Parental Love is the Greatest Love
Just when you thought your life has been hard, always remember that your parents had face much more worst than what you can imagine. That was one lesson I've picked up from When Life Gives You Tangerine. This drama highlights unconditional love that parents have towards their children. It depicts what a mother and a father can give in order to provide the best kind of life for them.
Moreover, this also proves that marriage is not scary if you marry someone like Gwansik. Someone who is ever willing to give up everything, his life, enjoyment, what he wants just to help Aesun out.
Overall this drama is such a great tribute to the greatest persons of our lives, our loving parents. A way to remind us of their sacrifices and what they have went through. Love your parents always.

The unexpected drama that captivated me
I never thought I’d fall so deeply in love with a drama that wasn’t set in high school or didn’t center only around high school romance. That used to be my comfort zone, and I truly believed nothing else could ever top those kinds of stories. But because of the hype around When Life Gives You Tangerines, I decided to give it a try—without much expectation. After watching episode 1, I thought, Okay, this is good. But by episode 2, I was completely hooked. GwanSik and Ae Sun’s story pulled me in, and I couldn’t stop watching. One particular episode that stayed with me forever was when GwanSik wanted to marry Ae Sun, but she had dreams of being rich and independent. She was supposed to go on a blind date with a man from the mainland—something she didn’t truly want, but with a crumbled heart, she went ahead with it. Deep down, Ae Sun actually wanted GwanSik, but her mind pushed her toward something else. But then, she suddenly had a change of heart. While GwanSik was on the ship, heading toward his future, Ae Sun came running to the port and called out his name. And in one of the most powerful scenes I’ve ever seen, GwanSik jumped from the ship and swam through the middle of the ocean to reach her. I honestly thought it was a dream—most dramas make moments like that imaginary—but no, it really happened. And that made me incredibly happy.
This drama shattered all my expectations. I cried rivers and oceans while watching it. The love, the sacrifices, the raw emotion—everything hit so deeply. GwanSik set a new standard for what a husband and father should be. Despite being poor, he treated his wife like a queen and loved his daughter with everything he had. Even after death, his presence remained in the little things. When Life Gives You Tangerines is not just a drama—it’s an experience. It has officially become my number one favorite, and I genuinely wish it gets the worldwide recognition it deserves.

When Life Gives You Tangerines: A Bittersweet Mirror of Every Chapter I’ve Lived
I cannot remember the last time I cried over a K-Drama. I think I stopped crying over movies and series when life hit me hard, so no matter how heartbreaking the show is, nothing beats the drama IRL.'When Life Gives You Tangerines' is typically not my usual K-Drama Genre, but when I saw that the lead actors are two of my favorites (IU & Park Bo Gum), no questions asked, I instantly watched it! Not to mention, Kim Seon Ho??? I know right? I didn't look up the cast, so when I saw him, I did not believe my eyes. After seeing his smile trend on TikTok, I realized it was actually him!
I have invested so much emotion in this show. Just like Ae Sun, I used to love writing. Writing helped me survive high school; it was my outlet, and the pen was my friend. I would write my heart out in the journals for our English subject, and I would feel huge relief afterward. But during college, when the pandemic hit, the fire in me started fading away, and one day... I just woke up, and I didn't care anymore. In high school, when I wanted to be saved, that is why I never stopped writing; it was a cry for help. But in college, I just didn't want to be saved anymore. Of course, I still had an outlet, turning an impossible dream into today's career. I was happy with what I have achieved with that ambition, but something is still missing. There is still a gap in my heart. (Which later turned out to be a condition according to my shrink, but that story is for another time.)
This K-Drama has broken my heart so many times. Somewhere between the subtle storytelling and the heart-wrenching silences, I found myself thinking of my mom. Of all the times, she chose to stay strong when the world gave her every reason to fall apart. Every scene felt like a memory I'd forgotten: how we used to ride the bus to her work in Pampanga, how she would take me to SM after that, how she never let me run out of CDs to watch (because I loved watching movies as a child), and how she carried dreams she never got to chase — all so I could chase mine. This reminded me of how love isn't always loud. Sometimes, it whispers, trying to hold everything together.
And tangerine as a metaphor? Sweet on the outside, but sometimes unexpectedly sour, just like life. Just like us. This K-Drama is a quiet reminder that even in pain, there's beauty. And in memories, even the ones that hurt, there's something worth holding on to, because that is what made us into the people we are today.
If you've ever felt lost, left behind, or nostalgic for who you used to be... this one will break your heart. (And it's gonna be worth it!)

it's a love letter
there's only a few productions around the world that can tell about mother's-daughter's love in such a significant and deep and real way. you can tell that everyone involved in the creation of this drama has such great love and understanding of life in such a poetic way, showing the love of generations of family. every character is it's own world of flaws and complexity but you can see it's just the effect of so much love and dreams happening inside of them.after warching this you'll see life in a different way. and also probably call your mom/dad

Oh my God. This is literally a masterpiece that closes the gap between the uncommunicated generational trauma that our parents carry. I started treating my family much better after I watched this.I cried EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE, from start to finish. That has never happened before. Im not a crier. Its the most beautiful, healing, artistic, poetic, symbolic, piece of literature that I have ever consumed. The way the story is told makes rewatching it so much more enjoyable, but Im not going to hurt myself like that.

Memories, Choices, Passage of time
The cycle of life, wrapped in warmth and silence. It will find the part of you that remembers — being a child, a parent, or simply human, and quietly break you open. When life gives you tangerines, it’s not just about fruit — it’s about time.
This drama doesn’t shout. It doesn’t race. It unfolds gently, like seasons turning, like the slow ripening of fruit on a tree. When Life Gives You Tangerines is a meditation — on family, memory, and the subtle, painful, beautiful transitions that define being alive.
Set against the soft, rural backdrop of Jeju Island, the story weaves through the lives of an ordinary family, made extraordinary by its honesty. It doesn’t rely on dramatic twists or flashy plotlines. Instead, it leans into the everyday — peeling tangerines, setting the table, walking home and from these small acts, it builds something quietly profound.
If you’ve ever been the eldest child, carrying the weight of unspoken expectations… if you’ve been the youngest, aching to be seen… if you’ve been a mother trying to hold a family together, or a father lost in silence, this story will speak to you.
There is no rush here. Just a steady unfolding. Grief, love, forgiveness — not in grand declarations, but in glances, pauses, and the things left unsaid.
This drama isn’t for everyone. But if you’re someone who finds beauty in simplicity, who cherishes the still moments and the space between words — When Life Gives You Tangerines will stay with you, long after it ends.
Because sometimes, tangerines are more than just fruit. They’re time, memory, and everything we never say out loud.

More Than Just a Drama—A Heartfelt Lesson on Love and Family
I have watched many K-dramas before, but I never felt the need to write a review—until now. I’ve always watched for entertainment, but this drama moved me so deeply that I had to share my thoughts. If you love your parents or have ever hurt them—intentionally or unintentionally—this drama is a must-watch. It will change the way you see them and make you realize the struggles they’ve endured just to give their children a comfortable life, without expecting anything in return.
Beyond family, the love story between the two leads is incredibly touching. It beautifully portrays that love isn't just about saying "I love you" every day—it’s about showing it through actions. In fact, I think this is the first drama I’ve watched where the leads never even say those three words to each other because their efforts and devotion speak for themselves. Their love is pure, selfless, and deeply moving.
I guarantee that if you relate to this drama from the first episode, you will find yourself in tears throughout all 16 episodes. As an elder daughter, I connected with it on a personal level—it made me realize how much my parents have sacrificed and that I haven’t done enough for them yet. It has inspired me to work harder so I can give them the comfortable life they deserve.
Lastly, kudos to the writers, director, actors, and every person involved in bringing this masterpiece to life. They have done a phenomenal job, and this drama will always hold a place in my top five.

Like A Tangerine: Sweet With A Touch Of Tartness
This drama gently breaks your heart, then wraps it in warmth. It’s poetic without trying too hard — just simple, real, and deeply human. The story captures life’s quiet moments: grief that lingers, love that heals, and how even the smallest things — like the smell of citrus — can carry the weight of memory.
It’s not loud or flashy, but it hits you where it matters. An emotional journey that lingers long after the final scene.

A crowd-pleaser by default
Striking retro visuals with quite a standard and straightforward storyline, almost like some documentary of sorts, but that's customary due to its referencing from a true story. The nostalgia setting is attractive enough to watch though the plot can get as annoying as it could, till a point that it gets really flat throughout the second half of the drama. It's a well built family issue drama that doesn't go anywhere groundbreaking, but the faithful theme and acting performance is a stronger suit that makes this a crowd-pleaser by default. Was this review helpful to you?
RESONANT JOURNEY OF LOVE AND LOSS
I found myself attached to the characters from the very start. Ae Sun's journey is written beautifully. She feels real, flawed, and achingly true to life. Geum Myeong, her daughter was another I loved. She reminded me of Ae Sun, ambitious, full of hope, yet weighed down by choices and circumstances. What makes this drama so special is honesty. It doesn't romanticized life, it shows the pain, the losses, and the regrets, but also the beauty of love that lasts even through hardship. This drama reminded me that even if life isn't perfect, it can still be meaningful and full of love. I liked the reincarnation hint and the ending was satisfying.
Kudos to the production team and the casts. The direction was tender yet moving, letting silence speak as much words. And the writing was honest and heartbreaking, and made this story linger with me for a long time.

Overrated
This show has clearly received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unfortunately, I cannot agree with this sentiment. Of course this is my subjective opinion, as all reviews are.So, here is my attempt to express precisely what my problems with this show are:
1) The timeline - The show has a habit of constantly skipping around the timeline. While telling the story in a chronological order isn't strictly necessary, this show just takes it too far. As a casual viewer I was often left disoriented and confused by this. This is exacerbated by the use of the same actors to represent characters for very long intervals of time.
2) The characters - The events of the show span the period of over 50 years, basically covering 3 generations of a family, which naturally comes with a very large cast of characters. This is very ambitious, to put it nicely. It makes keeping track of all the characters very difficult. Even worse, this results in the characters lacking ...well... character. Trying to cram in 3 generations and 50 years worth of story into a 16 episode show results in a distinct lack of character establishing and building moments. When it comes to the main characters, while some of them seem like they could be OK if given more time to develop (like Yang Gwan Sik and Yang Eun Myeong), what little bits we were shown of the main main characters (O Ae Sun and Yang Geum Myeong) did not make them seem likeable at all, and did not make me, as a viewer, root for their success.
3) The story - Due to the problems mentioned in points 1 and 2, the viewing experience of the story was somehow both confusing and boring at the same time. Additionally, it lacked direction. Where is it going, what are the writers trying to tell us with this? I could rationalize it (if I was inclined due to actually liking the characters) as being an artistic choice to invoke a “realistic” feeling (as in, the show is structured as if someone in their old age were just recalling events from their life, as one would whilst going through a photo album), but it doesn’t make for an actually good story. Good stories are told with a purpose and have both a natural flow and solid structure to them. This felt more like just recounting of events without any emotional weight, which is better saved for history books.
In conclusion, I did not enjoy this show. The people who made this were like Icarus - arrogantly trying too hard to make something too sophisticated for them to actually successfully pull off with their skill level. In the end they just burned and crashed instead.
