging, but there were several moments where the misunderstandings were overplayed, making me dislike the female lead, and the story stalled as a result. The conflicts that kept the leads apart dragged on too long, and I found myself wishing those parts had been edited down to give the narrative a tighter pace. While I would recommend watching it, I think its audience might be limited to people who can easily forgive tropes. The storyline is heavily focused on the pugilist world and martial arts sects, so it might also be best suited for viewers who enjoy martial arts and wuxia-themed dramas

Richly Told & Visually Compelling
This short is only seven minutes long, but it feels incredibly rich. The film has a vibrant color palette, a distinctive visual scope, and storytelling that is raw and personal. It carries you through a continuum from childhood to adulthood, drawing you into the protagonist’s life and allowing you to feel the pendulum swing between the highs and lows of lived experience and self-growth.Although its aim is to be reflective with a central moral, the delivery never feels trite or heavy-handed. It doesn’t come across as if someone is trying to teach you a lesson or trample on your own life experiences. Even at just seven minutes, it stands out as a top-shelf watch—for its aesthetics, artistry, and script.

An Epic Story Undercut by Its Execution
I have such a love-hate relationship with this drama. If it hadn’t been a Guo Jingming adaptation, I wouldn’t have tried so hard to stick with it. It held so much promise for me, but the execution, pacing, and some of the side plots didn’t quite land. The narrative itself was truly epic: wonderfully layered and poignant. When viewed as a continuum—tracking what happened to the characters and how much their lives had changed from the people we met at the start—the ending becomes incredibly impactful. Their trajectory, character growth, and the life challenges they faced added a depth that really drew me in.Unfortunately, it was weighed down by uneven execution and common cinematic tropes—especially the overuse of memory sequences. That said, I can still see the potential in this drama and the elements that were truly compelling or kept me emotionally invested. So while this wasn’t a win for me, I don’t regret spending so much time on it.

This received a mixed response from audiences. But for me, it’s a top-shelf watch and my favorite of 2025 so far—I can definitely see myself rewatching it. I loved everything about it from start to finish: the intro, the outro (which I watched every time for its graphics and music), and the entire soundtrack. The overall and individual performances were strong, and the use of different camera angles gave it the feel of a costume avant-garde production. Every detail—from the set design to the dramatic overtures—elevated the narrative and dialogue.Why I loved it:
Each episode was packed with riveting plots and subplots. Even when the people behind the conflicts were obvious, the delivery was so emotionally impactful that the predictability didn’t matter. I especially appreciated the psychological complexity, character dynamics, and growth. It was easy to sympathize with their struggles and become fully invested in their outcomes.
While I’ve heard differing opinions, I thought Chen Duling delivered an impactful performance as a strong lead. The supporting cast also brought such weight to their roles that the lines between main and supporting characters blurred—this series wouldn’t have been the same without every single one of them. I also appreciated the social commentary on women’s issues. Even when certain scenarios felt stilted or unrealistic, the intent and emotional resonance still came through.

One of Those Dramas That Gets Better and Better Each Episode
This was a strange watch for me. I didn't enjoy the beginning, yet I kept going because I felt there was something worth exploring. That has only happened to me with one other drama, where I struggled with the opening episodes but sensed a strong core—and eventually ended up loving it. The same thing happened here.The beginning felt rushed, almost as if I were watching at 2x speed even though I watched it at normal playback. It made it difficult for me to connect with the story. However, as I continued, I realized that the rebirth premise only sets the larger story in motion rather than being the focus. As the narrative unfolds, the story is really a game of 围棋 (wéiqí), filled with palace schemes, power struggles, court politics, internal conflicts, and tensions between rival kingdoms. These forces shape not only political decisions and alliances but also the personal lives of those caught within them.
Those are the elements that kept me engaged. It wasn't the romance or even the protagonist that drew me in. Instead, I found myself invested in the larger narrative—the palace attendants, the foot soldiers, the strategic maneuvering both in court and beyond it, and the sense of duty that often demands sacrifice from those carrying the weight of greater responsibilities.
With each episode, I became more invested as the story found its footing and expanded in scope. While I initially felt the main leads had the weakest storyline, they underwent so much growth that it was rewarding to watch, and I came to admire their strength, resilience, and loyalty. Overall, this ended up being a drama I enjoyed far more than I expected.

A Dark & Psychological Piece That Pushes Limits
The performances in this drama were masterful—raw, realistic, and emotionally gripping. The character development was gradual and immersive, drawing me in before I even realized how invested I’d become. Despite that, this was a difficult watch and definitely not for everyone.While this is heavy subject matter, it didn’t feel exploitative. That said, it explores the darkest sides of human behavior—mental health struggles, manipulation, enabling, mind control, assault, toxic relationships, and delusional thinking. Though I understood the characters’ backstories and motivations, it was an emotionally taxing narrative, and I grew to deeply resent both main leads and the destruction they caused.
It’s been compared to Goodbye My Princess, but Love & Bid Farewell is even more disturbing and traumatic. Watching this depends on the viewer’s sensitivity to the subject matter, and trigger warnings are essential.

A Fresh Take on a Familiar Transmigration Setup
I just loved this drama—and it completely took me by surprise. I don't think I had any preconceived notions going in, but I definitely didn’t expect to fall in love with the narrative the way I did. It follows the familiar “sucked-into-the-novel” storyline and sticks to the usual script. But what I really appreciated was that, despite using a familiar prototype, the drama introduced subtle nuances that made it feel fresh. Each episode delivered engaging side plots and character-driven stories through cases and investigations. And that style was a win for me.I also found the entire drama hilarious, and the romance hit all the right notes for me—authentic, gradual, and never forced or cliché. I especially loved the family dynamics and the emotional growth, both within each character and between them. The execution was solid, the performances were strong, and the quality remained consistent throughout the series.

A Slow-Burn Mystery That Unfolded Across Families and Generations
Yes, this took me a year to finish. I started it when it first dropped and was excited—but this is my life now: It can take me a long time to finish anything over 26 episodes depending on my periphery. However, I loved it.I've heard many people say they found this dry and slow, but I often wonder if it released at the wrong time. It followed The Double, which I ended up dropping—even though most people were enthralled by its high-stakes thrills and fast-paced plot. I would imagine anything would have a hard time following it. With that in mind, Follow Your Heart definitely lives in its own space. And I loved it for its meandering, thoughtful storytelling. It gave me time to connect with the day-to-day lives of the characters and to fully appreciate their evolving relationships and growth. Hot-headed characters matured and found redemption, broken ties were mended, and families and friends came together under pressure and common threats. I also really enjoyed the overarching conflict that spanned generations and multiple families. It unraveled gradually, with smaller culprits leading up to a major one—who ended up being a huge surprise. Based on critiques, I don't know if this is for everyone, but it was for me.

A VR-Inspired Drama That Didn’t Fully Work for Me Despite Good Supporting Moments
I love Wu Tianho and Li Geyang, so I really wanted to enjoy this. Unfortunately, it didn’t fully work for me. I did enjoy some of the supporting roles—especially the fourth prince and the Duke’s aide, who provided genuinely funny and memorable comedic moments. However, beyond that, I wasn’t very invested in the overall story, and it didn’t hold my attention in the way I had hoped. While the actors are clearly skilled, the drama itself just wasn’t the right fit for me.That said, if you enjoy VR-themed stories or NPC-style narratives, this might still be worth checking out.

A Riveting and Emotional Fantasy Elevated by Exceptional Acting
Wow. This features some of the best performances across the board. The story is riveting, touching, and beautifully executed, paired with a well-crafted script. There were so many high points that kept me glued to every moment, eager to see how everything unfolded. With a perfect balance between comedic and more emotional elements, I still rewatch certain clips to this day to relive the standout moments.While I was genuinely blown away by many of the actors, and I can’t praise them enough for how fully and skillfully they embodied their roles, I skipped most scenes with Deng Wei—otherwise, I probably would have dropped the show. However, this was a truly dynamic and memorable watch for me. I have it rated very high on my list.

One of My Favorite Chinese Historical Comedies
This is one of my top ten favorite Chinese dramas and among my favorite miniseries. When I first started watching it, I was initially unsure about the tone and setup, but it quickly became clear that it leans heavily into comedy with a much more playful and layered approach than expected.The story follows a general who becomes involved in efforts tied to a larger political situation, which naturally pulls her into the orbit of a mysterious and unconventional figure connected to a covert group. While the premise sounds serious, the execution is primarily comedic, with strong character dynamics and humor driving much of the appeal. Despite the light tone, the relationships and interactions feel engaging and surprisingly compelling, which makes it easy to stay invested. The pacing remains consistently strong without noticeable drag, and the underlying political tension adds depth without overwhelming the comedy.
Overall, I highly recommend it if you enjoy character-driven historical comedies with a mix of humor, intrigue, and strong ensemble dynamics.

My Top-Tiered with Outstanding Martial Arts Choreography
I truly loved this drama — it’s top-tier for me.Set in the pugilist world, the story is deeply rooted in martial arts sects and cultivation levels, with an emphasis on layered power dynamics, strategy, and rivalries. I wasn’t expecting to be so drawn in, but I found myself completely mesmerized early on. The fight choreography and footwork are especially impressive, making the martial arts sequences a highlight throughout.
The narrative is packed with intrigue across both main and side plots, with multiple revenge arcs and sharply written characters who often operate with strategy and intent. While the large cast and their shifting significance can sometimes be challenging to keep track of, the complexity also adds depth to the world. The story maintains strong momentum, with a structure that reminded me of Nirvana in Fire meets Dominator of Martial Gods, especially in how it balances schemes, alliances, and unfolding revelations.
What stood out most to me is how well the drama handles its character balance. Although it centers on a male protagonist, many of the most compelling figures are women — both allies and antagonists — who are skilled, decisive, and fully integrated into the martial arts world. Even the villains are engaging, often given motivations that make them feel layered rather than one-dimensional.
Overall, it’s a tightly built martial arts sect drama with strong cultivation-world atmosphere, excellent action choreography, and a consistently engaging narrative. The only caveat is that it’s not romance-heavy, so viewers looking for a strong romantic focus may not find that here — but for fans of sect politics, strategy, and martial arts storytelling, it’s highly rewarding.

Palace Intrigue Done Exceptionally Well
I absolutely loved this. I typically struggle with Ren Jialun’s performances, but I have to say this one is a top-shelf favorite of mine. Everything worked—even when it didn't.While the overall narrative wasn’t entirely new, with its focus on palace infighting and conspiracies, the execution was so effective that I was fully absorbed, hanging on every line and plot turn. I loved the rich martial arts and the bold characters whose power and potential weren’t limited by gender. Each character captured my attention and drew me into their storylines in impactful ways that stayed with me throughout the drama. I was truly invested in their lives, and I appreciated the multiple layers in both the plot development and the character growth as they navigated identity and relationship dynamics.
This drama isn’t perfect—there were a few moments that made me raise a brow—but everything else made up for what became minor flaws. This is a 10/10 win for me.

One of My Top 5 Chinese Dramas
This is one of my top 5 Chinese dramas. I loved the tones, the filming style, the cast, the wardrobe, the plots, the side plots, the twists, the anti-hero roles, the character development, the footwork, and the soundtrack. The only thing I didn't love was how it ended on a cliffhanger without a confirmed season 2. But this watch was worth it to me.
