Make sure you have tissues handy because this first episode is emotionally brutal. Wonderful performances by the various ladies of the Shen household and Li Xi Yuan as the young teenage Shen Jia Lan.

The harsh reality women had to face back then being brought up in a drama without a hint of comedy or deeming it as something to be brushed off. This made me cry. You rarely see dramas depict such reality to such a realistic depth, this was done fantastic. A fate like that is worth than death.

This should have been one of the happiest days of Shen Jia Lan’s life. She was on her way to her engagement party where all the Shen women were gathered to bless her engagement and support the happy couple. On the way they hear the plight of a family too poor to get their daughter medicine and being kicked out on the street. A random act of kindness from mother and daughter provide much needed funds and clothing for another’s daughter in great need. Once there, the Shen women were commenting on how thoughtful a hostess Jia Lan was for both families. While they waited for the Lins, the top two Lin patriarchs were trying to decide what to do about an older recommendation provided to the prior emperor to limit the powers of the princes. Now that leadership changed, that was brought to the current ruler’s attention and he is far from pleased. Jin Qi wants to warn his betrothed that the emperor is out for their families but the head patriarch chooses to have the family cut ties and bribe their way to forgiveness. The Shens are left to deal with the fallout by themselves. The men are to be killed and the women given to a government brothel. The men wrote they left with clear consciences and the Shen women down to the youngest child decide to kill themselves rather than accept their judgment. The family that received their kindness happened to find them and since their daughter had died and was about the same age, they would swap the two daughters so that Jia Lan could live. Jia Lan was not going to accept this until her new family showed her the note written in blood on the blessing she had planned to give to Jin Qi. Her mother wrote……Live. This was a very emotional and heart wrenching introduction to the characters. It is hard to fathom such a harsh switch of circumstance with little warning and no time to mitigate charges and judgment. What did ring true amidst all this tragedy is the love shining through from two different mothers and how one act of kindness and mercy allowed a return gift of kindness and mercy in the face of agonizing circumstances.

Episode starts slow right in midst of a family betrothal and takes a sudden dark turn. Episode places a lot of emphasis on women's plight when emperor condemns the entire family, and how things take a U-turn within moments with women often caught in the crossfire where men are the decision makers. There is also a poignant scene depicting women choosing to commit suicide for preserving honor. Finally a small act of unconditional kindness by FL and her mother leads to her life getting saved

The 1st eps of any drama sets the tone for me staying with it. This one captured me right away! The music is awesome and love how the storyline is played out in the beginning. What makes things hard is waiting on the downloads. Loving the Shen family right away and then just like that...

I really haven't had a drama evoke such emotions from me right on the first episode in a while. I knew this would be great after the way ep 1 went.

A great opening episode, Sad and heavy to set the background of the story. I hope it continues. The young actresses are both talented and did their part well in this 1st episode

Wow only 11 mins into ep 1 and the noble woman fl genuinely asking her parents "what makes someone a slave?" with the curiosity of someone who sincerely wanted to know because she couldn't understand or accept this fact was one of the most profound things I've seen in a cdrama so far...I’ve always wondered about this myself every time I watch a historical drama (being from the 21st century lol), and despite all the reminders i give myself about how historical dramas merely reflect how things were in the past in many societies it would still leave a lingering discomfort seeing young girls being sold off to rich homes and then have to suck up to their "masters"...so to see a show acknowledge this truth from the pov of a privileged character was truly refreshing to see. Ofc, it's also foreshadowing for what happens to the fl in the future so conceptually and story-wise it was a really clever scene that was very well done and impactful.Ofc i've seen nothing at all of this show to give it a proper judgement yet but I feel like both the drama and the fl already deserves all the respect even if she does turn out to be a typical mary sue just for that bit of self awareness at her young age considering her life circumstances and privilege.

This has one of the best yet heartbreaking intro I've seen in my whole life. I bawled my eyes. Shen women have my respect, dying def have been better than being violated over and over again in that state-run brothel. Shame on the emperor and that eras governing system. The cinematography and ost are so good as well. It was simply so good. The acting is top-notch and ofc I love the leads. I love Jialan's newly found family with her didi and mama.

I'm only halfway through Ep. 1 and I already love the cinematography. The way it opens with that bird's-eye view panning across the capital is so beautiful. Even the floral arrangements in the Shen Manor are so bougie. 😂
I also understand why the Shen ladies would rather take their own lives than become state-run prostitutes. I read somewhere that during the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Di massacred an entire family spanning 9–10 generations, and one of the noble women who survived was reportedly forced to service 20 men a day as a quota.
So, similarly, for the Shen ladies, it's basically a choice between two kinds of despair: being violated every day or dying. If I were in their position, I'd probably choose to end my misery too and keep my dignity. Imagine a family friend coming to visit you in the brothel afterward—how humiliating and shameful that would be.

absolutely GORGEOUS settings, the cinematography is PEAK, the acting is THE BEST ive seen in so long, and I genuinely can't praise this first episode more. you might cry, but that's just proof the drama is doing a good job of making the characters' emotions feel real.

It's been so long that i wasn't that invested in a drama since ep 1. I loved it. The characters are well introduced and the story infold so well. It was so sad to see the family take up their lives and all those unfortunate events but i'm sold,

Wow, it all started so dramatically and heavy... Didn't expect that. 🫣Shen Jialan losing all of her family because her fiancé's family let her family take all the blame to save their own skin? Her barely escaping death just by coincidence because of an act of kindness she and her mother had done a few days ago? And now her having to live under the slave girl's name and, I assume, eventually try to make the Lin family pay for what they did? 😯From the premiere alone, I expect this story to be something that's just right up my alley... 🙂↕️And, omg, the little cousin was such a brave and strong girl for being willing to die alongside the women of her family. Her drinking the poison really broke my heart. 😭💔
