Loved this episode

Gongsun Yin's imagination of Chengyu as a butcher is wild and funny before meeting her. His mind went crazy over several scenarios protraying how his friend the Marquis is suffering. This episode had me laughing so much.

Five Stars

This is the best C-drama I’ve seen in 2026. The entire cast is outstanding, and the main character really stands out—I love their chemistry with the co-lead. In my opinion, they make the perfect on-screen couple! The director did an amazing job, especially with the action scenes, which were shot beautifully. The cinematography is flawless!

Plot thickens

It was so funny to watch Gongsun's reactions to everything the Marquis had agreed to do there—even marriage! His face was priceless when he saw his falcon caged :) And all those scenes with the imaginary Chang Yu... loved it!

We met Yu Qianqian, and it looks like she was the lady in the carriage in Episode 6. I thought it was Song Yan's betrothed and a possible guilty party in Fan Daniu's death, but now that theory is scratched. I also expected that maybe General He was both Xie Zheng's master and Chang Yu's father, but it seems like that theory is also in vain, since the General is still alive somewhere.

We finally get to see how and why Zheng was there in Episode 1, under the snow and almost dead. So he's investigating and was badly injured in a battle, then escaped the white-coated men... and the case is somehow coincidentally linked to the Fan family. Intriguing! We’ll see how it goes.

However, I am a little worried. I have a feeling that during the Spring Festival, something will go down—for example, those guys on the undercover mission could recognize the Marquis if he decides to join Chang Yu in the restaurant. Also, they decided to watch her and the Wei's death warriors closely; even that could lead to someone recognizing our Marquis. I am not sure if that would be for better or worse, because I’m not sure which side they are on. I hope they are allies; they seem nice, but that can be misleading.

And the ending? Okay... let's see what happens next with our lovebirds! :)

Pig Butcher? More Like Heart Butcher

Episode 8 started with a bang and I was already laughing before I even settled in properly. Yin Gong Sun finally hearing updates about Xie Zheng’s life in Xigu Lane was comedy gold. The way his brain immediately ran wild imagining Chang Yu and her life with Xie Zheng had me cackling. After hearing she was a pig butcher he basically pictured some terrifying brute, and the mental image he created was so dramatic that it felt like he was directing his own low budget action movie in his head. So when he finally sees Chang Yu in person and realizes she is actually very pretty, the man looked completely stunned. Mesmerized, even. I felt weirdly proud watching that scene, like yes sir, welcome to reality. Chang Yu is indeed that girl. Things took a softer turn when Chang Yu mistakenly thought the farewell letter from Yi Gong Sun was actually from Xie Zheng. Her sadness thinking that Xie Zheng left without saying goodbye hit harder than expected. Tian Xi Wei really knows how to weaponize those big expressive bobba eyes because once the tears started forming, I almost started tearing up with her. And then right on cue, Xie Zheng appears looking ridiculously handsome like the drama knew we needed visual healing. That whole entrance was pure main character energy. The kitchen scene that followed was honestly adorable because both of them were basically talking in circles. Xie Zheng was subtly trying to investigate Chang Yu’s family situation, her future plans, and whether she actually wanted him to stay, while Chang Yu was also quietly testing the waters to see if he would leave with her and her sister. When Chang Yu mentioned that she would sell her assets and prepare divorce papers for Xie Zheng, you could see the disappointment flicker across his face for a moment. It was interesting considering he previously told Yi Gong Sun that he cannot fall for anyone because anyone he loves would end up in danger, yet hearing the word divorce clearly did not sit well with him. That moment felt like small but meaningful progress for their relationship, the kind that makes you smile because the feelings are slowly peeking through the cracks. We also finally meet Yu Qian Qian, played by Snow Kong, and she looks as pretty as ever. In this drama she is the owner of two large restaurants and already has a child, which I actually find refreshing. She offered Chang Yu a job and seems genuinely friendly, and I am already rooting for a solid friendship between these two women. Meanwhile the two guys from episode 3 also popped up at Yu Qian Qian’s restaurant and noticed Chang Yu, which immediately made my brain go hello potential romantic rivalry. I am not saying I want chaos, but I absolutely want to see Xie Zheng get a little jealous. Just a little. For science. The episode wraps up with Madam Zhao basically telling Chang Yu to consummate the marriage with Xie Zheng, which honestly felt like the drama placing a spicy little teaser on the table. If this episode was the appetizer, then episode 9 might be serving something a bit more flavorful. I will be seated and ready.

Hidden Truths & A New Alliance

First Impression
This episode starts with the ML ready to fight his way through the court for the FL. Thankfully the Headmaster manages to talk some sense into him before he passes out.
🪷
Episode Thoughts
While the ML is unconscious, the Headmaster lets his imagination run wild. Based on what he’s heard about the “butcher’s girl,” he assumes she must be some terrifying woman who bullied the ML into submission.
🪷
So when he finally meets the FL, he’s clearly surprised. She’s nothing like the fierce image he imagined. The bigger shock comes when he accidentally discovers that the two of them are actually married. The man the emperor himself couldn’t force into marriage… is suddenly married. Naturally the Headmaster begins questioning the ML, wondering if he’s fallen for her because he’s definitely not behaving like himself.
🪷
We also get more of the ML’s backstory through battlefield memories. We see the moment a hidden arrow struck him while he was fighting. It’s hinted that his own uncle — the Prime Minister — may want him dead. The situation appears connected to a mysterious case from sixteen years ago that somehow ties back to the FL’s parents.
🪷
The assassins were sent to kill the FL and were searching for something connected to that past. Because of this danger, the safest choice is for them to go into hiding. The FL wants the ML to come with her, but they had previously agreed that he would leave once he had recovered.
🪷
When the FL hears that a carriage has left and it looks like the ML has gone without saying goodbye, she’s devastated. It’s clear she’s developed real feelings for him. Meanwhile the ML hasn’t actually left and is confused by her reaction — he’s completely clueless about why she’s so upset. In the end, he agrees to go with her for now.
🪷
As the FL plans to close her shop until things are safe again, she unexpectedly receives an offer she can’t refuse. Manager Yu from a restaurant wants to see her.
🪷
The surprise? Manager Yu is actually a woman — the same mysterious person we saw earlier in the carriage. She turns out to be sharp, business-savvy, and someone who clearly knows how to handle herself.
🪷
Their interaction is surprisingly sweet. The FL is honest and straightforward, and after learning that Manager Yu was respected by Mr. Li — who had been close to the FL’s father — she offers to share her family’s secret recipe.
🪷
Some people might think the FL is naive, but the truth is she simply believes in repaying kindness tenfold.
🪷
Character Notes
🪷
Female Lead
Direct, sincere, and incredibly loyal. She may seem simple, but she has a strong moral compass and repays kindness generously.
🪷
Male Lead
Still slowly falling for the FL, even if he doesn’t fully realise it yet. His past continues to reveal dangerous family politics tied to him.
🪷
Headmaster of Luyuan Academy
Provides some comedic relief this episode with his completely incorrect assumptions about the FL.
🪷
Manager Yu
A fascinating new character. Smart, confident, and likely to become an important ally.
🪷
Final Thoughts
Episode 8 balances humour, mystery, and character development really well. The hints about the sixteen-year-old case tied to the FL’s parents suggest the larger story is just beginning to unfold.
🪷
Favourite Moment
The Headmaster discovering the ML is married and questioning everything he thought he knew.
🪷

• Hidden identity
• Political conspiracy
• Marriage confusion
