Finished ep 1. That is probably the darkest introduction to a show I’ve ever watched. Absolutely fantastic production quality—it reminds me a lot of The Story of Minglan. The clothing textures, cinematography, and colour grading all have such a natural, warm, earthy feeling to them. Really excited to keep watching, honestly.

I was scrolling through TikTok and saw some videos and comments talking about the ML's looks, and I couldn't help but giggle because we're talking about THE Liu Xueyi here 😂.     They’re just saying he looks really old to be ML. I mean, he’s always had facial lines even when he was younger....it’s just more noticeable in this drama because they use very little filter.

    I saw some Chinese viewers complaining about this in other dramas (basically, Liu Xue Yi doesn't have that boyish, youthful look). He has strong, rugged features (which they don't care for). But on YouTube, I saw chinese people making that inappropriate comment—and then the foreigners (us) stepping in to say: "Are you crazy? Blind? He is incredibly handsome—the epitome of masculine beauty."
    I saw complaints like that regarding another drama, but that’s dying down. In this current drama, I haven't seen anyone complaining. Not everyone thinks that way; many people notice and admire Liu Xue Yi's unique facial features (I believe the majority admires them, and only a minority is shortsighted).

With so many servants, how did she ultimately become the head wife and be with the male lead? The story focuses on this process rather than rushing to introduce the couple. The fact that Tong Hua was able to persuade Tencent's editors to avoid using overly saccharine language shows she still has some influence.
Another issue in the historical drama market is how to balance the screen time of the male and female leads. Since the early episodes focus on the power struggles within the household, the male lead's scenes should only appear at appropriate times.
