but here I want to go deeper into the things that really disappointed me and made this drama end up feeling average

You really did go deeper! I appreciate the way you've given concrete reasons for what you feel went wrong in this drama. And they are some of the things that bother me when I watch dramas that end up disappointing me:

a story that never really nails down what it's about;

a plot that starts to build, yet fizzles out at the end;

decisions that don't make sense because information is either left out or not given when it should have been;

themes that start strong but disappear or become common tropes;

character development that makes no sense and could never realistically happen.

I don't write reviews because I don't have the skills you do for being able to lay out all your thoughts in such a concise and easily understandable manner. Thank you!

yep. im one of those who really rated this really high in the first half, and then along came the other half, it became sooooo frustrating. i was thinking maybe because it was the war plot and my brain was hardwired for the romance-driven plot, so it was hard to shift perspective in the middle of an airing drama yk, lol. but when ep25 came, i just said to myself, uh-oh, this is really bad. so bad. the way they built it up in the first half is so unbelievable that the last half was also unbelievable. i even read the novel because the first couple eps was that goooooood. and then, just like that... it kinda felt a different person writing the last half. hahahaha.

anyway, i still thank Zhu YU for the 20 episode high it gave me. hahaha. no other chinese drama gave me this high in the first episode. with cdramas, it's always after the 4th episode where things get going and interesting, and i dont know why that always is. for now, im waiting for MOLI!!!!

Sadly I've had that experience with too many dramas. It is so frustrating to think you've found a drama that's going to be soooo good only for things to fall apart. Well there's always another drama around the corner to try!

just got done with 40th episode. why is Chang yu everywhere also behaving weird non-chalant int he last episode,, it is liek xie zheng is incapable of having his own and as you pointed it, since he almost went back to the capital. So sad, and the change in characters are inorganic. What a silly end :/

what ridiculousness, some random chick, and almost courtesan becomes queen regent, and a random kid just cause he is bloodline is raised as king. shitty story overlal.

Lol!

I honestly didn't like fan changyu as general.I had no idea the plot was gonna go there. I haven't read the book so maybe the book was better?

The decisions she made for others in the general arc  that she had no right to be making made me mad. I  will say Deng kai kinda carried this drama  for me.

I've seen this criticism towards how FL's character acts before, along with the fact that she became a general with apparently zero training.

How did you handle Deng Kai's character? I've read he's pretty awful.

 diancos:

No. Loved it all

Glad it worked so well for you. It's not often we can find a drama where we love everything.

The what if story would have been better if they did not include the part where Qian Qian & Qi Min see each other & he wants to throw up. The dude said in his next life he don't want to see her to set her free. This was NOT the next life. It was before anything happen if the 17 year massacre did not happen. They could have at least just do where Qi Min see Qian Qian & like her but approach in a normal non crazy way like his life. This way they can truly start over in a healthy way.

Deng khai recently posted about Qi Min in his farewell post to that character. He really studied the charcter really well. In the novel, Qi Min was not this likeable as you don't feel bad when he died. However, thru Deng Khai acting, you see why he did what he did.

I don't find QIan Qian that well, like its not about prettyness, I like when heroines either look different (something different about them) or are pretty if that's it about. Qian Qian doesn't feel she can grow in to queen, her motivations are weird, she tries to make profit, and that's above all, and she's too moral to not want be an empress. But when teh man dies, she wants to be. I like characters and chinese histoircal dramas where characters have a realistic greyness about them, that makes it real.Deng Kai doesn't look or feel kingly with white hair. Black, maybe, yeah.

DENG KHAI purposedly lost over 10lbs to fit the role. Qi Min went thru a lot of truama as a kid. He was surrounded by snakes. He had to give impression that he was sickly so they did not find him a threat as he secretly build his own power force. The actor was able to encompass all of the plus his royalty aura eventhough he sickly. We suppose to see he not fit to be a good king bc of all his ptsd. He is a tragic character from beginning to end. All he ever wanted was to be loved but he never got it. His last shining hope was Qian Qian & she gave him the hope to live but even she keep running away from him. That why at the end, he just wanted to die but if he die it would have to be by the person who saved him at the beginning.

This drama has so many loopholes and illogical storylines i dont even question anymore. Just watch them for their faces. Hahaha..

A gem of a find is DK though. Im not keen on the main couple, dont mind the 2nd cp. Qi Min is not likeable but i do pity him. A lot! I thought the Sui brothers were the only ones who acted really well and shone more than the leads.

As for the alternative ending, i was actually quite relieved they werent going to be together again. They just reminded me too much of the pain and angst in their original relationship.
