Super Strong First Half but Disappointing Second half

I don't know how to write a very serious review analyzing plot and pacing and I'm probably just gonna say a lot of what everyone else has been saying but I still wanted to write one. I didn't quite finish this drama because Netflix is a bit slow but I'm already disappointed and I feel like the last half of the drama has really fallen off compared to the first.
Initially, I thought this was gonna be the greatest drama I have ever watched. I went in with high expectations and I wasn't disappointed. The beginning half in the village was the most magical experience I've ever had with a C-drama. Just by watching short clips of the wedding scene and the scene where Changyu thought Xie Zheng had left, I knew this drama was worth getting a Netflix subscription for.

The visuals were stunning. In historical dramas, we mostly get the palace life because that life is supposedly more interesting and more pleasing to the eye. However, this drama did a great job at making the village life super interesting and visually appealing. The production crew? truly demonstrates that you don't need fancy clothes and jewelry in order to live a happy, meaningful life. The camera work in the village was excellent and truly gorgeous. I wouldn't say the excellent visuals disappeared after the war began, but the visuals in the later episodes aren't as appealing as they were in the village.
The chemistry between the main leads was so incredibly strong in the village arc I was literally screaming whenever they had cute moments. I've never done this ever for any couple and when I see other people discuss how they do this for other couples, I just never understood how anyone could have such a strong reaction to good chemistry until this drama. The tangerine candy kiss is one of the most romantic first kiss scenes I have ever seen in a drama and was the scene that got me to start watching the drama. However after the whole thing where they separated, their chemistry was no longer the same. For me, they took a bit too long to truly get back together with Xie Zheng revealing his identity to Changyu and Changyu finally getting used to the fact that she's dating the Marquis of Wu'an. After they got back together, there just wasn't that spark anymore. They were still cute though.
But one of the things that this drama did well in was that I was never bored watching it. Usually when watching dramas, I feel a strong urge to skip certain scenes or have to force myself to sit through them. But it wasn't the case for this one, I was thoroughly entertained even in the village life where not that much was happening. In fact, the village life was more interesting than when they went to war. They also had a lot of interesting characters that I actually grew to care about such as Yu Qianqian and her son Bao'er, Sui Yuanqing, the gossiping grandma, and her gang of men. But at around episode 27, this drama took a bit of a toll on my mental health because I was realizing how badly this drama was going to mess everything up. It was so bad that I became angry every time I thought about it, but eventually I got over it. I think I became too attached to the drama. First they had Changyu kill that one general with 2 blows and received an internal injury. I was questioning how because she has no battle experience but I just reasoned that she had trained with her father in martial arts her whole life and she has been doing missions in freeing kids for months which probably allowed her to improve her skills. However, it would've been more believable if Changyu came out of it with a lot more serious injuries. But this drama affected my mental health when she killed Prince Changxin and only received some deep scratches. That's when I realized that the quality of this drama has truly decreased because they set up Prince Changxin to be this main villain in the show but he ended up looking like a minor problem. It also would've made more sense for Marquis Wu'an kill him instead because he was literally there and is canonically a better fighter than Changyu with more battle experience. Instead the drama had him going after Sui Yuanqing once again which is lame because we have already seen them fight before and Xie Zheng easily beat him. Sui Yuanqing should've been dead or at least a hostage there if Marquis Wu'an wasn't just sitting there and mocking him, giving an enemy troop enough time to come and grab him. Last time they were super quick to put spears around him but I wonder what happened this time. I also wish we got to see more of the full fighting potential of Marquis Wu'an instead of a ton of screentime for an abusive relationship. The only real fight scenes we got of him were when he was injured and when he won super easily against Sui Yuanqing. But after this, there's something wrong that I can't quite put my finger on. I genuinely don't know why I care less about the story now. It's probably because they tried to fit too much into such a small number of episodes but I can't find a way to directly link it to my growing apathy for the show.
As for the politics? I don't know. Honestly I never pay attention the political aspect of dramas but I did this time and I still don't understand the whole picture. I saw a lot of people saying that the politics of this drama are confusing so it might not just be a me problem.
The acting? I genuinely can't tell good acting from bad acting but I believe that Tian XiWei is a good actress. As for Zhang Linghe, his acting did the job. In the last few episodes I watched, I wasn't as moved by the acting as I was before.
I loved the music paired with the village scenes because it brought the village to life and it made the scenes between Changyu and Xie Zheng incredibly romantic and moving. The music is so good that sometimes it started playing in my head whenever I was outside experiencing life. My favorite music that played is probably the time where Changyu though Xie Zheng left her but came back and when they were talking beside the fireplace with fish.
I haven't finished this drama and I don't think I'm going to drop it entirely yet but I may just end up skipping through parts in order to get to the ones I care about because unfortunately I don't care anymore.
If I were to ever rewatch this drama, I would only rewatch the village arc.

A familiar formula done to an exceptional standard . . . watch for the genius first 1/3 at least

Really here to just voice I'd love a Bao Er and Fan Chang Ning spin-off!

The first 1/3 of this drama is pure genius. Our great and fearsome general is renamed Yan Zheng and must hide out as a refugee in an out of the way village with a pig butcher only to fall in love. Not only does this ridiculous premise work it works extremely well. The gender role reversal leaves a lot of laughs as well as Yan Zheng acting secretly protective lends itself to a lot of romance. There's multiple moments in the first 1/3 I'd like to rewatch.

As with most c-dramas, it marches forward for the next 2/3s using tried and true plots of fighting corruption and returning righteousness for the normal people through military force and ruthlesness. Things get a bit repetitive, but it's quite fast paced and beautifully shot and I didn't really mind. I was able to watch through to the end.

If you like the idea of revenge, of your bullies quaking in their boots in front of you, with a really strong romance through the first 1/2 - this is a great watch.

Fate and Destiny

I fell in love with this show. It was very captivating and kept me interested. Also, it did not hurt that the ML was Zhang Ling He. I would watch anything he is a part of. This show had everything in it - romance, comedy, action, royal scheming, political intrigue, found family, revenge, etc. You name it, this show literally has it.

The cast did an amazing job with their characters. I really loved the entire premise of the show, and the subplots were also engaging. It was definitely not a boring show. I especially enjoyed the first half/part of the show. These were episodes I couldn't get enough of. I loved Changyu and Xie Heng's life in Lin'an. As the story progressed, it did not hold my attention as much. It felt more and more like it was just unneccessarily being dragged on. It could have been shorter than 40 episodes and it would have probably been a better pacing and ending. Not to say the ending was not good. It was satisfactory but just a little underwhelming compared to how good it started. Not to take away from how great this show was, it really took a lot of turns to get through the end.

Still, I loved this show. Beautiful cast, good acting, amazing cinematography, and a well-told story. Highly recommend!!!

A drama that stays with you long after it ends

The story is about Fan Chang Yu, a young woman who works as a butcher to survive, and Xie Zheng, a nobleman with a painful past. She finds him half dead in the snow and brings him home. From that one moment, everything changes for both of them. What I loved most is how naturally their love grows. It never feels forced. You watch this quiet, guarded man slowly open up.

The early episodes set in Lin'an are honestly some of the best drama episodes I have ever seen. Everything feels alive there. The town, the people, the small daily moments between the leads. I could have watched an entire drama just set in that town and been happy.

Tian Xiwei as Chang Yu is a joy to watch. She is strong, warm, funny, and real. You root for her from minute one. Zhang Linghe brings a quiet intensity to Xie Zheng that is hard to explain but impossible to ignore. His eyes say everything his character struggles to put into words. Together they have the kind of chemistry that makes you forget you are watching actors.

The supporting cast deserves just as much love. From the Lin'an folks to little Changning and Bao'er, everyone brings something special. And the villains (especially Sui Yuan Qing and Sui Yuan Huai) are so well written and acted that you almost cannot help but be fascinated by them even when you hate what they are doing.

The production is gorgeous from start to finish. Beautiful costumes, stunning scenery, and fight scenes that actually feel exciting and emotional at the same time. The music is something else entirely, it hits you right in the heart at exactly the right moments

A solid 10 out of 10. This drama reminded me why I love this genre so much.

Cinematography and Chemistry is Top-Notch

The main point of this drama is the chemistry between the leads and the cinematography.

Although beware, I think they used AI on some parts. I agree to everyone saying this is ZLH's best look ever, you will really have a moment of just admiring his face while watching especially with the camera angles, it was beautifully done.

Lin'an arc was the best, and then just like any other cdrama out there, the politics plot just kept on coming and there's so much going on.

I love the alternate universe ending so much!!! Although there were no second wedding, featuring an alternative ending was also a good choice especially since they were able to show the nephew-uncle duo.

Favorite drama so far for 2026

This drama was one I had been waiting for a long time. I was excited to see both main leads acting together, and even more excited that it was directed by a director I love. His most popular recent work that everyone knows is Blossom, but it was Familiar Stranger that first got me hooked on his work. I hope he continues to make amazing dramas like this—I really love the visual storytelling and the way everything is directed.

Another behind-the-scenes talent I would like to mention is the screenwriter. I just found out that she wrote many series I highly recommend and love, The Rise of the Phoenixes being one of them! She also has other notable titles like Love Like the Galaxy and Guardian of Beauty and Corner Diary.

Probably the one thing that hooked me from the beginning and kept me watching was Chang Yu’s character. She was brave, loyal, and a strong, fearless, and loving character. Zhang Linghe’s character was a bonus—I loved how ruthless he was and how he didn’t care about the emperor, especially when he declined the princess’s marriage proposal and even cut off the messenger’s ear.

I plan to read the book, as I’ve been told the series follows it quite closely and includes more details that viewers might enjoy.

Another thing I loved about this series is the side characters. I have to admit, before watching, the second couple showed up a lot on my feed, and I can see why. They are toxic, but I can’t help but love and pity Qi Min’s character. Yu Qianqian was another actress I grew to love, and I was excited to see her here as a second lead.

Other cast members I look forward to include Lin Muran and Li Qing. I couldn’t help but cheer and giggle every time they appeared on screen.

My only downside to this drama was the confusing mystery of what actually happened in the past. I’m still a bit fuzzy on the details, so I plan to go back and rewatch, as a lot happened and there were many details and characters I didn’t fully catch the first time.

Pursuit of Jade is a drama I highly recommend for 2026. So far, it’s my favorite and currently in first place. I’m giving it a 9/10, with one point deducted for the confusing mystery in the past.

almost dropped it at episode 14 but im glad i continued..

the cast is incredibly attractive and easy on the eyes, and the director does a great job highlighting their charm.

ngl, it slows down a bit around episode 14—it feels like not much is happening. but things pick up again around episodes 17–18, and it gets much better from there. i ended up binging the rest. i was initially looking forward to the part where they leave the village, but after reading the top review, i got worried the story would go downhill and stopped watching. i’m really glad i gave it another chance, though, because it only got better. i enjoyed the linan arc, but the palace politics and battle scenes were definitely necessary. although i agree with what the top review said about the FL having better fight scenes and ML needing more depth and impact to really show why he deserves the title of marquis.

toward the end, around episode 35, i was worried about how they would wrap up all the storylines, but it concluded in a satisfying way without feeling tooo rushed. i even cried like a baby over the two main antagonists, which honestly says a lot about how good the show is. the ost is great too im currently listening to the album I LOVE "rising storm" ITS SOOOO FUCKING GOOD… i want more episodes, but unfortunately, this is the end.

A visually exquisite drama with a heart-stealing lead couple.

Important clarification: I haven't read the novel, so my opinion is based solely on what the drama offers. And what it offers, in general, I quite enjoyed.

"Pursuit for Jade" is, above all, a feast for the senses. From the very first episode, the photography, cinematography, set design, and costumes transport you completely to ancient China with impeccable quality. Every scene is meticulously crafted, every garment seems lifted from a painting, and the visual direction imbues each shot with weight and beauty. It's one of those dramas that can be enjoyed even with the sound off, simply for its aesthetic appeal.

It's not the first time I've seen a work by Tian Xi Wei or Zhang Ling He, but seeing them together has been a real treat. Their chemistry is palpable and, at least from my perspective, stands out as one of the drama's strongest points. They manage to build a dynamic that balances romantic tension, humor, and emotional vulnerability with a naturalness that makes you invested in their relationship from the very beginning.

That said, there are details I would have liked to see explored in more depth: the discovery of his identity, when she discovers he is the Marquis, the conflict is resolved too quickly. I would have appreciated more time for her anger to fester, for her not to forgive him so easily. A well-managed grudge would have created more emotional tension and made the reconciliation more cathartic.

The fear of the Marquis: throughout the series, we are told that everyone fears him, but there are no scenes that truly show why. His reputation is told more than shown, and this somewhat dilutes the impact of his character at certain moments. And the political plot: there are moments, especially when political and strategic matters are discussed, where you have to pay close attention to avoid losing track. It's not that it's poorly developed, but it demands a level of concentration that contrasts with the lighter tone of other moments. It's not a flaw in itself, but it might throw off those looking for a more relaxed viewing experience.Despite these minor issues, the drama skillfully balances its different registers: there are genuine laughs, heart-melting romantic moments, poignant scenes of sadness that tug at your heartstrings, and twists of betrayal that maintain interest. This variety prevents the story from becoming monotonous and keeps the viewer hooked.

However, I felt the ending was a bit weak compared to the rest of the journey. It's not bad, but perhaps it's resolved more hastily than the story built up to that point deserved. Even so, at least we got a happy ending for the protagonists, which is no small feat in this genre.

Special mention for Li Huaian, one of my favorite characters. I was glad that he also got closure and that the drama didn't leave him forgotten. The secondary characters, in general, are well-developed, and all the actors are gorgeous and deliver top-notch performances, which contributes to the overall feeling of solidity and care (although I would have liked to see what happened to the princess and the strategist).

It's a drama that's enjoyed with both the eyes and the heart. The production is top-notch, the lead actors have captivating chemistry, and its ability to blend genres makes it highly entertaining. It suffers from some plot developments that could have been explored further and an ending that feels somewhat rushed, but overall it's a very satisfying experience. Ideal for those looking for a historical drama with romance, charismatic characters, and impeccable technical execution.

When Returning Is the Real Ending ⚠️Spoiler⚠️

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Between the Lines
igiam’s reflections on drama, character and hidden meaning
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Some stories end with victory. Others end with peace.
But this one… ends with a choice.

What moved me the most wasn’t the justice, nor the resolution of truths.
It was the moment she returned.

Not because she had to… but because she remembered.

She remembered the people who raised her, who loved her, who would have been left alone if she never came back.

And that, to me, was the most powerful act in the entire story.

Because love is not always about staying.
Every so often, it is about going back.

The drama gives us everything we expect — closure, consequences, and emotional resolution.

However then it does something more subtle, something deeper.

● It shows us a different life.
● A quieter one.
● A life untouched by pain, where no one was lost, and everything remained in its place.

Not to confuse us — but to make us feel what was sacrificed along the way.

And maybe that’s why this story stays with you.

Not because of what happened… but because of what could have been.

In the end, they didn’t choose the easiest life. They decided the one where no one would be left behind.

And without even thinking…

I knew I would have done the same.

Absolute cinema

The story is so beautiful and magical. All the characters have complexity and they feel very human, so it's easy to get emotionally involved with their struggles.
We have two powerful main characters and their bond is not rushed nor unusual, on the contrary, it feels real, deep and beautiful.
The storyline is not perfect and it can be repetitive at some points but it's absolutely worth it.

I’m in love

This drama got me on a chokehold. It was honestly THE BEST DRAMA EVER! I thought I wouldn’t be able to find another badass female lead like Ming Yi from Love in the Clouds, but here we are. Just finished it today, 03/30/2026. I am so sad. My heart is broken now that this was over. How do I move on, fam? *Sobs* I felt this way when I watched Love in the Clouds because I had to wait for new episodes to air on Netflix. Anyway, this is a story about a young girl named Fan Changyu from Lin’an who comes from a family of pig butchers. She lives with her little sister Fan Changning, who is so cute and just as smart as her. I love how she quotes “In this life, be a good pig; in the next life, be a good person” before she slaughters the pig. One day, she discovers an injured man buried in the snow. Her parents just passed away so she becomes the breadwinner. A lot of her neighbors talk sh-t behind her back, but she doesn’t back down. She’ll fight for it as long as she is right. The man she saved was obviously a high ranking nobleman. He tells Changyu his name: Yan Zheng. It’s really funny how in most of these stories they try to hide behind a new identity, but still keep a part of their name. Brilliant idea, if you ask me. His real name is Xie Zheng, and he’s the Marquis of Wu’an. He lies low in Lin’an but secretly communicates with his men via a gyrfalcon. Yan Zheng was really nice when he offered to marry her as a matrilocal husband in order to help Changyu save her house, or else her greedy uncle and aunt will get it. I love how they talk to each other. You know they were slowly falling for each other every day that they were together. Changyu always tells him, “I’ll slaughter pigs to support you”, because she’s the head of the household and she thinks that Yan Zheng is a weak man. Then we see how Changyu fights when there were assassins that raided their home. How did she learn how to fight like that? Turns out, her father taught her martial arts since he ran an escort service. But along the way, there were so many things that didn’t add up. Some people who watched this were confused and didn’t like the ending. I refused to watch the leaked episodes because those have trashy translations. Everything was cleared up in episodes 38-39. Everything was clear to me. I did not skip the scenes, especially the political ones, and that helped me understand what was going on. I love how the second male lead, Li Huai An, the grandson of was such a gentleman. He knew his boundaries very well. Even up until the end, he made a smart choice. I love the scene where she’s in her armor on the horse and they’re on the street, and he just watches her from the window. I thought that was pretty sweet. When Xie Zheng was on his horse, she had a scene where she was looking out the window, too. I love it! At the palace, the way that puppet emperor wanted her when he asked if she was married. Na-uh. You wanna lose your head? If Marquis was there, oh boy, he’d be pissed. Your eunuch already lost his ear. Maybe you’ll end up losing your head. And when they met in secret in one of the alleys. The way he opened his arms and ran to him. Sweet kisses!! I’m melting!! The kisses were great, too. That bath tub scene that looked like they were Yin and Yang from above? Perfect. Anyways I just love everything about this drama. It holds a special place in my heart. The music, the cinematography, the costumes, the fight scenes, the characters… believe it or not, I even cried for the villains. To be honest, I cried at Qi Min’s demise. But he deserved it because he slaughtered a lot of people. He couldn’t even love his child, Bao’er. *chef’s kiss* The director and the whole crew were amazing. Thank you for bringing Zhu Yu to life. I swear, this drama had so many funny reels. I love how netizens were making videos and comments online saying they wanted to find their own Marquis one day in the snow. If not snow, maybe in the mud. Especially when he came through the gate in his armor and his lingzi headpiece (2 pheasant feathers that military commanders wear in ancient China to show glory and courage). Videos of cats and dogs wearing lingzi headpieces littered my timeline, which was really cute. There was also a video of a squid in a hotpot where they cut off most of the tentacles and left two, then the second clip was Marquis Wu’an, saying it was a glow up. I laughed so hard at that. We don’t get to see another wedding and their two kids, but it’s okay. As long as one of them didn’t end up dying, I’m all good. There was a “What if” special scene at the end of episode 40.

Stayed to watch the capital palace intrigue towards the end (epi 34-40)

The chemistry between the leads was incredible and they made you believe they were truly in love with each other early on. And while I loved the acting of the FL which was solid and consistently showing her growth throughout, I was let down by the acting of the ML as I had expected the ML to be edgier and colder from the start (like Murong Jinghe from KMLM), and for there to be more of a change in his personality as he softened and fell in love with Chang Yu. I just didn't see it as he was such a loveable guy from the start!

I especially loved the actors who played the puppet emperor and Xie Zheng's cunning uncle, Wei Yan. They stole the show in the last 10 episodes and I couldn't keep my eyes off their riveting, sympathetic performances of characters we should be despising for the acts they have committed. They all deserve acting awards.

The capital arc and court palace intrigue felt more grounded in reality and was told from multiple perspectives, Rashomon style. (The story was apparently based on a real historical female general in China, although I don't know how much of the palace intrigues were real). I won't spoil it but the last 10 episodes are like a murder mystery with the leads trying to figure out what happened to their parents and why and holding the culprits to account,

Storywise, while it was better than you're typical historical period piece, I felt there were certain plot points that were missed or not elaborated upon (e.g., when he finds out the FL is the daughter of his family's sworn enemy, Wei QiLin) that I wish he struggled more with before deciding to get together with the FL. Instead of giving him pause, he told her he was aware of her connection and would help her clear her father's name. No self-respecting general (simp or no simp) would go this far!

Also a major plothole was why he would drop a 17 year old family blood feud with Wei Qinlin if, after opening up a whole investigation into the Jinzhou massacre and finding his family's sworn enemy, Wei Qinlin's family, was still alive and even going to the Northwest to further investigate? Also, what's with all the parental suicides? That was unbelievable too and come on, let the bad guys get away with murder sometimes (as they often do IRL).

Otherwise, 9/10 story. It noticed a lot of similarities between Pursuit of Jade and Kill Me Love Me (e.g., live in husband, the general who was wronged, the stay in a village where the couple develops feelings for each other, the final stand off with the relative to vye for court control (in KMLM it was the crown prince and in POJ it was the emperor and his main ministers/advisors).
