Laid the ground work only to let you down
First let me say that I think if this this show had maybe another 10 episodes it wouldve been one of my favorite dramas. The leads were gorgeous, the cinematography was stunning, the overalk mystery/intrigue surrounding what happened in the past was laid out so well… but the ending was so unsatisfying.
The two leads eventually getting together was minimal. After many amazing action scenes with the FL, she wasnt even that big of a part of the final fight, nor did that fight FEEL intense. It felt subpar from the other battles shown in the show.
The resolution of what happened in the past was a really good story, but because it was only shown through flashbacks with no scenes showing the intense struggle of the leads to accept the injustices that happened, it felt emotionally disconnected.
Still a good watch, and all the cast did an amazing job, but I wish the plot had been better condensed in the 40 episodes.

Not My Taste, But Still Worth Noting
This drama is likely best suited for viewers who enjoy wholesome relationships—especially those who appreciate gentle, well-adjusted couples and the natural progression of their romance. That’s not really my preference. I tend to gravitate toward more complex, “spicier” dynamics—dysfunctional couples who struggle with their flaws but ultimately carve out some version of normalcy or a hard-earned, imperfect happiness together, like in Story of Kunning Palace and My Journey to You. Both feature strong female leads and darker, power-driven dynamics, with characters who are far from perfect yet grow within their own flawed frameworks. That said, I did genuinely enjoy several of the subplots.
The Butcher Gang storyline was particularly engaging, and I appreciated the depth given to certain morally complex characters. They felt like both victims and unintentional perpetrators—pushed into making difficult decisions by the manipulations of those above them. The layered conspiracies and intricate palace machinations were also a highlight.
I was especially drawn to the portrayal of the Sui brothers. Their arc—shaped by trauma, torture, and a fractured perception of the world—added a compelling psychological dimension as they grappled with revenge and tried to make sense of their reality.
Overall, this wasn’t really my kind of drama, and I think I would have enjoyed it more in clips rather than watching it all the way through. There were several standout scenes that I truly enjoyed, and every performer delivered a strong—if not exceptional—performance. That said, many viewers loved it, and I’ve noticed that those who did often enjoy other dramas that don’t quite align with my tastes. So ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.

it knew exactly what it wanted to be… until it didn’t
just finished Pursuit of Jade and… yeah i have feelings about this one. this was ONE of the MOST anticipated dramas of 2026 for me… i waited for it wholeheartedly, so yeah, it kinda hurts to say i ended up a little disappointed halfway through...ngl the first half?? kinda insane (in a good way). it was intense, gripping, and had me hooked right away. the whole setup with fan changyu saving this half-dead man in the snow who turns out to be the infamous wu’an marquis xie zheng?? yeah that ate. plus the contract marriage trope?? i was seated. but then… idk what happened after like ep 20. the story lowkey lost the plot. too many filler scenes, too many side stories, and suddenly the main characters don’t feel like the main focus anymore. it’s giving “we had a plan but forgot halfway”.
fan changyu tho?? she’s THAT girl. small, cute, looks soft but can literally fight like a general?? love that for her. her character development was actually solid, especially with her background and everything. she carried. xie zheng on the other hand… i feel bad saying this but he got nerfed so hard. like sir you’re THE marquis wu’an?? where is the power?? the aura?? even without reading the novel, you can tell we didn’t get his full potential. his revenge arc could’ve been so much deeper but it just… didn’t hit. also can we talk about his communication skills… or lack of it. like how many misunderstandings do we need?? bro just TALK. it got draggy real fast. and the way he just let li wenkan hang around changyu like that?? hello??? where is the jealousy, the urgency, the “stay away from my wife” energy pls.
romance wise… i wanted more. like way more. xie zheng barely expresses his feelings, and changyu too doesn’t really show how deeply she loves him. so their relationship ended up feeling kinda… flat? which is sad bc the potential was RIGHT THERE. don’t even get me started on the second couple. no hate to the actors, they did their job, but the storyline?? messy. and the way the drama kinda romanticized a toxic relationship… yeah that didn’t sit right with me at all. i skipped a lot of their scenes tbh.
another issue is the side characters. they gave them a lot of screen time and depth, which CAN be good, but here it just felt like too much. like why are we spending so much time on them when the main story is suffering… BUT i have to give credit where it’s due — zhang ling he and tian xi wei ATE. like actually ATE. their acting was so good and they carried the drama from the beginning. the emotions?? delivered. the chemistry?? HELLO??? they were on fireeee! you can really feel how much effort they put into their roles. which makes it even more frustrating when the writing starts falling apart later… it really feels like the drama got snatched mid-air.
also we can’t ignore the mess behind the scenes. the production had multiple issues — controversies, poor promotion (like why did they sideline the main cp??), even safety concerns during filming. and the worst part?? the last 10 episodes got leaked online. like that’s actually so unfair to both the cast and the audience. it ruined the experience and hype completely.
production wise, cinematography and bgm were nice, no complaints there. but the writing in the second half… yeah no. especially knowing it’s from the same writer as love like the galaxy?? my expectations were sky high, maybe that’s on me 🤡overall, this had so much potential. strong start, great cast, interesting premise… but fumbled in the second half. still watchable, still frustrating.
story wise, it’s a solid 7/10… but i’m giving it 8/10 simply because zhang ling he and tian xi wei exist and looked THAT good on my screen.

And can we talk about the female lead?! She’s incredible strong, and so interesting to watch. Easily one of the best characters I’ve seen in a while.
The cast overall? PURE FIRE. Every actor delivers, and the chemistry is soooo top like you can feel it in every scene. Absolutely unmatched.

Started to lose interest
How can you start out liking a drama then later as the drama keeps going the storyline loses itself and becomes a chore?Kept seeing "best drama of the year" and this one didn't make that list for me. I took some points off in my rating.
The ml and fl storyline started to get bland to me and dragged. I started looking forward to watching side characters scenes instead. Sometimes the side characters barely get episodes and when they do all my attention is there.
Stayed watching for Qi Min and his brother I know their scenes are crazy, but their acting was good.
The main storyline got too boring when ML didn't tell
FL his real name. & when FL kept pushing ML away.
When they finally got together I didn't care and skipped them completely.
I do believe without introducing Qi Min storyline in the drama I probably would've dropped it awhile ago if he wasn't in here, but thanks to Deng Kai acting saving my attention span I stayed.
Wish they showed more of Qian Qian character and how did she get there.
Regardless, I hope they get Deng and Snow together for their own drama being mains in the future.

“It Had Everything… Until the End”
The drama started off incredibly strong, but unfortunately it lost some of its momentum towards the end. Overall, there were so many aspects of the series that I genuinely loved—the characters were compelling, the acting performance was convincing, the storyline had a lot of promise, the cinematography was beautiful, and the chemistry between the leads was undeniable. However, despite these strengths, the drama still had noticeable flaws or it's lacking in some aspects, particularly in how the plot developed as the story moved forward. The arc set in Lin’an was truly exceptional. The storytelling during that period felt engaging, emotionally layered, and well-paced. It was the point where the drama shined the most for me. However, once the story transitioned into the war camp setting, the narrative started to feel less grounded. Some events and character decisions came across as impulsive or unrealistic, which made certain moments harder to fully believe in or emotionally invest in.
One aspect that frustrated me was how the misunderstandings between the lead characters escalated. Instead of resolving issues through proper communication, their choices often made the situation spiral further out of control. This was particularly noticeable with Changyu. While I appreciate that she is written as a strong and independent character, I felt that she made too many critical decisions entirely on her own. Strength and independence are admirable traits, but in the context of warfare and strategy, acting purely on impulse without considering the larger consequences felt a bit out of place.
By the time the drama reached its finale, I couldn’t help but feel somewhat unsatisfied. The ending left me thinking, “Was that really it?” I expected more closure and especially more scenes between Xie Zheng and Changyu. Their relationship was such a central part of the story that it felt disappointing not to see it explored more deeply in the final scenes/parts of the drama.
While I do love the romantic scenes between Xie Zheng and Changyu but not gonna lie that Yu Qian Qian and Qi Min (Sui Yuan Huai) felt surprisingly more passionate and intense. Their kiss scenes, in particular, had a certain spontaneity and emotional depth that made them particularly captivating.
Despite these criticisms, I still think the drama is quite good overall and, in my opinion, it clearly managed to capture the very essence or the concept of what LOFTG was striving to show. Tian Xi Wei’s portrayal of Fan Changyu was one of the highlights of the series. She truly embodied the character so well that it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Changyu as convincingly. Her performance added so much depth and authenticity to the role, and she absolutely delivered.

Best historical c drama in last decade
The first historical c drama I was hooked onto was Eternal Love and this is the first since then that can rival / surpass it. I love the concept of a strong female lead and the cinematography is also awesome. I’ve never considered ZLH as drool worthy till this drama. I’ve rewatched the episodes many times as the refresh is waaay too slow in my opinion. Was this review helpful to you?
Leaves me breathless
The characters are amazing, so much so that even though the tough bad guys are exceptionally bad, you hope for a miraculous twist to make them heroes. But the main characters are perfection. I binged 33 episodes in one day and now I am braless waiting for the remaining to be released. I was mesmerised by the characters, I cried, laughed and fell in love with them. This is a must watch show. Was this review helpful to you?
Started strong but lost interest gradually
Pursuit of Jade starts on a strong note, with beautiful landscape settings, strong FL who makes her living for herself and her little sister by butchering pigs, as her parents pass away, despite the criticisms she face from her fellow villagers. She comes across ML who is saved by her when she finds him unconscious in the snow, which is the main backdrop of the Lin'an town.
The first few episodes were very interesting with a little bit revelation of the ML backdrop as Marquis Wu'an, the FL facing house issues from her relatives, her constant worries regarding money and her sister, while the ML trying to relay and receive information through the falcon.
There were few interesting moments where ML stands up for FL in various situations in the village as he agrees to become her "matrilocal husband".
Now this is where exactly I started losing interest, as it has taken ages for Xie Zheng, ML, to come out of the village and even disgusting is that, almost till ep 26,he kept on lying about his identity to her and also had made his men and army to fabricate many lies. I didn't understand any logic in this cat and mouse game of Zheng, since he loves her so much, why can't he reveal his identity in the later episodes?
Also, I gradually lost interest in the romantic conversations of the main leads and started skipping them to a point, where I dont know what's going on between them, either arguing, fighting, or trying to sort out?
Another major problem for me is Zheng, the mighty Marquis, even after knowing that someone wanted to kill him and somebody is trying to kill Fan Changyu, did not put even a single step forward in investigating these matters. Here and there we find him planning some strategies for war, but at the end he is not the one who fights or kills but Fan Changyu, a "self-made overnight heroine".
And coming to Fan Changyu, initially I found her quite capable, strong, righteous, amd trying to make a living, but once she steps out of the village, she is " the great female warrior, who without any training, can kill generals, who fought hard battles woth just 2 strikes".For me, she really turned into a ridiculous character and lost complete interest in her.She is capable of everything, from bringing rice to meat, to killing rebels and traitors, without a single scratch on her or years of training!!!
The only storyline that made me watch this far is Qi Min and Yu Qianqian.I wanted to see how their story comes to an end along with their son. Simply liked Deng Kai's acting. For me, he and his brother are the only saving grace.
Also, the Sui brothers were more interesting than the main leads. And as for the main villain, nothing serious has really been shown, so I dont know.
On a final note, I felt it a Wasted Opportunity, which lost its potential as it progressed.

Perfect! Hands down! the best C-drama I’ve seen in 2026
This is hands down the best C-drama I’ve seen in 2026! The cast is phenomenal, and the main character absolutely shines—especially with their co-lead, who together have unmatched chemistry. They are easily the best on-screen couple of the year. The director’s work is top-tier, with action scenes that are incredibly well-executed and visually stunning. The cinematography is flawless, making every episode a treat to watch. Each episode keeps getting better, and the action continues to impress. I also appreciate the fast-paced storyline. This drama sets a new standard for the genre! Was this review helpful to you?
Good story + horrible directing = mediocre series
I honestly don't understand what most reviewers are praising the series for. I haven't read the book, but from what I see the story is good and since it's the only thing that is good, the book must have been great.Acting is subpar at best. Overwhelming majority of actors in this drama don't know how actual people behave, cry or laugh, expressions are wooden. Even looking at a wall would have been a more emotional experience. Don't get me wrong, some actors in this drama do know how to act, but they are clearly in the minority. This was my first c-drama and if I hadn't watched Joy of Life series right after, I would have concluded Chinese dramas are just not worth the time.
The decorations and CG look as fake as my old neighbor eyelashes, they could have just skipped them altogether, but this at least can be explained by low budget. Although some parts of it looked cringey, then don't really detract from the show.
Direction. AWFUL. He allowed lousy acting pass. Didn't manage pacing well. Introduced characters that have zero influence on the story and serve no purpose whatsoever. Director should probably look for another job.

Already the best pairing of the year, and it's March
I'll remember this drama for its first 20 episodes, which were genuinely thrilling. After the story moved to the battlefield and the capital, though, it started to lose direction. To be fair, the director did the best he could, especially since I've heard the novel which the drama is based on isn't that good.I probably could've rated it a 9 based on the pairing alone. Zhang Linghe has never looked better, and this is my first drama with Tian Xiwei, who I came to like a lot. The chemistry was excellent, and I'd blush, laugh, and even get emotional at the same time when she was a butcher and thought he was a deserted soldier, but it took real effort to finish because I was so bored by the end, so I'll settle on a 7.5.
