Agenda ruined a great drama

In short. I thought this was such a great drama, a 9.0 drama - until episode 7 finished.
I am so annoyed by political agenda being forced into every story, even when it doesn't fit AT ALL, like here.

Anything would have made sense about the dead brother - that he wasn't allowed to study photography which obviously meant the world to him, that his rich parents really didn't approve of his girldfriend and he wouldn't have wanted to live without her, that he had been forced into the military by his father and decided to die instead, I would have even bought it if they had said he was secretely gay, as his character was played like I could have imagined that.

But to force a trans story into this, reasoning it with something like 'he always played with dolls when he was little' (which means NOTHING concering your later sexuality by the way) it's just unbearable. Netflix puts this into everything these days and I won't watch anything anymore if they do it as badly as here and ruin a good drama like that for them to get the agenda box checked on their papers.

And don't get me wrong, I am old enough to have seen 'boys don't cry' in the theater in the 1990s, and it was a true story about a real trans person and it was very touching. But what they do these days from tv production giants like nextflix, pushing this into every other story forced and kind of randomly? No.
I'm dropping this after episode 7 and I give it an 'unfair' 1.0 just for this reason, ignoring the many good aspects this drama had before.

The depiction of the ugly side of friendships

We all have a definition of toxic relationships whether it may be love or friendships, or an images of what a toxic relationship can be

I considered this a toxic story.

When I first saw the trailer, I knew we were gonna be in for a toxic ride.

In the beginning, it was kinda hard to watch because it didn’t really interest me. The thing with melodramas is that they can be really well done or disappointingly boring.

Story-wise, it was decent. I did find it a shame that the guy was a pushing factor in the drama of the friendship and that once again it's romance that is used as a plot tool to separate and cause drama among the two female leads. I rather wish we got more focus on the two women instead of a trio, a good majority of the time

I know sang yeon was the antagonist this whole time, leading to a lot of people hating on her, but I would say that the world isn’t always in black or white but morally gray, and that can also apply to characters and stories.

I’m not saying sangyeon deserves redemption; she rightfully got what she deserved by the end of the series.
I myself relate a lot to sangyeon cause I share that sentiment of loneliness all too well but also the feeling of inferiority.
We could see that she drove herself to the results of her life by the end of the series, a.k.a self-sabotage. I felt a lot of pity for her because all she wanted was to be loved and accepted.

I consider their friendship to be rather mentally abusive. They both had their wrongs during their friendship and college years but ultimately it was sangyeon who choses to end it due to her jealousy and envy. Also, if an ex-friend like her reached out to me like that after what she did, I would be mad!

I myself went through a toxic friendship with someone I considered my best friend of 6 years, so the betrayals that hurt the most are always the people who are close to you.

I think it portrayed it rather realistically on how ugly friendships between humans can be and how emotions like envy, jealousy, etc can be such a driving point to crumble that structure built.

I noticed how, when they met up for the third time in their lives (office), Sangyeon grew out her hair and became more social whilst Eun Jeong sported shorter hair and tomboyish clothes, as if sangyeon was trying to imitate her in a sense? idk if it is intentional or not, but that wig was cheap as hell.

I think 15 episodes were enough to tell and depict the three stages in their lives and how their friendship impacted each other's lives.

To end this off, it was interesting but I would not rewatch it. The acting was done really well and I saw comments about the two leading actress were not being convincing enough as young adults during those college years but I think otherwise cause Kim Go-eun looked so young!

I wish that no one, like Eun Jeong or just people in general, finds themselves in these sorts of friendships that will hurt them deeply cause it is hell!

I hope that people can be more kind and understanding towards one another because sometimes our worst enemies are ourselves and we fail to notice before it’s too late.

No One Mourns the Wicked

I did not like Sang Yeon one bit, but if death is involved, and since the acting was top-notch, I could not help it: I am a crybaby at my core, I will cry if it gets sad. This show and its depiction of a female friendship that gets lost in a cycle of toxicity throughout childhood years until adulthood … aye, who did not have a toxic friendship break-up in their life? It hit hard. Sang Yeon’s reflections about her mother and brother towards the end, and how they died, also hit me on a more personal level.

SY is not a likable character. She is pathetic, self-destructive, and a saboteur. It honestly got intolerable once we entered the women’s adult years and they ended up working at the same place. She reached a point of no return there for me; at your big age you still act like a child? Her life wasn’t easy, her environment at home not as warm and loving as Eun Jungs’s, however, your circumstances are not an excuse to be a shitty person to someone else. Especially not someone who tolerates you using them as a punching bag all the time. This relationship between SY and EJ was emotionally draining, and once we got to the present bits it turned into this emotional manipulation to evoke sympathy. The “I have cancer”-card was pulled; “I know I should not be here with how I treated you”’s were said. Then leave. Genuinely, I don’t know if I could have been as strong, or forgiving, as Eun Jung. Sang Yeon, at the end of the show, was someone I gladly wanted to be gone. In her self-destruction, she took everyone down with her, ruining friendships and relationships, playing the victim, imposing herself when she knew she wasn’t liked that way, etc. Yet she complained that her life was awful, that she was alone … And whose fault is that? Of course, it’s easy to blame everyone else instead of yourself, and SY was a master at this. Playing the victim and thinking the world revolved around you final boss.

Unfortunately, I am a sensitive being, so if death is depicted, and you realize that at the end of it, they were just two girls again, it still hurt. Maybe because all this pain and loss was dumped on EJ’s shoulders in the end. She may have found some closure, somehow, but it doesn’t change the fact that it needed this drastic outcome for SY to apologize. And I am glad that EJ called her out on it, to be honest. I will never rewatch this show, because I would just get mad all over again, but also because this shit hurt… just a little! Great show, great acting, breezy OST that lightens the heaviness of the subject matter, but it’s one-time-experience.

I thought a lot about rating this series, but in the end I decided like this. I also said that I would give it a chance, even though the actress playing the main character is not one of my favorite actors and I find her series kinda boring. However, she pleasantly surprised me here. The series only has 15 episodes, not 16 if you thought like I originally thought and it is very, very emotional. I expected it to be just two friends with some past and there would be drama between them, but I really didn't expect it to be such an emotional journey... I especially didn't expect the ending, the last episode totally destroyed me and I cried like a little child. Yes, it has a sad ending, I warn you in advance. But I really liked that I was on Sanghyeon's side for a while and then on Eunjung's side (I still don't know which one I liked better, because one moment annoyed me and then the other). We also got to see different kinds of perspectives and in the end it ended the way it did and it destroyed me so if you enjoy series about friendship, life and with a touch of romance (and a sad ending), this is exactly for you

It's good, but not great.

It's an almost great drama, but several things hold it back from being great. The setup was a little bland, but it was necessary to understand why exactly Sangyeon and Eunjung had developed both their relationship and other relationships the way they did. It's actually thanks to those first few episodes that I didn't hate Sangyeon or think she didn't deserve friendship for a large part of the series.



However, things came to a point in 2nd half of the series where I found it harder and harder to understand Sangyeon's actions. I can understand why they had a friendship breakup the first time. No matter how I think about it, the story really could not have played out differently at that point, considering everyone's history between Eunjung, Sangyeon, and Kim Sanghak. But the 2nd time was very overblown on Sangyeon's end; the writer made her overreact to Eunjung in a way Eunjung hadn't done to Sangyeon. It made it harder to empathize with Sangyeon when, for more than half the series, I'd understood where Sangyeon was coming from, even if I didn't think her actions were smart. The writer should've handled their friendship breakups differently, or even given us a bigger look into how Sangyeon was feeling that 2nd time, so I could empathize more. Eunjung could've been a lot meaner, knowing everything that happened. I also did not care for how the writer handled the brother's subplot. There weren't many hints or much of a lead-up as to why he handled his situation in such a way. Once the viewer finds out, it's almost brushed over because there are so many things going on, and it's barely brought up again compared to other things that hold everyone's relationships back.

That being said, I think they have a unique relationship; you can't quite separate the two from each other, and they always end up back in each other's lives. They've come to depend on each other in ways most don't, yet they challenge each other to greater accomplishments. And most importantly, because they'd known each other for so long, they can't erase the happier moments they shared. So I understand why it ended the way it did, even if I don't agree with an illness being the reason why Eunjung had to rekindle her relationship with Sangyeon. I also really appreciate that Netflix gave us 15 episodes to really have time to sit with how their relationship formed and ended throughout 40 years. Even if the story moves a little slow, I've yet to see a series handle something like this with a shorter episode run and still answer most questions without rushing through things and skipping necessary parts.

Acting-wise, I think everyone was pretty good. But especially Kim Goeun, she has a certain level of intensity yet feels delicate when needed be. I don't think this drama would be the same without someone like Kim Goeun, who can play someone so emotionally open. I really came around to OST by the end, as well; it suits the drama. And I loved the cinematography choices the team made. Because of that, the drama is a beautiful watch.

What a bunch of crap!

This review is more of a rant for how disappointing this story was. I kept watching hoping it would get better. But I finally skipped through much of the last two episodes cause I just wanted to be done with tragic story of a true definition of toxic love.

For me, I don’t believe someone has the right to ruin my life just because theirs is crap. That’s not friendship!! Friendship wants you to be happy, successful and all the good things life can offer. Miss me with the gaslighting and passive aggressive manipulation. No one owes you a good life . What a toxic relationship these girls had from the get go.

The most interesting part of the story could’ve been the brother’s . I had a sense that was his issue and so I give credit for the little bit this story revealed about his character .

All of these actors told this story well. They’re all fantastic in their craft! But the story for me was utter nonsense. I realize the cultural difference (I’m a self-full American🤣) when I watch these dramas. But really! “With friends like this, who needs enemies.”

I was truly looking forward to these actors in this drama. I would not watch this again and I would not recommend it to anyone. What a tremendous waste of my precious viewing time!

It's a story of a little bit of everything

The truth is I didn't expect that much, I knew she was going to die, but it was still sad, I hated her, I loved her and I cried. At the end, it shows too many things, like first love, blurred feelings, and real pain.I recommend it even if it's sad and leaves you crying. The truth is it's sad to have to see how a person you loved and hated dies, but you could have been with them until the last moment of their life There is much more than just sadness, but it still makes you cry like a child. If you are sentimental, more than anything, I would have loved a different ending, not so painful, but it was very beautiful.

Esto es la crónica de una amistad.
Ryu Jung Eun y Cheon Sang Yeon se conocen desde muy pequeñas y a pesar de sus diferencias construyen una amistad que fluye a través del tiempo en un vaivén de emociones que nos muestra que del amor al odio hay un solo paso y estas dos amigas lo cruzan constantemente.
"Nos destruí a nosotras porque quería destruirte... porque quería destruirme" Este fragmento de la introspección de CSY resume perfectamente lo que fue la relación entre ella y RJE, una relación de la cual trataban de escapar pero siempre terminaban volviendo a ella.
Tanto Cheon Sang Yeon como Ryu Jung Eun son personajes que evolucionan de acuerdo a como interaccionan, cada una juega un papel importante en la vida de la otra, cada encuentro es un choque y sus personalidades se forman de los fragmentos que quedan.
Dejando de lado la historia que me parece muy refrescante en el sentido de que el el romance no es el tema central hay que marcar notablemente las actuaciones de ambas protagonistas que lo dan todo y te llevan a un espiral de emociones a lo largo de cada capítulo.
