I want to start here because it matters: I haven't read the novel.

So this isn't me arguing that the novel version of Jin Qi is wrong, misunderstood, or described incorrectly. I can't make that argument. What I can talk about is the Jin Qi that Against the Current has actually put on my screen.

Drama Jin Qi Gets Judged as Drama Jin Qi

This is where adaptation conversations get complicated. When we know the source material, it's easy to lay the original characterization over the adaptation. We start filling in blanks the drama hasn't filled in. We know what a character eventually thinks in the novel, what drives him there, what he does later, and suddenly all of that becomes "evidence" for what the drama character is doing now.

But an adaptation isn't the original work moved intact into another medium. Characters get rewritten. Motivations shift. Timelines change. Scenes vanish. A drama can keep the skeleton of a relationship while changing how that relationship grows.

So I have to judge drama Jin Qi by drama Jin Qi. (say that 5 times fast  -  drama Jin Qi 😂) And right now, I don't see a man displaying some overwhelming, obsessive love for Lan Xiang.

I see a man who's becoming more and more emotionally invested in her.

There's a difference.

His Behavior Isn't Happening in a Vacuum

One reason I hesitate to call Jin Qi's behavior toward Lan Xiang obsessive is that most of what he does for her matches how the drama has already shown him treating the women he cares about. He's courteous. He's kind. He appeases. He worries. He tries to make things easier when he can.

We've seen that with his mother, his sisters, and his cousins.

That matters to me, because if the same behavior shows up across several of his relationships, I can't automatically read it as romantic obsession just because Lan Xiang is the woman he'll presumably end up loving. Jin Qi is a man who takes care of his people. That's his default setting.

What changes with Lan Xiang isn't that he turns into a different man. It's that his attention changes. He notices her mind. He watches how she thinks. He's interested in how she handles situations, he listens to what she says, and he reacts to her choices. That's been building since he really started noticing her after the Zhao situation. The drama has been laying down intellectual and emotional interest, not dropping a fully formed romance into his lap.

And he still hasn't confessed his feelings to her.

Honestly, I'm not convinced he's fully confessed them to himself.

Scholar Han Is Where Jin Qi Starts Giving Himself Away

This is why I find Jin Qi's reactions around Scholar Han so interesting. I wouldn't even call all of them jealousy yet. They feel like the stage right before it: romantic unease.

Scholar Han makes Jin Qi uncomfortable because he represents a possibility Jin Qi hasn't dealt with. Lan Xiang could choose someone else. Another man could recognize what Jin Qi recognizes in her. Another man could have her time, her conversation, her attention. And most importantly, another man could move before Jin Qi does.

That's where those expressions on his face get good. (Sir, we can see you. You are not subtle.)

Jin Qi doesn't have the standing of a confessed suitor. He hasn't told Lan Xiang he wants her. He hasn't staked any romantic claim, and she certainly doesn't owe him one. So he's stuck watching another man walk beside her with absolutely no right to object.

That's not quite jealousy. It's apprehension. It's uncertainty. It's that uncomfortable wait... someone else could get there before I do feeling.

And I think Jin Qi has been on the verge of real jealousy several times because of it.

So What Is Jin Qi Waiting For?

This is the part I'm watching, because I think one of two things is happening.

Either Jin Qi knows exactly how he feels and is deliberately waiting for something before he acts, or he hasn't let himself fully acknowledge what his interest in her has become.

I can see either one with the drama as it stands. There are moments when he seems very aware of her, followed by moments where he almost looks surprised by his own reaction. Scholar Han, in particular, seems to drag feelings to the surface that Jin Qi could otherwise leave comfortably unnamed.

That's why I don't need the drama to tell me Jin Qi is madly in love. I don't think that's where we are. I think we're watching a man whose interest has become attachment, whose attachment is turning romantic, and who's just starting to realize there may be competition for a woman he hasn't even admitted he wants.

That's a foundation. Whether the drama builds it into something strong enough to hold love is another question entirely.

But I don't think we should take the novel's Jin Qi, lay him over the drama like tracing paper, and criticize the adaptation because the image underneath doesn't line up perfectly.

The novel has its Jin Qi.

Against the Current has to establish its own.

And I'm very interested to see where this Jin Qi goes.
