The Dark Horse of The Year

"Blossom" shows that a great story and solid execution can outshine big budgets and famous actors. This drama, though simple on the surface, stands out as one of the best of the year.

It's such a heartfelt story, pulling you into its world with raw emotions and thoughtful storytelling. The casts, while not A-lister, delivers powerful performances that feel genuine and natural. Their chemistry brings the characters to life in a way that’s truly captivating.

What makes "Blossom" special is its direction and script. Every scene feels purposeful, and the pacing keeps you hooked from start to finish.

"Blossom" proves you don’t need flashy effects or big names to make something unforgettable. It’s a hidden gem that deserves all the praise, truly the dark horse of the year.

Best of 2024

Y'all this one is for the romance girlies.
Can officially say with my whole chest that this was the best period drama of the 14 that I watched this year. Probably the best Cdrama of 2024, at least of the 23 that I watched.
From start to finish cinematography, lighting, direction, action, acting, musical score, story/writing were top tier. The added little extra bit of running comedy with the slaps will forever live rent free in my head. I promise you, if you are someone who enjoys period dramas and romance you wont regret starting this one. The only spoiler I will give in this is the answer to the most common question I get from binge watchers who wait until the end of show to start watching.
Sad Ending, Open Ending, Happy for Now, Happy Ending, or Happily Ever After?

Happily Ever After, Five year flashforward for Epilogue after satisfying conclusion to other storylines . Plus extra bonus scene at the end of the credits.

The happy ending we needed after the sad-fest that was 2024 c-dramas!

The way I knew this was going to be that show then moment I laid eyes on that trailer is actually insanity. I saw that trailer and I counted down for this release date and I was checking these comments and watching the edits like no one else. And the moment their marriage ep dropped? I was up at 10 am in the morning every day watching this as it aired. This was the first c-drama that I kept up with daily, and no fucking regrets at all. It had everything I wanted in terms of romance and more. Grey hair and that horse kiss was all I needed to sell me on this show, and it fucking DELIVERED!!!

2024 was nothing but sad dramas, and I went on a binge to watch as many sad endings as possible. Honestly, I was ready to sacrifice the happy ending for Song Mo to get his grey hair back, but I guess a happy ending will do after the devastating year that was 2024 c-dramas. And the fact that we got a proper wedding scene??? WE NEED MORE OF THEM!!! It's so annoying that we don't proper ones while the couple are in love. It's always arranged or forced and it's so jarring. So props to the director. But damn tho, Duke Ying and the Emperor... sheesh... there was a little somthin' somethin' going on there. I just kept side eying the two can't lie.

A Masterpiece of Chinese Historical Drama

"Blossom" is a 2024 drama that tells a story of rebirth and redemption. The show follows Dou Zhao, who, after a life full of betrayal and loss, gets a second chance to change her fate. The plot mixes romance, mystery, and political intrigue in an engaging and emotional way. It avoids unnecessary drama between the main characters, focusing instead on their mutual respect and teamwork. Each episode builds the story steadily without feeling rushed or slow.

Meng Zi Yi and Li Yun Rui deliver strong, natural performances. Meng Zi Yi, as Dou Zhao(FL), shows a deep transformation from a wounded woman to a clever strategist. Li Yun Rui plays Song Mo(ML), a fair but troubled general, adding depth to his character. Their on-screen chemistry makes their scenes very touching and powerful, and the supporting cast adds even more detail to the story.

The visuals of "Blossom" are stunning, capturing the spirit of the Ming dynasty with detailed costumes and sets. The cinematography, with its artistic framing and symbolic use of purple, enhances the storytelling. The first episode sets a high standard with its dramatic and beautifully shot scenes.

The original soundtrack is another highlight, perfectly matching the mood and elevating key moments in the drama.

While there are a few pacing issues towards the end and some minor changes from the original book that might disappoint certain fans, these are small problems compared to the drama’s many strengths.

Overall, "Blossom" is a great example of what Chinese historical dramas can achieve. It entertains, leaves a lasting impression, and is a must-watch for fans of the genre.

Worth the Hype, Really

Saw this drama release on Youtube but didn't watch it because of the unremarkable name. It wasn't until people went wild that I decided to give it a try. Definitely don't think it was a waste of time.

'Blossom' is a drama adaptation of a web novel with the same name (let me side track for a moment: can we please start having more original content?). In my opinion, making a good adaptation of a written novel has its pitfalls that not many people talk about. Things like script arrangement, storyline fidelity, character development are all impacted when you have to cut a novel down to fit the number of episodes. When it's a smaller novel with a simpler storyline, it's manageable. We've seen successful examples like Hidden Love (143 chapters). Longer novels or those with complex storylines suffer a bit because there is a decision that needs to be made: a) cut material, b) leave it but speed everything up, or c) go off the rails and make the drama 'loosely' adapted. An example of a more successfully adapted drama is Love Like Galaxy which chose to elongate the drama series to have sufficient time for story telling. Blossom like a couple of other dramas this year successfully avoids a lot of those pitfalls.

However. what makes Blossom stand out from other C-dramas this year was the subtlety of the acting and the characters decision making. The FL who experienced rebirth was not immediately this all powerful character with a golden finger. The ML who was adept in martial arts also wasn't all knowing and has his fatal flaw of impatience and acting out of impulse when it comes to his family. Meng Zi Yi, as an actor, had to walk the fine line of smart but not all powerful and makes mistakes but not dumb. Easy to describe but hard to execute. We've seen countless examples where the FL is almost too OP for the villains or too dumb/naive to be considered the main lead. Meng Zi Yi did a fantastic job portraying a strong FL who has a good noggin on her shoulders. Li Yun Rui, similarly, had to tread the fine line of powerful but human in addition to a fatal flaw of a lot of C-drama MLs: the curse of the stone block. All too many times we've have MLs that portray strong = no facial emotion besides ocassional anger. Li Yun Rui did a stunning job in portraying himself as a ML who was strong yet capable of emotions. In the beginning of the drama, expecially with his encounters with FL, Li Yun Rui showcases an array of emotions: resolve when deciding to take revenge on his uncle's killers, trust in FL, betrayal when he believed FL to have betrayed him, admiration when he slowly gets to know FL, and later being completely smitten. Each emotion was subtly different from each other and cannot be confused with a similar emotion.

That being said, the chemistry between the leads was off the hook. I truly was invested in their romantic development as a couple. It did not seem artificial and there was a palpable tension between them when they become more and more attracted with each other. Both ML and FL were attracted to each other. It wasn't just ML or FL's one sided pursuit of the other. That one scene where ML asks if FL truly wanted to get married to her fiance nearly took me out. Though it was a tropey kabedon, there was nothing forceful about it. FL wasn't some helpless lass trapped by this charismatic man there to force her to love him. I think that's definitely something that I appreciate about Li Yun Rui's portrayal of ML's love for FL. It never felt forceful. While I cannot tell if it was because of his acting or if his features weren't as sharp (like pointy sharp, not intelligent sharp), but Li Yun Rui's Song Mo was a gentle protector. Swoon~

So then here are my nitpicks... I think that the character list was a tiny bit too expansive. Because it was adapted from a 523 chapter novel, there are bound to be arcs and loads of characters. While I can see how they add depth to the story and create the illusion of mini arcs the ML and FL go through to get stronger, I think taking some of these characters out wouldn't have changed much of the main plot line. Examples of minor characters that I'd probably cut out (based on their role in the drama): the Crown Princess (1-2 eps), the Grand Princess (2-4 eps), Zhao Zhang Ru (5-9 eps), Official Mu (eh, this is an iffy one to cut; 2-3 eps). Regardless, I think they've already done a fantastic job at making the script concise and well developed. Another nitpick was the villains' endings... They were all pretty whitewashed. While I could see that the script writers wanted to give the characters a sense of depth, the sudden change in tone when portraying them made their individual demises a bit lackluster. Several characters had revealed or suggested that they fell in love. Others had off screen deaths. It was a little unsatisfactory because the ending was ever so slightly rushed. You can tell it was rushed starting from the moment ML's poison was revealed because at that point, things started to focus less on ML and FL and how they solve things and more about the plot from a narrator's point of view. Going from the characters' personal perspectives to a narrator's perspective definitely saved story telling time but it made the drama less immersive because it makes the characters seem more like storybook characters and not people.

All in all, it was still a fantastic drama. Personally, I might even choose Blossom over 'The Double', 'In Blossom', 'Blossoms in Adversity', 'The Rise of Ning', 'The Princess Royal', and 'The Story of Pearl Girl'.
Don't come after me, it might just be the post-drama emotions, but I really really really loved Li Yun Rui's portrayal of ML. I asked for romance and I got romance. Most importantly, I got the happy ending I didn't get from 'The Double' and 'The Story of Pearl Girl'. I'm tempted to include 'A Journey to Love' but the ending kinda fits with the genre of old-timey, Hong Kong TVB-esque wuxia.

TLDR: Really loved this drama. Worth the time. Other dramas listed above were good watches too. If I had to pick a similar drama I liked that was less political intrigue-y but won't make you cry, it would be 'The Autumn Ballad'.

those layers of purple that captured me

Remind me to get back to this review. I started a few episodes and just have to give credit where credit is due. This drama pulls you in quickly, and it isn't doing so in a flashy or repetitive way either. What this drama has is a solid script, and paired with earnest performances from the cast, this drama therefor is a good watch.

What makes this drama so special is I see it as a dark horse. The budget isn't as big as an S++, and it uses a lot of organic sets with direction choices that make this dramas appeal to seem a lot more expensive than it really is. This is an example of a director doing a really good job, where some directions can ruin the budge given to them, this does the opposite.

The writing for the characters is natural, and so are the relationships. Keeping it brief, the main pairing is just a really mature couple. They communicate with eachother, and there wasn't any moments of drawn out miscommunication to fill up episodes. Each episode connects to the next, and nothing was filler. I was surprised as I watch each episode and for me they end pretty quickly, I never check the time to see if I am done with an episode.

Blossom was never an over the top drama, its simplicity is where it shines. The pacing isn't coming across as slow, and overall it is just a sincere effort from everyone involved. I'm happy it has gotten a lot of recognition, and especially for the leads. I love dramas the break through barriers when it comes to the money put into them.

What I liked here is that everything came full circle, and no part of the story had a gap to it. Sincere efforts reap good rewards after all.

Healthy CP, characters are not what they seem

What a pleasant surprise for 2024, a year when a lot of cdramas that came out were meh or otherwise failed to hold my attention. What I enjoyed the most was the main couple's healthy relationship (and we actually get to see them together for half the series, not just at the end). After that, the other thing I enjoyed was just how many characters lead you to believe they are one way but in fact are not what they appear. Even ones I was sure we knew their character and motivations, ended up surprising me. A lot of twists and turns. I imagine on the rewatch, I would pick up more clues hinting to it all along; plus, these reveals of true character or motivations do not feel like a betrayal of how they were previously written/like sloppy writing, but in fact do feel true to the essence of the characters.

The first arc is fast-paced, and while I didn't find any part of the drama boring or slow, others might have. I'll admit, it is reaaaaaaaaally tempting to give up part-way in with how frustrating some characters are like the evil stepmother. Don't give up! Like I remember someone right at a really frustrating part around ep 11 or 12 wanting to give up, but by ep 16 there is a major breakthrough with a character providing pivotal support to help turn things around.

Hooray for Li Yunrui and Meng Ziyi, who previously always only had support roles, finally getting a big break. I was not expecting Li Yunrui, who did so well as a weak scholar in Love Like the Galaxy, to pull off playing an intimidating general.

when you root for them individually and together... it's magic

ohmygoodness this put me through it (and i love it). don't you just love it when the main leads are both hot, smart, skilled and can be funny too? then it even gets better because they have so much chemistry! that's song mo and dou zhao. i've never rooted for a couple's happiness and triumph so hard. i admire their resilience and how they actually made each other better. every wins our leads get, it was so satisfying. that's also thanks to how good the antagonists in this story and man, we got multiple villains here and when i tell you my blood was boiling everytime omg lol i don't know how i'll rank them but wang ying xue that bitch (she's so freaking good). so yeah from the acting to the story to the romance, this delivered for me. at first, i was overwhelmed with the politics and the names but once i got the hang of it, i was good. this brought out the emotions in me. i cried, i laughed, i got mad and i cheered.

meng zi yi and li yun rui are officially on my favorites list now. they did so good. but even the supporting actors are amazing. again, the villains! especially the women! also shout out to ming (again wang ying xue you stupid bitch lmao) and ansu (i, too, was heartbroken when i saw how song han started changing. their ending! sad but incredible).

ps: it's actually the king and duke of ding's love story if you think about it lol

really solid drama, the best of the recent wave of feminist revenge dramas!

jiu chong zi/blossom is a genuinely solid show, and i'm so thankful. pacing is generally great, filmmaking is great, both main characters are well written and the plot is considered and cared for. the greatest weaknesses are in its villains and secondary characters, so the entire world of the story is not as rich as it could be, but this show has most of its bases covered.

first of all. their storytelling ability is like, actually at the basic minimum of what i would like from a show, but most idol cdramas cannot meet it. from shooting, pacing, composition, and lighting, it does a very good job of delivering the tension and emotional beats that a story needs. sometimes the editing is Weird tho, like important scenes feel like they're missing or chopped up, or dont get the time they need. however, there are scenes that stay in my mind rent free just because they're well shot and the story is well told. namely the dream sequences, the time travel parts- i was genuinely emotional seeing the scene where dou zhao and song mo find each other and change their fate. sometimes it just hits! the plot and themes are mostly fine. plot is nothing we haven't seen before, typical family drama + revenge, political machinations and scheming eventually culminating in an attempted coup. it was fine because it was at least all set up from the beginning. themes could be articulated more clearly but are a general confucian patriarchal family system bad!! you can change your fate if you work hard enough!! and that's good and fine.

i really like both main characters and i think both are well written. dou zhao is of course, a bit of a superwoman mary sue as it goes in these sorts of feminist revenge dramas. the function is that she has to Keep Winning so the audience can live vicariously through her, and in order to do that, she needs to be superhumanly strong, capable, smart, ambitious, and a step ahead of the enemy at every turn. in something like the double it was extremely grating because she had no substance otherwise. however, dou zhao does have more substance and feels real and believable. her superhuman-ness can be explained by her already being 30 years old by the time she restarts her life, and working and training based off of knowledge she already has of the future. the degree to how hard she worked is also clearly due to not only learning from her mistakes of her past life, but her traumas from that past life. she knows not only from the death of her mother, but from her own lived experience what it's like to suffer by the confucian patriarchal role assigned to her as a woman. it makes it a lot easier to accept how easily she stays ahead of the game. i also really liked her real fear of love and marriage, inability to accept help from others, and how unromantic she is- stemming from her traumas! of course she eventually is able to fully enjoy her relationship with song mo, but these sorts of weaknesses are what makes her feel more believable.

usually in these types of feminist revenge dramas, the female lead with a mission is well written (or just passable) and her male counterpart has nothing to offer other than in being the trophy she wins at the end. not song mo! song mo's storyline, his Great Chinese Complex and struggle with filial piety, his flaws and his growth are all really compelling. usually they give the ml some Cool, Hard, Revenge backstory or mission and it feels super flat because it's obviously not the story they want to tell. however, song mo is obviously cared for, and his genuine struggle between filial piety towards an evil and abusive father, loyalty to an unjust and corrupt system is well done. his eventual choice is wonderful as well, and i wish more cdramas allowed our male leads to choose to leave, give up the system and live for themselves. another point!!!! a lot of times i see this male character type of male lead as having the aesthetic of being brutal, violent, impulsive and cruel however, they can never follow through by actually making them do anything bad or truly uncomfortable on screen. they never actually suffer, just throw their power around with no consequences and are ultimately still a sea of green flags from beginning to end. however, we see song mo be ACTUALLY violent first of all, and be almost foolishly impulsive at times. i like that he literally tries to kill his dad and doesnt give a shit when he dies. dad has absolutely no redeeming qualities LFGG i'm sick to death of nezha style rewrites where actually our parents are sympathetic and loved us all along!!! sometimes you just have an evil dad you have to kill!!!! we also see song mo truly suffer the consequences of his actions, and it's dou zhao, his great strategist and partner, who teaches him patience and how to play a long game, rather than run into situations head first and end up playing into the enemy's hands. in turn he teaches dou zhao that she can be stronger with support, and that it's okay to rely on others. it's really basic, but you would not believe how many romantic cdramas can't write a relationship where the characters actually inspire one another in a positive way, building a strong relationship!!!

ultimately the greatest flaws in this show are the villains and some of their logic. wang yingxue is extremely flat, just an archetypal evil stepmother who's been plotting and scheming since day one. inept father who is mostly blind to stepmother's evildoing is also overdone and uninteresting here. dad does get better and learns from his mistakes, but like honestly, who cares. uncle also has some small bits of writing that are interesting so i think he's fine considering his small role. song han is also.... i dont even know. i actually think he has some potential and there's things about him that are interesting, but i still feel like the character was flubbed and shoehorned, could've been a very compelling character if they wrote him better from beginning to end. also... qing wang and his mom!!!!! what a flop!!!!!! i actually thought the empress was an interesting villain and had sooo much potential. in fact considering why she got jokerfied, i was lowkey rooting for her. but no, the ending message was still...old and evil patriarchal system must still be maintained??/ tho empress would have also maintained a corrupt system? i dont know the writing was unclear for all of this, but i'm glad song mo and dou zhao got to leave it.

other side characters that get the short end of the stick... ming'er :( i was actually so sad that she just died, and it seemed to be her death's only purpose was to punish her mother and wei tingyu. i thought she also had potential to grow... i wish she got to divorce and find her own path!! it was enough that she had the miscarriage and suffered the abuse she did!! she already learned her lesson but they had to just kill her off? ji yong is also just soooooo blah and nothing. i dont even really understand what he's here for other than plot reasons and to help out when he's needed. and oh my god, miao ansu......... what a waste of space. literally nothing going on with her. watching her and song han's scenes were EXCRUCIATING. both of them were just so empty, had nothing to give, acting was mid, literally just went on 2x speed through all their scenes. i really dont know why they wasted so much of our time with their relationship when they could've either just cut it all out or actually wrote them better.

ok that's it. the good things about this drama still make up for all of its shortcomings!! i genuinely highly recommend this show to all if you want a fun revenge drama with a bit of substance!

love blossoming in unexpected situations

The strongest part of this drama is the couple because I ate up every scene where they interacted. Their love and bond is adorable and everlasting. There could have been more romance scenes but I still loved it nonetheless. I literally need to find a man like Song Mo or a woman like Dou Zhao because they were such amazing characters. The plot follows a basic premise, but it wrapped up satisfyingly. The side characters were not bad and I enjoyed their paths. Overall, this drama made me laugh and blush, and made me happy with the ending and justice served. <3

My all-time favorite C-Drama!

I’m finally writing a review for "Blossom", after rewatching it three times, and it only came out like 10 months ago!! I’ve never rewatched any other show this many times before.

Initially, I even dropped the drama a few episodes after the main leads’ wedding (Ep. 18) because I felt the story was starting to drag. But I’m so glad I picked it up again, because "Blossom" has proven itself to be my absolute favorite C-drama! Definitely recommend 💕

Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui’s chemistry is unmatched. The way their characters gaze each other, those subtle gazes omg!! And the quiet tenderness between them: every time they appeared on screen together, my heart melted 😭 I’ve never felt this kind of warmth watching any other on-screen couple before. Dou Zhao and Song Mo were truly made for each other, total green flags! It was so beautiful to watch how their relationship developed. I absolutely love it when we get smart, capable leads who bring out the best in each other. I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever get over them, and now I can't wait for "Tigers Sniff the Rose"! 🎉🎉

The acting throughout felt so natural, and the story was beautifully executed. I especially loved how the revenge plot unfolded slowly yet satisfyingly. Every character, even the supporting ones, was well-developed and had their own meaningful story. Although I initially thought Song Han’s switch-up was too much, his arc ended up adding so much depth, not just to him, but also to Miao Ansu and the overall story.
(Spoiler warning: I’m still heartbroken that Dou Ming had to die in this lifetime though. Honestly, words can’t express how much I despise Wei Tingyu and his sister after everything they did omg)

And on top of all that, the cinematography, color grading and overall production were absolutely stunning. Truly a work of art - the production team ate!!

PS: Out of all the C-drama generals I’ve seen, Song Mo remains my favorite, hands down! And of course, Dou Zhao is one of my favorite female leads! Her character was beautifully written. Something about her patience and her inner resilience that moved me.

So, farewell to my beloved Zhao Zhao Mo Mo, love them 朝朝暮暮, forever, day and night 🥹

A really good, addictive all rounder, that meanders a bit towards the end

This drama launches with two addictive plots running 1) will our main characters be able to find love despite all the political turmoil ? 2) will our main characters be able to secure justice, righteous revenge and yet still have a happy ever after?

As the main romance plot starts resolving, a LOT of screen time is wasted on uninspiring terrible characters takes their place. This was so aggravating for me I almost DNF.

BUT, I really wanted to know if it all works out in the end. Unlike most other Chinese historical political dramas I've seen, this drama really hid the ending well. I wasn't quite sure how it would resolve until it did.

The acting is great, the music and production values are very good, and the pacing for the first 2/3rds and last 3 episodes was really good. If you like this genre, this drama is a must watch.
