THIS is what a female general should be like! (and her hubby is just as amazing❤️‍?)

Finally gathered the courage to finish the last episode and say goodbye to what was honestly the best part of the past 3 weeks. Where do I even start🥲

Cast: Phenomenal. Give me 30 MORE!! WOW. Our leads were insane in this, in the best way possible. Let's start with our boy ZhangLingHe. I've watched him since his earlier supporting days, and knew his acting was always top tier, but seeing him diversify his roles and honestly just perfect every single one had me struggling to find a favorite of his. Marquis of Wu'An is BY FAR my favorite. He is ridiculously good looking, duh🤷🏻‍♀️, but his charisma both when his identity is unknown and when he reclaims his title is out of this world. The legendary entrance with the feathers on his head🤴🏻 may be the one scene where I actually had to cover my mouth from squealing like a loser. He is every bit reserved, wise, ruthless to those who deserve it, and soft to his loved ones. 10/10. You'd think that's as high as you can get but nope. Our girl Tian Xi Wei was honestly a 50/10. I have never been so impressed by a female lead. Coming from a poor background, she has all the qualities you'd expect-- kindness, respect, loyal❤️‍🩹. It's the qualities that are completely unexpected that blew me away. Her martial arts are truly better than generals who've trained their whole lives, and all the battle scenes where she's the main character were blockbuster-level scenes filmed showcasing the best of cinema👏🏻. I do wish they showed us a bit of her training she briefly mentioned, but I'm just going to assume she is a natural and barely needed it. TXW is known for being very strong despite her fairy-like image🧚🏻‍♀️ and petite frame, but being physically strong as well as mentally really made her a new favorite female character of mine♥️. This masterpiece is my favorite drama from both our leads, and I don't think that'll change for at least a couple years. The supporting cast was also amazing-- the second couple, the wise elders, the adorable little sister, the brotherly clique of hers... it could not have been better. Even the villains were great, though I shamefully admit that I found myself rooting for them at one point 😅 Love them all UGH

Plot: Costume dramas are always a hit or miss for me-- some have too much political talk or war scenes, but this was the perfect balance of keeping the story interesting while having relevant "serious talk" in the background. The first episode had everyone hooked, I'm sure. The cinematography of the first scene❄️ of the two leads early on was aesthetically beautiful, and there was not a moment I was bored. The balance of romance, comedy, friendship/family, revenge was MY FAVORITE! The progression of the plot was done nicely, and though not all of it was surprising, the fact that I'd wait every day for the releases and the torment of having one-episode release days says enough for me. I was hooked from the start, and each and every episode until the end.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, CHEMISTRY: EEEK🤭 another squeal moment just thinking about it. The progression of the romance was another reason for me to use the word PERFECT lol but truly, their chemistry is insane. It starts off just gradual, as seeing a beautiful man and beautiful woman on screen together normally does😂 But then they grow closer and suddenly they're willing to risk their lives for one another. Boom💥 nothing can tear them apart and you realize it's end game for them. Though we see some truly romantic skinship scenes quite later in the drama, I assure you-- IT WAS SO WORTH IT. ZLH is such an expert at guiding his female costars in romantic scenes and TXW reciprocated in a way where I am still questioning whether or not they caught feelings. Or moreso, how could they NOT??? I hope they have more works together 🤞🏻And even the platonic chemistry, between the friends and elders and kids. All so wholesome!

I cried, laughed, got anxious, and felt about every emotion out there. The "what if" scenario at the end was also such a great addition to help those of us suffering after all that happened in that last episode 😭😭😭

Three weeks have passed in a blur... and now it's time to say goodbye. The harder it is to get over, the more attached I realize I became to such a massive work of art. She's beautiful, he's beautiful, everyone was beautiful. Not to sound vain, but being pleasing to the eye and veteran-like acting and a beautifully-written story go hand in hand with creating a true masterpiece. I may need to rewatch this soon. If you are on the fence, WATCH IT! Goodbye, for now... 👋🏻🫶🏻

The acting carry the show

I have not seen many Chinese drama where the acting calibre and standards are so superb all across the board. The cast, especially Chang Yu, are all so outstanding. I think only Fan Zheng's seems a bit bland.

I struggled to follow the second half of the story - and I think I am still a bit lost in the end lol.

Girl boss with balance

To be frank my favorite couple was Fan ChangNing and Yu Bao Er.
Those kids were so cute! and it was a blessing to see them persevere together thought out.

When ChangNing met up with BaoEr when he lost it I cried a little.
She brought peace back into the insanity he was going through.

The pink swear he’d make her a queen when he grows up 🤣😄😊

How he because ruler while mom was the background. Very interesting. 😌

What i found fault with:
They spent a lot of time in Chang Yu, home village. I understand they wanted us to bond with those living there but really?! And most of the time with Yan Song the scholar they kept poking fun at most of the series. (I get it, let’s stop beating the dead horse)

Very annoyed with the fact for the first 10 or so episodes Yan Zheng was injured, you could sense he was strong but we never got to see his true fighting form. Always injured in some capacity or another.

The plot armor provided to Chang Yu was insane. Compared to her lover, this 90 pound wet little women fought like a deity. I know her father was skilled but really?!

Ok they gave her a handicap.
She couldn’t read and she maybe had dyslexia. Then they kept mentioning how beautiful she was. enough already. 😩
Aside from the princess, How the hell in this age could she maintain such a “fair skin” complexion?

To China’s credit, they were the first where I found they wrote heroin very well. No girl bosses. They earn it and they despise “the message”. But! They came close this time. I’m glad they kept “the balance.”

Politics, was hard to grasp in the beginning. Like most folks watching the families dynamics involved, where their relationships stood…. took a while to process. Mostly because they were side stories until it mattered after episode 24.

What I liked.

Cinematography was excellent, the director did amazing work with each scene to bring depth and flesh out this vision what he wanted to express.

Felt the differences between the capital vs other places. Though everywhere was too “clean”.

The use of light and shadows, optics, usage of color palettes was well done.

Writing:

Expected from most c-dramas, and J-dramas respect and “reflection of culture” and superstitions. We don’t see this in kdramas anymore because they purposely make moves with an international audience in mind.

The cast writing and translation was excellent. Writing in general was excellent. They understood the assignment and tried thier best to translate it into a proper script. Some folks say pacing was a problem. Yea a little, like I stated earlier they could have shaved a couple of episodes from the beginning. Frankly the series for me started at episode 23

Couples:

Loved the last episode where Qi Min was falling for Qian Yu but was nauseous being around her.
This relationship was nuts. All he needed to do was let her go. She even told him I should’ve have saved you. My dude was an imposter all along.
Brother loved a “snake in the grass@ and mother knew.

Loved Qi shu and headmaster Yin Gongsun relationship. It’s only when they were in the heat of a war torn situation they were able to express themselves. And that Heimlich maneuver made them partners for life.

I’d give the series an 9.0.

I hate the ML

I had so much hope for this drama with its interesting premise of a butcher's daughter as the FL. In most c-dramas I've watched, the woman is polished and refined. I love that this FL doesn't fit into that mold.

To begin with, I have nothing against the actor himself. I know actors can get typecast. This is the second drama I've watched with Zhang Ling He. Do the directors make him force himself onto women in every role he has? I hated Princess Royal when he tried to sexually assault the FL. I stopped watching Pursuit of Jade after he forcefully kisses the FL. TWICE. Not once. TWICE. If a woman forcefully pushes a man away after he tries to kiss her, a good person wouldn't try to kiss her again. I will not be watching any of his other shows unless I know that his character doesn't behave like an aggressive jerk who doesn't care about getting consent from someone he supposedly loves.

Another reviewer complained that I shouldn't care about the lack of consent since this is a historical drama and women were viewed differently in the past. My response: "Since this is a historical drama, in history, could people leap over buildings and large distances because they knew martial arts? Or keep fighting at peak capacity after being stabbed/getting hit by arrows repeatedly? Having a butcher's daughter who is adept at martial arts & able to catch the heart of a nobleman is also historically inaccurate. Most of us watch these shows because they're fiction and not historical documentaries. If the writers/directors can take liberty with one plot point, they have the choice to take liberty with other plot points. I'm sick of purity culture and the harmful belief that a FL needs to be forced into anything sexual because "good women" don't have sexual desires. There are plenty of shows where consent is respected. A person who truly loves their love interest would ask for consent. They wouldn't disrespect the person they supposedly care about by forcing any form of physical intimacy. That's true regardless of the year we're in--whether it's in the past or present."

after a cdrama slump, this was a nice reintroduction back

I like to think of myself as a veteran cdrama watcher. I have seen the industry change over the past decade and one thing I note is the beauty of the production, especially when it comes to fantasy or historical. I would say recently, I haven’t been as In with sea dramas as I was in the past due to time. In all Honesty I think it was how long each episode usually is and how many episodes there are. But this was beautiful in my opinion. I love the music so I have no comments about that. I think they fit the scenes perfectly. I love the cast. I think each person was meant for their role. I personally like the scenery. I think I was too involved with the story at times to notice the AI and CGI overuse that some of the comments have pointed out. But upon re-watching, I can see where they come from. As for the storyline, I think it was relatively straightforward compared to some of the storyline I’ve watched in the past and because of that I think you really helped me and my impatiencence, Because I saw who wants to get to the nitty-gritty of the story 40 episodes with one hour plus each episode is a lot. And everyone knows in the drama world when it comes to romance usually with long dramas the romance takes a long time to develop and you feel it to take it a long time. But I think with the introduction of the main characters at the set up initially I didn’t even notice it took a couple of episodes to get to things like the first kiss. I have no notes for the chemistry because it was just so good. The two leads built detention well the way the bill lead used his eyes to act was very apt. And the female lead embodied the “free spirit, older sister but still has responsibilities to carry to general” trope very well. in terms of the court intrigue and political storyline it was nothing new and the pacing of it was sometimes erratic but can be overlooked. I personally would always prefer an ending in the post credits at least, Where they show life afterwards like with the kids at the proper marriage. I was also very particularly interested in the younger sister and emperor storyline that can come out of this and I wish that they could develop that little bit at the end. there was some Scenes that really made me cry like when she Went back to Lia’an And saw the fallen villagers welcoming her home. I also think that General wei Was A character was delta really sad hand in life. I would say that there are some actors like Prince Qi Min That really encapsulated what it is to be a complicated character. There were times with his brother where I was confused whether or not he truly loved him or whether he was using him as it means to an end and I think that confusion was purposely done. Even at the end of their relationship, I think the confusion felt is due to the complicated feelings of Qi Min Who is wrestling between his madness his ambition his need for revenge as well as some sort of love that may have crept into his heart over the 10 years. I could say a lot about this drama and I can’t believe I bitched watched it. This is not been the longest drama by any means that I have watched. but it was still on the longer side. which just reads that it was an average Length of a cdrama. All in all, I think it was beautiful and it was a nice way to get out by drama slump. The only reason why I gave it a rewatchability it’s because it is often hard to rewatch shows that They require you to unravel political intrigue once you’ve unravel that you know the storyline. It’s kind of like how it’s hard to rewatch a murder mystery when you already know who the murderer is.

Side note, I have an unpopular opinion. I am personally tired of the trope that the poor but capable female lead who married into a rich and capable household wants to go back to living in obscurity in the village. I understand that we are trying to keep people leads close to their humble backgrounds and try to reiterate that they love the male leads and it wasn’t her money or power, But there could be a sweet spot where they can keep their humble or origins well, also exercising some sort of power and influence. It doesn’t always have to be in the capital because I am understand that the Leads of the run away from the capital due to political strife intrigue. and after the things that they have to go through, I would also want to take some time off in the countryside, But I think they could be a middle ground.

A lot of people like the book and obviously it was popular enough to become a drama so hopefully I’ll go read the book and see how The share compares.

Gorgeous visuals, talented cast, amazing romance… and a C-drama curse of a last third slump.

Pursuit of Jade is basically half romance half adrenaline-fueled ride for a huge chunk of the runtime, and honestly… the drama fully deserves the hype people are throwing at it right now despite some of its flaws most C dramas suffer in the second half.

The production is doing THE MOST (in the best way) in this drama. So let me start here because if you are like me and you care even a little about visuals, this show will feed you. I don’t care what others say about excessive filters and other gimmicks but C-dramas are a guilty pleasure for me and I don’t expect much realism from them when I watch them as long as I can wrap my head around it the ideas.

Cinematography: absolutely gorgeous, super vibrant, and honestly imaginative—especially the winter setting. It’s cinematic in a “wait—pause—this is art” way. The cozy small town scenery in the first third) is everything.

Battle scenes + war scenery are masterfully choreographed and shot. The energy feels real, and the staging/camera work makes it way more immersive than “generic C-drama fighting.”

From the very beginning, the drama sets a really high bar, and it stays there more often than not. And when I say high bar, I don’t mean just the production value. I mean, as far as the romance goes.

Romance occupies first 10 episodes almost entirely, laying a foundation for later. After episode 10 the story begins to expand (and it works… mostly).
We start getting deeper backstory for other important characters and the whole thing starts widening into a bigger picture.

Now, I’m picky about this because I usually watch Asian dramas for romance (and yes, they often do it better than Western shows). Sometimes when romance is super intense at the start and then “becomes a background story,” it loses its spark. That’s why this drama is a bit of a mixed bag for me. It’s heavy on romance at first, and it sets up a mood and an expectation for the rest of the series, then it steers towards other areas and never quite gets back to romance in the same capacity it’s presented to us at the beginning. Romance magic does come very close in the final couple of episodes to the romance at the beginning of the drama.

Overall if you’re watching Pursuit of Jade for romance, you’ll still get what you want here. While it wobbles a little, it remains consistent throughout the 40 episodes. And if you want romance *plus* other historical high stakes stuff, you’ll enjoy it too.

The characters (including villains) feel real. I liked how the cast was fleshed out—not just the main couple. But the pig slaughtering squad, the villagers, the children. The villains aren’t just “villains because plot said so.” They are multifaceted.

Zhang Ling He as Marquis of Wu’an aka Yan Zheng is stunning. Like… he’s gorgeous (and we all know it) and the performance is strong. Doesn’t matter that he stays in bed and is mostly wounded for at least half the drama if not more. I think this actually makes it more realistic. He does have pretty good fighting scenes, but as far as palace setting stretch of episodes, I wish he would have done more scheming of his own. But again, I think it has a lot to do with the source material.

And regarding all the online criticism going around about his makeup: it’s irrelevant and driven by haters. The reason you’ll see people picking at it is probably because Zhang Ling He’s popularity is rising internationally—so of course the haters get louder. People will look for anything to pick on. Also—let’s be real—both Luo Yunxi as Tantai Jin and Chen Zheyuan as Prince Feng Suige in their respective dramas have way heavier makeup. Somehow no one has said anything at the time. So yeah. Ignore the nonsense.

Zhang Ling He’s performance is versatile and he delivers the kind of male lead energy you want in a romantic historical drama. He has been working very hard this past few years. He deserves all the success because I can’t imagine to star in as many successful dramas he has since Love Between Fairy and Devil came out. I’m looking forward to more of his work.

Tian Xi Wei as Fan Chang Yu is also convincingly great. She feels natural in the role and carries the emotional beats well. The “country bumpkin” arc dragged a bit in my opinion. But her change in episode 26 was INTENSE. I actually liked seeing her true colors open up because she looks like a completely different person in that battle scene. That’s one of the most intense battle scenes in the whole drama. The only thing that bothers me here is that the transition wasn’t seamless, but rather immediate. I would have liked to see her transition from a simple country girl to military power house slower, but more organic.

The chemistry? Yeah, it’s one of the best I’ve seen in a while between leads. It’s genuinely top tier—like, not forced. You believe they’re in love on screen.

If I’m being honest, the romance is the reason I stuck so hard and rewatched certain moments.

And I think the production crew matters a lot here too—direction, cinematography, how intimate moments are translated. I’m not the kind of person who replays scenes for fun, but I did rewatch several of theirs because the acting and execution were just that good. Their emotional scenes are very well acted out. You can feel it.

I enjoyed the power dynamic shifts, the dramatic moments between them, and the amount of skinship we got. I feel their story is mostly satisfying—with just a few could’ve been slightly more opportunities for more interesting romance high stakes situations. Specifically towards words the end.

One thing I really didn’t love (my personal pet peeve) is the separation.

This is personal preference, but it bothers me: I’m not a fan of third-act breakups/separations where one person just decides to step back because they “think it’s best,” instead of it being clearly justified, discussed, and agreed in a healthier way.

Without actually asking the other one what they want—Fan Chang Yu suddenly draws that line between herself and Yan Zheng aka Marquis of Wu’an, first because of difference in status, and then other factors. Girl didn’t even ask him. Just made a decision for him while he is simping so hard, it’s difficult to watch. I was like *okay… I’m supposed to take this seriously… right?* Because how come she can be a strong female lead in every way except for *keeping your man in your grabby hands* way? I was expecting that this separation was there for a reason. It made me think that something would come off it later in the drama. But it didn’t really pay off in a way that felt meaningful later.

Eventually they got back together, and it felt like the separation happened mostly because that’s what the plot requires.

Again—this is just my gripe. I’ve watched too many C-dramas so I already know what I’ll like and what will annoy me.

Side story: Yu Qian Qian + Qi Min / Sui Yuan Huai felt dark… but also messy.

I found Qi Min’s character very compelling. But… I don’t think he was written in a super organic way in the script.

He doesn’t feel introduced with a clean flow. It took me a lot of the drama to finally piece together what the relationship between him and Qian Qian even truly was. I didn’t understand what he saw in her until the last episode, and we didn’t get much insight into her mental state either. I also didn’t understand why he didn’t want his son to live. Some motivations felt unclear to me—like the presentation was all over the place. I basically had to piece together his character from the choppy pieces of the story we were given. I think having better written dialogues for them would have clarified some of the things.

That said Deng Kai does really well in the role. I’m pretty sure he’s ML-material, he just needs the right kind of projects.

Another small thing that bothered me were pointless characters that were introduced that eventually get deserted or get endings that feel kind of “that’s it?”

We don’t hear from them again much, and it makes it feel like some setup doesn’t land.

For example: Sui Yuan Qing. There’s a lot of fuss in the beginning implying he’ll matter hugely… but he’s basically dead 2/3 into the drama. A chunk of screen time early on that was given to him and his feud between our lead couple feels wasted. He has such insane chemistry and potential for a great conflict with Fan Chang Yu. But apparently, poor guy was mostly there to be a tool for something else. His ending is pitiful. Similar vibe with Wei Xuan and a few others, including Li Wen Kan. He just kind of got forgotten halfway through the show after he served his purpose. He only shows up at the end to provide military support.

My biggest issue is pacing, mostly the last third slump. This is probably the core reason this didn’t become a perfect experience.

First and second thirds were interesting, romantic, and super satisfying. Romance is strong early, then military action ramps up, and that actually works. But after episode 30, like… very many Chinese dramas do this, and I felt it happen here too: the drama starts losing steam.

I almost wish they had fewer episodes and a tighter last third instead of all those longer dragging scenes for characters who only appear briefly no one cares to know what they think, plotlines that exist mainly so the characters can die for someone.

The ending is still satisfactory and production quality stays high—BUT the ending still feels a little anti-climactic. The big reveal about who Fan Chang Yu’s father is and the consequences and the revenge were glossed over. Her husband it’s supposed to help her figure it out, but he wasn’t even around half the times. there is a lot of wasted potential here with this storyline. And then in the very last episode, we need to go back in time and see what happened. At this point of the drama, viewers don’t care what happened in the past.

So… should you watch it?
Yes. Strongly.

Pursuit of Jade is still a very well-made drama and I genuinely recommend it to people who want:

- adrenaline-fueled battle scenes
- high-stakes energy
- mind-blowing romance
- charming and talented leads
- lots of comedic elements
- gorgeous visuals, including color grading + vibrant cinematography
- a talented cast + intrigue + backstories

Are there a couple of better ones I’ve personally loved more? Sure. But this is absolutely worth checking out, especially if you’re the type who wants romance + action that doesn’t feel boring for most of the runtime.

If you’re on the fence, I’d say give it a shot—because the first stretch has serious momentum, and the production is too good to ignore. In the end, you will still want to stick around to see how it all wraps up. It’s still a really really good historical drama with strong romance, strong acting, and a very high production value.

A C-Drama That Drew Me In From the Start and Wouldn't Let Go....

I just came off of my Love Between Lines binge-watching week and stumbled across Pursuit of Jade. I took one look at the cast and knew this was for me.

Pursuit of Jade follows a determined and intelligent female lead whose life becomes entangled with a powerful yet emotionally guarded male lead as they navigate court intrigue, hidden identities, and a past that refuses to stay buried. What begins as a story of survival slowly unfolds into a layered romance built on trust, sacrifice, and the quiet tension of two people learning to lean on each other in a dangerous world.

Zhang Ling He and Tian Xi Wei are two of my favorites and putting them together was the best move. After falling for Ling He in The Best thing, I thought surely nothing could top his chemistry with Xu Ruo Han, but I was wrong. His chemistry with Xi Wei was absolutely amazing and engaging to watch.

There’s something really soothing about Pursuit of Jade, it’s not trying to overwhelm you with nonstop chaos, but instead pulls you in with its atmosphere, slow-burn storytelling, and emotional undercurrents. It’s the kind of drama that sneaks up on you; one minute you’re just casually watching, and the next you’re fully invested in every glance, every quiet moment, and every almost-confession.

The chemistry is subtle rather than explosive, but that’s exactly what makes it work. It feels earned, and when the emotional payoff hits, it hits in that soft, lingering way that stays with you after the episode ends.

Story — 8/10
The plot leans into familiar historical drama elements—politics, secrets, and layered identities, but executes them in a way that feels polished and easy to follow. It’s not overly complicated, which actually works in its favor, letting the emotional beats land without getting lost in excessive plot twists.

Acting — 8.5/10
The leads carry the drama with a quiet confidence, especially in scenes that rely more on expression than dialogue. Supporting characters also add depth, making the world feel lived-in rather than just a backdrop for the main couple.

Romance — 8/10
This is a true slow-burn romance where the tension builds through shared experiences rather than instant attraction. When the relationship finally softens, it feels natural and satisfying, even if it’s not the most physically expressive love story.
****Small Spoiler****(Let's not forget that you will love the sizzle during the bath-tub scene)

OST — 7.5/10
The soundtrack complements the tone beautifully, leaning into soft, emotional melodies that enhance key moments. While not overly memorable on its own, it blends seamlessly with the story and never feels out of place.

Overall Vibe — 8.5/10
The drama excels in creating a calm, immersive atmosphere that feels both elegant and slightly melancholic. It’s perfect for viewers who enjoy getting lost in a story that prioritizes emotion, character growth, and aesthetic storytelling over fast-paced drama.

Pursuit of Jade is one of those dramas that feels like a quiet escape, it may not be the flashiest or most intense, but it delivers where it matters most. If you love slow-burn romance, thoughtful characters, and a story that unfolds gently but meaningfully, this one is absolutely worth your time.

Now, I'm off to find another c-drama to fill this void in my heart ❤️‍🩹

Start to finish great!

So, I rewatched, on binge, this drama three times while airing. Each time I took a little something more from it! I paused to watch the whole thing until I had the time to deal with the unraveling I knew was coming. And I am so glad I did! This drama deserves nothing less than the stellar rating it is receiving. Beautifully cast, fantastically acted. Love, hate, rich, poor, black and white, right and wrong-and every shade of all things in between. It even paid homage to the book without needing to delve fully into it and losing the story it set out to tell. If I had to nit-pick, I would say that the exquisite world cut scenes could have been cut back to give the story a bit more character time at the end. I also know that the music was not loved by all, but thought it fit well for the emotions it needed to carry. Overall, my final binge, from start to finish, delivered the amazing story and characters I knew I would love. In fact, I many need to watch it again soon!

A memorable drama!

I truly enjoyed this drama! I wasn't hooked at first, but the story and the cast slowly got me totally obsessed for this drama. Zhang Linghe hasn't been my favorite ML until now. I mean WOW! what happened here?? The rough softness and the longing stares for the FL got me dizzy. Amazing acting from both.

The story was interesting and well-spaced, and there wasn't any boring episodes. The villains were particularly delightful and memorable.

Where did those 40 episodes go?!!! Apart from The Untamed, this is the first C-drama I actually found it REALLY hard to stop watching! In fact I only just completed it, after binging in 3 days... my excuse for neglecting everything else?... I wasn't well either and slept on the sofa! 😅

Fabulous story, full of intrigue, lies, palace politics, secrets and cover-ups, and a near perfect pace. It's 100% one of the easiest-to-get-through, of the lengthy dramas, I've watched.

Stunning cast and characters ~ the women in this are all 💯 as are the men.

I was hooked from the start, and loved Fan Chang-yu. Another self-reliant, stubborn, practical, motivated character. Whilst not educated, lacking in etiquette, and very often misunderstanding proverbs (hilariously at times), she is very clever in a practical way, tactical and savvy. She is also sharp tongued when needed, and fabulously outspoken.

Our ML is drop-dead gorgeous, as a character as much as the actor is facially. He's so down to earth, his back-story (like our FL's) is one of tragedy, but again like her, he doesn't play the victim.

Supporting characters are many and varied; some that have developed into absolute ba5tards by their circumstances, with others driven by the usual craving for power and absolute domination... some a bit of both.
The vibrant (but seeming to be eternally in winter) village that a lot of the earlier story is set in, has a wonderful array of characters. There's hardship, gossip, spite, camaraderie, and many laughs, too.

This is another story busting with appropriate (and excellently written) humour, warmth, action, emotions and love of family/friends, as much as romance... which whilst an important part, of course, does not swamp the story.

There are some aspects that might have been a bit better done... mostly around a few storylines that felt incomplete, or 'buried', which I thought could easily have been incorporated/addressed at little to no extra time. However, for me these weren't enough to spoil my viewing.

I seriously loved it, will definitely watch it again, and it's another firm favourite now.

.....juicy BONUS ~ in the latter part of ep38 and early ep39, are 3 linked, seriously smoking scenes, between our leads. Their chemistry throughout was really good, but here it was 🔥. I was almost melting! At one point, he looks at her like she's his about-to-be-devoured favourite food 🫠

I just feel the need to add, that recent articles and comments around how the Marquis character is too good looking, is ridiculous. This is an action romance, not an historically correct story. It's fiction! When does anyone complain that the FLs are too attractive for their role?! Paradoxically, if the Marquis, being the ML, were less than attractive, that would prompt complaints, too, for sure. This is escapism, not real life... surely we all get enough of that!

(After watching Love in the Clouds, and then this, I fear it's going to be hard for my next C-drama to match up!)

TZZH + ZHUYU = PERFECTION!

From casting, visuals, cinematography, OST, production, and world-building—even novel adaptation—it truly lives up to its high-caliber reputation. Chef’s kiss!!

This drama trusted itself to show rather than tell—leaning into nuance, detail, and emotional depth in the most beautiful way. Record-breaking heat indexes across three major platforms, and rightfully so. Kudos ZhuYu team!💗

XiaoTan baobei 🥺💖 thank you for giving life to Fan Changyu so beautifully. You didn’t just play her—you became her. Your portrayal was so natural, emotional, & the way you conveyed every feeling—softness, strength, vulnerability—was simply amazing. So galing as always!!

Zhang’ge… what a performance!!

Marquis of Wu’an? Xie Zheng? Yan Zheng? that was u, thank you for bringing him to life with such depth— you embodied his intelligence, restraint, & the way he loves so deeply. Kudos to you!😖

My obsession for a month

Acting:
My favorite role of 田曦薇 and 張凌赫! I was absolutely addicted to their romance and so cheering XZ on getting the girl. BOTH OF THEIR JEALOUSY AND ANGER AT EACH OTHER WHEN SEPARATING. WHEN HE PROPOSES TO HER AND GETS REJECTED AND THE DEVASTATION ON HIS FACE. The sparring scene when they finally make up (me crying tears of joy). THE BATTLEFIELD SCENE OF HER GETTING PICKED UP. Cinematic masterpieces and absolutely amazing angles and filming.
The side romance of GSY and QS was so sweet and long awaited. The tragedy of YQQ and QM. They all ate it up.
But it does really bothers me how people are really into QM because he's hot. The whole point of his story is the tragedy of obsession with power and control over others. He never truly loved her, he thought he did, and only at the very end does he realize.

Music:
Amazing. On repeat. Give me more. 張碧晨 is such a goddess and her vocals do this drama so much justice.

Story:
I think this was ultimately why I can't rate this drama above a 8.5 even though the acting and music are phenomenal. I think the plot is very strong and well paced for the first half of the show. Once FCY joins the military, everything happens too quickly and without enough depth to really continue driving the story forward as compellingly. I had problems with how she just got away with breaking so many military laws? How she's allowed to command soldiers or lead people with no military knowledge? I love how strong her character is but some things just felt unbelievable.
I also wished we got more fleshed out battles. I didn't ever feel like we were really seeing a large scale war. I think I've been spoiled by Who Rules the World, Legend of the Female General, Fated Hearts, Wonderland of Love with the epic battle scenes.
I think part of the problem is that 33% of the drama was well covered in 20 episodes and they squished the last 66% in the final 20 episodes because of the episode limit. I would've been perfectly fine with the drama being split into 2 seasons to fully do the story justice.

Overall totally recommend! Definitely worth a watch.
