Gripping hidden identity drama where you won't skip a second!

This is the first review I am writing. Because this series is worth it.
I highly recommend you watch it! I did not skip a second and usually Chinese period dramas with 40 episodes are just too much for me.

This drama is visually beautiful, has a great story that makes sense the whole time, great characters with depth, developments and unforseen behavior that will make you glued to the TV!

The main leads do both a fantastic job portraying their characters and you can feel their chemistry! Their romance is quite slowburn but it's relieving to see a main couple without any misunderstandings for a change.

This is not your typical c drama, although there are a lot of misunderstandings and mistreatments of the female lead, you will never feel helpless and hopeless because the FL fights for herself and collects supporters and friends along her way who will always help her and support her.

The villains in this drama were the BEST. I really hated them, was afraid of them and in the end pitied them, their acting was phenomenal. And they had a huge character development, the main couple did great, as everyone did, but the villains carried the whole show for me!

Watch it if you like happy endings, a strong but beautiful female lead, a smart but a little cold handsome male lead, hidden identities done right and great great acting!

10 out of 10 for me!

Easy on the eyes

March 2025
Another C-drama that gripped me, but I did feel it dragged on at times, and could have been shorter, without the story suffering.

Wu Jin Yan was very good in the FL role of a woman betrayed, who takes on a new identity to seek revenge through justice. This actress is excellent in portraying strong female characters, rather than the childish and saccharine ones. I thought she was excellent in 'Kill Me Love Me', too.

Loved the ML, Wang Xing Yue. He had great presence and portrayed the brilliant, but cold and seemingly ruthless, Xiao Heng, perfectly.

There's actually an 11-year age gap between them (she is older), but I'd never have guessed it. Sometimes when the difference is that way around, their chemistry can be a bit strained or unnatural (K-drama 'Knight Flower' springs to mind, even though I loved it), but not in this.

The plot is straight forward, but the story twists and turns. It is a ruthless tale, with some vile characters, and some tragic moments, but has enough light humour and slower paced moments to balance that. There's some great banter between Jiang-lee/Fang-fei and Heng, too. It's an intelligent script overall.

The backstory of the most horrible character (and cause of Fang-fei's suffering), should have prompted sympathy for them, but they were too horrible for me to accept any of their behaviour. Just awful, and I was cross about the outcome for them, which I wanted to be worst!

There are the usual jealousies between siblings, family ('Clan') rivalry, with Royal shenanigans thrown in. It's a decent watch though, and didn't feel 'done before'.

I had favourites, liked the mix, and it made a change to have women that could outsmart men, and men who were as cunning and ambitious for status, as the women usually are.

I'll be hunting out more from both leads.

Definitely the dark horse of cdrama for this year

People have already reviewed and said everything there needs to be said so I will just outline what I liked or didn't like:

Liked:
1. The acting; The acting of the main leads especially wu jinyan was so stellar that in some parts I would forget that I am watching her act. She made sure that we would remember xue fangfei/jiang li. Her beauty and her expressiveness literally shined through the screen. The way she could deliver a thousand emotions through her eyes in a second was so good. Same goes for wang xingyue as duke su. Although he did not have much screen presence, he still managed to DELIVER. The moves that would have looked ridiculous and cringy with another actor, he made it work. Both of their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS even when they are just looking at each other which was 90% responsible for this drama being a success. Shout out also to Shen Yurong and Princess wanning's actors because my goodness, they dominated almost every scene they were in. The way shen yurong's actor made me feel pity for the character yet making sure that we know how evil he is, was done so artfully I had to be impressed. Also ji shuran's actor, she played the tropey stepmother role but still managed to shine though even when wu jinyan was delivering a spectacular scene.
2. The plot, characters, and pacing: Cdramas are getting good at pacing and its nice to see this being reflected in The Double. The plot had significant amount of twists and turns to keep the viewers engaged till the end. The diverse range of characters gave this drama life as well as the character developments. Not everyone received justice or happy endings but you understand the motivations and aspirations behind their actions, even the villains. The double is one of the few cdramas where morally grey characters were portrayed brilliantly. I also liked the subtle emphasis on how systematic misogyny, the effects of bad parenting especially by the fathers towards the daughters, the implications of sexual violence even towards the main character and how the producers did not shy away from it.
3. The OST: Chenle's "Live on love on" was solid art. The opening theme was beautiful as well.
4. The cinematography was better compared to other youku production.

Disliked:
1. Although the plot is pretty solid some times you have to suspend logic to appreciate the drama in my opinion. The slapstick comedy at inappropriate times did not help. Them using wugong for not other reason than being flashy was seriously weird.
2. The leads had excellent chemistry and the romance progression felt natural but did not at the same time which is understandable given romance is not the focus of the drama but I wished there would have been more substance. Like in LLTG although there was an overarching plot the romance was also prioritized as the ml and fl gets entangled early on and it feels more developed. But with this, other than the chemistry and the subtle understanding by the audience that the leads are falling in love, there is not much to go on. It feels like the romance has taken a back seat.
3. The ending felt weird and unnecessary. I know they did that for the dramatics as this is a very soap opera-ish drama but the ending was literally not needed. They could have ended with XH and XF married, a time lapse for 1 year, then cut to them visiting tong'er and jiang li's tomb with a voice over and that would have been enough. That battle scene should have been shown early on which would have increased the angst. The slow burn would have worked out better in that way just like how it did in LLTG. But a scene at the end just goes to show they just wanted to create some hype and nothing else.

It's quite an enjoyable drama and probably the best one in this year judging by the cdrama drought.

POETIC JUSTICE ,DELIVERED BY A RESILIENT HEROINE

If not that we are in the world of fantasy, i would have made you yhe keepers of justice! Ley me just give all the cast a Kudos you truely deserve, all the cast here they truely did amezing job the acting is high level and they convincingly portrayed their characters as perfect can go.
I know that (after reading comments) some are complaining about the age gap ,to my surprise i didn't even notice that detail til i read comments , the FL actress is a good choice given how her character is written, kind of puzzled why is that a problem if her co
-star is younger? (Maybe it has a significance in Chinese culture)
And i also notice that the complaint about chemistry between the leads ,some saying it was not enough, i truely believe that it was well played on that part, given that the character of Xue Fang /Jiang Li is written, she come from : betrayal, from someone she loved deeply and she lost her dignity (the rape case) i think for her to carefully and slowly romantically approach to Duke Su is right.
For those who are complexed by The ex husband Shen You Long i couldn't find a way of feeling anything either for hom,i understand those who can feel sympathy maybe because of circumstance wich brought him to become who he become, but putting the whole blame of that psycho princess will not be right, the man chose to kill his wife,he become unhappy because of his choice he is solely to blame and Im glad they both ended up like that. The poetic justice in all this is that He lost all the happiness the minute he killed the person who loved him the most, and he killed the princess, to avenge the person he become desperately obsessed with after killing her. The princess ordered him to kill to obtain the love from him ,the love she never got no matter what she coul do or give him.
The tragic scene of Shen You Long ,carrying Xue and the princess downthe stairs looking at them is the poetic tragedy, and a grimm tale ,that nothing can buy love.
This is my take on this amezing series, the writers you did well , this willstat with me.

A slow burn for the ages

I was so struck by how much this drama moved me and I'm still shocked by the hold this OTP has on me. Narratively, there was a lot I was bored by but I won't let that discredit where credit is due. I found myself not really caring for the plots and machinations surrounding the leads and that may be me but I was not a fan of the execution of the storyline. I wasn't a fan of the direction either and overall the production values were leaning towards more of artistry than substance. I might be in the minority but I will stand by these opinions. At the end of the day, all I care about and will continue to cherish solely is A Li and Xiao Heng's relationship above all else. There are only a handful of pairings out there that really work their way into my heart and they are It for me. It's so vital to me that Xiao Heng emphasizes the importance of Ah Li being herself and the inherent trust they have in one another that gets them through the next obstacle and the next. To me they epitomize what is lovely between a bond that will respect one another's boundary and be there as the shoulder of support when needed, during the good times and bad. Couples can easily forget the promises they make to one another but not this pairing. If this OTP has no die-hard shippers then that means I'm dead.

Revenge Story of Shivers and Tears

Shen Yurong, your wife made you. Now, she'll destroy you, and we'll love every single second of it.

With breathtaking visuals and a tingle-inducing soundtrack, the Double leads you through a mesmerizing chess match where the pawn could very well be the player. Betrayal from someone who you love and trust has never felt more agonizing and cowardly, but through chance encounters and many ordeals we find justice and realize what true love actually looks like. This invigorating slow burn with long looks and stimulating conversation will not leave you feeling cold.

Every plot twist and iconic one-liner is carefully crafted to make an army of shivers crawl up your spine. The acting is so good that you will suddenly find yourself completely in tune with all the on-screen emotions and empathizing with some unexpected characters. Prepare to cry a river and shout in outrage. That's what I did - multiple times.

Keeps attention

I usually watch only SFdrama, wuxia. But this at he'd my eye. Story, sometimes too slow, keept my attention. Stories plot and twist was bit surprising. Chemistry between those two leading acters is very compelling.
I can recommend this interesting life drama to anyone who likes to relax near TV.

Her revenge was great!

I really addicted to this drama, i got so emotional when i watched it. Everything is wonderful, the costumes, the actors, the musics are so soft that it touch my deepest heart. The way she take her revenge makes me feels so satisfied, with the help from her lover (the Duke). One of the best drama i've ever watched. Love it! ❤️

When you have nothing left, no love nor hate, you've achieved your revenge.

I really enjoyed a lot of things in this drama, but I have to be honest about a few points first:

1- It felt like: 'The story of Yanxi Palace' + 'Love Like the Galaxy' = 'The Double.' Those are two of my favorite dramas, so of course this one was to my liking too, but it didn't reach the level of either of them.
2- The last episode could have been one of the best finales I ever watched in Cdrama, but they had to ruin it with unnecessary events.
3- The director just looooooves using the wind to blow people's clothes and hair, even in the last scene. (It was okay at the beginning but in was too much for me after).
Apart from that, I enjoyed every scheme, even though we know the FL will find her way out every time (well, she is the FL). I liked the chemistry between the leads despite the age gap. I found the FL's acting was on point, especially in the emotional scenes. The ML is eye candy, but his role was kind of easy, so we didn't see much of his acting range, as he didn't have to change expression most of the time.
The OST was so great and emotional; I cried because of how well they used the OST, even more than the actual scenes. The princess and FL's ex-husband were so great, especially toward the end. Their wonderful performances gave us complex feelings toward them (thanks to the writing too).
The last episode had a very emotional scene between the FL and Jiang Li's father that I really appreciated.

I definitely recommend this drama for people who don't focus too much on the plot flow, in's really enjoyable, and I give it a final 8/10 rating.

Really good until the last part

I really like the drama in general. The story was interesting (occasionally not logical but still interesting), acting was great and I liked how the story goes until the last episode's last part. When they conclude the most important battle with no one dying at the last 5 minute war they suddenly decide to kill 2 characters and left the ending without any explaination. This part made me angry but it was still overall a great drama.

Engaging revenge drama!!!

The double is indeed an engaging, exciting and thrilling revenge drama. It made glued to it right from the first episode itself.
The female protagonist sets off on a revengeful journey against her husband and mother in law and sister in law after she is wrongfully accused and killed by them.
I really liked the way the female lead,Jiang Li/Xue Fangfei was very strong throughout the drama and was always focused on her goal.Wu Jinyan was really very good in portraying her role. She carried the different emotions, agony, pain, angst, hatred in her role perfectly.
The male lead, Duke Su/Xiao Heng is the outstanding character in this drama.Wang Xingyue portrayal of this character is excellent!!The way he stands as a moral support for Jiang Li,how he is always there for her in difficult times and the way he expresses his love only through eyes is fabulous.
I also liked the friendship between the emperor and Duke Su.He is one such emperor who really suits his title of emperor.
Jiang Li's stepmother,,her sisters, the eldest princess,Shen yurong and his family were truly disgusting.but all the actors have done their job well.
The story was fast paced with right emotional quotient.
I liked the song sung by Cyndi Wang.
Overall a worth watching drama.
Watch it to witness a second chance given to a woman who has been betrayed in her life to fight for her justice.👍

From the Grave to Peaceful Life

Can't believe I skipped this in 2024. After seeing that one scene Xiao Heng keeping A'Li's keepsake in his mouth and I was hooked. Binged it in just a few days.

The story takes us from pitiful, wronged Xue Fang Fei to her becoming this vengeful ghost who gets not only her revenge but also her savior's who she uses her name. And Shen Yu Rong? One of the most despicable characters I’ve ever seen. Sure, the princess is evil, but she’s just an unhinged noble with too much power. Shen Yu Rong, though? A whole different breed. He needs to be studied under “Men Who Think They’re the Biggest Victims but Have Zero Balls.”

And then we have Xiao Heng. Our little Duke Su is built different. He’s got the guts, the presence, the unwavering loyalty, more characters like him in the future, please! It’s wild that the two MCs have nearly 12 years between them because he never once felt younger than me. He owned that role, cold but burning underneath.

Also, Li Meng’s acting? Insane. The way her eyes looked lifeless yet carried so much weight? Completely haunting.
