Highs and Lows
I love this drama so much. It is going on my rewatch list immediately. Now, that that's out of the way, let's get into the review.I titled my review "Highs and Lows" because that is exactly what my emotions were when I watched this. I was constantly at the edge of my seat, tweeting about plot points or how I thought certain characters would react. I cried a lot, laughed a lot and even made some new friends while watching this drama. It has been such a fun and enjoyable experience to get to learn more about each character in the story, why they act the way they do, the relationships that they have, and the growth that they experience as the story goes on. This story is more than just a revenge drama, it is a story about finding one's self and overcoming.
Now that I have gotten some of the highlights out of the way, let's discuss some potential lowlights. Some of the plot points are a bit... far-fetched. But if you come into this drama with an open mind and intend to enjoy yourself, then it becomes bearable/you will be able to look past it. Additionally, some of the shots chosen in certain scenes could have been done differently.
All in all, I give this drama a 9.5/10 due to how much fun I had and the chemistry between each of the characters.

Revenge at its finest
Great story, great chemistry between the leads. It was very well written with each subplot wrapping up well. The intricacies of the various revenge plots were very satisfying. The villains were not to be messed with and made me hate them. But the layers of each story also gave the villains a humane side. The characters were well developed.
I like how it didn't overly dwell on Jiang Li/Xue Fengfei's identity switch. It would have been like beating a dead horse.
Going back to the ML, Wang Xing Yue was fantastic. I'd seen him in a supporting role in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love and was really excited to see him in the lead role, and he did not disappoint. He played the role so well, and the chemistry with Wu Jin Yan was palpable.
SPOILER - I do wish the ending could have been happier. Wasn't ready for the unnecessary deaths at the end. Would have been great to stop after the wedding night. Only reason I can't give it a 10.
The music for this site is also great. The song for Xiao Heng and Jiang Li is lovely!

Interpreted and Adapted from the Novel, perfectly.
I was apprehensive when I learned that there will be a series of this novel, as I enjoyed reading it. I wasn't a fan of the ML actor, and was thinking of not watching this drama. But, I read a lot of positive feedback from this drama, so when it finished airing, I immediately gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did!It was perfectly done for me. I love that they did a good job and enhanced the story from the novel. Characters were portrayed well by the actors. ML and FL has good chemistry, and felt all the needed emotions in each scenes.
Villains, were too convincing. You wanted to personally skin them alive. I wish the extra episode, could've been an hour long. Hehe.
Over all, it is worthy of the hype. I enjoyed watching each episodes.

After all that, why the disappointing end?
The Double has all the elements I love: revenge plot, witty scheming, martial arts, good chemistry between leads. The entire story is played out like an elaborate and strategic chess game. The two leads were wonderfully cast. The FL has such a memorable face and perfectly portrays the determination of her character. The ML is strong and exudes playfulness and confidence beyond what I'd expect for such a young actor.
My biggest complaint is the ending. It was so unnecessary that 15 mins before the show ends, the ML loses both his sidekicks in a war? What's the point when the show ends in 10 mins....!?
Yes, I watched the special episode ending but it just felt like they slapped a band-aid on to say "he's alive!" Not everyone will see the special though and the greater audience will be left hanging. Not cool!

Strong female, thrilling story and nice romance
__*The Double*__ - 9/10 Historical C-DramaLet's begin with the aspects of this drama that I found less impressive.
For the identity swap to be plausible, the drama assumes an implausible level of blindness in both the audience and the characters. It's reminiscent of the scene in The Simpsons: "Homer? Who is Homer? My name is Guy Incognito." The female lead merely assumes a new name without altering her appearance and reappears just weeks after her supposed disappearance, without any attempt to disguise herself.
Now, onto the commendable parts.
Everything else shines. The actors, many of whom were unfamiliar to me, delivered stellar performances. The female lead was particularly well-written—a strong character without falling into the trope of a Mary Sue.
The story was well-crafted and suspenseful. It was so engaging that I found myself binge-watching all 40 episodes, eager to uncover each new twist and turn.
The romance? The chemistry was palpable. While it wasn’t the best I've ever seen, it was certainly compelling.
__*Plot*__
The female lead is a married woman whose husband, a court official, along with his family, tarnishes her reputation and buries her in the mountains. Remarkably, she survives and is rescued by a noble young lady who had also been grievously wronged. Unfortunately, the cost of this rescue is the young lady's own life. The female lead then assumes the identity of her savior, vowing to avenge both herself and the noble young lady.

The best revenge/romance drama I've ever seen!
This is a story of a woman who was terribly wronged seeking to avenge the injustice perpetrated on her, her family, and woman's whose identity she assumed. I was rooting for her all the way. She would sacrifice anything to exact her revenge, and she couldn't ask for a better partner than the ML. Wu Jin Yan and Wang Xing Yue's chemistry was fantastic. I couldn't ask for two better actors in the roles. Was this review helpful to you?

Revenge Served with Style
I started The Double quite casually, without any expectations — but from the very first episode, I was hooked. The opening gave me goosebumps! The story of Xue Fang Fei (XFF), who rises from death after being betrayed and killed by her husband, sets up a powerful and thrilling start. It immediately made me wonder what would happen next. The plot revolves around XFF’s revenge against her treacherous husband, and every episode unfolds her plan step by step in such a satisfying way. The identity swap between the real and fake Xue Fang Fei is written cleverly — logical and believable, especially since the drama avoids the “rebirth” trope that’s often restricted in recent productions.
What I love most is how Duke Xiao, the male lead, supports XFF. His protectiveness feels genuine yet respectful — he trusts her strength, doesn’t interfere with her revenge, and always lends a hand when she needs it. Their relationship feels mature, balanced, and empowering. You can truly feel that XFF can face anything, especially knowing that Duke Xiao has her back.
There was, however, one scene that felt a bit over the top — when XFF played the qin in the middle hall, and the CGI effects suddenly went wild. It felt unnecessary for a historical drama (more fitting for a fantasy one). And while I loved almost everything about this series, the ending left me a bit disappointed. It ended on a cliffhanger, and I couldn’t help but wish for a more episodes.
A special mention goes to Princess Wanning, one of the most complex characters in the show. Despite her tragic past and misfortune, her obsession with Shen Yu Rong (XFF’s ex-husband) leads her down a dark path. While I understood where her pain came from, it still didn’t justify the harm she caused others. Actress Li Meng portrayed her with such depth — you could feel her sorrow, anger, and desperation all at once. Truly an impressive performance!
Overall, The Double is a stunning production. The costumes, set design, lighting, and cinematography are absolutely top-notch, giving the drama a refined and elegant aesthetic. The chemistry between the leads is well-executed, and the age gap between them never feels awkward.
Despite its slightly rushed ending, this drama truly lives up to its reputation — a beautifully crafted revenge story filled with passion, grace, and unforgettable performances.

A Perfect Blend of Mystery, Romance and Strong Performances.
It’s one of those dramas that keeps you glued to the screen with its mix of suspense, romance, and deep emotions. From the very beginning, the story grabbed my attention with its unexpected twists and interesting plot developments. Unlike some dramas where the story feels slow or predictable, this one managed to stay exciting and fresh throughout. What made it even better was how it didn’t just focus on the plot but took the time to explore the characters’ feelings, struggles, and growth.
So I was always engaged and cared about what happened next.
One of the biggest highlights for me was Wang Xing Yue as the male lead.
Considering his young age, I was genuinely impressed by how well he handled such a complicated and emotional role.
He showed so much maturity and skill in his acting, making his character feel real and layered.
Whether it was moments of vulnerability, anger, confusion or determination, Wang Xing Yue delivered his emotions with subtlety and honesty.
The female lead was also excellent, bringing strength and sensitivity to her character. Together, their chemistry was natural and powerful which made their relationship believable and moving. The supporting cast did a great job too, adding more dimension and richness to the story.
The production quality was another thing that impressed me, from the beautiful cinematography to the well-chosen soundtrack, everything worked together to create the right mood and atmosphere.
The suspenseful scenes were tense and well-executed, while the romantic moments felt heartfelt and genuine.
Overall, “The Double” is a drama I would highly recommend to anyone who loves a good mix of romance, mystery and strong performances. It’s rare to find a show that balances all these elements so well and the young cast’s talent makes it even more special. If you enjoy stories that keep you guessing while also tugging at your heartstrings, this drama is definitely worth watching.

the 2ML actor kills in this role
Very good suspense, revenge drama. The FL was outstanding. I don't have time to go over every point, but you felt every single thing she felt. She cried, raged, loved, hated. Beautiful job. The FL and ML do not have a lot of chemistry between them, which is fine, maybe that really isn't the point. There's a lot of other things going on. ML character is pretty stiff. Again, maybe that's the writing. But the chemistry between FL and 2ML is on fire -- love, passion, hate, revenge. I'm a fan of the 2ml actor. In this role he exuded every emotion and flaw: love, passion, remorse, self loathing, evil. You never know where he is or if he's lying. At one point, because I clearly have deep-seated emotional issues and probably Stockholm syndrome, I kind of wanted 2ML to be able to repent and get forgiven by FL. Sadly, SPOILER ALERT***

Here it is below:
after you drug your wife, throw her in a pit, smash her face with a shovel and bury her alive, there's probably no coming back from that.

i finished watching this in under 4 days i was so captivated by it.i had just finished watching blossom when i had reluctantly started this cuz 1. i wanted to forget i will never see the blossom leads together again(maybe) and 2. im just like that i try to distract msyelf instantly when i finish a drama.
at first as i had just finished blossom and the styles of both the drama are very dissimilar i kept comparing the two. i was even finding faults till ep 11. however, the pace started fastening after that and god knows ive been in misery ever since. this was such a perfect drama im just flabbergasted rn. i hate the last ep with all my guts. the only reason this is getting 9 points is cuz that ending deserved to be a dragged at least another episode. ik romance was not even a subplot in this drama still we were served but it was just utterly brutal that they would cut uf off just like that. also there was no fucking reason to kill off xiao heng's lackeys bro (i will never recover from that) like they were such good side characters. when i was watching the extra episode i kept thinking ah wen ji would make a joke here and get beaten up like the writers made me get attached to them for 40 episodes and then killed them off abruptly like morning tea aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
now on to the characters. i fucking loved jiang li/xue fangfei so fucking much. her plot was so solid she was unbeatable. i admire her sm for her independent self like mam had it all under the palm of her hand, tho it was a bit annoying how she kept going to xiao heng every time she fucked up which was 80% times. however we forgive her for her braveries. she really had the big brains and her acting is just immaculate.
next up xiao heng (kept the best for the last) this was my first xingyue drama and he has me under his palms. before this i knew of his existence ofc but i never thought id be watching his dramas anytime soon. normally i watch dramas if my favorite/known actors are there but this time i heard the double would be the best choice to watch after blossom and i followed suite and fuck that was ethereal. i loved every moment of the drama it was so good.
now dont get me started on their relationship. this drama literally looked like they did not even plan on having romance as even a subplot but then decided against it just to cater to viewers' needs and wants and the leads cooperated so well on that. my bsf knows the amount of times ive screamed pls get me a bf because of this man.
normally after every drama i go like i want more but this time im truly satisfied. the plot is stong, the ending couldve been better but for a revenge drama that was fucking good. i hope to see more like these so bad

Retribution 101
The Double could easily be a daily soap. Thankfully it is not and it is much more entertaining. The Double dabbles in all the virtues and vices - self sacrifice, revenge, karma, selfishness, psychotic obsession, manipulation, kindness, cruelty, hyposcricy, cowardice and bravery. You name it, you got it.The story is engaging. At the very center of it is Jiang Li a.k.a Xue Fangfei, a virtuous, loyal, beautiful young wife of a newly appointed scholar, who unfortunately catches the psycho princess’s eye. Under her pressure and his own cowardice, he not only loses himself but has to kill his wife. Xue Fangfei manages to survive because of brave kindness of a total stranger Jiang Li. Just for the crime of helping her, Li loses her life. Li, whose life is a series of tragedies and betrayals, makes Fangfei promise that she would help clear Li’s name from utterly false and criminally cruel allegations made by her step mother. And that’s where the drama begins. There after it’s a series of incidents that eventually not only restores Jiang Li’s good name but even punishes literally everybody responsible for ruining it in the first place. Along the way, Fangfei takes her revenge by destroying the would-be killers. And as a bonus, she gets her happily ever after with a handsome, enigmatic Duke who never gives up on her. At one point, he is the only decent man in her life. He sticks with her and she with him. Together they manage to save the kingdom as well.
This is the story. It’s melodramatic in the sense the villains schemes seemed OTT at some points. But at no point, Li seemed hopeless or lost in her counter-schemes. That shows that at no point the story had any confusion about the direction it wanted to go in. There are a couple of unnecessary tracks, which if edited out could have made the story even more tight.
The screenplay is not 100% in sync with the story. Maybe it was due to some weird decisions to edit out stuff. For example, I still don’t know why the Duke stared at Xue Fangfei at the very beginning. It’s shown as a kinda flashback. But I don’t understand the reason behind it. It also does not clearly tell why Shen Yurong tangled with the princess in the first place. Sure, she noticed him, but I am sure he could have avoided many if not all of those encounters. He was said to be a virtuous man who did not take bribes. So why did he let the princess get to the point of obsession? These small details actually are important which throw light on the characters and their motives. At least for me, these details decide whether I sympathize with a villain or not. Because this motive is never shown, I could not sympathize with the princess or Shen Yurong. Sure, Shang Yurong was kind of a tortured character but all I saw was, his selfishness and borderline narcissism which creates the whole mess. Princess, although has a backstory and battles with some serious PTSD, did not make me feel sorry for her. There was not a single act of kindness from that woman. For me, she was truly irredeemable.
And that brings me to the characterization. Since it’s based on a novel, characters are all predefined. The drama does not have a lot of leeway. It can only deviate so much from the main source. They can only pick and choose which characters to keep. This drama does a solid in that section. 99% of the characters aren’t superfluous. They serve a purpose and carry the story forward.
Which automatically leads to the actors. All the actors have done pretty decent job in the drama. Wu Jinyan excelled in the scenes when she returns to the capital under the guise of Jiang Li and inadvertently crosses path with her would-be murderers. You can feel her rage, hurt and pain in these scenes. At the same time, her pretend contriteness when she first returns home is not over done. Well balanced acting.
Wang xingyue played an enigmatic and borderline cruel Duke Su. I enjoyed anytime WXY was on the screen. But I gotta be honest, at times he appeared wooden and awkward in some scenes, especially in the close up scenes where he had to smile or soften towards Li. Duke Su’s cold and calculating demeanour was perfectly captured by WXY, but in the romantic scenes it was a hit or a miss for me. Some of their flirting was done so naturally that it gave me a melty feeling but some was so wooden, that I was frowning at my screen. At the risk of getting tarred and feathered, I will say that there was no natural chemistry. Any chemistry that I saw and liked was mostly a product of story, careful editing, and my natural desire for our leads getting together. One thing though, not at any juncture, the story tried to become a romance. It had romance but that happened in the background. At no point, it overpowered the essence of the story.
It is around 40% about leads, the rest is villains. There were so many. That’s why it felt like a daily soap. They just kept coming. Sure, our leads managed to overcome them every single time. But I also felt somewhat exhausted with their scheming and general villainy. On that note, I do not agree with anybody who says the princess or the step mother are grey characters. Nope, they are not. They had backstories, yes. But at no point, they showed any mercy towards their victims. At no point, they behaved like good people and in the in the very next, would happily slit throats. Nah, they were just cruel and evil. The only grey character was Shen Yurong. He was so delusional that he wanted to get back with his wife he tried to killed. He kept helping her through out. But all of that was not counter balanced by his initial atrocity. He, for me, is a grey character.
I have one gripe though. The deaths of duke’s lackeys was so so so unnecessary that my jaw dropped when they happened. They happened in the last 10 minutes of the show. Why?why would you kill perfectly healthy, skilled warriors - not one but both? What were they even thinking? SMH. IMO, that whole battle was senseless and way unnecessary. Those last 15 minutes could have given us a good epilogue where Li slowly humanized the Duke. In stead they gave a 5 minutes extra episode which felt very choppy due to its disconnect from the last episode.
Anyhoo. The positives are lot more than the shortcomings IMO. If you have any doubt about watching it, watch it solely for Duke Su’s fans and WXY’s martial practices. It will get yiu your money’s worth.
Overall, I’d put in the solid green in my entertainment ledger.
