The Story Beautifully Writen

The story had nice flow, between ravenge and love story, there also some comedy slip in between.

Xue Fang Fei / Jiang Li - Wu Jin Yan
She took ravenge to whom wronge her. She took her own path, at first she act like nothing to lose cause she tought everything that she care for already gone but when she found out that her father still alive, she show some vulnerability. She start to fall in love with Xiao Heng and found path of ravenge with him.

Duke Su / Xiao Heng - Wang Xing Yue
He is the type of ML character, cold, smart, had power, and handsome. He is person work at shadow, stay on his own principal.

As novel reader :
The drama change some story and blending character such as Prince Cheng with Yin Zhan.
The reason for Duke Su father die because of Yin Zhan. Duke Su mother found out affair between Empress Dowager and Yin Zhan, which they had child named Yin Zhi Li. Duke Su mother eventually die and because of this, her husband trying to find the reason and led to his death.

I actually miss some character that not been potrayed in the drama, like Wen Ren Yao. He is Duke Su friend and had ability to read future, the person that Wen Ren Yao can only read is Duke Su. He saw that Duke Su only had fate with one woman and if this fate failed, he either become monk or devil.

Situ Jiuye in novel is only Duke Su friend and not falling in love with him. She is princess from Molan, she only visited Duke Su house cause Duke Su house had a lot rare plant. She eventually falling in love with Xue Zhao and he follow her to Molan, only came back when Jiang Li giving birth to her daughter, Ji Meng.

Duke Su grandfather
He's relationship with Duke Su actually pretty nice in novel, they lived in the same house, there is some area that free of plant, that area is the place of Duke Su grandfather trained cause if there is some plant around is gonna get cut by his sword. He die when killing Yin Zhan.

Yin Zhi Li
Yin Zhan and Empress Dowager child. Yin Zhan killed his son so he can replace him with Yin Zhi Li. Yin Zhi Li parents plan on treason so he can sit on the throne. He fall in love with Jiang Li, even plan to propose.

A thrilling revenge story with top tier cinematography and an exquisite slow burn romance

(Review contains ending spoiler)

A spectacular show that hooks its viewer in from the first to the last scene. Packed with multiple plotlines and characters, yet every arc is distinctive, and every character is memorable in their own way. It’s hard to really pinpoint my favorite thing about this show because everything just stands out and leaves me thinking about it long after I finish the show. But if I have to pick what draws me to this show and what the show excels at the most, it is the thrilling action-packed plot, commendable characters, strong acting and absolutely stunning cinematography.

The first thing I notice about this show is the cinematography for sure. Every random still from the show can be used for wallpaper, THAT is how gorgeous this show is! Director certainly knows how to capture the essence of these beautiful sets and characters. I love how the gothic, eerie vibe is set from the first scene in. You know you’re in for a dramatic story. As the show progresses, I fall in love more and more with the approach to an almost theatre-esque directing style, with close up shots of characters dialogues and surprisingly instead of making it cringe, I find it very entertaining.

The characters have very distinctive introductions, and each storyline feels full on its own. For shows with so many characters, it can be hard to get viewers to care about or even remember the more minor characters. But with The Double, I feel like every minor character’s storyline is closely intertwined with the main plot in a way that feels like they are more than a role or a plot device, but their own character.

The leads are super interesting characters on their own, but it is their relationship to each other that fascinates me. Xue Fangfei/ Jiang Li and Xiao Heng are both strong, independent and charismatic leads who are well written and easy to root for, but their foils, or should I say, their “Double”(s), the main villains Princess Wanning and Shen Yurong, are equally interesting and well written characters. These 4 characters each hold their own in terms of personality, character development and plot importance.

Xue Fangfei has become one of my favorite female leads I’ve watched lately and she is undoubtedly the center of this revenge story that is The Double. Meanwhile, the other 3 characters make up the triangle that surrounds her tragic fate and her road to seek revenge and justice. I like how she started out as a total tragic figure, losing everything and “died”, but by the end she survived all her enemies and prevailed. It might be cliché trope nowadays, but a good revenge story will always put a smile on my face! I also like that she is not invincible, that she makes mistakes, that she’s not even totally “good” but also never evil, that she uses people but also gives her opponents their deserved karma.

Xiao Heng is one of my fav male leads as well. His story, his relationship to XFF, to the royal family especially the Emperor and Wanning, to his father and grandfather, to his men, are all memorable and interesting. I like how he’s kind of morally grey but romantically a total green flag (that is lowkey everyone’s favorite kind of male lead isn’t it HAHA). I also like how even though it’s Xue Fangfei’s story, he is his own distinguished character and not to dependent on XFF’s plot to uplift the writing of his own plot. His connections to the corruption schemes, the peace of the country, his political schemes and agendas with the emperor, all are intriguing plots that tie altogether with the main plots.

Some people say this show doesn’t have a lot of romance because it’s a revenge story, and to that I disagree strongly. Not only is romance one of the main plots driving the show forward, it is also one of the main themes of this story. The thing about The Double is it’s a slow burn done right, and for that I am more obsessed Xue Li and Xiao Heng’s love story. Their relationship is one built on understanding, partnership, equality and trust, which I think are the best foundations of a good love story, and also make for a great foil against
1/ Xue Fangfei’s relationship with Shen Yurong and
2/ Shen Yurong and Wanning’s relationship.
Together with SYR and WN, these 4 make a relationship square that fascinates me greatly. Even in modern standards, their love-hate relationships would make for great drama, let alone back in historical times where things such as dignity, political power struggles are involved.

Shen Yurong is such an interesting villain. He manages to make me despise him so much and yet I can still see where he comes from. He’s evil in a pathetic way, but not dumb. His character is nuanced and tormented in a way that, instead of wanting him to die early, he makes you wanna see him live to see what other evil schemes he would come up with and how much more manipulating his gaslighting can get, as well as to see how his satisfying (or not) his end was gonna be. Personally, I dislike how the show ended him, because I wanted to see him truly suffer. But I guess in a weird way, his death makes for a more thematic ending, relating to the themes of guilt, love and hate. The poetic irony of him being a character so afraid of death, willing to kill his own wife whom he loves to escape dying, and ends up killing himself for said wife? I think it’s beautiful. Do I find it satisfying? Not totally. But it’s beautiful. =))

In the same reasoning, I think Wanning’s death is a beautiful and tragic poetic irony as well. Her tragic past and subsequent descent to madness makes her story a perfect foil to Xue Fangfei’s. Both are victims of sexual crimes, both are deemed as “ruined”, both loved the same man, both suffered under said man. Where XFF found strength to seek her justice, Wanning lost all her strength and succumbed to the darkness, becoming a total villain. I thought she deserved a worse ending then getting to choose how she died, but the way her story is told, I think having SYR be her ender is a great irony.

As for the technical aspects, I LOVEEE the acting in this show. Everyone brought their A-game. I was mesmerized with every performance, from the leads to the villains to the minor characters. Shout out to Wu Jinyan, Wang Xingyue, Liang Yongqi and Li Meng who play our main leads and villains. This is my first time watching all of them, except Wang Xingyue whom I knew as Zhang Zhe from Story of Kunning Palace, and I must say they all impress me. Wu Jinyan has such raw and emotional eyes that just makes every crying and sad scene so much more emotional TT. She really nailed that soft and vulnerable look when she was betrayed and then the tough and cunning look of a person on a revenge path. Knowing that she was a ballet dancer before impresses me more because she makes Xue Fangfei so ethereal with her elegant movements! Li Meng was such a maniac as Princess Wanning, and it was such a captivating performance. Every time she says “Kneel” I get chills TT. She made Wanning so alive and scary and yet pitiful at the same time. And the more I hate Shen Yurong, the more I’m impressed by Liang Yongqi. This character has dead eyes for the majority of the first act and yet you’re able to see his guilt and greed and madness in the second act so well and not feel like 2 separate characters. And lastly, Wang Xingyue is fast rising to my top fav actors. Duke Su can be charming and soft, but he can also be tough and cunning. You can see the transition from his suspicious era where he was using Xue Fangfei and trying to get her to admit her identity, and his partner era where he and XFF finally became a team and him falling in love with her. Also seeing his role in Kunning Palace and then in The Double impresses me even more, because he pulls off two very different characters and it’s so satisfying to watch!

The chemistry between the leads Wu Jinyan and Wang Xingyue are really something else. I see many people are put off by the actors’ age gap and being agist towards WJY, but honestly you can barely see that gap on screen at all. They have effortless chemistry, and they make the slow burn so delicious! This couple barely has kisses, but they have a good amount of skin ship that makes your heart flutter! The tension and build up was so great that’s why when they finally get together you feel earned!10/10 writing and acting for me!

Lastly, I want to take a moment to appreciate the music in this show. Every song is a 10/10. I’m a sucker for ballads, especially sad ballads and this show really nailed it. My fav is Withered by Huang Shifu, but all the songs are so good, and the lyrics just match the story so well!!

Overall, this drama was such a feast for the eyes. Not a moment of boredom for me. A captivating story with characters that leave you thinking for days. I might be watching new shows but I just know The Double is that one drama that will be on my mind for months and I will be randomly referencing it whenever I watch anything else!!

A series that really shows the psychological side of humans .

The series opens with a dark story, immediately showing how a betrayal of a loved one and we are shown how the villain character is completely crazy and very psychopathic, a very charismatic villain character and I really like it. At first we see this main female character, like a weak woman but during the second episode we see her smart and brave FL figure, with a new identity, she returns to the capital to take revenge and seek justice. One of the strengths of this series is how we see deep dialog and very shown the human psychiatric side, the audience immediately feels how each character feels in this series, the acting of the actors and actresses in this series is extraordinary. The portion of romantic scenes between FL and ML is not much, but even though it's a little, we can see the chemistry between FL and ML is very harmonious, we see slowly the development of their relationship, the gaze between FL and ML, is very full of millions of meanings, just by looking into the eyes of the two of them we as viewers already feel their romantic relationship. This series has a good storyline to follow, good acting to watch, this series is one of the best Chinese colossal series in 2024, although at the end of the end of the episode there are some shortcomings but still makes this series worth recommending to be the best series in 2024.

FAVE DRAMA 2024!!!

I'd give it a solid 10/10! This Chinese drama had me completely hooked! I didn't skip a single episode—definitely a new record for me. The chemistry between the leads was simply perfect, a real 'chef's kiss' moment for someone who isn't usually into romance. The tension between them kept me on the edge of my seat. Plus, every actor nailed their role. Hope to see them in their future projects!

Not enough couple screen time

Soooo I wish our leads had more screen time. There was literally only one on-screen kiss in the entire show! (The other one doesn’t count!) And there was very little skinship. The scenes they had were wonderful and filled with chemistry, but there just was not enough of them. I wish their agendas intersected more, and that we got to see them doing more things together. Sadly, we only had one episode of them actually investigating something together. Other than that they did their own thing. I also wish the ML got more scenes with his hair down 🔥 🔥 🔥 (or just more scenes of him in general). Other small criticisms - there was not a lot of variety with the costumes. I also wish the show focused a little less on the plot and more on developing the relationships. I would have liked to see more of the Duke’s friendship with the Emperor, more relationship development with the main couple that wasn’t centered on them asking each other for favors, etc. Maybe I’ve just been trying to find another show like Prisoner of Beauty with little luckkk.

God that was good. First few episodes in it felt a lot like Princess Weiyoung (which I also loved) so I knew I was going to enjoy this whether it was good or not. I pretty much enjoyed every second of this show, even the ending which I know some people are 50/50 on. The story and plot were too good, scheming from every single character truly was so fun. The main characters were all very well written, and motivations for most of them checked out. Cinematography was also amazing, the shots at the Zhennu Hall with the lantern??? chef's kiss. I've seen kunning palace and snowstorm of love, but damn this is the hottest WXY has ever been. Truly shines in his character and I can't wait for more of his lead roles. WJY, WXY, and the princess Wanning were my top actors and I really thought the chemistry between all the characters were spot on. The love, hatred, pity, and guilt were wonderfully portrayed.
So far my drama of the year. I will remember this one for a long time.

Cinematic work but weak in plot

At first, everything looks pretty and the tone of the visual was so cool, with dark brown wood of the buildings, combined with a splash of bold colour like red, teal blue, green, or yellow. The story however is nothing special. Same old same old. A woman being wrongfully condemned but able to rise with her wit and logic. The acting of everyone are superb though. Again, i absolutely love Princess Wanning, though some of her motive were questionable but her being a villain was so captivating. The ending was so unnecessary and so unnatural. Feels like it was made just for cinematic purpose.

Revenge and romance a prefect blend to create a masterpiece...

The Double is a drama i accidentally stumbled upon, since I followed Youku on Instagram and they keep uploading short clips of their new dramas. The scene i saw was Xue fang fei getting buried alive and immediately went to watch the trailer, very happy since i loved revenge dramas from my core. What i thought to be just another revenge drama, turned out to be so so much more.

What makes the Double different from the other revenge dramas?
In Double, each and every episode, even the filler ones needed to build the next arc are NEVER boring. 40 episodes felt like nothing and it had me hooked to the screen from the first episode down to the forty episode. Each and every second was important since it very beautifully tied each and every character and their arc.
Secondly, The Double presents us with 3D villains, very complex characters and not a Mary sue female lead, an immediate plus in my cards. Each and every character is very thoroughly layered, have their own motivation and ideologies behind what they do.

Character wise, Our female lead, Xue Fang Fei/Jiang Li, never forgets her ultimate goal. From the bottom of the society, we see her grow to a woman who holds a lot of authority and respect. She is extremely intelligent, a very meticulous planner, brutal when she needs to be. Our woman never forgave the ones who wronged her as it should have been. Her actions or some decisions may seem reckless sometimes, but she plays the game very well. Her cooperation, with the male lead is something worth to be remembered because of them together are absolutely banger. Kudos to Wu jin yan, for making Xue Fang fei, my top FL.

Our Male lead, Xiao Heng/Duke Su, I have no words to explain this fabulous character who infact deserved a lot more screentime. Not just an eye candy, but a full fleshed character who fights for our FL as well as his own battles. XH is cunning, ruthless, merciless when he needs to be and an absolute softie green flag for our JL. He considers life as a play, and carefully selects his pawn's for the revenge he had been eyeing on since many years. His relationship with JL has a VERY wonderful growth, they go from enemies to mutual distrust to acquaintances to mutual trust to friends and then to something more, and the journey becomes disastrous to us viewers as the tension between them is topnotch from the first episode itself. (I squealed like a child everytime they interacted lmao)

And my special appreciation towards the rain scene, which is the most romantic scene i have seen in a while. Even though the kisses are in lack, but the excess flirting and the "looks" are so hungry that it makes up for any intimacy lol. Fire chemistry of our main couple.

Xiao Heng and Xue fang fei, never once, i repeat forget or abandon their own ultimate goal while they constantly support each other, which makes them the finest pair in my eyes.

Coming to the villains, Am i a fan of the villains as well? YES.

Princess Wanning is a character that is worth to be remembered. Do i hate her with my guts? YES. Do i also feel bad for her? Also yes. Xue fang fei and Princess wanning are two sides of the same coin. Both of them suffered injustices, but had a different reaction to it. One fought her trauma and helped herself, the other one bathed in her trauma and tortured the poor innocents.
She was a complete psycho, ruthless, merciless, a villain who would make your blood boil. She suffered the retribution by the own monster she created. Her end was sad and very satisfying.

Coming to ji shuran, or the typical evil stepmother. But was she the typical jealous of her stepdaughter character? no. This was the first drama which made me realize why people like ji shuran become evil. She is smart, but her weakness just like wanning, which is love, destroys her. Her admission to her abusive father that it was him who made her such an unfeeling monster was very surprising, because we realize how one's upbringing and choices lead to such an outcome. A fresh takeout to the evil stepmother troupe for me.

Coming to Shen yu rong, Xue fang fei's ex husband aand the main antagonist of the story. First of all a huge applause for Liang yong qi, for playing this character soo damn well. This character was a character who made me sick and disgusted. He buried his wife alive, but still played the victim almost half of the show, before showing his true colours. A cheating, opportunistic, lying, manipulative bastard whose played half of the characters in the show. I love how he met his end. It was satisfying that Xue fang fei and Xiao Heng could strip off his mask. How delusional can you be to think that your wife still has feelings for you when you buried her alive? like be fr. But not to be mistaken by his initial guilt and grievances, because those were all fake, he played not only XFF but also Wanning by acting as a poor tortured man. The strongest villain in my opinion and the best of them all.

The story started out well, held its momentum, but only the ending was rushed. We needed 50 episodes to make things a lot more clearer. I will not be mad with the open ending of episode 40 since they gave us the married life extra, but i will be forever bitter about the cruel deaths of wen ji, lu ji and tong er, our favorite characters.

So, after a long drawn out essay, if you want a story with witty male and female lead with very competent villains, revenge done right with good osts (Cindy wang's ost was soo good i keep humming even as i write.) fire chemistry which has you kicking screaming even with the lack of many kisses, with a good story where every villain has a satisfying ending.
YOU NEED TO WATCH THE DOUBLE. 🔥🔥

Pleasantly Entertaining

The series starts off with quite a dramatic entrance that throws you off initially (definitely memorable) but fortunately, the series moves along quickly into a more historical setting. It evolves into a hint of The Story of Ming Lan due to the different classes involved within families, the emphasis on what women had to endure in those days, a multitude of scheme within schemes, and a sweet romance between the ML an FL. It's a few tiers below but still very much worth watching if you are a fan of Ming Lan as I am.

What makes the series great is the well-paced underlying revenge plot, a great cast, a fantastic sprinkle of humor, and a romance that doesn't trigger my eyes rolling. The FL plays her role well but the star of the show is definitely the ML and his boys as they are the ones I'm consistently looking forward to showing up in the next scene.

As some reviewers have mentioned, the FL is a bit older for her role particularly because of how young the woman she was "replacing" was. But no complaints on my end as I appreciate the older woman/younger man flip from the typical older man/younger female concept. My biggest criticism with the female FL is that her intellectual capabilities started off strong and her character gradually became more of a sidekick once she began trusting the ML to just take care of things.

The other criticism would be in the latter part of the series. It almost felt like there were either two writers or directors between the first half and the second half. The plot started getting a bit mushier and rushed and the sprinkling of humor trailed off. And while the FL did honor her promises to the women she came across, there was a tinge of her just using them as stepping stones for her own selfish desires. I also wish they resumed focus back to some key supporting characters such as the Yue family, but that may mean the series pushes far past 40 episodes. The ending was fine as well but it also felt a bit out of place.

Nevertheless, kudos to an overall entertaining series. And FYI, while the younger generation may not know her, Leanne Liu has been such a fantastic and memorable actress in so many older series. It's great to see her on screen again.

Gripping hidden identity drama where you won't skip a second!

This is the first review I am writing. Because this series is worth it.
I highly recommend you watch it! I did not skip a second and usually Chinese period dramas with 40 episodes are just too much for me.

This drama is visually beautiful, has a great story that makes sense the whole time, great characters with depth, developments and unforseen behavior that will make you glued to the TV!

The main leads do both a fantastic job portraying their characters and you can feel their chemistry! Their romance is quite slowburn but it's relieving to see a main couple without any misunderstandings for a change.

This is not your typical c drama, although there are a lot of misunderstandings and mistreatments of the female lead, you will never feel helpless and hopeless because the FL fights for herself and collects supporters and friends along her way who will always help her and support her.

The villains in this drama were the BEST. I really hated them, was afraid of them and in the end pitied them, their acting was phenomenal. And they had a huge character development, the main couple did great, as everyone did, but the villains carried the whole show for me!

Watch it if you like happy endings, a strong but beautiful female lead, a smart but a little cold handsome male lead, hidden identities done right and great great acting!

10 out of 10 for me!

Easy on the eyes

March 2025
Another C-drama that gripped me, but I did feel it dragged on at times, and could have been shorter, without the story suffering.

Wu Jin Yan was very good in the FL role of a woman betrayed, who takes on a new identity to seek revenge through justice. This actress is excellent in portraying strong female characters, rather than the childish and saccharine ones. I thought she was excellent in 'Kill Me Love Me', too.

Loved the ML, Wang Xing Yue. He had great presence and portrayed the brilliant, but cold and seemingly ruthless, Xiao Heng, perfectly.

There's actually an 11-year age gap between them (she is older), but I'd never have guessed it. Sometimes when the difference is that way around, their chemistry can be a bit strained or unnatural (K-drama 'Knight Flower' springs to mind, even though I loved it), but not in this.

The plot is straight forward, but the story twists and turns. It is a ruthless tale, with some vile characters, and some tragic moments, but has enough light humour and slower paced moments to balance that. There's some great banter between Jiang-lee/Fang-fei and Heng, too. It's an intelligent script overall.

The backstory of the most horrible character (and cause of Fang-fei's suffering), should have prompted sympathy for them, but they were too horrible for me to accept any of their behaviour. Just awful, and I was cross about the outcome for them, which I wanted to be worst!

There are the usual jealousies between siblings, family ('Clan') rivalry, with Royal shenanigans thrown in. It's a decent watch though, and didn't feel 'done before'.

I had favourites, liked the mix, and it made a change to have women that could outsmart men, and men who were as cunning and ambitious for status, as the women usually are.

I'll be hunting out more from both leads.

Definitely the dark horse of cdrama for this year

People have already reviewed and said everything there needs to be said so I will just outline what I liked or didn't like:

Liked:
1. The acting; The acting of the main leads especially wu jinyan was so stellar that in some parts I would forget that I am watching her act. She made sure that we would remember xue fangfei/jiang li. Her beauty and her expressiveness literally shined through the screen. The way she could deliver a thousand emotions through her eyes in a second was so good. Same goes for wang xingyue as duke su. Although he did not have much screen presence, he still managed to DELIVER. The moves that would have looked ridiculous and cringy with another actor, he made it work. Both of their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS even when they are just looking at each other which was 90% responsible for this drama being a success. Shout out also to Shen Yurong and Princess wanning's actors because my goodness, they dominated almost every scene they were in. The way shen yurong's actor made me feel pity for the character yet making sure that we know how evil he is, was done so artfully I had to be impressed. Also ji shuran's actor, she played the tropey stepmother role but still managed to shine though even when wu jinyan was delivering a spectacular scene.
2. The plot, characters, and pacing: Cdramas are getting good at pacing and its nice to see this being reflected in The Double. The plot had significant amount of twists and turns to keep the viewers engaged till the end. The diverse range of characters gave this drama life as well as the character developments. Not everyone received justice or happy endings but you understand the motivations and aspirations behind their actions, even the villains. The double is one of the few cdramas where morally grey characters were portrayed brilliantly. I also liked the subtle emphasis on how systematic misogyny, the effects of bad parenting especially by the fathers towards the daughters, the implications of sexual violence even towards the main character and how the producers did not shy away from it.
3. The OST: Chenle's "Live on love on" was solid art. The opening theme was beautiful as well.
4. The cinematography was better compared to other youku production.

Disliked:
1. Although the plot is pretty solid some times you have to suspend logic to appreciate the drama in my opinion. The slapstick comedy at inappropriate times did not help. Them using wugong for not other reason than being flashy was seriously weird.
2. The leads had excellent chemistry and the romance progression felt natural but did not at the same time which is understandable given romance is not the focus of the drama but I wished there would have been more substance. Like in LLTG although there was an overarching plot the romance was also prioritized as the ml and fl gets entangled early on and it feels more developed. But with this, other than the chemistry and the subtle understanding by the audience that the leads are falling in love, there is not much to go on. It feels like the romance has taken a back seat.
3. The ending felt weird and unnecessary. I know they did that for the dramatics as this is a very soap opera-ish drama but the ending was literally not needed. They could have ended with XH and XF married, a time lapse for 1 year, then cut to them visiting tong'er and jiang li's tomb with a voice over and that would have been enough. That battle scene should have been shown early on which would have increased the angst. The slow burn would have worked out better in that way just like how it did in LLTG. But a scene at the end just goes to show they just wanted to create some hype and nothing else.

It's quite an enjoyable drama and probably the best one in this year judging by the cdrama drought.
