Five Stars

This is hands down the best C-drama I’ve seen in 2026! The cast is phenomenal, and the main character absolutely shines—especially with their co-lead, who together have unmatched chemistry. They are easily the best on-screen couple of the year. The director’s work is top-tier, with action scenes that are incredibly well-executed and visually stunning. The cinematography is flawless, making every episode a treat to watch. Each episode keeps getting better, and the action continues to impress. I also appreciate the fast-paced storyline and that they stayed true to the original book with only minimal changes. This drama sets a new standard for the genre!

Lantern Festival Chaos & Drunken Confessions

Episode Thoughts
Episode 14 starts with a very relatable situation — the FL gets a little drunk… okay, very drunk during the New Year celebrations.

In her drunken state she ends up having a sweet and vulnerable moment with the ML. She rambles about how if you want a tiger cub you have to go into the tiger’s den first — her very roundabout way of saying she wants to get closer to him.

It’s funny, adorable, and a little heartbreaking because she already believes he’ll eventually leave.

They almost kiss again… but the moment is ruined when she passes out right before it happens.

It’s pretty obvious by now that the ML has feelings for her too, but he’s still keeping his identity hidden while quietly plotting things in the background.

Meanwhile Manager Yu brings her son over to celebrate New Year with the FL’s family. The kids head out to play in the snow but things take a slightly suspicious turn when a strange woman starts asking too many questions about Manager Yu’s son.

Not long after, the mysterious man — Qi Min — confirms that the boy is actually his son.

Which opens up even more questions.

Manager Yu doesn’t seem to recognise him, and Qi Min makes the ominous comment that they can’t leave anyway, suggesting something much bigger is going on behind the scenes.

He also seems very interested in building a relationship with the ML, possibly as part of his ambition to eventually become Emperor.

And let’s just say… he kills people a little too easily.

The episode then shifts into the Lantern Festival, giving us some lighter and really cute family moments with the FL, ML and little sister enjoying the festival together.

Unfortunately the peaceful moment doesn’t last long.

The FL’s ex-fiancé and his new woman show up and start causing trouble again. The ex still believes the FL has feelings for him which is honestly ridiculous considering the ML is standing right there.

Thankfully the FL shuts him down with a satisfying verbal slap.

And when the situation escalates, she and the ML even give him a small beating — which was extremely satisfying to watch.

Back at court, things continue to move quietly in the background.

General Hu has apparently been thrown into prison by a shady official, though the details are still a little unclear. Meanwhile the Royal Princess and Captain Li (Lord Li) both want absolutely nothing to do with the blind date being forced on them, so they come to an agreement to deal with the situation together.

The episode ends on a more serious note.

The headmaster arrives to warn the ML that the situation at court has worsened and he will soon need to return to his true identity.

The ML agrees.

But first he asks for three more days to stay with the FL and enjoy the festival together.

And somehow that small request makes the looming goodbye feel even more painful.

Favourite Moment
The FL drunkenly trying to confess her feelings to the ML.

Trope Check
• Drunk confession trope
• Almost kiss interruption
• Hidden identity ML
• Festival romance scenes
• Trash ex-fiancé humiliation
• Political intrigue building

Three days left

This episode was quite calm overall and filled with so much love, but I was so angry at everything that interrupted those almost-kisses in the beginning! First, Chang Yu falls asleep, then little Ning runs in, and the next morning when they finally try to talk about it, Yu Qianqian arrives... aaaaah!
I loved Mr. Zhuo's gift to his wife. He is actually very attentive and clearly loves her. They quarrel like a classic old married couple, but it’s so sweet to see that side of them. 🤗

The moment that lady appeared with the gift for Bao’er, I was suspicious right away. I didn’t trust her for a second—and I was right! She turned out to be Qi Min's spy. Also, how did Madam Yu’s maid lose the children again? Her excuse was being distracted for a second, but she wasn’t even near them; she was too busy buying that food with the red balls on a stick!

I’m very confused about Qi Min’s true identity now. Previously, I thought he was Prince Chengde because he had the seal, but this episode Zheng said he’s Sui Yuanhai, the eldest son of Prince Changxin. Either Zheng mixed it up and thought Qi Min is the other brother or I just misunderstood it before! I’m sure it’ll become clearer to me as the plot moves on.

It’s official now... Zheng leaves in three days, right after Chang Yu’s birthday. I am sad already knowing this happiness and peace will end so soon, but I know the plot needs to move on. Honestly, I’ve been ready for the next phase for a couple of episodes already!

The romance this episode!

Such a good episode in terms of the Xie Zheng and Fan Changyu's love story. The cinemetography of the festival was gorgeous and added to the romance of the hair tie scene. The director and the writer really know how to develop the romance and make the audience feel it. Also the plot is moving forward and it's almost time for XZ to leave. I'm dreading that but know it's necessary for the plot. Loving this drama more and more each episode.

Sweet Festivities Before the Storm

Episode 14 felt like a warm bowl of tangyuan on a snowy night, sweet, comforting, and just a little bit sticky with emotions. We open right where the previous episode left off with the almost kiss that wasn’t meant to be. Poor Chang Yu was too drunk to land the moment and poor Xie Zheng had his chance stolen by our tiny chaos gremlin Chang Ning. Romance 0, interruption 1. Still, the mood quickly melts into something wholesome when the gang gathers in the snow. Watching Chang Yu, Chang Ning, Xie Zheng, Bao Er, Qian Qian, and their maid Fu Ling playing together in the winter felt like pure serotonin. The scene radiated warmth despite the freezing setting and it really hit me that Chang Yu and Chang Ning finally have something resembling a family, plus a circle of loyal besties. Of course, this drama never lets us stay in fluffy land for too long because here comes Qi Min creeping in like the villain who skipped the New Year fireworks and went straight to chaos mode. Even though Bao Er tried to bluff his way through by lying about his name and birthdate, Qi Min still dug around and discovered the truth that Bao Er is his son. And just when you think that revelation alone is scary enough, he goes ahead and kills Qian Qian and Bao Er’s maid. My anxiety levels immediately shot up for both Bao Er and Qian Qian, though I have to confess that part of me is also curious about their dynamic. Deng Kai and Kong Xue Er have such striking visuals together and their chemistry is very much giving dangerous but intriguing energy. At the same time I cannot help worrying about Chang Ning because she is Bao Er basically his only friend, so if Qi Min manages to take Bao Er and Qian Qian away, Qi Min might also take Chang Ning to keep Bao Er company. Thankfully the episode wraps us back in sweetness with the Lantern Festival. Chang Yu, Chang Ning, and Xie Zheng wandering through the festive lights was ridiculously cute. My heart melted when Xie Zheng noticed that other kids were being carried by their fathers or brothers and immediately volunteered to carry Chang Ning. Sir, that was smooth and soft at the same time. Then we get the legendary hair tying scene where Xie Zheng gently ties Chang Yu’s hair while Yin Gong Sun captures the moment in a drawing as a gift. Honestly that scene was pure gold, like a perfect screenshot from a romance novel. But even with all the warmth and lantern glow, the vibe feels suspiciously like the calm before the storm. Duty is already knocking on Xie Zheng’s door and he plans to leave in three days, right after Chang Yu’s birthday. Something tells me the drama is about to turn the page and when it does, the peaceful family moments we just enjoyed might become the memories everyone clings to. Fingers crossed but also bracing myself.
